CHAPTER 4 – Morning Star
Saturday. Today marks the first day of Yuji as my business partner. I had been tired for the whole week and thinking about our conversation yesterday makes my head ached. Anyway, it already happened and nothing will change anymore. I just have to deal with it.
It’s 10 AM in the morning when I went out of the house. I am going to the nearest mall for grocery shopping. Upon arriving, I opened the notes on my phone and look for the list of the things I must buy.
I am planning to have a simple broccoli pasta salad for lunch. I got a rotini pasta, broccoli, tomato paste, and other condiments. I also look for other food and things on my list. Since I am running out of stock of detergent powder, I got some too.
After I pay my grocery, I immediately went out of the supermarket. I stopped by one of my favorite shops and look for some art materials. I needed new paintbrushes since the ones I am using were all worn out. I also bought a new set of acrylic paints.
Painting has been my way of escape for a very long time already. My mind is at peace whenever I hold paintbrushes. When things are messy, I just sit in front of my canvas and my hand will start to move on its own.
In a restaurant in front of this art store, I saw someone familiar. Though it was his just side profile I am seeing, I knew for sure that it was Yuji. He wasn’t alone. I supposed it was his parents whom he is talking to.
I was about to ignore them when Yuji suddenly got up from the chair. Even though I can’t really hear them, it appeared to me that they are quarreling. Both Yuji and his parents wore angry expressions on their faces.
Yuji walked out of the restaurant and went outside of the mall. I followed him.
“Yuji!” I called his attention which made him turn around me.
“Mia? What are you doing here?”
“Uh. I was out for grocery shopping,” I said then raised my hand holding eco-bags.
“-then I saw you with your parents at the restaurant,” I continued.
“Oh. So, you must have seen us argue?”
“Yes. But I couldn’t hear what you are talking about.”
“Alright. See you at school.” He was about to leave when I suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Wait!” I immediately let him go when he faced me.
“How about you have lunch at my place?” I offered. I also have something to talk about with him so this is a good opportunity.
“Lunch?” he questioned, puzzled.
I nodded. “I noticed that you haven’t finished what you are eating a while ago at the restaurant. I also have something to discuss regarding our business.”
--
It was 11:30 AM when we arrived at my apartment. I guided him through the living room as I prepared for our lunch. On the corner of the kitchen, I can see him looking at the painting hanging on the wall of the living room.
Ah, that one. It was an abstract painting of a lady. It was messy… and beautiful.
“Did you paint this one?” He asked. He may have seen the initials below the painting.
“Hmm. When I was in the 9th grade,” I answered as I heat the pasta.
“Do you have a name for this?”
“Yes. ‘The Morning Star.”
“So, if I’m not mistaken, the lady on this painting is Venus—the Goddess of love and beauty.”
“You figured it out that fast. I’m impressed.” As expected from Yuji Villareal. He seemed to know everything.
--
It was almost 1 PM when I finished preparing our lunch. We sat at the dining table facing each other. We started to dig in.
“What I wanted to tell you is that… we must set a schedule.”
He paused on eating and looked at me. “What do you mean by setting a schedule?”
“You see, since we are both running Ringo Dingo, it’s important that we must keep each other updated. I’ll suggest that we must meet every Friday, probably in a nearby café, to give updates.”
“Updates? Like the total money we earn every week?”
“That’s included. We’ll also talk about if there are problems or other related things. We can also have future plans about the business.”
“I’m good with that. In that way, we can track down all the events in our business.”
I smiled. Alright. One step closer to Yuji being under my control, I hope.
--
Yuji went home as soon as we finished our lunch. Meanwhile, I just clean my whole apartment since it’s the weekend. I couldn’t really focus when things are out of order.
I pulled out the art materials I bought earlier and placed them in the corner of my bedroom. This is where I make my paintings and other art stuff. There is a blank canvas on a stand, a dirty palette on top of a table, and below it is different kinds of paints. I love this spot the most.
I was distracted when my phone rang. It was my personal phone. Samantha is calling me.
