The Plan:
Danica pulled Ariadne into her fathers office and carefully shut the door. She walked over to the window and closed the shutters. The room instantly got dark. The sunlight spelling in from the window cracks as Danica blindly makes her way to the desk. Feeling around she found a candle on the desk and lit it. The amber glow lit the room and Danica motioned for Ariadne to come over. Adriane raised her eyebrow at her.
“This seems a little over the top, what do you got going on Dani?” Ariadne asked as she walked slowly over to the desk.
“Ok but you need to be open minded.” Danica said to her, making a face at her.
“Ok ok, just tell me.” Ariadne said wanting to know what exactly was going on.
Danica frowned and then began pulling the book and journal out of her bag. She set them both down in front of Ariadne. Ariadne looked down at them and back to Danica confused. Her face asked Danica what was this? Danica sighed, rolling her eyes.
“This is dad’s old journal. Before he started the trace business with Ma.” Danica explains.
Ariadne waved her hand in a “get on with it” motion. Danica waved her hand back at her. As she pulled out the book.
“So this isn't an ordinary book. Look, see here.” Danica explained as she opened the secret compartment in the book.
Ariadne stepped forward looking at it. Dancia then pulled out an old style map. Ariadne looked at the paper. It was stained with age and creased over and over again. Ariadne didn't know how it was still intact. Danica unrolled the map and Ariadne immediately noticed her father’s hand writing. She saw his marking and followed the route with her eyes.
“The Hollow?” She asked, running her hands over her father’s handwriting.
Danica slammed open his journal and showed her the entry mentioning The Hollow. Adraine skimmed it and glanced back at her sister trying to piece together what Danica was trying to tell her.
“Treasure...it's a treasure map.” Danica said, spelling it out for her.
“And..”Ariadne said, her forehead creasing with confusion.
“Oh for love. Treasure map Ari as in money, as in gold. As in we need money.” Danica said, rolling her eyes at her sister.
“You want us to go treasure hunting.” Ariadne said, getting frustrated.
“Are you not here. Am I not speaking english?” Danica asked sarcastically.
“Or maybe I am talking to a child. Dani we cannot leave to go after some treasure that may or may not be real. While Mom’s and Dad’s hard work disappears.” Ari said, becoming angry.
“Ari, this might be the solution. It’s Dad’s handwriting, it's Dad’s map. His journal he thought it was real.” Danica said, trying to not get angry at Adriane.
“Dani, I'm not talking about this anymore.” Adriane said, starting to walk to the door.
“Fine, go cower to those bastards. Go strike a deal. Mom and Dad would be so proud.” Danica said in anger.
Ariadne froze in the doorway, her hands clenched by her side. She was starting to shake from being angry. She forced herself to walk through the door holding her tongue. She wasn't going to say anything to her sister she was going to regret. Danica instantly felt bad as she watched her sister leave. She put the map back into the binding of the book. Stuffing them back into her bag. She looked around the room before storming out too.
Ariadne had stormed up to her room, Danica knew by the way the door slammed as she made it out to the kitchen. Danica's aggravation growing she decided to leave. She stomped out the door and kept walking. She didn't know where she was going but her anger kept growing the more she replayed the conversation her and Ariadne just had. How could she not think it was a good idea? She was the only one that had an idea? Ariadne seemed like she just wanted to give in to the Smiths. Danica thought as she walked harder and faster. Her feet pounding on the pavement as she went along.
Before long she found herself down by the docks. The sea air was refreshing as she paused watching the men come and go from the ships. Her eyes wandered over the boats. The Crown was sitting proudly waiting for its next voyage. Her parents had taken The Morning Star and auntie Claire and uncle Jack had been gone for a little bit now with The Evening Star.
“I would need one of the ships that they wouldn't miss right away but that would be strong and had all the quirks of the others.” Danica said out loud looking over the other ships of the companies.
Most of them had started to become just trade ships, there were very few that acted a punch when they became mostly trading ships. Her father’s pride and joy was The Morning Star and the Crown fell second. She couldn't take The Crown Ariadne would notice right away. Her eyes scanned the ships more carefully.
