The last thing Valerie recalled was the knife searing through her skin as she drifted into a dark place, devoid of light. She lost consciousness as the pain overwhelmed her. The ambulance came to a stop, and the paramedics wheeled her out. Valerie’s face was a painful sight, raw and blistered from the hot oil burns, while blood seeped through the bandages on her side from the stab wound.
As they approached the ER, Juan, disguised as a nurse intercepted them with two others. “We’ll take it from here,” Juan said, taking control of the stretcher. Almost immediately, the hospital’s fire alarm went off, creating the perfect distraction for Juan to sneak Valerie out through the exit door.
Without hesitation, Juan and his aides carefully wheeled Valerie into the van waiting for them in the basement. “Drive. Now.” He ordered and swiftly, the van screeched out of the premises and onto the highway.
An hour of endless driving finally came to a stop in front of another hospital and just like they had done before, Juan and his men wheeled Valerie into the building. “I have everything ready.” Said the doctor as soon as they came into sight.
“Hurry! She doesn’t have so much time left.” Juan urged, his voice dripping with urgency.
The medical team jumped into action inside the ER, exchanging quick, focused glances. There was a lot of work to be done and while some tended to the burns, others worked to stitch her up. Tension was on the high side, but every movement held a purpose, as they fought to keep her alive, knowing that every moment mattered.
Ten days had passed since the incident, and the entire city buzzed with news of Valerie’s death. The police had tried to remain quiet about it but due to Valerie’s prominence, news stations were quick to broadcast it. Of everyone who heard it, Carlos was the most excited about the news of her death.
“Finally, everything is mine now. I should thank whoever thought to finish her off,” he muttered to himself, a triumphant smile growing on his lips as he sipped from the wine glass in his hand, savoring the moment. If not for his gambling addiction and the many loans he owned, that almost had his business in ruins, he wouldn’t have thought to frame her for such a horrible crime. Her empire and everything that she had built was now his to control.
Valerie felt numb as she watched the news. If at all she felt any emotion, it was anger, hate, and a growing desire for revenge. This was exactly what she wanted. Her death was the perfect disguise to get back at Carlos for what he had done to her.
“Just like you wanted, everyone believes that you’re dead. I’m sure Carlos is the most excited.” Juan’s voice filled the room as he walked in.
“As it should be,” Valerie replied, picking up the remote on the table and switching off the television. “Let him enjoy his moment of happiness. By the time I am through with him, he will know nothing but pain and regret. I will make sure to leave him grappling onto life with and watch him lose it in the blink of an eye.” her voice hardened, teeth gritted, as her eyes blazed with a fury that held the promise of vengeance.
“It’s crazy what risk people are willing to take when they are in debt.” Juan blurted out. Valerie squinted a brow, showing her confusion.
“I was referring to the doctor I had to bribe to forge your death certificate.” He clarified as she listened intently.
“We almost would not have been able to pull this off if he didn’t have a loophole. He is addicted to gambling and owes a lot in loans. I promised to help him with that and in return, he willingly provided the body of an unclaimed deceased woman who was a perfect match.”
Valerie’s eyes narrowed as she absorbed his words. “I see,” she said, her voice low and laced with a hint of skepticism. “I hope this doctor doesn’t pose a problem to us later.”
“No worries,” Juan reassured her, his voice confident. “He won’t be able to prove anything. I had the body cremated and the ashes disposed of after I claimed it at the station.”
Valeire’s gaze softened as she nodded gently in approval.
“Well, how do you like your new face?” Juan questioned, smiling at her. “The doctor did a great job, didn’t he?”
Valerie looked at her reflection in the mirror on the wall, her fingers gently tracing over her new features. She did not recognize the stranger who stared back. Her old face, her old life, was all gone now, replaced by someone new and better. Valerie had been reborn. Not just by looks that were strikingly beautiful, but even her soul had shifted. It hungered only for vengeance and she would be sure to get it.
“I can hardly believe that the person in my reflection is me,” she muttered, turning to face Juan.
“Well, it would take some getting used to it, but I’m sure you’ll adjust just fine,” Juan said, trying to sound assuring. “Your father made sure that when he built this hospital, he hired nothing but the best doctors in the city.”
