~ A M E L I A ~
Flopping my body on my bed, I released a massive sigh, ‘What a day,’ I said to my ceiling.
My phone thunders a vibration. Rolling over to lay on my stomach, I answered the video call request, ‘Hi Mum!’
‘Darling! How was your first day?’ Mum smiled. Her eyes were slightly red, it looked like she’d been crying.
I let out an exaggerated sigh, ‘It was intense, but a good start I think! Have you been crying again?’
‘No!’ She responded almost instantly, pulling out a tissue and dabbing the inner corners of her eyes.
Rolling my eyes, I laughed, ‘Mum, please, I’ll be coming back once I find out the truth about my birth parents and learn how to control my wolf abilities better. I’ve already learnt so much about being a wolf in one day—maybe more than I want to know—but it’s still more than before!’
Mum sighed, ‘I know, sweetie, but I just wish your dad and I could’ve come there with you, but with his work and mine—‘
‘I know, Mum, it’s OK. You raised me to be independent and taught me how to take care of myself. Besides, I don’t know if I would feel comfortable with you guys here. Two humans living in a pack full of werewolves? I imagine that’s asking for trouble, and I can’t risk you both getting hurt because of me.’
Mum nodded, agreeing, ‘But you know I’d do anything for you, sweetheart.’
My heart aches to do this to her and Dad. I could only imagine the worry she felt on a daily basis. The love a parent has for their child, the very concept of it sounded supernatural in itself. The things they would do to protect them, they would move heaven and earth if they could.
Changing the subject would be best, so I didn’t upset Mum anymore, but she beat me to it, ‘Have you made any friends yet?’
I beamed, ‘I think one so far, her name is Sammy, she actually invited me to a small gathering later tonight.’
Mum furrowed her brows, ‘A party on a school night?’
‘Muuuuum!’
She chortled. Finally, some joy in her there. I loved it when she laughed, ‘Just don’t be out too late, darling, and be safe.’
Letting out a titter, I nodded, ‘I promise. Give Dad a hug from me when he’s back from work, tell him I love him, and I love you, Mum.’
Gosh, she looked like she was going to cry again, ‘I love you too, sweetheart.’
We ended the conversation and I pulled myself together, rubbing the inner corners of my eyes with my ring fingers to avoid any more tears escaping. No more tears.
Stay focused, Amelia. Remember why you’re here.
Deciding it was probably best to change into something nicer for a party, I rummaged through my boxes (which I seriously needed to unpack). Finalising my decision to wear some high-waist jean shorts and a mocha jumper, pairing that with my brown boots that meet midway between my ankle and knees.
One thing I had recently noticed in my transition to becoming a werewolf was that the cold didn’t affect me. It was hard to properly test it as it was spring, so the days were pretty warm, but the evenings got pretty cold, and it was then that I noticed it didn’t bother me at all, to the point of not feeling the requirement of having a jacket.
My own body temperature did seem higher too, so that would make sense; my body was always warm but not uncomfortable for me. I could only imagine how much I’d be able to withstand when having full access to my abilities.
Releasing my hair out of the ponytail I had all day, I scratched my head and shook my hair to loosen it and fall into place. My usual loose curls were more subtle waves at the moment but looked good enough that I didn’t need to do anything to them. I refreshed my makeup with a top-up of blusher and a neutral-tinted lip balm and finished with a soft spray of perfume to really feel refreshed.

Sammy said the party was being hosted in the woods, but I’d clearly forgotten that this whole village was in and surrounded by all things woodsy. Trees and foliage everywhere, and I did mean everywhere. It was utterly fitting for the location of a werewolf pack. It made total sense for them to be with as much of nature as possible.
Luckily, her description of how to find the party was surprisingly detailed. She even went as far as to send photos and draw arrows on them for extra guidance.
Finally, I found the location of the party, following the sound of the music. The sky was twinged with the last hues of orange, ready to turn into night at any moment. In the centre of the party, there was a fire pit keeping the party lit. Surrounded by it were multiple large logs, carved into them for more comfortable seating.
A group of guys were hanging out together a bit further in the distance, shouting and laughing whilst chugging drinks. I couldn’t make out exactly who they were, but I knew barely anyone yet, so it didn’t really matter. A few girls were near the boys, it appeared that they were giggling and whispering to one another. Sammy and a few others were seated by the fire pit, chatting away and having a great time.
I felt a lump in my throat slowly forming. There were a lot of people here. People I didn’t know. People I wasn’t sure whether I could allow myself to get to know, or allow them to get to know me.
Maybe I shouldn’t have come.
‘Amelia, over here!’ Sammy called, waving at me.