“The North Star.” She whispered
She began walking to it ignoring everyone on the dock. She made her way up the walkway to it and began studying it. She walked about the ship mentally taking notes of things. The men on board moved out of her way as she did. Three masses, equipped with cannons, and it had all the little details her father liked. The ship was made from a darker wood, it had a hughe of rich brown in it but it also wanted to be grey. She walked up the stairway sliding her hand over the railing as she did. She smiled seeing the detail her father put into this ship. A blue turquoise line went up the side of the handle rail, looking about this turquoise color was etched into the ship. Across the rails out lining the cabin doors. As she reached the upper deck she made her way to the helm. Standing in front of the wheel, she stepped forward, taking the wheel in her hands. It felt like it was meant to be hers. The wheel had the same turquoise blue lines down each side of it. She smiled. She glanced up at the sails, they were gray in color but the very top sail, where the colors of the ship flew, was a dark grey sail and in the middle of it a turquoise color star. This was her ship, she felt it in her gut, felt it in her bones. It was meant to be hers.
“Can I help you with something Miss?” One of the crew members came up to her asking.“Aye, prepare the ship to be ready to sail. We're leaving tonight.” Danica said with authority.
The man looked at her a little confused but nodded and went to gather the crew. Another man approached her, he was older, his hair just starting to become salt and pepper. He smiled at her as he approached her. Danica could see the crow's feet at his eyes as he smiled.
“Dani! What brings you on the ship?” Adam asked as he approached.
“Adam! I almost didn't recognize you.” Danica laughed.
“I came to let the crew know we are leaving tonight...late.” Danica smiled brightly.
“Leaving? Late?” Adam asked, raising an eyebrow at her with a small smile on his lips.
“Aye.” Danica said with a nod.
“Dani, what’s going on? I’ve known you since you were a babe. I can tell when you're up to something.” Adam smirked.
“Oh fine but follow me. I don't need Ari finding out.” Danica said, shooting him a look as she made her way away from the helm.
Adam followed Danica across the lower deck and out to the docks. He paused looking at the ship as he waited to hear what was going on. He glanced back at Danica and motioned for her to start talking. She sighed and let a big breath out.
“So you probably know that Smith and Brother’s have been underhanding all of our contracts. We are losing money. We need a good sum of money for everything to work. The deadline is three weeks.” Danica said frustrated thinking about the whole situation.
Adam frowned slightly and motioned for her to ocnintune.
“I found one of my father’s old journals and a map. The map is marked for treasure at a place called The Hollow. If we can find this treasure and get back in time we can settle everything.” Danica explained.
“Dani, how do you even know if it is real?” Adam asked her, his tone not condescending but concerned.
“My father’s journal entries. It’s all there and the map isn't just marked. The voyage is charted.” Danica said to him trying to become upset with him.
“I just don't know lass.” Adam said quietly.
“You have your father’s journal?” Jacob asked quietly, coming up from behind the two as he walked by on the dock.
“Jacob. Aye that she does.” Adam smiled at Jacob as he nodded saying his name.
“I only heard a piece of it. What are you doing with the journal Dani?” Jacob asked.
“Jacob, you're one fo the few that have known my father the longest. Have you heard of the Hollow?” Danica asked him softly.
“How do you know about the Hollow?” Jacob asked her.
Adam raised an eyebrow at him and turned to studying him as Danica responded.
“So you do know it...I have the map.” Danica said quietly.
“You found his map?” Jacob asked, repeating her.
“So it’s true?” Adam asked Jacob.
“Aye, it's real. Gavin had one heck of a time with that map. The only good thing about it was that's how he met Morgan. It’s real all right but no one has tried to go after it.” Jacob said.
“I am.” Danica said with certainty.
Jacob studied her, he recognized that look. He had seen it before in Morgan and in Claire. Danica had their fire and there was no telling her no when she set her mind to something.
“Allright lass but I’m steering.” Jacob nodded.
“All right?” Adam repeated.
“We're leaving tonight. We can’t tell Ari. when it's dark we will meet here.” Danica said to both of them.
“Aye, I will find a few more men that can handle this type of voyage.” Jacob said to her.
“So it’s settled, we leave tonight.” Danica said to both of them.
Adam stood there confused but if this was what was happening he was being left behind. He watched Danica leave the dock, he shook his head softly and went to speak to Jacob. Jacob laughed and shook his head at him. He patted him on the back before heading off down the dock as well.