Valerie nodded, though her eyes were distant. “When will I be discharged? This place is starting to suffocate me.”
“In a few days,” Juan replied. “They need to conduct a few more tests before you can leave.”
“And the inmates? How are they?” Valerie asked, concern laced in her voice.
“They are safe. You have nothing to worry about.” Juan assured her.
A brief silence followed, then he added “Although, I do wonder why you decided to come up with such a dangerous plan. You could have died, you know?”
Valerie’s gaze hardened, but she did not respond immediately. “There was no way I’d spend my entire life rotting away in prison while the real culprit roamed free.” her voice was cold and bitter. “It was one way or the other. I had to do something.”
Juan sighed, staring pitifully at her. She looked away, disgusted by the look in his eyes. She needed nobody’s pity. She chose this and it was worth every pain she had to endure. The only difference was that now, she was the one to inflict even worse pain on the man who dared to play her for a fool, Carlos.
“Have you thought of a name to use as your new alias?”
“IVY WATERS.” She replied with a hint of determination in her voice.
THREE YEARS LATER
“Hi, I’m Ivy Waters. I applied for the role of an Executive Assistant and was scheduled for an interview today.” Ivy said to the receptionist.
“Okay, one moment please.” The pretty receptionist lady replied with a warm smile, turning to her computer to confirm Ivy’s appointment.
After a brief moment, the receptionist looked up and said “You can go in, Miss Waters. Second floor, first door on your left.”
“Thank you,” Ivy said, returning the smile as she clutched her file and handbag. She headed towards the elevator, determined and focused for her goal.
“This is it, Valerie. You are one interview away from setting your plans in motion. You must win this.” she said to herself as the elevator door closed.
Valerie was back and out for revenge. R Holdings was a big fish she had to catch. Once she can secure herself a spot in the company, everything else will fall into place.
“Of all the applicants that we’ve interviewed for this role, you stand out, Miss Waters.” the middle-aged woman said, smiling from across the table, with two other men beside her, nodding in agreement. “Thank you so much.” Ivy smiled humbly.“I’m impressed that you are vast in several languages.” The woman continued. “Only a handful of young people can boast of such a skillset. And you mentioned that some of these languages were self-taught?” She asked in awe.“Yes, ma’am,” Ivy confirmed.“Well then, I believe we all can agree that she is the best fit for the role?” The woman asked, gesturing to her colleagues for confirmation.“Yes”“Definitely.” They chorused.“Miss Ivy Waters,” she paused briefly, with a smile on her lips. “Welcome to R Holdings.” She extended her hand to Ivy for a handshake. The smile on Ivy’s face widened as she thanked them continuously, shaking their hands one after the other. “Thank you so much for the opportunity. You won’t regret this.” “We hope so.” The w
Chapter 7.A sigh of relief escaped Ivy’s lips as she walked into the bakery that stood right across the street from her office. The smell of freshly baked goods always had a weird calming effect on her, one of the reasons why she thought she would become a baker if she failed to pass the bar exams or even afford an education at all. “Lucky you.” She muttered, taking in the happy smile on the face of the sales attendant. For a moment, she wondered what her life would be like if she had just chosen this life. The life of a baker; a simple one. She most definitely would never have crossed paths with Carlos, that’s for sure. Still, the past cannot be undone which is why she had decided to take her future and that of Carlos in her hands. The lively chatter of customers and sales attendants came to life again in her ears as she pulled herself out of her thoughts and approached the counter.“What would you have today, miss.” the beautiful Black American lady asked, smiling at her. “Two
“So, what now?” Juan asked, going to sit beside her. “You've succeeded in penetrating the company. What's the next line of action from here?” Juan asked, staring directly at her but Ivy did not respond. She was lost in thought. The image of the strange man whose life she had technically saved hours ago flooded her mind but there was no explanation as to why she was concerned about him or even thinking of him. “I hope he’s okay,” she muttered, absentmindedly.“You hope who is okay?” A frown formed on Juan’s face as he questioned her. He couldn’t think of anyone Ivy should be concerned about. As far as he was concerned, she was affiliated with no other person but him. So, it was a quiz in his mind.“Huh?” She recalled her senses, realizing that she had voiced her thoughts out loud. She adjusted in her seat and reached for the half empty glass of water. She takes a sip, avoiding contact with Juan’s curious eyes.“You just said, ‘I hope he’s alright’” He pressed. “Who are you talking abou
