"Joan is the Hargreaves heir?" Jackson asked absentmindedly, it was quite a shock for him, he wondered why Francesca never told him about that.
"You know Joan?" Asher asked Jackson, the revelation had made both men forget about the other.
"I only met her for a brief moment, but yes I do,"
"when, where, and how did you meet her?" Asher asked Jackson in a frenzy.
Jackson eyed Asher, it was just a few moments ago, but Asher seem different from the man he was talking with before his phone buzzed.
It was a long time ago he's seen the fire Asher had in his eyes right now, not since Emily.
"I met her at Francesca's apartment, on Friday night, it seems you know her too, how do you know her?" Jackson was curious why Asher got fired up at his mention of Joan.
Asher had to take a long breath to calm himself before he said anything, he didn't know why he got so worked up.
Jackson's answer interested him, Joan Hargreaves heir to the Hargreaves family wealth, in Francesca's home at night.
He ponder what her relation to Jackson's matchmaker was and how that would affect his plans. He cares not about Jackson's late night rendezvous with Francesca as long as it doesn't cause any setbacks
"She was my date Friday night," Asher said crisply, now that he thought about it, Joan never told him her family name on the date, now he knows why.
"She's the date?" Jackson couldn't understand the reason Francesca would match her niece with Asher, she was surely hiding something from him.
"I need to have a talk with Francesca about this."
"What does any of this have to do with your matchmaker? Joan and I can resolve this between ourselves."
"Well, she's her aunt, what do you even mean by resolving it between yourselves, I thought you said she was a horrible date."
"She's not horrible anymore, she is just perfect, and I mean it when I said we'll resolve it together, after all, we're going to be married."
Jackson wasn't even surprised by what Asher said, they've been friends for a decade, and he knew Asher well, he expected at least this level of crazy from the man.
A cold, calculating prick, he knows Asher wouldn't joke about marriage to Joan, especially if she is a Hargreaves, she fits everything Asher wants and more.
"You are going to use her to get Hargreaves aren't you?"
"I won't be using her, but yes, I will have Hargreaves Corporation by marrying her, we'll be great together, I can see it."
"That's not possible man, I told you her aunt is important to me, I can't risk losing Francesca, I have to tell her."
"You can't, if you do we lose everything, think about it we get Hargreaves and we won't need to spend that much."
"I know but-"
"There are no buts man, I mean you speak as if I would hurt her, she fits everything, Jax, she's beautiful, her family is perfect and she's our key to Hargreaves!" Asher exclaims, sits back on his stool, and took a sip of his mojito, he'd completely forgotten about the drink.
"She's everything, Jax, with her I'll have the perfect family, and we will all be richer for it,".
"I don't know man, but I'll think about it."
Jackson was conflicted, if things goes awry he could end up losing more than Hargreaves, he could lose Francesca.
****
It was the end of the week and Joan was exhausted, she's spent a large part of her time all week meeting with people, friends of her father, old friends to help with the situation of Hargreaves Corporation.
They all gave her a negative response as she asked them -begged them really- to help her save her family's business. They all said the same things, Hargreaves Corporation is deep in debts, and there are rumors of a sell-off.
Consultation with her father's lawyer had not yielded any solutions except if she was willing to sell her shares to create funds for the company. But there are fears it would instigate the other shareholders into a rapid sell-off.
She also had to attend an extraordinary general meeting at the company, during the new week, it would be her introduction as the largest shareholder in Hargreaves, and she wasn't looking forward to it.
Joan felt battered and confused, and as if she didn't have enough problems she got a call from Asher Evans inviting her to another date with the excuse he had something important to tell her after she waited the whole week for his call.
She'd refused his offer at first but after persistent phone calls from him, she asked him to meet her at a cafe she frequents, to at least listen to whatever he had to say.
So here she was at a table in Altch cafe, a good coffee shop in the city, the cafe is naturally lit with the daylight from large glass windows that allows you to peer at the outside world.
Her favorite part of Altch cafe however was the couch they put around the corners, where on her sad days she would just lay on, sip good coffee and get away from the world.
Joan didn't have to wait long for Asher, she saw him stride into the cafe, a few minutes after she got her order of caffè mocha.
He looked as gorgeous as she remembered, the white shirt and blue jeans he wore fitting his tall frame perfectly, he looked good even in casuals
"It seems I'm the late one now," Asher said and took the seat across from her
"Don't worry about it, I haven't been waiting long. Would you like to order some coffee?" Joan inquired trying to be polite.
"Oh no I'm okay," Joan watched as Asher took a look around the cafe, analyzing his environment. "Do you come here often?"