“Well I guess I'll make sure the ship is taken care of.” Adam muttered going to the ship.
Patrick happened to be walking by the docks when he overheard the whole conversation. He debated with himself what to do. He should go tell his father but everything his father was doing was wrong and he disagreed with it. He watched Danica walk back towards her home, her long raven hair moving back and forth as she did. She was something else he thought. He could go for a good adventure.
The North Star:Patrick wandered back home thinking about what he had overheard. He day dreamed as he walked. Dreaming about sneaking on board and going off. He couldn't, they already knew what he looked like. They need someone else. He thought walking into his home.“Well that's just wonderful Kalob. I am so glad you are home. Sound the alarm. My wayward son has returned.” Ed shouted sarcastically.“Ed, stop it dear. The neighbors will hear you. Darling Kaleb, why don't you take your stuff up to your old room and get settled. Dinner is at five.” Their mother said sweetly.“Anita he isn't staying here.” Ed said to his wife.“Now Ed. He might not live the life we wanted but he’s
Constellations:Danica stood at the helm and a yawn escaped her lips as she steered the ship. She watched the stars dance across the ocean current. She sighed happily. She was always fascinated with sailing and the ocean. She remembers trying to sneak on each ship her father would take to go on a trades deal. One time she even got out of the harbor with them. A small smile crept on her lips as she thought of the memory. How angry her father was that he had to turn around because six year old her had gotten past everyone. She remembered when she could finally go on her first voyage with him and the excitement she felt. Her smile grew thinking of the memory.Kaleb wandered up the stairs to the helm, most of the crew were asleep. He couldn't sleep. There were too many thoughts and what ifs running through his head. He stopped pausing on the upper dec
Gone: The sun rolled across Ariadne’s bed and she groaned slightly shifting trying to get away from it. She wasn't ready for another day. She didn't want to dive into the stress and the papers upon papers. She didn't want to have to think about the fact she was failing her parents. She groaned again, kicking the covers off of her. She thought it was too late. She had already begun. She could feel the tightness in her chest from her thoughts as her feet touched the wooden floor of her bedroom. She stretched before standing. Maybe she could just take some time off from her thoughts and work today, she missed Danica and how she always seemed to make everything feel lighter. They hadn't spent much time together recently. She walked to her bedroom door and stepped out into the hall. She glanced at her sister's door which was shut. She approached it and knocked softly.
Notes: Danica stretched, her eyes still shut as she let out a groan in the middle of her stretch. The stretch felt good as she opened her eyes and stood up. Shifting to the edge of the bed she dangled her feet over the edge of it placing them on the floor. Aloud yawned escaped her lips as she stretched once more. “Sleep well?” Jacob laughed as she was standing over at the desk reading the map. Danica laughed and stood walking over to Jacob. She stood next to him seeing what he was looking at. “How are we doing so far?” Danica said, looking down at the map with him. “Well we’ve started to take the long way around like you said to. The gulley would have saved a day and half time but we will try to make up for i
Return: Ariadne woke up, drool seeping out of her mouth as she sat up. She fell asleep face planted in contracts. Sitting up one of the contracts was stuck to her face. Ink smearing as she tried to remove it. She groaned as she looked around. The house seemed empty without anyone here. Her stomach grumbled letting her know she didn't remember the last time she actually had a meal. She stood going over to the bread box and pulling out some bread. She grabbed some jam spread on it and took a bite. She needed to write a letter to request an audience with the judge. She needs to find proof as well in order to present to them. She needed to go survey the ships as well. She couldn't wait for Orion to be home so he could attend to those things. She sighed, taking a second bite of her brown bread with raspberry ram. Her stomach curled inwards happily like it couldn't wait for the food to reach it. She finished the piece of bread and started for
Raven’s Peak: Ariadne masked her expression; she didn't know yet if she was going to tell her brother about her “friend” leaving her notes. Orion motioned to her asking with his eyes and hand what the note was about. Ariadne shook her head with a smile. “Nothing, just Robbie making sure we have everything.” Ariadne said quickly, making something up. “They are good people. I will go down there in the morning and thank them.” Orion said, taking a sip from his tea. Ariadne looked from the note to her brother and then crumpled into her hand. Andromeda the word echoing in her mind, what did it mean? Could it mean that the traitor was on andromeda? Could it mean there was something about the ship or the recent contracts it made? She sighed frustrated, the note fairy