“That's it, I'm calling the doctor.” Tim declared, throwing his hands in the air as he headed for the exit. “It's obvious that the allergy episode went as far as knocking your brains out this time.” He muttered as he walked.“C’mon Tim.” Dylan intercepted him. “You should have seen her. I'm sure you'd agree with me that she is the most beautiful person you'd ever see.” Dylan's excitement lingered and so did Tim's irritation.“You must know that I have never been this enchanted by a woman ever since you know who.” Dylan rolled his eyes for a brief moment, expressing the disgust that accompanied the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Naya.Tim paused for a moment, his gaze locked onto Dylan's. He could see the seriousness and assertiveness in Dylan's eyes. And truth be told, it has been a long time since Dylan ever brought up the name of a woman, much less been interested in one. Whoever this mystery lady was, she must be special to have made his friend and business partner go loco.Willing t
Ivy allowed herself into the shop, her features lighting up with a smile as she inhaled the fragrant aroma that filled the air. Her stomach growled and she chuckled. She believed that was only a signal to finish what she had started by going there. As she walked to the counter to place her order, she noticed that there were very few people in the shop, unlike the last time she had been there and the soft orchestra music that played in the background was perfect, setting the right mood- a cheerful and soothing ambiance, perfect for her morning.“Good morning.” she greeted with a sing-songy voice. Her attendant just so happened to be the same black lady from yesterday. Now that Ivy saw her up close, the attendant seemed to be very young, probably in her early twenties. “Good morning ma’am.” the lady replied, absentmindedly. “Oh my God!” she suddenly gasped as soon as their eyes met, startling Ivy.A frown formed quickly on Ivy’s forehead as she observed the attendant. The attendant wa
Days passed and Valerie was still struck by her meeting with Jane. She had contemplated contacting her several times, following Juan's suggestion to find out what really had happened all those years but she fought against the urge.Maybe she would reach out to her eventually, but now was not the right time to do any of that. She picked up the files Juan had delivered to her early that day to have a look. She hasn't been feeling much of herself lately and that was not good enough. The document had every single detail about Carlos and his dealings outside of the office. Just as she had predicted, Carlos was yet to give up his gambling habit and for her, that was a good thing. A smile lined her lips as she studied the papers, pleased with Juan's work. Then, she saw it, the one way she could work her way into Carlos' life for the most of her plan. ELITE NIGHTCLUB. Carlos was a regular at this particular nightclub. And according to Juan's report, he never missed a weekend there. Today co
Carlos' weight weighed heavily on Ivy as they staggered out of the club. “Is someone coming to get you?” Ivy asked as she struggled to keep him from falling to the ground. “No.” He managed to respond and proceeded to speak inaudible words that made her cringe, she merely held herself from punching a hole in his face- that would not only get him to shut up but it would knock him out for sure and that would be worse because an unconscious Carlos would be way harder to move.“Your car keys,” she said, letting him sit on the ground, resting his back on the fire hydrant while she caught her breath. “where is it?” She pushed her hair away from her face, both arms resting on her waist.Carlos was too stoned to give her a direct response and this irritated her greatly. Her fingers folded into a fist as she took in deep breaths, glaring down at him with furious eyes.“If you knew you couldn't handle it, you should have stopped drinking when you were down to your first bottle.” she muttered, h
Seeing Carlos sleep peacefully in the back seat of her car pissed Ivy off immensely. “A bastard like you does not deserve such luxury.” She muttered, her voice laced with contempt. Her gaze shifted to the bottle of water in the cup holder compartment of her car and for a moment, she contemplated drowning him with it but on second thought, that would do nothing but ruin the seat of her car.Ivy nudged him gently and once he was half awake, she pulled him up and helped him into the house. Carlos fell to the couch, muttering inaudible words as he took off his shirt and shoes before falling unconscious again- this wasn't a new sight to her. In the few years they had been married, she had always had to clean up after him whenever he returned from his galavanting, reeking of alcohol. This time, she wasn't that same old Valerie who wouldn't mind such a chore. It also was no surprise to her that Carlos took the effort to change the decor of the house. From the couch to the paint, even the