Too late to back out now. I made my way over and smiled, ‘Hey! Thanks again for the invitation.’
‘Of course! I’ll introduce you to the host when he’s back. You look gorgeous, by the way. Come sit, sit!’
Laughing, I sat next to Sammy on the same log she was sitting on. She had so much enthusiasm in her, it was sort of overwhelming in a way, but also refreshing to see someone openly energetic about life.
She poured a drink and handed it over to me, ‘Here, do you like beer?’
Smiling awkwardly, ‘It’s not my favourite, but I’ll have one, thanks,’ I took the cup and had a swig. The taste was bitter, making my nose wrinkle, but then a subtle twist of citrus lingered in the aftertaste, making it a little more enjoyable.
The fire in the pit drew my attention. I watched as the embers broke from the body, dancing and flickering away into the air. Seeming to be nothing in comparison to the grandness of the main flame, but equally just as important in reality. Like each of the branches of a tree or each ripple of a wave. All have their own purpose. All have their own story in this game we call life.
There had always been a strange discomfort I had around fire. As much as I fought the sprouting fear, trying to justify to myself that I had no reason to feel such uneasiness around it, but the warmth and peace it had could also bring danger and destruction.
‘So, Amelia,’ a girl I didn’t yet know spoke, breaking my gaze at the pit, ‘What’s your story?’
I raised my brows, ‘My story?’
‘Yeah, like where do you come from? Who are your parents? Did you come from a different pack? Or did you not even know you were a werewolf to begin with?’ She looked at me in a way like the last question would be a wildly far-fetched thing to even ask. When, in actuality, for me, it was a totally accurate question to be asking.
Sammy sighed with some attitude, ‘For goddess sake, Vicky. We all know you’re asking these questions so you can gossip about her tomorrow at school.’
Vicky flicked her blonde hair, rolling her eyes, ‘I’m just trying to get to know the new girl. It’s truly a blue moon having a new werewolf moving into the pack.’
‘Why don’t you just go flirt with the Shaw brothers? We all know that’s the real reason you’re even here.’
Vicky pulled a disgusted face at Sammy, then relaxed when looking at me, ‘It’s OK if you’re scared to answer these questions, I know I can be intimidating,’ she flicked her hair again. I got the feeling she did that a lot.
Another girl ran over to us and squealed, ‘Vicky!’
‘What now, Kornelia?’ She said in a harsh tone with a vexed look on her face. ‘Can’t you see I’m in the middle of a conversation?’
‘Guess who just took his jacket off, and you can see all his abs poking through his T-shirt!’
Her face dropped, ‘No way. Where?’ she jumped up and rushed after Kornelia as she ran off.
These girls were seriously going that crazy, over a guy?
I looked over to Sammy, who shrugged and rolled her eyes before laughing and shaking her head, ‘Don’t even ask,’ she said.
‘I don’t think I even want to know.’
We both laughed.
Chugging the rest of her drink, then dramatically jumping to a stand, ‘I hate to say I agree with Vicky, but… I am curious about you too!’ Sammy said, pointing at me.
I giggled, ‘You are? Also, how much have you had to drink?’
‘That’s beside the point!’ She waved her hand in front of her face. It was clear that she had a lot. She swayed a little dance and continued, ‘So far I’ve learnt nothing but your name; in fact, only your first name! Surely there’s something you can share?’
Shaking my head and tittering, ‘OK… My name is Amelia Higgins. I’m seventeen, but I’ll be eighteen in July. I’m pretty active in different sports, but I also like gardening, baking and reading…’ I trailed off with a smile, hoping that’d be enough to satisfy her for now.
She sat back down and eagerly looked at me, ‘What else?’
Swallowing thickly, I tried to piece together something else to say, ‘Well—’
‘SAMMY LOOK OUT!’ A male voice shouted in the distance.
The world around me became sedated in time. I could hear my heartbeat drumming in my ears. My body was frozen, but my head turned enough to see an arrow coming from the distance and going in the direction of where Sammy sat. Based on its current velocity, as it passed my face, the arrow was set to hit her right between the eyes.
