Everyone was already digging into breakfast when Kris made it into the ranch house the next morning. She'd hoped by this time Mason would have eaten and gone to do whatever it was he normally did during the day.

Yesterday, as soon as she'd cooled her horse down and put her tack away, she'd disappeared into the bunkhouse. Last night, she'd had Lane ask Martina to fix a plate he could bring down to the bunkhouse for her. Her excuse was she wanted to spend more time studying the maps and going over some reports.

Avoiding Mason was more like it.

It was painfully obvious to her their sexual chemistry was so strong that just being with him zinged her brain waves. Having him fly in the copilot's seat with her had been a big mistake, but she was torn between keeping miles of distance between them and treating him as she would any other client.

Why hadn't she been smart and called Grey when she'd discovered who they were working for. She could have asked for reassignment?

Because you don't

As the chopper lifted smoothly into the air, Mason again admired the efficiency and cool poise with which Kris handled the bird. She was all business, focused on managing the flight and controlling the sleek machine. He loved to watch the smooth play of muscles in her arms as she worked the controls and the deftness of her touch. Her face was impossible to read, shielded as it was by her aviator shades and the bill of her ball cap. But nothing in the movements of her body or her posture betrayed the slightest degree of tension. It seemed, once she sat in the pilot's seat, she blocked everything else from her mind. A skill he was sure she'd learned before being accepted as a Nightstalker.Below him, he could see Ray and Ted cantering across one of the fenced pasture sections. He was pleased to note that a wrangler had directed them around the areas with cattle to those acres that were empty. Soon, they were beyond the arable land and into the wild of the landscape, where they slowed t

Kris was ready to scream. It seemed, every time she turned around, Mason was right there. Next to her. Near her. Asking her if she needed anything. She half expected him to sit and watch her while she slept in the bunkhouse, but he'd had enough sense not to do that.Still, since yesterday, while they'd planned and rested and waited, he had been a constant presence. She wondered if her team would start asking questions. No, he was the client. And former military. They'd expect him to be involved. And be everywhere they were. The night had passed without incident. The feedback from a couple of the sensors was, again, caused by some of the abundant wildlife wandering in that sector. The men returned to the ranch, ate breakfast, and rolled into their bunks. Even Mason had headed up to the house to catch a few hours of shut-eye. Tonight, they'd all be at it again. She finally crawled up into her own bunk and dropped into a dead sleep. The touch of a hand on her shoulder woke her. Reflex

They were all deployed tonight, every one of them. Mason had convinced Kris to include him, using his time in the military as a bonus, and she had grudgingly agreed. The air between them was tense, more so than it had been since the moment she'd set foot on his ranch. The vibes they gave off had to do with a lot more than sexual hunger, but he damn sure didn't want to dig into what it was.Not tonight, for sure, when they all needed to block out everything except what was about to happen.Kris flew everyone on the team—all six members—out to the last of the cleared pastures at dusk and parked the chopper behind a large copse of trees. While Lane waited in the chopper with the monitoring program on his computer, the rest dropped to the ground and took cover in the dense copse, waiting for word to move. Each of them was armed, and each had night vision goggles. He was stunned to see Kris take up a position with them, a rifle cradled in her arms. When he opened his mouth to say somethi

Part Three: Lethal DesignShannon McRae looked over her shoulder as she made her way through the parking lot at Maddux Video Designs. Well past eight o'clock, darkness already shrouded the night. She wished Maddux didn't insist its employees park in the back lot, away from the lights and traffic on the busy street where they were located. It increased the feeling of vulnerability, one she'd dealt with a lot of late. She hadn't meant to work so late, but she continued to be confounded by something in her latest project, and her stubbornness kept her from giving up. Finally, though, battling a headache and a stiff back, she shut down her computer, setting the security on it until the next day.Under normal circumstances working late didn't bother her. She sometimes even worked until midnight. She'd been doing a lot of that with this project for Infinity because it had her baffled. On the face of it, this latest assignment looked simple enough. You think there's a bomb? Idiot! Now you're really losing it.Whoever was doing this didn't want to kill her. They could have done it already. Shannon had the sense he—or she—just wanted to knock her off balance. Affect her work. Discredit her and get her fired. But why? A question she couldn't seem to find an answer to. She had nothing in her life of any interest—sad to say—except this particular game that had her mind twisted in knots. Why on earth would anyone be interested in a game for executive team-building exercises?Sighing, she cranked the ignition, backed out of her space, and pulled out of the parking lot. Maddux Video Games, a two-story structure of glass and steel, perched on Dale Mabry, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Tampa. For Shannon, it was a straight shot down Dale Mabry to the South Tampa neighborhood where she lived. Even at almost nine o'clock at night, with a significant amount of traffic, it wouldn't take her long to get home. She kept checking her rearv