"Yes I do, I like the ambience of the place. You said you had something to say, and I don't have a lot of time"
"Yea, but I don't wanna rush into it, so I was thinking, how about I tell you over dinner."
"I don't know, the last time we had dinner it was terrible, and afterward I invited you to a coffee date, but you never called."
"We can just forget about all of that, start afresh?" Asher said flashing Joan a smile. Like everything about Asher, this smile was well-practiced and served the purpose of seducing even the most hard-hearted woman.
But the smile just made Joan angry, she waited a week for his call and now he wants to start afresh, she saw through the facade that was Asher Evans. If anything Francesca told her about Asher was true, she saw the point of his notoriety.
His smile, his eyes, everything about his body was all dubiously great, and he's rich, everything about him would seduce a woman, but at that moment not her. Maybe it was her exhaustion, or the fact she waited a week for his call, or both, she found herself immune to his charms.
"It's not possible, we can't just start afresh, this is not a game you know," Joan groused and took a big gulp from her coffee to calm herself.
"Let's get married then," Asher said calmly, his smile still on his face.
Asher's words caught her completely by surprise that Joan almost choked on her coffee, she was coughing up a fit by the time she got the caffè mocha down her throat.
"What the hell is wrong with you, I'm not one of your toys."
"Of course you're not a toy, and this is me being serious, I am trying to tell you that this is not a game for me."
Joan was befuddled, she had no idea what Asher was planning, but she won't fall into his trap.
"You know what I don't care, if you're being serious or not, I don't want you to call me again, I have a lot on my plate, I have no time for this," Joan said and stomps off in anger. Asher became to her an unsettled man she needs to avoid by all means.
"Ok that didn't go well, I have to be more proactive," and he knew just how to do it, there is to be a Hargreaves Corporation extraordinary general meeting soon. Jackson has always represented their stake in Hargreaves but it wouldn't hurt if he took more interest now.
****
Asher knew he was going over and beyond with Joan, he also knew the end profit of his efforts would be massive, and that was all that mattered to a businessman like him.
He didn't remember the last time he'd done what he was now attempting, socializing with people he could just avoid.
It's not because he couldn't socialize, he could when he wanted to, after all, he'd taught himself all the social nuance needed to aid his business, it was just that most times he doesn't find the need to.
What to say, what not to say, how to smile, and the different types of smiles, things normal people grasped easily, were things he had to teach himself as he got older.
He had not gone to an extraordinary general meeting for any of his past female conquests, but none of them was a Hargreaves.
"I heard from Mr. Brown you would personally be attending this meeting, it's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Evans" rambled Isaac Long a portly middle-aged man who is a director at Hargreaves Corporation, one of the few Asher and Jackson had in their pocket.
Isaac led him inside the conference hall for the meeting. Although the portly director tried so hard to amuse Asher, he was on the lookout for Joan.
When he found her, she was at the fore of the room, while he sat at the back, away from her roving eyes. He noticed how uncomfortable she was, surrounded by greedy shareholders prodding at her, questioning her, trying to protect their interest.
It was a good situation for Asher, he'd hoped something like this would happen, since only then can he swoop in to save the damsel in distress, tonight he would be the dark knight.
As the meeting progressed Asher found the whole affair boring, he appreciates a good productive meeting, but all he saw was management and board with nothing but excuses. They had no practical means of turning the company's fortune around, they looked out of their depths.
He was pleased when the meeting ended, and as people start exiting the room, he noticed Joan being aggressively pulled aside by Mabel and Jacob Hargreaves.
Jacob is Hargreaves Corporation CEO and he chairs the board too, while Mabel serves as a director on the board, and they are both members of Joan's family, ultimately they are the two he has to take Hargreaves from.
Asher watched them as they got more hostile with Joan, when their argument started to attract other people inside the hall, he figured it was time to make his appearance.
"Joan darling, there you are, you kept me waiting quite a while, shall we go now?" Asher said pulling Joan towards him, he put his hands on the small of her back, and turned to lead her out of the hall.
"A... Asher?" Joan was surprised to see Asher, she wondered what he was doing at Hargreaves Corporation, she feared he was stalking her.
Asher smiled down at Joan, he knew he had her where he wanted, and there would be no escape for her
"Hey who are you? you can't just barge in here and drag her away," Jacob barked at Asher.
"I'm sorry, allow me to introduce myself," Asher turned back towards the Hargreaves pair of Mabel and Jacob, "I'm Asher Evans and I'm also Joan's fiance, right darling?"
