CHAPTER SIX: DINNER
✧FAITH ZEICAN LEE✧"Yes. Poppy is my sister, Faith." Chloe kept her gaze on me. "She’s incredibly shy. She’s not used to socializing, so we didn’t push her to join us at our engagement party," she explained.
I didn’t respond, just continued to stare at her. It was clear that Poppy was shy when I met her that night—she seemed reluctant to talk to me. I only heard her voice when she mentioned her name, but then she quickly left with her food.
"She’d rather stay cooped up in her room than mingle," Mrs. Herald added with a sigh, turning to Chloe. "Chloe, call Poppy so you can introduce her to your fiancé. She might as well join us for dinner."
Chloe nodded immediately. "Yes, Mom." Then she stood up from her chair and glanced at me to say goodbye before heading out.
I was left in silence with Chloe’s parents. Mrs. Herald continued talking about how shy Poppy had been since childhood, mentioning that she grew up with no playmates because she rarely left the mansion.
A few moments later, we heard footsteps, causing Mrs. Herald to stop her story. I automatically stood up from my seat when I saw Chloe, who was now accompanied by her sister, Poppy.
Poppy was clinging to one of Chloe's arms and almost hiding her face behind her. Even their parents stood up from their seats to face the two. Now, they were standing in the wide doorway of the dining room, with Chloe looking at me while Poppy kept her gaze on the floor."Poppy?" Chloe called softly, causing Poppy to look up at her. "Come here. I want to introduce you to my fiancé." Chloe guided Poppy towards me, and I could see how shy she was. When they stood in front of me, Chloe pointed me out to Poppy. "This is Faith Zeican. He’s the one I’m going to marry."
Poppy turned her gaze towards me, her face clearly showing her shyness. I knew we had already met at the party that night, but I couldn’t help but extend my hand to her.
"Hi, Poppy. Nice to meet—" I stopped short as she took my hand, but not to shake it. Instead, she took it and quickly bowed, touching her forehead to the top of my hand. It was a traditional gesture of respect.
'Am I looking that old to her?'
I saw Chloe trying to stifle a laugh as Poppy straightened up. Chloe laughed at her sister’s gesture, while Poppy remained serious, her eyes now wandering over the dishes on the table. I could see her swallowing hard, clearly tempted by the spread. She looked just as eager to dive into the food as she did at the buffet during the party.
"Would you like something to eat?" I couldn’t help but ask, making her look back at me. She studied me briefly before shifting her gaze to Chloe and then to their parents.
“Join us, Poppy,” Mrs. Herald said. Chloe guided Poppy to the empty seat next to me, so now they were flanking me on either side.
We all sat down, and a maid soon brought Poppy a plate. Despite that, Poppy remained still, staring at the food without making a move. Unable to stand it any longer, I reached for the bowl of rice and brought it closer to her. She glanced at me briefly but didn’t say anything. She moved slowly to serve herself some food. Once she had rice on her plate, she went back to observing the dishes on the table.
“What would you like?” I asked her. She didn’t respond, instead pointing to a seafood dish near Chloe. Chloe took it and handed it to me, which I then passed to Poppy. “Anything else?” I asked again. Instead of returning to my own meal, I focused on her because I sensed she wasn’t comfortable. I couldn’t quite put my finger on why.
When she pointed to the beef broccoli, I handed that to her as well. I asked if there was anything more she wanted, but she shook her head. I didn’t look away from her. I watched as she took her first bite, and her eyes widened in surprise and delight, as if she had never tasted anything like it before. Her eating sped up as if she were in a race to finish, her enthusiasm palpable.
“Babe, your food.” Chloe’s voice pulled my attention away from Poppy as she touched my arm. Instead of focusing on my own meal, my gaze was still fixed on Poppy.
I nodded and turned back to my plate, but I could still see Poppy out of the corner of my eye. She was eating quickly, as if starving.
“How old are you, Poppy?” My question made her stop chewing. I couldn’t help but look back at her. Her mouth was full, and she looked at me with wide eyes, blinking rapidly.
“She’s seventeen, Faith.” Chloe answered for her, since Poppy couldn’t speak with her mouth so stuffed.
Seventeen? She’s still so young.
After we finished eating, the two maids cleared the table, but we stayed seated, chatting. Chloe’s parents took the lead in the conversation, discussing the merger of our companies. As I quietly listened, one of the maids brought out chocolate chip cookies and butterscotch that Mom baked for dessert. Each of us had a plate, including Poppy.
Sitting right next to me, Poppy couldn’t hide her soft gasp when she tasted hers. I glanced at her and couldn’t help but smile. It was as if she was in her own little world. While Mrs. Herald was talking business, Poppy was completely absorbed in her cookies, as if nothing else mattered to her.
When she finished her plate, she looked at the maid who served us with a longing gaze, unsure if she should ask for more.
“Have mine.” Mrs. Herald paused mid-sentence when she saw me pass my plate of cookies and butterscotch to Poppy. Poppy was momentarily stunned, but I quickly turned my attention back to Mrs. Herald. “Yes, Mrs. Herald, continue,” I urged, encouraging her to resume discussing the merger.

At around 8:30 PM, I said my goodbyes to Chloe and her parents. They escorted me outside to where my car was parked.
“Visit us again sometime, okay?” Mrs. Herald said with a warm smile as I stood next to my car.
“Sure,” I replied with a smile of my own, then turned to Chloe and Poppy. Poppy was once again holding onto Chloe’s arm.
“Drive safely, Faith,” Chloe said. I shifted my gaze to her and nodded.
