Chapter 3: Distraction

My gaze softened as I looked at the handsome Beta standing in my entryway. Reed Vonn looked like a male model with the body of a professional athlete. His toffee colored hair was kept short on the sides and longer on top. The cut accentuated his boxy jaw and played into every girl's all american boy fantasy.

It wasn't until high school that I found myself attracted to Reed. Before that, we were just best friends that would play pretend-battle and shift to run together in the woods at night after school. My dad and I would go over to their house almost every day of the week so Mrs. Vonn could make us dinner while he and his Beta talked over business. She enjoyed taking care of us after my mom passed away.

Junior year of high school is when Reed and I's relationship matured into something new. A group of girls had been been trying to flirt with him in front of me in the hallway. I felt intensely territorial over him and possesively took his hand in mind. I twirled around to face him, standing on the tips of my toes to plant my lips on his, letting the then speechless girls know he was off limits. He had stood shocked for seconds before I felt his lips spread into a small smile. He gave my hand a light squeeze before bringing his free hand up to sweetly caress my cheek.

My first kiss, my first everything was experienced with Reed. He was the boy everyone had always assumed would be my mate and stand by my side through this war. And he would, but as my Beta or my partner I didn't yet know.

I had never felt the irresistible pull of the mate bond towards Reed, but he did make me feel things that no one else could. He was my best friend, my comfort, and the most logical choice for a submate, which is what we called a life partner that wasn't a fated mate.

Many wolves settled for submates when they realized their intended partners were not in this pack and that there would be no chance of connecting with the other halves of their souls. Their mates were lost souls after all, since that meant they would be a Phantom pack members. Enemies.

I got up from my stool and and strode from the kitchen over to Reed, the image of our first make out session still fresh in my mind.  This is what I needed right now. This was my escape for a few minutes as it had been for the last six months, even though these escapes weren't always with my Beta.

Since I had enough on my plate and needed to keep my relationships casual, there were also two Sigmas I occasionally used for a distraction when I craved one. I was Luna after all and could do as I pleased without question.  I just couldn't handle commitment at this point in my life, even with the mounting pressure to produce an heir within the next few years in order to keep this pack alive after I was inevitably murdered.

Reed cleared his throat as I approached him, his eyes darkening with the possibily of what was to come.

"So the eastern breach-" were the only words he was able to get out before I interrupted.

"It was a glitch and I took care of it." I didn't want to talk business right now. I'd be doing that for that next twelve hours.

"But I really think-" he started before I closed the distance between us, forcefully grabbing the back of his head and bringing his full lips down to mine. He groaned in approval and wrapped his hands around my waist, pulling me closer to his chiseled body. I parted his full lips with my tongue and he hungrily reciprocated the action.  My fingers tangled through the thick top of his hair, tugging at it slightly when he moved his hands from my waist to the bottom of my ass. Effortlessly, he picked me up and I spread my legs around his hips, hooking my heels behind his back.

This is the only time I enjoyed having a small frame. Most of the time l felt like I would be underestimated or that others thought they could try to challenge me due to my petite five-foot-two body, but being on the smaller side made sex with my fuck buddies, who were all over six feet tall, so damn fun.

Our bodies were pressing tightly together as Reed carried me to the white granite kitchen island and sat me down on it, his mouth never leaving mine.  I could feel his erection through his gray jogger pants and circled my hips to feel the curves of it through my athletic leggings.

I pulled back and grabbed the bottom hem of his shirt, yanking it upwards in a hurry.  I needed the nagging pack pressures out of my head and didn't want to wait another second. His hands met mine halfway and he ripped the dark blue tee over his head, tossing it the side and giving me a show.

I drank him in with my eyes.  Even though the muscular expanse of his chest could be seen through shirts, the sight of his bare body had my mouth watering.  I gripped the back of his neck roughly with one hand, shoving his face into mine once again, while my other hand explored down his defined abs and back up to his hard pecks.

A moan escaped my lips as he cupped one of my breasts, giving it a gentle squeeze before finding my nipple through the thin fabric of my tank top and rolling it between his fingers.  The fire between my legs was building and I needed him to touch me there.  I found the bottom of my shirt and quickly pulled it over my head, dislodging my messy bun and feeling my hair slowly unravel down my back.

His head dipped down to my breasts and he started sucking on my nipple before switching to the other side.  His strong arms held my weight as he lowered me backwards onto the counter, trailing kisses over my stomach.  Once his mouth got to the waistband of my leggings, he made quick work of tugging them down over my ass and legs, throwing them on the floor beside us.

Now naked and laying on my back, I placed the heels of my feet on the edge of the counter and opened my knees wide for him.  His gaze flared with heat as he eyed my core.  He licked his lower lip as he brought his eyes back to mine, leaving them locked on me as he slowly leaned down and bowed his head into my wetness.

"Fuck." I cried out as he latched onto me.

