Jade
The drive to the Nightingale pack lands felt surreal, like I was traveling back in time. The last time I had been here, I was a naive teenager madly in love with the Alpha's son. Now I was a grown woman and mother of three, only returning under ominous circumstances.Helena insisted on coming with me, despite my protests."You're not doing this alone," she said firmly as she loaded the last of my things into her SUV. "I'll help you get settled, and be right here if that bastard Brad tries anything."I smiled weakly, appreciating her protectiveness even if it complicated things. We rode in tense silence, the weight of what I had to do pressing down on me. Helena kept shooting me worried glances."I really don't like this, Jade," she finally said as we passed the 'Welcome to Nightingale Territory' sign. "We can still turn around and call the cops."I shook my head, even as my heart tightened. "You heard him. I don't have a choice if I want to see the kids again."Helena cursed under her breath. "I swear, if that rat lays one finger on you..."I took her hand and squeezed it. "It'll be okay. I can handle Brad." At least, I hoped I could. We pulled up to the small furnished apartment I had rented on the edge of the pack grounds. It was dingy and cramped compared to my beautiful home, but it would do for now.Helena stayed late, fussing over me and triple checking the locks. I finally had to shoo her out."Go home and get some rest," I insisted. "I'll be fine."She pulled me into a crushing hug. "Call me every night, okay? And if he tries anything, anything at all, I'll rain hell on him like a category five tornado," she threatened.I chuckled softly. "I will. Now go before they kick you off the pack lands for being human."After Helena reluctantly left, I finished unpacking in the depressing little apartment. Mr. N wanted me to report to the Alpha first thing tomorrow, to gain approval for living on the lands as a lone omega.I curled up on the lumpy mattress, exhaustion weighing me down. But sleep eluded me, my thoughts churning with how I would convince the Alpha - Brad - to let me stay. I had to succeed, for my children's sake. Finally I drifted off into a fitful sleep. The next morning, I took a steadying breath. Time to put on a show.I chose my most professional yet alluring outfit - a fitted dress suit that highlighted my curves. A touch of makeup and heels completed the look. If I was going to play femme fatale, I had to sell it.My Tesla purred softly as I wound through the sprawling pack territory. Wolves turned to stare, clearly wondering who the strange woman driving an expensive car was.I kept my eyes forward. It was showtime. The main pack house was an imposing chateau-style mansion. As I stepped out, whispers broke out around me."Who's that? A new Luna?""With that car? Maybe she's an elite from the city."Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar bleach-blonde head pushing through the crowd. Megan, the girl who had taunted me at the mating ceremony years ago. Her mouth dropped open in shock."No way! It's Jade!" She glared at me suspiciously. "What's she doing back here?"I merely smiled, removing my sunglasses slowly. "Megan. What a...pleasure, to see you again."Before she could respond, I sauntered into the pack house, leaving the gossiping wolves behind. Just get through this meeting first, I told myself. The polished oak doors of the alpha's office loomed ahead. I could scent Brad inside. My heart pounded, but I kept my face smooth and confident."You can do this, Jade. For Natasha, Nathan, and Natalia." I steeled myself. At my light knock, a distracted "Come in" sounded.Brad sat at a massive desk, surrounded by the sleek trappings of power. He had grown more ruggedly handsome. When he glanced up from his papers, interest sparked in his emerald eyes."Well, hello. What can I do for you?" His gaze roved over me appreciatively.I gave a slight, business-like smile. "Alpha Bradley. We need to discuss my joining your pack."He blinked in surprise. "Joining? I don't believe we've met..." Understanding lit his face. "You must be Dr. Jade Wolfe."I inclined my head. "The one and only."Brad stared, comprehension dawning. "Jade? Little Jade, from Willow Creek orphanage?"I arched a brow coolly. "Not so little anymore, as you can see."He flushed slightly. "Forgive me, you're just...not what I expected." His eyes lingered on my legs."I've done quite well for myself. But I'd like to formally join a pack now, to establish myself."Like a true politician, Brad smoothly transitioned to business matters, clearly eager to have such a prestigious wolf doctor join his pack. We ironed out the details briskly."Well, welcome to the Nightingales, Jade. It will be nice to...catch up." Brad's smile held a hint of suggestiveness.I stood gracefully. "Indeed. I look forward to settling in." With a final enigmatic look, I left him to his work.Phase one complete. I allowed myself a small smile of satisfaction as I exited the ornate building. Brad was already intrigued, his eyes drawn to my very different adult self. Now