The morning sun rushes through the window, putting a gentle golden light over the room, but the warmth does little to break the chilly tension between Callum and me. He’s sitting at the edge of the bed, his shoulders slumped forward, his back turned to me. I can sense the divide between us more than ever.

It’s been like this since Greta’s assertions, since the council meeting that left everything hanging in the air—unspoken, unanswered. I want to reach out to him, to tell him everything that’s churning in my head, but the words clog in my throat. How can I persuade him of the truth when even I’m not sure what’s happening anymore?

“Callum…” I began, my voice barely above a whisper. He doesn’t turn around. He doesn’t even move.

His stillness stings deeper than any words ever could. I swallow hard, trying to force down the knot of irritation that’s building in my chest. “We need to talk.”

Finally, he rises, but his actions are sluggish, almost robotic. When he turns to face me, his e
