Skylar

The sharp chime of the doorbell startled me awake. I groggily sat up, rubbing my eyes as I glanced at the clock. It was still early. Who could it be at this hour?

Dragging myself out of bed, I shuffled to the door and opened it. A delivery man stood there, holding a neatly wrapped package.

“Delivery for Skylar McLair?”

“That’s me,” I said, still half-asleep.

He handed me the package, nodded, and left without another word. I closed the door behind me and stared at the box in my hands. There was a small card attached to it, signed with a single name—Cole.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the package.

Taking a deep breath, I set the box down on the table and carefully peeled back the wrapping.

Inside was an ivory-colored dress, neatly folded. The fabric felt smooth, beautiful and expensive beneath my fingers.

But why had he sent me such a beautiful dress?

Before I could think further, my phone suddenly rang.

I picked it up hesitantly.

“You’re awake,” Cole’s dee

Cole The car ride back was silent. After signing the marriage agreement, I planned to take Skylar home, but a work call forced me to leave. I dropped her at a café for breakfast before heading to the office. Hours later, when I was finally free, I grabbed my keys to pick her up—only to find her phone unreachable. Frowning, I drove to her house, but nothing could have prepared me for the sight ahead. Thick, black smoke curled into the sky, rising ominously from the direction of her house. A chill ran down my spine. My grip tightened around the steering wheel as dread clawed at my stomach. Slamming my foot on the accelerator, I rushed toward the scene. As I got closer, the acrid stench of burning wood and fabric filled my nostrils. The smoke grew denser, seeping into the car, stinging my eyes. I barely registered the burning sensation as I focused on the fire ahead. Skylar’s house was engulfed in flames. Fire trucks and police cars crowded the street. Onlookers stood in cluster

Skylar When I woke up the next morning, the room felt too big, too empty. The soft mattress beneath me, the luxurious silk sheets—it all felt foreign. I turned my head slightly, taking in the elegant but unfamiliar room. Then, reality hit me. This was Cole’s house. My home… The memory of the flames and smoke filled my mind, and I felt a dull ache in my chest. Everything I had known was gone in a single night. I took a deep breath, not wanting to get emotional this early morning. The weight in my chest grew heavier as I recalled everything that had happened. I had told my mother about my marriage, thinking, hoping, that she would understand. That she would see my choice for what it was—a way to help our family. I had expected shock, maybe even reluctance, but not the sheer fury in her voice when she lashed out at me. "Did I raise you to be like this?" she had shouted, her face pale with disbelief. "Selling yourself for money and power? Betraying Ethan like this?" The hurt had s

Cole I hadn't expected my remark to provoke such a strong reaction from Skylar. She misunderstood me, but I didn't bother to explain. I never ate breakfast at home—it simply wasn't a habit of mine. But I let her believe whatever she wanted. At least she had the energy to be upset, to argue, to vent her frustration. It meant she was recovering from yesterday’s events, regaining the fire I saw in her when she yelled at me. That was a good sign. I watched her glare at me, her lips pressed together in defiance, and for some reason, I found it amusing. I felt an unexpected tug at the corner of my mouth—a smile forming before I even realized it. How odd. But as my car approached the company building, the amusement faded, replaced by the cold, detached expression I usually wore. There was no room for warmth in the world I had to navigate. I had work to do. Xavier stood by the company door, already waiting for me. Immediately I got to him, I asked in a serious tone. “Are you ready?” “Y

Cole I walked into the bar, and the scent of liquor and smoke filled the air. As I headed inside, I spotted my friends immediately—Adrian and Fred, sitting in a booth, drinks already in hand. The moment they saw me, Adrian let out a sharp whistle. “Well, well, if it isn’t the man of the hour.” Fred grinned, raising his glass. “To Cole Buckman. The new heir. The man who took an empire with nothing but his iron will.” I slid into the booth, chuckling as they gestured for me to sit. Adrian pushed a drink toward me. “You did it, man. And you didn’t just take over—you crushed every single one of them.” Fred leaned forward, eyes gleaming with amusement. “The board didn’t stand a chance. Hell, even your father couldn’t stop you.” I swirled the whiskey in my glass, letting their words settle. They weren’t wrong though. I hadn’t just successfully taken over the company—I had seized it with an iron grip. I took a slow sip of my drink, the burn of alcohol sharp against

Skylar I stayed in bed longer than usual, pretending I needed more sleep. But in reality, I was just avoiding Cole. After what happened last night, facing him felt impossible. My heart still raced when I thought about it—the weight of his body, the heat of his breath so close to mine, the way his lips had barely brushed against the corner of my mouth. Just thinking about it made my face burn. I groaned and pulled the blanket over my head. Maybe if I stayed here longer, he would have gone to work and I wouldn’t have to see him. I waited for a long time, before I finally got up and freshened myself before heading downstairs, telling myself that he must have left for work by now. I came to an abrupt stop at the bottom of the stairs. My eyes widened, and a soft gasp escaped before I could stop it. He was seated by the counter, casually scrolling through his tablet as if he had all the time in the world. Completely at ease. To my horror, Cole was still in the house. He wasn’t at