to ramp up the charm and really reel him in.I quickly shot Helena a text that it had gone well. She responded immediately asking me to call her tonight.Pocketing my phone securely, I headed back to my apartment. I had taken the first step in infiltrating the Nightingale Pack. Now I just had to make Brad fall for me again.Easier said than done when he was my worst enemy. But I pictured my children's lives depending on it. For them, I could do anything.Later that evening I called Helena as promised to check in."How'd it go?" she asked immediately. "Did you see Brad?"I sighed, curling up on the lumpy couch. "Briefly. He was surprised to see me. I got approval from the Alpha to stay, so that's something.""And they bought your story about just being there as a doctor?" Helena pressed."I think so. Although..." I hesitated, then told her about the unnerving new Beta. Apparently the real threat in my entire mission was getting past his perceptiveness. I had done my research before coming here. Apparently, a new beta joined a few years after I left, and nothing, I mean nothing, gets past him.Helena groaned. "Great, that's all we need is some shifty masked guy watching your every move.""I know. I'll have to be extra careful." I stifled a yawn. It had been an exhausting day."Get some rest," Helena said gently. "You did good today, Jade. First day down. I'll come by soon to check on you, okay?""Okay. Love you, Helena." I reluctantly hung up, already missing her reassuring presence. After a simple dinner, I decided to take a walk around the pack to get my mind off my kids. I texted the burner phone Mr N had given me. He'd request to keep him updated on all things.'Arrived safely. Phase one complete. Target is interested and willing to bring me into the pack.' I texted. My finger hesitated over the send button. This felt wrong, dirty. But I had no choice. I hit send.Just then, a large figure rounded the corner, colliding with me. My phone flew from my hands. I gasped as the formidable man deftly caught it before it hit the ground. Dread settling like a stone in my stomach as I took in his imposing form and the curious look he gave my device."Terribly sorry about that, miss. I should pay more attention to where I'm going." His voice was a pleasant rumble. He handed the phone back and I nearly fainted in relief when the screen was dark.Taking a subtle breath, I assessed him closer. Tall and broad-shouldered, with an air of quiet confidence. But it was the distinctive black mask covering the top half of his face that gave away his identity.Beta Conan, Brad's second-in-command. Really? Is my luck this shitty? Running into the very person I had to avoid on my first day?I tried to keep my tone light despite my pounding heart. "No harm done. I'm still getting familiar with the grounds." I extended a hand. "Dr. Jade Wolfe."He shook politely. "A pleasure. Welcome to the pack." His piercing golden gaze seemed to see right through me. "I don't mean to pry, but that message you tried to send....."..."I stiffened imperceptibly, gulping, I managed to keep my tone light. "Oh, it's just an inside joke with a friend."He studied me a moment longer before snearing."Really? Phase one complete? Target is interested and willing to bring me into the pack." His voice was like gravel. My mind spun wildly.Shit! How much had he seen? The man's eyes narrowed. "I'm Conan, Beta of Nightingale Pack," he rumbled. "And I don't like spies in my pack."Shit! My cover was blown, hours into this scheme. Conan would surely report my suspicious behavior to Brad. What now?JadeI stared up at the hulky man looming over me. Conan was a mountain of muscle and authority, his tall frame casting me in shadow. Golden eyes glinted from behind a black leather mask covering the lower half of his rugged face. Those piercing eyes were fixed on me now, hard and assessing. I suppressed a shudder under that intense gaze. Of all the easygoing wolves in Alpha Bradley's pack, only Conan seemed to exude true menace. He was the enforcer, swift and merciless to any threat. Every instinct warned me to avoid him at all costs. Yet here I was, trapped and exposed."Well?" Conan's voice rumbled deep in his chest. "Explain yourself."I scrambled desperately for some excuse, some logical reason for the suspicious messages he glimpsed on my phone screen. But under pressure, nothing remotely convincing came to mind. After a tense silence, Conan crossed his massive arms. "Since you seem unwilling to explain, I have no choice but to r
JadeTaking a deep, shaky breath, I broke into fresh tears. Conan stared at me dumbfounded for a moment, then cursed under his breath as he scrambled to grab tissues from the box on his desk. I cried loudly and messily, blowing my nose with heart-wrenching sobs. Black streaks of mascara ran down my cheeks as I wept into the tissues, no doubt looking like a distraught mess, but it was necessary for my act. "You see," I started, dabbing my eyes as my voice quivered emotionally, "Brad and I dated about six years ago, back when we were teenagers. He was...my everything."I launched into a bittersweet flashback, wanting to show Conan our supposed history instead of just telling it in boring summary. I described my lonely childhood growing up in the local orphanage after my parents died - shy, bullied and friendless with only books for company. Meanwhile, Brad was the golden boy at our high school - devastatingly handsome, star athlete, crazy popular, and