~ A M E L I A ~A short and somewhat clement gasp escaped Sammy’s mouth. Eyes wide at first, then suddenly blinking over and over again as the arrow stands still right in front of her face. Whatever alcohol she has consumed, in combination with her shock, has numbed her enough to be motionless. My breathing was heavy, but overflowing with relief. My eyes locked onto my fist, clenched around the shaft of the arrow, astounded at my own reflexes kicking in so fast, despite my mind running so slowly.I knew the transition to becoming a werewolf was to gain enhanced abilities, but I didn’t expect it to be to this extent. I’ve been severely underestimating everything so far. How much stronger could I possibly become? ‘Holy fuck…’ Sammy uttered in an exhalation, so quietly that if it wasn’t for my heightened hearing, I surely wouldn’t
~ A M E L I A ~‘That was amazing!’ Sammy said, still breathless, but her cheerful tone had returned, as she rushed over to me, ‘Please tell me that wasn’t your first time shooting an arrow?’‘Thankfully not,’ I said, breaking a smile, ‘I was one of the best archers in my hometown.’A scoff came from Everett’s direction. I darted another scowl at him. What a jackass.Turning back to Sammy, ‘Are you OK? I’m so sorry I put you through that, I didn’t mean to—’‘It’s fine, Amelia! I’m fine!’ She held my shoulders, ‘The fact that you stood up for me when you just met me, really means a lot,’ she hugged me.As she pulled back from the hug, I glanced down at the bow, amazed that I w
~ E V E R E T T ~‘What is wrong with you?’ Gabriel yelled at me, following behind me as I continued walking away from the girl with the amber eyes.Groaning, I didn’t even bother looking at him, ‘Leave me alone, Gabe,’ I said, chugging the rest of my beer before grabbing another bottle.‘Amelia didn’t deserve that, she didn’t know any better—‘‘Amelia?’ I turned to face him, annoyed, ‘You know her name? So you lied to me when I picked you up from school today. You said you didn’t speak to her.’Gabriel hesitated for a moment but then huffed, ‘Okay, fine, I spoke to her very briefly, but all I know is her name.’I pulled Gabriel to the side of the food and drinks table, where less people are, handed him a beer and
~ A M E L I A ~As the weekend finally approached, I was elated with the opportunity to not only explore the village more but also find the best places to learn more about the Silver Moon pack, and hopefully, eventually, my parents too.Walking through the village, I couldn’t help but admire how beautifully built it was, with smooth cobblestone paths weaving through to guide you from building to building. The homes themselves were so classic looking, with thatched roofs and exposed timber frames, it almost felt as if they were pulled straight out from the Tudor times. It was a refreshing sight to see.Even with the village glacially adapting to an urban environment, the natural environment was one with the village too. The whole village was surrounded and encapsulated by trees, and there were even random trees locat
~ E V E R E T T ~‘Who was that, sweetheart?’ My mother asked as I approached her.Rolling my eyes, I shook my head, ‘Nobody important.’‘I’ve not seen her around before, is she that new wolf everyone is talking about?’ She peered over, staring at her inquisitively.Running my fingers through my hair, I huffed, ‘Like I said, she’s nobody important.’ I looked back to see Amelia wandering around the village, her eyes glistened as she gazed upon her surroundings. Those innocent-looking eyes are hiding a dark secret, I just know it.As I turned back around, Mum raised a brow at me and shook her head, ‘You need to stay focused, now more than ever, Everett,’ she clasped her hands together and kept them low, h
~ A M E L I A ~It’s warm. No, it’s hot. Scalding.Fire.There’s a fire.Oh god, not again…My eyes fluttered open and, as they came to focus, my entire surroundings were engulfed in flames. Don’t panic. Do not panic.I couldn’t move. I can never move. The flames were inching closer and closer. The heat of the flames stung my skin, though not yet touching me. A deafening scream plunged my eardrums. No. Screams. Many others were screaming. What is happening? As the flames came closer to my skin, my body felt like it was ready to shut down, even though all I wanted to do was fight, but I was helpless, motionless. Suddenly, a shadow-like figure appeared in the distance. It appeared to scan the entire room, before setting its gaze towards me. I couldn’t determine whether it was a man or a woman; was it human? ~ A M E L I A ~The universe is out to get me. That was the only reason I could think as to why I was forced to be taught by Everett-bloody-Shaw. His eyes were still locked onto mine, but in a slow blink he focused his gaze elsewhere, as if he didn’t care for me being present. He pulled off his jacket and threw it behind him on the ground, revealing himself in a black compression shirt and dark grey jogging bottoms. The shirt wrapped around his defined muscles as if it was made specifically for his body, he was even more ripped than I thought. His abs do poke through his shirt. Trying to focus my gaze elsewhere, I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of staring at him since he was already full of himself enough, but my attention went to his arms, which I had no idea were fully tattooed. I couldn’t catch the details of it all, but I did get a glimpse of what looked like a deer skull on one of his forearms; he kept moving, so I couldn’t see it all, but it definitely looked like t
