The first day of patrolling was calm and there was nothing out of the ordinary. But on the second day, things decided to take a turn and become interesting despite Gwen’s wishes that they did not. She would have preferred if she and the others in her group just got to wander around the forest. Aside from the fact that she was woken up at an ungodly hour and was tired most of the time, she did enjoy walking in the forest for the most part.
When she and her group had been patrolling the area for about an hour. Gwen heard the rusting of some leaves in the distance. She wanted to pass it off as an animal but knew better to be safe than sorry. The soldiers around them were mostly quiet and since they moved slowly, their footsteps were barely heard. Gwen and the people in her group slowed down and listened.
They waited for something to happen and unexpectedly, they saw movement. Gwen’s heart jumped and she bit on her lip to keep herself calm.
It didn’t take long until the entire camp was awake. It was near the time when people began to wake anyway. Her partner, which she just found out was called Montana, and she was taken back to the camp and to the General. Gwen was still too shocked to speak and so she left it to Montana to say everything that needed to be said. “We spotted the guard and decided to split up and approach him from different angles, but as we were approaching them, Chester held me back because she suspected that the guard knew that we were trying to capture him. So we ended up behind the rest of the group and so we were not affected too much by the blast.” Everyone looked at Gwen after he finished but she was not paying attention to any of them and instead had her gaze locked on the forest. Just ten minutes ago, everything was going fine but it all went wrong so quickly. “Chester. Why did you think that?” the General asked.
Gwen had stayed out in the cold until morning. And when it was time for everyone to wake up, she had to try and hide the fact that she was crying for hours on end. Her eyes were swollen and red and her skin was dry. Her only option was to hide out by Doctor Reeves, with some ice packs on her eyes until she was comfortable enough to face everyone. Since she did that, she also experienced a round of comforting words from him and Gloria.Even though she had stayed up for hours, she did not feel tired at all and so after the deswelling of her eyes, she went to breakfast like normal and then integrated with the rest of the soldiers. She still got an unnecessary amount of stares and Gwen just ignored them to the best of her ability. Hoping that they had nothing bad behind those stares. When breakfast was over, it was then time for the morning assembly. It was the first time that she was happy for that. Something familiar to get her mind off of t
Hiding in the trees was smart, not only did it hide them from the enemy, but it also solidified Gwen’s thoughts of the army using their knowledge of their surroundings to make up for the fact that they did not have as many people as Paria-Drae. The soldiers of Estril were not going to seek out the ones on Paria-Drae, it was the other way around. And so, with them looking for a fight, they would have to come into Estril’s domain in order to try and achieve what they wanted. The guards gave them a simple tour of the place. Everything basically looked the same and had the same function. There would be few people per tent and they would watch through the trees. Since it was getting darker, they would rely more on hearing than sight. Gwen was not too bothered by that. If she got to hide up in a cool tent and just listen to the sounds around her, then it was basically the same as relaxing.“Since it is twelve of you guys, you c
Since the river was what the Queen was after, it only made sense that a lot of the soldiers involved were there, protecting it. Gwen had not seen it but she could imagine that it was practically lined with people. To think, the Queen of a country was so embarrassingly money-hungry that she was willing to take over an entire country just to get what she wanted. It would make more sense if it was a government official or a noble, but the ruler of the country. It was surprising how thick her face was. And since Paria-Drae assumes that Estril has such a small army that all their guards must be trying to protect the river, they think that they can just pass the border and basically walk in. It seems like some people actually believed the Queen when she said that the people of Estril were backward. Because no one would be dumb enough to do something like that. For the following few days, Gwen witnessed multiple people from Paria-Drae passing t
‘Why me?’That was the statement that was going through Gwen’s head as she ran through the forest with Ace, the border guards hot on their tails. It always seemed like conflict always ensued where she was. She wondered if it was some sort of punishment for doing something wrong. She had left her parents without saying anything and did sort of get into the country illegally. But it was all for a good cause. So shouldn’t it cancel out?Maybe it was because shared the blood of the Queen and her bad energy was a part of her somehow. But if that were the case then her mother should also be having troubles left and right. The only problem her mother has besides her and the existence of her sister is the fish she has trouble scaling.“Let’s split up so that they have to as well,” Gwen said to Ace.“No, it would be better if we stayed together so that if things get t
Like Ace said, they had eventually come up to some hills. The area was more open, with trees being sparsely scattered over the land. Gwen was actually able to see the sky and stars, which was a greatly appreciated change from running through the forest for the past hour. They had managed to lose the guards at some point but it was still too risky going back, especially because it was dark.To say that her lungs were burning her was an understatement. Never in her life was she required to run for that long and that fast. There were times when she would slow down and let Ace pull her, but for the most part, she ran on her own. The fear of the guards catching up to her was what kept her going. Gwen was also sure that her muscles had probably all been burned off by the lactic acid in her limbs. She and Ace caught their breath on the other side of a hill, making sure to still stay vigilant even when they are trying to stay alive. She would be m
It seemed like the both of them could not sleep. The situation they were in was way too serious to fall asleep through. Gwen would seriously hate herself if she fell asleep. But luckily, she was not tired in the slightest. It surprised her because after running for so long she expected her body to give up and make her fall. But instead of feeling sleepy, she actually felt more alive. Her heart thumped loudly in her chest and Gwen was hyper-aware of her surroundings. Her ears would twitch whenever she heard a sound and goosebumps would break out on her skin.Ace was seated opposite to her. They had not even bothered to make a fire, fearing it would act as a beacon. So instead, the two hugged themselves for warmth. Gwen could barely see him because they were seated in the darkness, his outline was the most visible to her.“Since we are not currently at each other’s throat. Tell me about your oh-so-great life. It seems like you th
Gwen placed her hand on Ace’s back and pushed him forward. “That’s all you soldier boy.”He gave her an incredulous look, “It seems like when it really counts you’re just useless. What about all that talk about beating me in combat.”“That’s when I fell up for it. I’m not up for it. But since you like to act invincible, you can definitely take them on. And about beating you in combat, I’m sure I would have won our not so long ago fight.”“Are you bringing that up to stroke your ego? Who’s now being the peacock here?”“I’ve been around you too much.” Gwen shuddered.“Can the two of you stop talking, flirting, whatever you’re doing.” one of the guards said.Gwen narrowed her eyes at the person who said that. It was the third person to the left, in the