"I'm sorry, allow me to introduce myself, I'm Asher Evans and I'm also Joan's fiance, right darling?" Asher had purposely made his last words a question, he turned to look towards Joan, she was staring at him, her eyes as big as saucers. He's putting everything in Joan's hands now, she had a decision to make, would she hold his hands or not, he simply enjoys her stiff facial expression as the wheels behind her eyes moved.Joan realized Asher was playing games with her, but she didn't have the luxury to question him. Although she would appreciate anything that would save her from the claws of her family at that moment, she just couldn't trust Asher.God, she'd expected the emergency general meeting to be hard on her, she had no idea it would be this bad.As soon as she entered the conference hall, she was surrounded by scared shareholders asking about her family's plan for the company. 'Would there be a sell-off or a takeover' was the question on everyone's lips? After a pointless me
"I wonder what your choice would be if there was a way to save Hargreaves Corporation and all you had to do to ensure it was to marry me. What if all you had to do to save your father's legacy was a contract marriage with me." Asher dangles the bait in front of Joan, all that's left is for her to bite.Joan was disgusted, she'd played right into his hands, and here she was babbling about her life, and all the while he had an ulterior motive. How messed up does Asher have to be to throw the word marriage around, Francesca wasn't wrong about him after all. "This is not a joke or a game to me, I'm serious," Asher said remembering her words at the cafe, "I believe if you agree to my terms, we both stand a lot to gain." "The marriage offer at the cafe was not a joke?" Joan wondered how brazen Asher could be. "It wasn't, I was serious then, and I am now." Joan was skeptical, however, she couldn't deny her need for help, "tell me, how does getting married to you save Hargreaves? I've h
Asher was excited, it's been so long that he felt so sprightly about anything. Earlier that day he and Joan had both written out their terms, and he printed them. He put in a penalty fee for Joan reneging on the conditions of their contract. He purposely set the fee to be above the valuation of Joan's shares in her family's company. While reviewing the contract Joan found issues with some of his terms. She had problems with his use of words of endearment, and the number of dates he wanted. He'd strongly assert that those were his terms for the contract and they were necessary. But she vehemently refused to live with him when he brought it up, so he had to erase it from the contract. According to her, she will not live with a man she hardly knew. Asher decided to not force her to live with him, he wanted it to be something she would do willingly. On his part, he found no problems with her terms, except the part where she states she wants to be involved in all his dealing with her
"Where are we going?" Joan asked Asher, they were on one of his important dates. They had just finished lunch at a seafood restaurant. The occasional dates were a bother to Joan. Their engagement is one based entirely on self-interest, but she found it an inconvenience spending her time with Asher. All she feels when she's with him is a grating feeling, an irritation she couldn't explain."We are almost there you'll see," Asher said as he eased them into the heavy traffic of the fifth avenue. The fifth avenue for all its luxury was a part of New York he avoids, its traffic alone tends to be dispiriting. When he comes to this part of the city, he ensures it is worth his time, his visit this time surely will be."What are we doing here?" Joan asked Asher, they were in front of Sherberg's, a department store, close to central park."For all intents and purpose you are my fiancee, my future wife, you have to look like it. We're getting you new dresses, come on," Asher noticed that Joan'
Neil Murphy, it just had to be him. He'd suspected someone was sabotaging his business with Henry, however considering his many enemies, he never imagined it was Neil. It was late, Asher and Joan had left the party and are now on their way to Francesca's apartment to drop off Joan. After Neil's appearance, he lost his chance to convince Henry. It seems he would have to move on from Aldrax. Asher almost laughed out loud at the foolery of it, puny Neil messing with him, what a twist. Neil was the founder of a tech company Asher financed early in his career. They had a falling out, and Asher having the most shares took the company from him. Asher later sold the company and reaped a substantial amount of profit. Neil hated him for it. He'd disappeared vowing to get back at Asher. Now he is Henry Dumas' close friend, exacting his vengeance on Asher by destroying the Aldrax takeover. "Asher are you alright?" Joan asked Asher, who had a grimace fixed on his face. "Hmm, what did you say
Francesca moaned as she and Jackson shared an exhilarating kiss. They'd just had sex and are now leisurely taking kisses of each other.Jackson had his right arm around her, as she laid her upper body on him, both enjoying their post-coital glowHer niece had gone to an opening party with that scoundrel Asher the previous day. And she has another invitation to a private party for a new friend she'd made. It pleased her that Joan was out having fun, she just wished it wasn't with Asher. She wondered what she was thinking matching them together. She'd practically forced Joan to go on a date with Asher. Even if it was to protect her family legacy she loathes the moment she suggested a marriage of convenience to Joan.Francesca did not want to stay at home bored all weekend, so she decided to visit her boyfriend.Jackson lived quite close to her in NoHo, it was how they met. Jackson had seen her matchmaker's advertisement, and had booked a session with her for Asher, he recognized her fr