"I didn't expect to see you for a while yet. I thought you were all wrapped up in some big project."Athena stirred sweetener into her coffee and blew on its steaming surface, studying her friend over the rim of the cup. Under normal circumstances, even for a casual meeting like this, she knew Shannon made sure she was pulled together, neat jeans and a tailored blouse, thick blonde hair in its French twist, makeup in place. A habit she never seemed to break. Except today, when she had just thrown on an oversized T-shirt and jean shorts, hiding the curves so many women envied. No makeup. Hair scraped back in a utilitarian ponytail. Worry lines bracketed her eyes and mouth and deep shadows sat beneath her hazel eyes. All of this created a high degree of concern in Athena. She'd never seen her friend this scattered, a definite sign something was wrong here.Shannon took a careful sip of her latte. "I am. I'm on a deadline, and you know how I get."Athena hadn't seen Shannon for a few w

Athena and Grey hadn't spent a lot of money setting up The Omega Team offices. She'd contributed part of her retirement fund she'd cashed out at the police department, but the bulk of it had come from him, a nest egg left to him by his best friend killed in Afghanistan. They lived in the little two-bedroom house in West Tampa that had been Lucky's, comfortable and low maintenance. For the agency, though, they'd purchased an old warehouse in a commercial district. They'd walled off half of it for offices. The other held their sophisticated electronics and communications center. She'd told Grey when they had it set up she thought he might be able to run the entire country from there."Not so funny," he'd said, one corner of his mouth kicking up in a grin.Setting up their relationship had been a little trickier. The sex had been there from the very beginning, but they had both been in the business long enough to know if you didn't handle things right, the sex could be the kiss of death

"I have just the agent for you," Grey assured Shannon. "He won't even look at you as a woman. I promise.""No?" Shannon had a brief flash of manic hysteria. Not look at her as a woman? "Is there something wrong with him?""Not at all. He's just the consummate professional. Polite, alert, ready for anything."Athena nodded. "He served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. If I tell you it burned out much of his soul, I know you'll understand. He's been through some very tough times, a lot of which he continues to deal with, and he's still isolating himself from people on a social level. We have no idea how dangerous this person we're dealing with here is. Or persons, for that matter. If I were in your situation, Owen Cormier is the one I would want watching my back. Also my front and every area around me."Shannon felt a stab of sympathy for the man she hadn't even met yet. She had to wonder if he was anything like—Stow it. He's gone and you'll never see him again. Time to move alo

Shannon rubbed her forehead. It seemed she was the only one who thought she and Owen had something together. Had she misread the silent signals? No! I didn't! If I just had the chance to—Stop it. Too many tears over spilled milk.Swallowing a sigh, she leaned her head back against the chaise and closed her eyes. Bad idea.At once an image of a naked Owen swam into her mind, the hard muscles of his body defined in a half-light, his thick cock pointing straight at her, his eyes filled with hunger. Silently he held out a hand to her, reaching for her."I want you." His voice sounded deep and guttural."I want you, too. Why did you leave me?""We'll talk later. Right now I just want to taste every bit of you and sink into your body.""All right." She put her hand in his, but as soon as she touched him, he began to fade and disappear."No," she cried. "Don't leave. Please come back.""I'm here, Shannon.""No." She wanted to cry as she tried to grab for him again. "No, you're n

"But where on earth did he go?"Shannon sat on the couch in her living room, feet pulled up, hugging her knees. At the end of the terrifying day that still gave her nightmares, Owen had brought her home. He had stayed with her every minute. When they gave their statements to the police, he'd been by her side, holding her hand. When the cops interviewed her about the entire situation, Owen stuck by her side. With his help, she managed to avoid reporters. He'd fed her and held her and soothed her when she kept reliving the nightmare moment. And then he'd just packed his go-bag and told her he had to leave. She still visualized the pain on his face when he walked out. She hadn't imagined the connection between them.If it hurt so much for him to walk away, why did he think he had to leave? She'd been so sure they could take the opportunity to explore something real between them."Owen is a very complex person," Athena told her. "He's had a hard life, faced a lot of scary stuff during

Shannon shook her head. "We never get much information. Just the profile of the people who will be playing the game and the goals the client wants to accomplish.""The client is a very high-profile hedge fund. They have a lot of money—billions—passing through their hands, so the CEO wanted to make sure he had a staff that worked well together to handle it all.""And?" She made a "come on" gesture with her fingers."Jay Novak has been trying to plant a bug in your game to then allow him to access the hedge fund accounts once they loaded the game onto their computers."She stared at him. "Are you serious?""As a heart attack.""So his big plan was to get into the hedge fund files and steal money?" Her head was spinning."You got it. Jacquie said the bug he tried to plant would have sucked money out and left no trace. It would manipulate the accounts so it didn't affect the balance. Nobody would know unless they tried to move funds in a legitimate transaction.""But—" She stopped