Once I was inside the car, I rolled down the window and glanced at them, then at Poppy. “Bye, Poppy.” I waved and smiled, but her response was a shy bow, clearly still feeling a bit bashful.
CHAPTER SIXTY-FOURA week later.✧FAITH ZEICAN LEE✧AS we pulled up to the grand gates of the Herald mansion, I couldn't help but feel a mix of awe and nervousness. The sprawling estate was more magnificent now with its manicured gardens and imposing architecture.Today is the day Poppy and I return here together. However, some of our belongings are still left at the house since they couldn’t all fit in the car. We’ll just have them transported later. For now, Poppy and I each brought one suitcase with just the essential items.Poppy’s father, Mr. Herald, drove us up the winding driveway, a warm smile on his face. Poppy and I were seated in the back, holding hands ever since we left the house to head back to her family mansion. I decided to leave my car at the house for now, as per Poppy's suggestion earlier, so we could just ride with her dad and not have to take separate vehicles.“Welcome home, Poppy,” Mr. Herald said cheerfully as he parked the car in the driveway, his voice brimm
✧FAITH ZEICAN LEE✧I reclined on the couch, attempting to shake off the tightening knots in my stomach. My entire family was gathered in the living room, including Poppy. We all sat on the couch, anxiously awaiting news about the fake Lucio and the deception that had ensnared so many.A month had passed since the Samonte family was apprehended. The hearings had commenced, but today marked the first time the media would reveal the details of the case. Mr. Herald had been preoccupied with further investigations into the mansion and the company, uncovering a web of corruption tied to the imposter Lucio. The charges against them would multiply, thanks to slush funds that had come to light. Our faces were etched with tension as the broadcast began. The atmosphere was thick with unvoiced anxieties, each of us bracing for the next revelation. The news anchor’s voice sliced through the stillness, sharp and resolute. “Breaking news tonight as we delve into the truth behind the identity of the
✧FAITH ZEICAN LEE✧We took Poppy home after the doctor gave us the all-clear. Aside from bruises on her skin—which, as we learned, were caused by the impostor, Lucio—she didn’t suffer any other injuries. Thank God.The doctor did warn us, though, that the bruises would deepen before they heal, so he advised us to do ice therapy on those areas and apply aloe vera regularly. The real Mr. Herald couldn’t join us just yet, even though he wanted to, since he has a lot to attend to right now. Among his priorities are the Samonte case and the company conflicts that arose once the truth about the impostor, Lucio, was revealed. He plans to go back to the mansion to straighten things out there before bringing Poppy back.He promised Poppy he’d visit her at home whenever he had free time, not only to spend quality time with her, but also to get to know Mom, Dad, and me better as her in-laws.“Poppy, I’m so sorry.” Summer was in tears as she hugged Poppy tightly as soon as we stepped into the hou
✧FAITH ZEICAN LEE✧We dashed to the hospital, my mind spiraling through every possible scenario. The police officer hadn’t given Dad any details about what happened to Poppy, leaving me drowning in worry. The drive felt interminable, each minute dragging as we anxiously awaited news. When we finally arrived, we were met by a police officer in the hospital lobby."Here for Poppy Lee?" the officer asked us, his tone calm and reassuring. Mom responded with a nod. "She’s in the emergency room now. She’s been stabilized and is resting."I released a shaky breath, my heart still racing as we followed the officer to the ER. Beside me were Dad, Mom, Hope, Love, and Summer. As we approached, I saw Poppy lying on a bed, looking fragile and pale, surrounded by medical equipment that beeped and hummed softly. Despite the medical equipment, she looked peaceful, her chest rising and falling with each breath. But that wasn't all I noticed. Red marks were scattered across her arms. I stood frozen, ro
CHAPTER SIXTY: ARRESTED꧁ POPPY ꧂Those footsteps had always widened my smile as a child, a clear signal that he was home from work.I kept my gaze fixed on the door, waiting to see who the officer had summoned outside. After a few seconds, I gasped when I caught sight of a familiar figure. However, his face remained obscured by the officers surrounding him.The police stepped aside to let him through. As soon as he was unobstructed, my eyes widened even more, and my mouth fell open in shock. I heard Chloe inhale sharply when she saw him too; they shared the same face as Daddy. The moment he laid eyes on me sitting helplessly on the floor, he dashed over, dropped to his knees in front of me, and embraced me tightly, tears streaming down his face.“Poppy. My daughter…” he cried, his voice breaking.I was frozen, confused, and unable to react. I couldn't articulate what I felt as he repeatedly ran his fingers through my hair. Why did he call me his daughter? And why did he look so much
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE: FOOTSTEPS꧁ POPPY ꧂Chloe had me sit on the sofa, and she took a seat beside me. Daddy stood across from us, flipping open the brown envelope he had brought along. Inside, I saw him pull out a stack of papers. My hands started trembling from nerves, and it felt like my throat was closing up. Was this it? The day I’d dreaded for so long? Would they take everything from me and then... what? Were they planning to kill me?Lord, please help me.I kept whispering a prayer in my mind, just like Faith once taught me when we were falling asleep side by side. His words echoed in my thoughts: “Whenever you’re scared, whenever you’re anxious or unsettled… just pray.”With my eyes closed and hands clasped tightly, I prayed silently, only to be interrupted by Daddy’s voice. “Poppy.”I quickly opened my eyes. “Y-Yes?” The documents he’d taken out of the envelope were now laid out in front of me.“Since you don’t know how to sign, I’ll need your thumbprint.” He pushed a stamp pad