Joan was angry, furious even, however she was furious with no one but herself. She couldn't decide which angered her more. When she got scared as Asher lashed out at her. Or starting a fight with him in the first place. And for what? a sense of good or justice for someone that might be just as shoddy as Asher or for the dead lady she heard them talking about? people she didn't even know. Asher, she knew a little, he didn't seem like someone who'd care about the consequences of his nefarious activities. All he cares about is profit. After she hurriedly left Kathy's party, she'd taken the time to reflect and think things through. She realized how much she'd risk her contract with Asher. Although she was somewhat assured he wouldn't just cancel their contract. There was no way she could know for sure, she has called Asher's phone multiple times, but he didn't pick up. She would probably have to seek him out to have any chance of salvaging what's left of their contract marriage. "
Neil thought he'd done his best to tail Joan, following her from her apartment complex to Asher's company. He'd then followed her and Asher as discreetly as he thought he could. Yet he was now staring at Asher like a deer caught in a headlight. "Asher?" Neil squeaked out in a panic as he turned towards Asher. "What are you doing here?" he asked Asher clumsily, he hoped Asher doesn't suspect he followed him and Joan. "I could ask you the same question, if I remember correctly I asked you to leave. Yet here you are fooling around the city." Neil breathe a sigh of relief, he feared he'd been caught by Asher. "Of course, I am leaving. I just have a few businesses to take care of before I leave," Neil lied. He couldn't risk being found out by Asher. "I'm done with my business here. I better get going," Neil needed to leave as soon as possible, he would approach Joan later. "I came here with my fiancee," Asher said stopping Neil as he turned to leave. "This business you have here, doe
Asher walked the stairs to the second floor one step at a time. He had Joan wrapped around him, her arm around his neck, her legs wrapped tightly around his torso. And his hands on her buns. Their passion for each other communicated in their kiss.Asher addled with lust was careful as he dragged both of them to the top of the stairs landing on the second floor. They both of them disconnected from their kiss to take in breath before they had their lips mashed together again. Their tongues exploring each other. It was a struggle for Asher but he managed to carry them into his bedroom, navigating them to the bed. He set Joan down gently on the bed, stopping their kiss.A look into each others eyes conveyed their feelings. A frenzy of sensual passion burned in their heart and they would take their pleasure. They had not the patience to take things slow and with nothing but a moment, they were naked. Asher stared at Joan's sensual body. Her full breast, round buns and tapered waist all cal
"You're wrong," Asher said leaning over toward his uncle. "Don't be delusional, Nolan. Nothing is going according to your plan, you're in my trap now. This is my game, I rule and control how it is going to be played and you are nothing but a pawn in it.""Pawn, did you called me your pawn?" Nolan asked almost shouting. Asher's words and demeanor has earned him his uncle's ire. Nolan contemplated if he should just abandon any negotiation with Asher and have his fun with Joan instead."Yes I did. You've been playing my game all night and you didn't even know," Asher bluffed, everything he's done since he received Jackson's message was bluff. A bluff he was using to fool his uncle. The fact is he is scared. He was so close to losing Joan tonight. And he wasn't even sure if she was safe yet. Jackson had only sent him a message, informing him they were ready to breach the warehouse where Joan was held. It was not like she has been rescued yet"That's it," Nolan said and stood up. "Perhaps
Jackson walked briskly but silently behind a unit of the rescue team as they approached the side entrance of the abandoned warehouse. The rescue team had done a surveillance of the warehouse to ascertain Joan's location inside the building. Jackson and the team concluded that Joan would most likely be confined in a section of the warehouse, used as offices.Since Joan's rescue was paramount they'd decided to approach the building with as much stealth and speed as was possible while not getting found out.The warehouse had two points of entry, both through concrete paths to the side and front of the building. They broke the team off into two units with the first unit attacking from the front while the other charged from the side. Since the section Joan was held at was closer to the side entrance. It was decided that the second unit assaulting the building from the side would attempt her rescue. Both teams were to attack while concealing themselves from Nolan's goons. The first unit wou