Owen questioned the security guard at length before they left the building. Shannon checked the log to see who had signed in that day, swearing under her breath when she saw all three of the people she and Owen discussed had been in and out."But not all together," she pointed out."Maybe by design," he answered. He took a snapshot with his phone of the page with their log times on it before herding her out of there."I'm going to make a quick stop to pick up some food," he told her. "I think we'll pass on the ribs right now and get something easy to handle. I know you want to get started on this as soon as you can, but you also need to eat.""God." She leaned back against the seat, rubbing her face with her palms. "I can't believe this is happening. This is just too outrageous for simple jealousy.""Don't discount it, though," he warned. "Jealous people do terrible things."At home, she copied the file from her hard drive onto to a thumb drive then wiped it completely from her l

He studied her face for a long moment, trying to read her. She'd said she had no jilted boyfriends—did people even use that word now?—but Grey had uncovered a contradiction. Maybe their definition of the word differed from hers."Tell me about Peter Maguire," he said at last."Oh, for god's sake." She took a heavy swallow of the wine. "That little weenie?"Owen couldn't help laughing. "Doesn't make him sound too attractive.""He's not." She twisted her lips in a grimace. "I think nothing short of desperation would make a woman accept a date with him.""According to what Grey learned, he's been telling his friends you gave him a raw deal. Wrote him off. He intends to show you who has the upper hand.""More like a limp wrist." She snorted. "Or maybe a limp dick." A sudden blush suffused her cheeks. "I'm sorry, I—""Hey!" Owen held up a hand. "Works fine for me.""And just how did Grey find all this out in such a short period of time?"Owen shrugged. "He has his sources. I never

Owen looked around, taking in every detail of the place Shannon had chosen."You picked a winner here, Shannon. No doubt about it. No false advertising here."La Zamira was just as she'd promised. The medium-sized restaurant had a full house, the air redolent with the scents of spices used in the excellent Cuban cooking. The tostadas—Cuban bread buttered and toasted on a grill—along with the scrambled eggs and seasoned sausage had just hit the spot. Now, he enjoyed his second cup of café con leche—coffee with warm milk—and thought he hadn't felt so at peace in more than fifteen years.Sad, Cormier. Very sad.But he'd chosen this life. Or maybe it had chosen him. Shannon McRae was an anomaly. The one night they'd spent together two years before had been burned into his brain. But last night surpassed even the memory. He didn't want to admit the reason might be because now he had a name to go with the face and body and information to form a picture of the woman herself. He'd long a

Shannon was a habitual early riser. During the week, she liked to get in a half hour of yoga before getting ready for work. It helped her deal with the physical stress of sitting in front of a computer all day and the mental stress of the complicated projects she worked on. Saturday and Sunday she slept in a little but not much. She liked her cup of coffee on her patio in the morning, sometimes even rising early enough to catch the end of sunrise. But this morning, when she opened her eyes, everything had seemed different. For one thing, her body felt pleasantly sore in a lot of interesting places. For another, the heady scent of male clung to her bedclothes and her body. And for a third, sunlight poured in through the blinds she'd forgotten to close last night.Oh, wait! She wasn't even in her room. She was…in Owen's room. She curved her lips in a smile of immense satisfaction. Last night had been not just every bit as outstanding as the first one they'd spent together but even bet

Even as limp and lax as she felt, desire still coursed through her. They were far from done. When he stretched out next to her, she took a moment to once more drink in the magnificence of his body. His head might be screwed up, but he was an incredible male specimen. She knelt beside him and, as he'd done to her, bent down to capture one of his hard, flat male nipples in her mouth. She heard the hiss of intake of his breath as she closed her teeth over the beaded point and bit lightly then dragged her teeth along the surface. She slid her hand down the flat planes of his abdomen in a lingering caress, tangling her fingers in the nest of public curls until she reached his heavy swollen shaft. When she closed her fingers around him and gave a gentle squeeze, a low moan rumbled from his throat. She squeezed harder and coasted her fingers up and down even as she nibbled again on his nipple."Jesus, Shannon," he hissed. "Take it easy or I'll never get to the main event."She swallowed a

The moment they were in the room, Owen thrust his fingers into her hair and cradled her head in his big palms."I swore to myself ten times over I had no business doing this." Strain made his voice gruff and tight. "But fuck, Shannon. Somehow you're in my blood. This is either gonna kill us or cure us."Cure. She clutched at his upper arms to anchor herself. Please let it be the cure. His mouth came down on hers in a kiss far gentler than she anticipated. His lips were warm and unexpectedly soft, pressing with a light touch against hers, the contact stealing her breath. He held the kiss for the beat of several seconds. Then, with the tip of his tongue, he traced the closed seam of her mouth, sending shivers through her body."Open for me," he murmured against her lips. When she did, his tongue swept in like an arc of flame, scorching every place it touched her. He tasted of mint toothpaste and pure masculine male, a heady combination. She moved her own tongue against it, engaging