“Hello?”
“Ysabella! Are you insane?!” Whoa. That was loud.
“Wait, Samantha. What’s the matter?” Why would she yell at me like that? What’s the matter with her?
“Why would you let Yuji run the business with you?! Are you really out of your mind?!” she exclaimed. Ah, right. I haven’t informed her yet since she wasn’t able to attend the meeting last week. It was probably Eunice who told her.
“Okay. Samantha, calm down first. I’ve carefully thought of this. I badly needed Yuji at the moment. You probably heard from the others why.”
“I got your point, but why does it have to be Yuji Villareal?” I can trace the concern in her voice.
“What’s wrong with Yuji?”
“I’ve heard lots of bad things about him from our section. Didn’t Eunice tell you? Some of my classmates used to hang with him.”
“And what?”
“They told me that he used to… he used to…”
“He used to what?!” I don’t know where this conversation is going.
“Yuji used to beat them for unknown reasons… and he extorted money from them as well.”
“What?!” I was utterly shocked and… scared.
D-did Yuji really did those things?
To be continued...
CHAPTER 5 - Unwanted Ever since Samantha told me that thing, I couldn’t help to doubt Yuji. Were those things real? Did he really bully others for money? I don’t know. I don’t have the guts to ask him. I grew even more nervous thinking that this might affect my business. Monday. We are having a History class early this morning. Ugh. It makes me feel so sleepy. Just who the heck decided to put History in the first period?! They should have known that students aren't interested in this kind of stuff first thing in the morning. Much better if we would start the class in some exciting subjects instead. Anyway, I don't have any choice but to attend this. Before the professor ended the class, he gave us a task, “Find a pair and work for the 3rd task in your workbook. You will present it by the next meeting.” Here comes another activity by pair. I am always having a hard time wh
CHAPTER 6 - La Resistencia Wearing a black hoodie and pants, there was Yuji standing exactly outside my apartment. Unknowingly, I rushed downstairs as soon as I saw him outside. “What do you want to tell me?” I asked as soon as I got closer to him. “Samantha confronted me,” he uttered directly looking at my eyes. I tried to break from his gaze, “Samantha? What did she tell you?” Don’t tell me… Seconds have passed yet he still isn’t answering my question. I having anxiety panics because of this deafening silence. I cleared my throat, “What did Samantha tell you?” “It wasn’t true.” “What?” “I never extorted money from others.” For a short while, I felt grateful. I was relieved. Though Yuji wasn’t really the approachable type of person, I still couldn’t see him behaving ruthlessly. But, what if he was lying? What if he’s telling me this just so I wouldn’
CHAPTER 7 - I Will Live To live or die? That was the meaning of Vivir o Morir written in the invitation sent to us. I knew from the start that something is off with that invitation as well as the man who gave it to us. They knew our name and even our contact information. They were able to send us a text message. But what I’m afraid of is the fact that they might also know Ringo Dingo. Seriously, who is behind this La Resistencia? I tried searching them on the web with the hope of finding information but I see nothing. There were no articles and photos related to them. It’s as if they aren’t existing in the first place. Because of what happened yesterday, looks like we don’t have a choice but to attend this welcoming ceremony thingy. We still have three days to decide. I’ll talk with Yuji once again. But every time I remember the text message sent to Yuji yesterday, I couldn’t help to get goosebumps.