Skylar “Finally! I was starting to think you had disappeared off the face of the earth,” Amber, my best friend, exclaimed the moment she saw me and pulled me into a tight hug. “Amber! I've missed you so much,” I exclaimed, excited to see her after a long time since she travelled. “I've missed you more, Sky. Although, I don't know why you hadn't had time for us to see ever since I got back,” Amber complained with a pout. I smiled apologetically. “I’ve been… busy.” We found a table and sat down, and the moment they did, Amber gave me a curious look. “Busy with what? Do you still work at that restaurant?” She asked and then narrowed her eyes at me suspiciously. “I hope that scumbag hasn’t been bothering you anymore?" I knew exactly who she meant. Ethan. I shook my head. "No, Amber. Ethan hasn't been pestering me. It’s strange, actually. It’s like he disappeared overnight." Amber’s eyes widened. "Disappeared? To where? That’s not like him at all. Skylar As expected, Amber nearly choked on her drink. “Wait, what?” I winced at her reaction, already anticipating the flood of questions. She appeared frozen, just gawking at me, probably waiting for me to laugh and tell her I was kidding. When she didn't get the reaction she was expecting from me, she exclaimed louder. “You—Skylar, you got married?! Are you kidding me right now? And you didn’t tell me?” Amber’s voice was sharp with disbelief as she gaped at me, her eyes wide with shock. She looked like I had just told her I was moving to another planet. “When did this happen? Is that why you suddenly grew distant? who did you get married to?” I swallowed, feeling my throat go dry. My fingers instinctively played with the hem of my sleeve as I hesitated. Glancing around to make sure there weren’t too many people around—because I knew how dramatic and loud Amber could be—I finally said, “Cole Buckman.” The moment the name left my lips, Amber’s jaw dropped. Skylar "I can't believe you’re wasting your beauty like this, Sky! You have such a great figure, yet you insist on dressing like you’re some boring secretary in a dull office drama,” Amber rolled her eyes as she pushed me toward a high-end clothing store. She had been nagging me for nearly twenty minutes after we met at the Cafe. Ever since she found out I was married to Cole, she had been criticizing my lack of effort in dressing up as a ‘billionaire’s wife'. I let out a tired sigh, already knowing this conversation was going nowhere. "Amber, I really don’t see the big deal. They’re just clothes." Amber gasped, placing a hand over her chest like I had just uttered something blasphemous. "Just clothes? Sky, that’s an insult to someone like me! Fashion is an art, a language. It tells the world who you are before you even open your mouth. And right now, you’re practically telling people you don’t exist!" She flipped her hair dramatically and gestured to herself. EthanI tapped my fingers against the table, lost in my thoughts. It had been almost a month now since Skylar had started working at Elegance Company.A full month. When I first heard that she had been hired here, I could barely contain my excitement. I remembered the feeling vividly — that rush of satisfaction knowing that finally, finally, I had her where I wanted. In my territory. Under my thumb. Just as I wanted. She hadn’t even realized it then — how naive she had been to think she could step into my world and not pay the price. From the moment she arrived, I made it my personal mission to make every single day difficult for her.It wasn’t long before her colleagues caught on.They were smart enough to sense where the wind was blowing. They adjusted quickly, treating Skylar with the same cold indifference I showed her. Some even went out of their way to be cruel, hoping to score favor points. My plan had been working beautifully. And the best part?I could see it written

Skylar It didn’t take long after the presentation for everyone to notice. It was becoming clearer with each passing day that Ethan, the new managing director, had something against me.At first, it started with the little remarks during my design presentation, lingering glances that felt more like warnings than observations. But after a few days, he wasn’t even hiding it anymore. If there was a mistake to be pointed out, he always managed to find it in my work—even if it was barely there. If there was praise to be handed out, it somehow skipped right over me, even when I knew I had earned it.And my colleagues? They caught on quickly. No one wanted to be associated with someone the new boss didn’t like.I noticed the shift almost immediately. People who used to smile politely now avoided my eyes. Conversations at the coffee station stopped the second I walked past. Even Lilian, who had been so warm and kind to me on my first day, turned cold. Her greetings became forced, her smiles