JadeI let out a heavy sigh as I sank down onto the lumpy mattress in my dingy temporary apartment. What a mess this day had turned into. Reaching for my burner phone, I quickly typed out an update to Mr. N. 'Minor complication. The beta, Conan, saw a suspicious message on my phone. I spun him a story about wanting revenge on Brad for breaking my heart years ago. He seems to buy it for now, but will be keeping close tabs on me. I'll be careful.'I stared at the blinking cursor, hesitating. Should I mention Conan's absurd contract demanding I provide free medical services to the pack? No, best to keep some cards close to my chest. It's better if he doesn't know all about Conan. Yes. I deleted the message and hit the phone in the bedside drawer. Next I called Helena, needing to hear her cheerful voice after the stressful events of the day."Hey girl, how are you holding up?" she asked gently when she picked up.I flopped bac
JadeThe following morning, I woke up with determination that surpassed the doubt and fear that had plagued me the previous night. It was another new day, and I had a mission to focus on, one that meant everything to me: the safety and well-being of my kidnapped children.I got up, performed my morning routine, and tried to ignore the nagging voice inside my head that reminded me of my lies. I had convinced Conan of my intentions, but I knew that my ruse could crumble at any moment, exposing the truth of my plan to use him in my quest for revenge. As I stepped out of my dingy apartment, I noticed a text message from Conan popped up on my burner phone. It read: "Meet me at the pack's infirmary. We need to discuss your role in more detail."I sighed. This was my chance to learn more about my task and, hopefully, gain some information about the pack especially Brad's current relationship with his mate, Trina. I quickly sent a reply agreeing to meet him and headed to the infirmary. The inf
JadeA short while later, as I continued my duties, Conan appeared at the entrance of the infirmary. He leaned casually against the doorframe, his gaze fixed on me. "Everything okay?" he asked, his voice low.I nodded, grateful for his presence. "Yes, just a surprise visit from the alpha. He inquired about our friendship."Conan's lips quirked into a sly smile. "Well, speaking of our friendship, how about we make it more convincing?"I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What do you have in mind?"Conan pushed himself off the doorframe and approached me, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "How about we go on a date, right in front of Brad?"My eyes widened in surprise. I hadn't expected such a bold suggestion. "A date? Are you sure that's a good idea?"Conan shrugged nonchalantly. "Why not? It's all part of the act, and it'll drive Brad crazy with jealousy. Plus, we could use some time to relax and have fun, even if it's fake."I considered his proposal. The idea of a date in front of
JadeOur breaths mingled in the cold, dark night as his head bent closer and closer. The space between us collapsed. His body heat was a living, breathing thing, clouding my mind and stealing my focus until my world consisted of nothing except dark eyes, soft wool, and the clean, expensive scent of citrus and wood.Goose bumps rose on my sensitized skin.I took a small step back and bumped against the door at my back. I exhaled, my back flushed against the cold, hard metal of the apartment's door.I cleared my throat. "What…what are we doing?"My voice didn’t sound like mine. It was too thin, too breathless, but Conan had snuffed out the oxygen in the room. I couldn’t breathe fast enough or deeply enough to sustain a clear head.“Jade,” he murmured. “You know exactly what it is we are doing.” Gone was the formalities. In their place were velvet and smoke, whispering silent promises against my skin and compelling me to tilt my face up. Heaviness gathered low in my belly, thick and molt
JadeI couldn't deny the logic in his words, and I nodded in agreement. "All right, let's do it. When and where?"Conan's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Tomorrow night, it's a surprise, but don't worry. It'll be the perfect setting for our next performance."We quickly set the details for our upcoming fake date. I wondered how much more complicated our relationship would become. My determination to find my children and reunite our family kept me moving forward, no matter how treacherous the path. The day of our planned date arrived, and as evening settled over the pack's territory, I couldn't ignore the ecstacy building within me. This time, Conan had chosen a more casual setting for our "date," a quaint cafe nestled on the outskirts of the pack's territory. The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the world in a dusky hue as we sat across from each other at a cozy table on the cafe's outdoor patio.I sipped my hot coffee, letting the warmth spread through me as I glanced at Con