CHAPTER 8 - The Danger Ahead Saturday. The weekend came by fast. Tomorrow is the welcoming party of La Resistencia. Since Yuji and I already agreed to attend it, I must prepare for it. I assume that I have to wear formal clothing because it looks like an exclusive party. I mean, there will be a chauffeur that will get us. There was no address mentioned in the invitation. So, I really don't have any clue where they will bring us. It just adds to my worries. Let's just see what will happen tomorrow. Last night, Ms. Amanda, our club adviser, reminded us that there will be a club tour to be held today. This will serve as preparation for the upcoming Club Week in our academy. We are set to visit different art galleries and museums and get ideas from the art pieces we will see. This actually makes me excited because I'm really fond of these things. I have the entire day to distract my thoughts. I won't
CHAPTER 9 – Galleria Inspirato The man started swinging the knife in his hand. He’s swinging it real fast and I’d be dead meat if it touches me. The good thing is I managed to avoid all of his attacks. Though that one attack from earlier almost hit my forehead or did it already? I have no time to think about that. I get ready to prepare for an offense. But how should I do it? Aha! An idea came to my mind. I must get rid of that knife first. Everything will go smoothly if that’s out of the picture. To do that, I have to move quickly and aim for perfect timing. Just when he is about to swing the knife to the left side, I immediately blocked it with my right foot. Clang! Great! The force is just enough for it to slip on the man’s hand. He seems quite flustered because of my sudden moves. He was about to pick the time but I kicked it towards Yuji’s direction. I quickly glanced at him then nodded. He picked the knife then kee
CHAPTER 10 - Gold for Gold “Come on guys, time’s over. We still have two more museums to visit,” Ms. Amanda said. They started to head outside. Wait, what shall I do with this painting? This could give me a clue! I just took a photo of it for now. I’ll check it when I go home. I decided not to tell it to Yuji for now. This might just cause another worry for him. Besides, I’m still not sure what this painting is all about. Who knows that a raven with a rose is just a common symbol used by people. After visiting the Galleria Inspirato, we decided to stop by a restaurant to eat lunch. Everyone is really hungry so we ordered real fast. It is just the start of our tour yet I have already run out of energy. There’s too much happening just for this day. I might not understand a thing when we visit the next museums. After almost an hour, we finished our lunch. We are now on the way to our second destination. What was the name of it ag
CHAPTER 11 – The Welcoming Party“Glad you made it here, Ysabella and Yuji.”Who is this mysterious lady? Could she be the one who sent us the invitation? Who was it again? Ah, IV it is. I’m quite not sure how to pronounce that name though.“Who are you?” I asked. She gave me a smile first before answering me,” You’ll know in a little while. For now, come and follow me. The party’s about to start,” she started to head upstairs.Yuji just gave me a shrug then follow the lady. Before we can fully enter the main door, a couple of guards are in front of it, asking for our invitation before letting us in.“Did you bring it?” asked Yuji.I open my purse then looked for the invitation, “Yes,” I said waving the invitation.Wow. CHAPTER 12 – Meeting IVMartina walked us to the elevator. She pressed the number 4 button. My mind is still trying to process that this is a mansion, not a five-star hotel. But everything looks extravagant so that fact hasn’t sunk in my mind yet.The three of us are waiting for the elevator to reach the fourth floor. Yuji spoke out of nowhere, “Would you mind if I ask?” He turned his head in Martina’s direction. What will he ask? He hasn’t told me anything. He just keeps quiet the whole time so I don’t know what’s exactly going on in his mind.Martina slightly shakes his head, “What did I tell you a while ago? I am in no position to answer your questions. Just wait a little longer.”“But—” Yuji couldn’t finish what he is about to say because the elevator suddenly opened.“We’re here.” Martina walked out of the elevator. Yuji and I sti
CHAPTER 13 – More Than One Point Even before I had Ringo Dingo, I had been into a lot of trouble already. There are times that mom would get mad at me because of this. But so far, Ringo Dingo was the biggest thing I’ve been into. Imagine how mad the school authorities will be if they found out that their top-performing students are just paying me to do their academic stuff. If this will also come out of hand, the school’s image would be tarnished. In worst cases, the overall ranking of Adelaide Academy will definitely drop. Upon knowing those possibilities, I still did not stop running Ringo Dingo. Instead, I am working hard to make my business grow. This is the only way I know that will help me in surviving this life. Even my own parents forgot about me. I haven’t heard a thing from them since the day they left me. It’s funny how I still call them ‘parents’ even though they didn’t treat me as their child. I had no one else to run. It has always been myself a