SkylarIt had been a few days since Tara revealed the truth about why my designs had been consistently rejected. A part of me felt betrayed, another part exhausted. I sat by the garden bench outside the studio, letting my eyes roam the space. The flowers had bloomed so beautifully this season—bright yellows, and soft lilacs that swayed gently with the breeze—but I couldn’t even enjoy the view. My heart felt too heavy.I kept asking myself the same questions over and over. What should I do now? Should I report Ethan? But to who? He was the general manager and part of the Buckman family. He wasn’t just anybody I could challenge. He had power, influence, and a reputation so pristine, no one would believe me.I sighed. The next few moments passed quietly until I heard a voice behind me.“That’s the third time you’ve sighed in the past five minutes.”Startled, I twisted around. I didn’t hear footsteps. When did he get here?Cole. He walked forward slowly and took a seat beside me on th

SkylarI walked into the office the next morning expecting more files and maybe even punishment. After what happened with Tara the night before, I was sure she’d hold a grudge. But to my surprise, something completely unexpected happened—Tara handed me my first official design task! For a moment, I just stared at her, unsure if I’d heard her correctly.“You’ll be in charge of this one,” she said, placing a file in my hands.I blinked. “Me?”“Yes, you,” she replied with a small smile before walking away.My hands tightened around the file. I couldn’t believe it. After all the days of doing chores and running around, this… this was what I’d been waiting for. My very first design! It felt like a door had finally opened, and for once, I could breathe a sigh of content and relief. My heart swelled with hope. Maybe I’d misunderstood Tara all along. Maybe I was just being tested, and now, I’d finally earned their trust.I threw myself into the design with everything I had. I made sure I pu

Skylar I had never felt this uneasy going to work — not even on my very first job. Since resuming at Elegance Jewelry, I’d been on edge, watching every move Ethan made, bracing myself for whatever game he might play now that he was my boss. But strangely enough, he didn’t seem to notice me at all. After that first morning when he was introduced as the General Manager, Ethan hadn’t so much as glanced in my direction. No calls. No confrontations. Not even a nod. At first, the silence was even more nerve-racking than an argument would have been. I kept waiting for the storm. But when days passed and he still hadn’t acknowledged my existence, I began to think maybe I was wrong. Maybe he wasn’t going to make things difficult for me after all. Maybe he had decided to forget about the past and just move ahead…right? With that thought slowly settling in, I began to relax a little. I poured my energy into completing the tasks my supervisor, Tara, gave me. It was easier to stay focuse

When I asked about her first day at Elegance Jewelry, she hesitated for a while and I could tell she was holding something back. Her eyes met mine as she initially threw me a suspicious gaze before she finally looked away, then gave a small smile and said everything went well. But I didn't press her. Skylar I pushed the door open with a bit more force than I meant to, feeling the weight of the day on my shoulders. My shoes scraped along the floor as I walked in, too worn out to even care about taking them off. I was in a mood. A very bad one. And I didn’t need anyone asking about it. Ingrid must have been in the kitchen when I arrived because I could hear her humming softly, her usual cheerful tune. But as soon as she saw me, she stopped. "Skylar, is everything okay?" she asked, noticing the sour expression on my face. I didn’t answer at first, as I made my way to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I wasn't even in the mood to talk to anyone, but I couldn’t just ignore Ingrid. Not when she was looking at me with that concerned expression. “Nothing. I'm fine,” I mumbled in a low voice. I saw Ingrid hesitate for a second, her eyes narrowing slightly as she weighed whether to push for an answer. But then she sighed, understanding that this wasn’t something I’d want to discuss

The day was finally here. I stood in front of the company gate, staring up at the tall building of Elegance Jewelry. My heart was beating faster than usual. It was my first day at work. I took a deep breath and touched the side of my dress gently, the same one Cole had prepared for me this morning. I remembered the cream-colored parcel I found on my bed earlier that morning, and the small note he left tucked inside. “Good luck on your first day at work. – Cole.” And a small smile played on my lips. That simple note, and the thought he put into choosing the dress, gave me more courage than I thought I needed. Somehow, just knowing he remembered this day made the nerves in my chest settle a little. I straightened my shoulders and walked forward, determined to do well. When I walked inside and told the receptionist who I was, I was directed to the third floor. When the elevator stopped at the floor, the doors slid open, and it seemed the world around me changed. EthanThe soft glow of the restaurant lights wasn’t enough to warm the cold twist building in my stomach. How would you feel when you enter a restaurant and see your ex-girlfriend, talking and laughing, looking very intimate and loving with your step brother? You guessed right…that was exactly how I felt! The moment I had stepped inside with Celeste, my eyes scanned the restaurant, not really searching for anything specific. But there she was. Skylar. It felt like the air had been knocked clean out of my chest. She was sitting at one of the corner tables, dressed in a way I could only call breathtaking. Simple, yet elegant. The kind of beauty that didn’t need screaming gowns or diamonds to shine. She was all grace, her head tilted slightly as she laughed at something Cole said. That sound — her laugh — it wasn’t the soft, polite chuckle I remembered from before. No, this was something brighter, lighter, alive. I hadn’t seen that spark in her for a long time. Maybe not since