"I've got you now, little bird, and there would be no escape," Cassidy said to Joan as she became drowsy. Slumping against the man sedating her. Cassidy had a triumphant smirk on her face as Joan slipped into a temporary coma. Joan's kidnapping was a success. She'd spent the last month fine-tuning her strategy, she was glad everything had gone without a hitch. Before Joan's abduction Cassidy and the men with her had taken care of both teams protecting Joan. That was the challenging part of her little plot, however, they had an advantage in surprise and numbers. Now the two teams of four guards are having a blissful sleep. "Bring the cars around, we need to get going," Cassidy said to one of the two men working for her. The other man had Joan drooping in his arms. "I have a message for you from Mr. Evans," One of the goons working for Nolan that he sent to provide support said. "A message? What message?" Cassidy inquired of the man. "He said this is the end of the line for your pa
Joan and Asher intertwined their hands, as they walked through Central Park. They were on an evening date and are strolling through the park before Asher drove Joan back home. Asher had his eyes on Joan who was smiling brightly. Central Park without a doubt was her favorite place, not only because she could reminisce about the good times she shared with her mom. But also because it was the one place she could exist without worry. It has become even more special now that she shared it with Asher.Joan felt a bittersweet sensation as she thought about all that has happened the past few days. She was glad to finally get her family's company from Mabel's clutches. As well as getting her revenge for Mabel ruining her family and manipulating her with her father's death. While she felt that Mabel deserved what came her way, still she felt unease. And it grew with Mabel's fretting dialogue with her as she was dragged out of the emergency meeting. She never pictured Mabel being that scared of
Mabel huffed and puffed before the door of the conference hall where the emergency meeting would hold. Her stepdaughter was the reason for her grief. The bothersome brat was running late and the meeting would soon commence. She had put all her eggs in one basket and that basket was Joan. Mabel would suffer through more minutes of irritation before Joan appeared, alone without Asher as she'd asked. Mabel had also instructed Joan not to tell Asher about her plans for the meeting. She didn't want him ruining her work. "I'm so sorry for my tardiness Mabel, I lost track of the time while getting ready," Joan recited her fake apology as she neared her stepmother. She had intentionally arrived late, in a bid to both piss off and scare Mabel. "Hello Joan darling, you came at just the right moment. Come, walk with me," Mabel muttered barely suppressing her gall. Joan smiled, she could see the fruit of her work by the crease on her stepmother's forehead and her visibly troubled face. Seeing
It was a chilly evening, the sun had set a few hours ago and it was getting late into the night. The cold of the night was starting to get to her, she knew she should have brought a jacket. The full-sleeved t-shirt she wore was proving to be useless against the biting cold.Joan sat in front of the pastry shop near her aunt's apartment, where she was waiting for the bane of her existence, her stepmother. The pastry shop was the site of her fiasco with Cassidy Myers, just weeks ago. Joan chuckled at the absurdity of the altercation-if she could call it that-but she was happy at how things turned out. Especially with Asher. She found that thoughts of him were always enough to warm her heart."You must be happy to see me. That's a hell of a smile right there." Mabel said to her stepdaughter with a fake smile of her own, just as she took the other seat at Joan's table. She wondered what the broad smile on Joan's face was for."Do not flatter yourself," Joan rebuked her stepmother, she was
Jacob stared at the multi-floor home before him with some apathy. The night was still in its youth, the sun had set not too long ago. It was evident that Jacob was weary as he stood before the brownstone townhouse a frown creasing on his features. Visiting a townhouse in the West Village, alone, was not part of his schedule when he rose from bed that morning. Needless to say, the townhouse before him is an annoyance, it was not a place he wanted to be, nor did he have any business there. However he had no choice but to come, it was the location his blackmailers gave him. His unknown blackmailers had sent him details about his and Mabel's misappropriation of company funds that hit too close to be ignored. They had given him the location of the townhouse and he had come with the hope of striking a deal, probably to pay them off. As he steps closer to the house, Jacob thought it silly, who in their right mind would use a townhouse for such a base act as blackmail? On the other hand, he
Joan since Nolan's sudden visit to Asher's apartment finds herself constantly anxious. She acknowledged that trouble was coming for her. Nolan coming to Asher's apartment had marked that. Still, she had no idea what form the storm coming would take but she knew why it was coming. She has flown too close to Asher's sky. And just like with Emily, the sun that is Nolan probably wanted her burnt. She was anxious, yet, at the moment she felt confident and safe. She recognized that her confidence perhaps came from Asher who at present had his right hand intertwined in her left one. He was driving them to Maven, and he'd personally come to pick her up. She knew he was being protective of her, it was odd, but gestures like this made Asher more appealing to her.Asher's sideways glance was met with Joan's amber eyes focused on him. It seemed he'd caught his lover taking sneak peeks of him. This was made evident by the sudden turn of her head to the other side and the bright crimson on her chee
