Concordia, Six Hundred and Ninety-Five Years Before

Thaelen bent over the map tracing the coastline of the dragon land with his finger under the flickering lamp light. The ship rocked gently, the ropes holding it to the moorings creaking slightly, a melody against the wash of the waves against the wood, and he accommodated the movement unconsciously, a habit learned centuries ago during raids that had swiftly returned to him.

The drunken revelry of sailors on shore leave as they moved between the taverns that crowded the docks filtered through the cabin walls, and a woman’s laughter rang loudly from nearby and was swiftly hushed, lifting the captain’s head. Someone had brought a whore on board, Thaelen acknowledged with amusement, and would earn the captain’s ire once the ship owner had departed.

“No settlement has succeeded?” Thaelen repeated.