My hips bucked upwards and I ground into as he rotated between sucking and lapping hungrily.  I reached down, grabbing his hair with both hands and pressed his face into me harder. Holding his head steady, I circled my hips into him, riding his face as the inferno inside of me continued to grow.  My back arched off the cold granite and my toes curled over the edge of the counter. Reed gave one hard, final suck and I came undone. The fire exploded and every muscle that I had been clenching relaxed in satisfaction.

Peace washed over me and I clung to the calm quiet in my mind.  In this state of bliss, there were no worries, no emails, training sessions or strategies. My troubles had been silenced.

Through the sinful haziness, I could hear my phone chime somewhere on the countertop behind me.  The pressures that I had been hiding from began to creep in and invade my bliss. Within seconds, the state of ease I had been desperate for was gone.

My phone chimed again and I growled. I wasn't ready for reality yet and needed just one more trip down ecstasty lane before I could face the day.

Reed was still placed between my open legs, spreading light kisses down my thighs while revelling in what his tongue could do to me.  His eyes bore into me everything he felt.

Lust and heat were at the forefront of his gaze, but behind that churned something deeper.  Awe and adoration smoldered from beneath the thick curtain of long lashes I had always been jealous of.    I could also see his desperation.  While I needed Reed as a distraction, he took part in these activites because what he needed, was me.  He craved my touch, attention, and approval.

I propped myself up on my elbows and brought myself upright, hopping down off the kitchen ledge. I was ready to hold back my inner demons with a second round.

Reed stood from his crouched position and I shoved him backwards so that he was sitting on one of the stools. With my hands on either side of the blush, velvet-backed chair, I bent forward and ran my tongue from the waistband of his sweatpants to his neck in one slow movement.

Once I reached the hollow of his collar bone, I climbed on top of his lap, spreading my legs on either side of him. He was used to this position. I was always on top since my inner Luna would not allow herself to feel dominated. I moved my mouth to his ear and began sucking the lobe before biting down and giving it a teasing tug.  I could feel Reed's hardness twitch under my naked body and quickly brought my hands down to the band of his joggers, ready to free his erection and mount myslef upon him.

The moment I was about to pull the elastic down, Reed's phone blared loudly. He dropped his head back and let out a string of swear words.

He shifted me on his lap, reaching down to his pocket and pulling out his phone. I caught a glimpse of his screen and saw that it was Joseph.

"Jo. Is this important or can it wait?" Reed said.

I leaned over the counter and grabbed my phone, noting the text notifications were also from my strategist, whose muffeld words I could hear on the other end of the call.  "I'm afraid it can't wait. Are you with the Luna?"

Reed smirked at me and winked. "I am."

"Can you both meet me in my office in ten minutes?" the old man asked.

My Beta looked expectantly at me, waiting for my answer.  I knew he wanted me to tell Joseph "no" so that we could stay here to finish what we started, saving him from having blue balls. But I had a responsibilty to this pack and needed to hear what was so important.

I nodded at Reed and he ran his hand roughly through his hair, frustration marring his perfect features. Yup, blue balls.

I turned the lever of the bathtub all the way to the left and watched as the claw foot tub began to fill with hot water. I added a few drops of my favorite lavender and sandalwood bath oil and inhaled deeply as the steam swirlded the scent around me. I was in desperate need of a soak. My body was covered in sweat and my muscles were sore. I didn't know if that was from the hours of night training or my steamy romp with Ivan, who had just left my house- probably a combination of both. I stepped into the tub, slowly sliding down the back of it and stretching my legs out. I breathed in the relaxing lavender mist and sighed as the tension in my muscles eased. I let my head fall back on the bath pillow on the porcelein edge and centered myself, knowing I needed to commit to a path that would determine my future. I began to make a pros and cons list in my head. First for Reed. "Let's go over the postives" I thought out loud. Th

By five in the afternoon, we were only five miles from our intented camp spot. We had used what information we had from previous scouts and satellite mapping to choose the location. It was located on top of a hill looking down on Phantom territory. There were large boulders around the clearing on the hill that we could hide behind until nightfall. We had only stopped a few times to snack on granola bars and rest our legs. Luckily, we were all in such great physical shape that our journey hadn't taken much of a toll on our bodies. I'd offered more than once to take my pack from Ivan, but he had refused each time and muttered something about it helping him get his pump on. A mile from our site, the hair on the back of my neck stood and I had the sudden feeling we were being watched. I stopped and dropped to a crouch postition. And that smell. What was it? It was vaguely familiar but I didn't know why. Drip. The repetitive sound was penetrating through the fog that emcompassed my mind and bringing me out of what felt like a deep sleep. I tried to crack an eye but my eyelid, which felt like it weighed a thousand pounds for some reason, would not cooperate. I mustered all of my strength and struggled as I tried again, finally able to let only a sliver of dim light through. As soon as the brightness hit my pupil, I instantly regretted it. A throbbing pain exploded in my head and ricocheted around in my skull. What the hell was wrong with me? And where was I? I braced myself and peeked through my lashes in an effort to recognize my surroundings.&n