~ A M E L I A ~Sprinting towards him, I tried to pull together the knowledge I had for fighting. I felt so thankful that my parents had me in so many different extracurriculars growing up, which included kickboxing, Karate and Taekwondo. However, my fear was casting a shadow over all my knowledge. I couldn’t recall what to do. I couldn’t strategise. Everett raised a foot lightly, dragging it back just an inch, ready to make his move, ready to analyse me. Wait, he did that before, with Kenneth. Kenneth pulled his right—no—his left fist back, which made Everett pull his left foot back to counter-attack. I can do this. I just need to think tactically. Pulling my left fist back as I approached closer to Everett, who had pulled his left foot back further. His eyes were locked on me, like a hungry predator watching his prey, waiting for me to fall into his trap so he could make the kill; but I was ready. I had a plan.As I approached him, I swung my fist towards him, just as Kenneth di
~ A M E L I A ~The day before the full moon, everyone in the village was on edge about what may or may not come. All my friends were feeling extra agitated. The closer the full moon came, the more heightened their emotions and abilities were, edging closer to shifting, but not having access to do it at their own free will. It was devastating to see their struggle. I was even feeling the moon’s effect more in comparison to last month, as my eighteenth birthday was nearing. It only made me sympathise more with the rest of the pack, as what I felt was a mere fraction against everyone else.‘Can someone please tell me why we’re spending our Wednesday evening in the gym?’ Sammy huffed, sitting on the floor by the weights. Theo frowned, ‘I thought it would be a good idea for us to release some of the steam we’ve all got building up in us, and for us to hang out together.’Sammy’s eyes rounded, ‘Oh, babe!’ She hugged him tightly, ‘You’re too cute.’Kaylee and I rolled our eyes. ~ A M E L I A ~He pushed me.He pushed me……off a cliff! A CLIFF.That bastard. The second he pushed me, my heart sank to my stomach and felt like it was going to fall out of my rear with the amount of anxiety and fear that consumed me. I knew I should never have trusted him. I gasped loudly, not having time to process my impending death, but… There was no splat. Why was there no splat? My eyes were squeezed shut so tight, I thought my eyelids were going to rip. A few seconds passed, and enough courage grew within me, I peeled my eyes open and saw Everett gripping my forearms. He was smiling. That arsehole still had that smug smirk plastered all over his stupidly handsome face. If he hadn’t been preventing me from sudden death, I would slap him silly. I snarled, ‘What the fuck are you playing at?’ I yelled, ‘Pull me up!’Everett’s head tilted to the side, his smirk growing stronger with each second going by, as my distaste for him also grew, ‘Now, now, where would the fun in
~ E V E R E T T ~The morning air was much cooler than usual. It had rained for a couple of hours last night, but a few hours of sun had already dried up the ground, leaving the only evidence of rain in the refreshing, crisp air. Taking in a deep breath, filling my lungs with the chilled air, and enjoying the view of the lake. It was one of my favourite places to be. In the distance, I could hear steps approaching. Amelia.I could tell it was her immediately, not only because no one else ever comes to this side of the forest, and not even from the sound of her steps, but from her scent. A scent that was ingrained into my mind— floral and citrusy. Elegance and beauty with a twist and tang, it was a fitting scent for her. ‘You know,’ Amelia said in a subtle huff, ‘you could’ve just told me to pack my bag for a hike instead of sneaking a note into my pocket like a creep.’ A faint smirk peaked on one side of my mouth, I turned to face her, my arms crossed as I leaned against a tree, ‘
~ A M E L I A ~I knew I could speak for all my friends when I said that we were all grateful to have the first and second period free. It was put in place for revision in the lead-up to our final exams, but we took it as an excuse to go out clubbing on a Thursday night. What a wild night it turned out to be.The plan was to have breakfast at the diner before heading to school together. Hudson and I were already running very late, and as tempted as we were to be even later… we were both starving. So I quickly got myself together and we headed to the diner. As soon as we entered, a random group of people cheered and whistled at me.‘It’s the girl that stood up to Betty!’ One of them called. That made a bunch of other people in the diner turn and star

Turning her head to the side slightly, indicating her communication to her blonde friend, but her eyes stayed locked on mine, ‘What do you think, Ella?’The blonde, Ella, eyed me up and down, just as Betty did, ‘I don’t see it,’ she said in a condescending tone. Another innocent face hiding her true colours.‘No,’ Betty scoffed, ‘neither do I.’ She crossed her arms and gazed at me with narrow eyes,

It’s okay, I’m 18 in…’ I counted on my fingers sluggishly, the alcohol was hitting me now, ‘two months! Oh, and a day.’He moved his face closer, and seriousness was painted all over him, ‘I’ve had a strange feeling all day like something bad was going to happen, then I see you here and that feeling has intensified.’I scoffed, ‘Everett, I promise I’m here to have fun, not to cause trouble like you always think.’Looking deep into my eyes, his face softened, ‘I didn’t say you wer