Jade"A ball?" I asked, my left eyebrow raised in skepticism as I stared at the boyish, spoiled Alpha lounging in the chair opposite me."Yes. You are one of the most sought-after pack doctors in the country. You could have joined any pack you wanted to, but you decided to join the Nightingale Pack. The ball will serve as our warm welcome to you.""Oh, but you don't have to do that." I said as I tried to hide the shiver that was running through my body at the thought of a ball thrown in my honor by the very same people who had bullied and humiliated me.Another ball came to mind, one that had happened six years ago. My fists clenched as I thought of that horrid night, and at that very moment, I wanted to tear out the eyes of the man who was seated across me, smiling as though he was goddess' gift to mankind.Brad leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "You'll attend. It's non-negotiable. Besides, it's not just for you; it's for the entire pack to see our commitment to you
ConanI had won the fight between Brad and I. The fight which had spanned over years and decades and finally came up victorious. He returned to his human self as I did the same. I looked around to see the grounds which had been broken and filled with blood and machines.“All of this just to take me down,” I chuckled as he slowly healed and sat up, but he was too tired to do anything.“Don’t flatter yourself,” he coughed up a tooth. “It was for an entire country.”“And yet I took down your entire army single-handedly.”He growled at me. “Who are you? What kind of monster are you?”“The monster that you created, Brad!” I yelled in anger. “I used to have a home, a family, a mother and a father who loved me. I used to have a brother I thought was my better half but he turned out to be a monster.”Suddenly he got the hint of what I was saying as his eyes widened. “Yes Brad, we are both siblings. You were supposed to be my brother, my friend and the one who would watch my back. Instead you
ConanI stared at the robots before me that had halted, before looking at Brad, Trina and a strange lady in a snowy pack uniform. She had to be the one controlling these beasts. She stepped forward with a devious smile on her face.“You were the one who put my sister in a body bag,” she laughed. “You beat her so much she could not survive, so she succumbed to her wounds. That was my younger sister. I am going to make sure these machines deal so much damage to you, you wouldn’t even feel your jaw by the time they dislocate your body parts with punches.”I yawned. “You show up at my doorstep intending to have a war with me. I think we should start this war before arguing over who is stronger and who is not.”She laughed. “A feisty man I see. Very well. Let’s see how feisty you will be by the time they are done with you.”She pushed a button as the robots all turned to me.I counted at least twenty robots. The last
JadeI had not seen this coming. Now I knew we were really screwed. Conan has struggled against one of these creatures before being jumped by multiple. None of us could stand against this creature. It was too powerful for us to fight. We had to run out of here and give up the pack.“What is that thing?” a general gasped with the other warriors on the field watching this strange creature walk towards us.It seemed to have a few minor upgrades. Its arms were now made of iron, it wasn’t seven or eight foot tall like the last time. It had a sleek design but this was made to rival alpha’s and I was sure all of these new designs made it lighter and faster.“We need to get back to the pack and get everyone to safety,” I noted. “If we stay here we are going to die and lose everything. We need to get the people in the pack to safety first.”But the generals were still fascinated by what they were seeing.“General!
Jade“Good luck,” she hugged me. “And make sure you don’t die or I will kill you myself.”I wasn’t going to argue with her on how ridiculous that was but instead I would leave her to her thoughts.I headed out with the generals and the elders all wearing their armors. Our army had gone ahead of us to halt them ahead of time before they would get into the pack. If they got in, it was over. They would destroy our pack and kill our civilians too.We had nowhere to run or hide, this pack was all we had going for us.“So… have we sent word to our allies?” I asked while we rode in the battle van to the battlefield.“No one responded so it’s either they haven’t seen the message yet or they don’t want help. Either way we are on our own,” an elder responded. That was a strange thing. Every alpha was supposed to respond to a distress call from another alpha. It was an unwritten rule, unless the two packs had a silent war going on between them.We got to the field and I found how deadly it was.
Brad“That’s because you might be extremely cheap with the way you were banging her throughout. But you should know this,” she threatened. “The next time you sleep with someone else is the day I leave you for someone better and take all my forces with me. Do you hear me?”I could easily push her away but Trina had one of the best land forces who could fight even dangerous rogues without breaking a sweat and I needed them by my side. I had no choice but to accept her decision.“Yes,” I said. A knock came on the door as I opened it to find a maid there.“What is it?” I asked.“There is a call for you on line three.”I slammed the door on her face, zipping to take up the call.“Hello,” I said.“Conan is out of the game,” the voice said. “He’s been in a coma in the hospital for days now. I don’t think he’s going to make it out alive.”This gave me hope for my invasion. With Conan out of the equation, I would kill off his pack without difficulty. He was the greatest asset his pack had.*
Brad“Well,” I smiled, spreading my arms. “There goes my element of surprise.”“Oh please,” she stood up, zipping to stand before me. “I wasn’t expecting anyone to show up.”She brought her face too close to mine and her cold breath hit my hot face. The tension between us climbed to greater heights before she grabbed my hand and zipped me to a room where I tore her clothes and she removed mine.I was inside her within minutes while she moaned and we broke the bed with our combined force. When we were done, we laid in the mess we had created, fascinated by each other's strengths.“Does your wife give you sex the way I give you?” she smirked naughtily which had me kissing her breast before sitting up.“She’s not to be in this conversation,” I said. I hated having intimate discussions with those I slept with. They were not to know about my immediate family. That was something I should keep away from us. “I see you don’t want to talk about her. Very well then, why are you in my pack?“I c
BradI paced around the bedroom, wondering why my men weren’t picking up their calls.“Do you think they panicked and chewed the pill?” Trina asked.“That’s their own business.”“You held their wives and children captive and told them to track and take back your children or you would kill them. They could take the pill just to save their children.”I didn’t care about the dead. What I wanted now was a way to get back my children. If that was not going to be possible then there was only one thing to do. I would have to get back to the snow pack and make an alliance with them. I was sure they would want to know who had almost killed their queen.“I’ll be back,” I said, leaving her in the room as I headed for the garage to get into my car and drive off.The desert wolves were about to learn the meaning of what surrender looked like.I would first take back my back from the hands of my conquerors and then tear down their packs. After that, I would head for Conan’s pack and kill him and J
JadeShe cleaned a tear which fell off her eye, trailing a line down to her cheek. This must have been a very painful experience for her but I was still wondering why she was telling me this story.“I left him and headed out of town to come here,” she sighed. “The last time I checked on him, he was married to a fellow werewolf with four children and leading his pack as a warrior and the most feared one in his pack. I have wondered over the years if maybe if I had stayed with him, would I have brought him peace or agony?”“The only way to have known anything about that would have been you trying to get back with him and working your differences,” I smiled, now knowing what she was bringing the story for.“Exactly,” she smiled. “Now that’s the same thing for you and Conan. Instead of leaving him where he is in the hospital and running off in the model of the night like I did, not knowing if you were meant for him or not, you can work out your differences with him. “I recently found out
JadeI told her everything about what had happened and throughout my entire story, she didn’t interrupt me or say anything that distracted me.She was the only human friend I had made who actually listened to me. She was different from most of the people I had met.Even werewolves were not as good as she was. When I was done, she smiled at me, dragging me in for a hug while placing my head on her shoulder.“I’m very sure he wouldn’t listen to my pleas,” I sighed. “He probably hates me right now. I’m sure of it.”“No he doesn’t,” she sighed. “You have to talk to someone to know their true intentions.”“I don’t know about that. I’m sure he hates me. I betrayed him, Helena. I brought him to his knees. That’s not how a mate should behave. I should help him and not destroy him. I destroyed him.”My voice cracked while I let her go, standing to my feet to pace around the room.“And do you want to know the worst part of all of this?” I asked as she shook her head. “It’s the part where when