Wounds: “Wake up! Wake up! Ari. What is this?” An angry Orion said, shaking his sister. Ariadne began hitting whatever was attacking her. She threw a fist as she sat up towards her attacker. Orion blocked and grabbed a hold of her fist. He then second guessed about waking her up like this. “Ari it's me! Stop!” Orion yelled. “What the hell are you doing?” Ari said, yanking her fist back. “I could ask you the same, what is this?” Ori said, holding another note in front of her face. Ari went to grab but Orion pulled back his face looking like their father right now when they would be intolerable. “Orion I don't know what it i
Buried at sea: Ariadne spent all day focusing on the isle contact; she couldn't find what she was missing. It was frustrating she knew it was there but it wasn't standing out to her, Orion was now overlooking it as well. He was becoming just as frustrated. Ariadne had come up with a list of men who were on the Ariadne’s Crown and Andromeda. So far she had five names. It wasn't uncommon for men to swap ships. Especially if they were in the business of making money. Many times men would hop off one ship and jump on the other with no breaks just to continue earning money. She rubbed her forehead as Orion came through the front door. “Any luck?” He asked her as he sat more papers down. “I have five names that were on both ships.” Ariadne said, sighing deeply. “Ok let me
Forever: The next several days were a blur. The Smith’s had buried Edward. Patrick had come by several times to see Ariadne. They were now official and very out in the open. They couldnt be in a room without touching one another. Patrick was now co-owner of the company with Kaleb being his partner. They had been discussing merging or being partners in the company. Danica sat by the dock, dunking the tips of her toes in the water reflecting on the first day Patrick came over. He and Ariadne were sitting closely at the kitchen table talking terms of agreement and partnership between the two companies when Danica walked down the stairs. Patrick smiled brightly at her. “Morning Danica.” Patrick said politely to her. Danica smiled back at him, her eyes searching to see if maybe he had com
Treasure Chest:Danica walked silently back to her house with Kaleb. He was clenching his jaw off and on. She didn't know if it was because of the pain in his arm or of everything that happened.“You know, I'm still so angry. He’s dead and I am numb to that but I'm angry. Every ounce of me wanted him to hurt for the years of pain he put us through. The constant beatings , the be the best or else attitude pounded into us, and hurting my mother. I took off as soon as i could and still feel so much guilt from it. I never knew if I did the right thing. My mother begged me to go. He had told her he would kill me the next time he was upset or one of us failed. I was always the least favorite. I don't know if I ever did the right thing leaving. Part of me wanted him to suffer more. To feel what it felt to live the way he made us all.” Kaleb said the
Rescue:Orion gathered what weapons he had in the home. He had several daggers stashed on him, his pistol and sword hung by his waist. Claire was determined to come with him. She walked back into the kitchen for the third time, Jack’s pistol hanging from her hip with her sword on the other side. Orion could tell she also had a dagger in her boot. He smiled a little bit. They couldn't come up with a plan so now they were just going to storm the castle and see what would happen.“Are you sure you're ready?” Orion asked, looking at Claire.“Stop asking me boy, you have no idea what your aunt has done in the past. Now let's go get Jack.” Claire said walking to the door.Ariadne was nervous as she stared the ship into the harb
Kidnapped:Ariadne came out of the captain's cabin, her face flushed a little. She smiled a little embarrassed at seeing what she saw. She straightened up and gained her composure. Patrick raised an eyebrow at her asking what was wrong but she just smiled sweetly in return. He walked over to her with a puzzle look on his face.“Are you alright?” He asked, taking her hand in his.“Aye I’m ok. Kaleb and Dani that's all. Anyways, how's it going with the rest of the crew?.” Ariadne laughed, his fingers entwining with his.“Good we're just waiting on the rest of the flower water.” Patrick said, nodding to the lower deck. The men had lined up and were waiting to get
Cure:Several minutes which seemed like hours passed. They began setting up a system. Each person infected would get serum followed by the flower water. Then those not infected would have the flower water as a precaution if the rash occurred then the serum. Ariadne glanced at Danica who was still out. She sighed heavily, Kaleb touched her shoulder lightly trying to comfort her.“ I don't know what else to do. I can't think of anything else.” She whispered, her voice cracking as she spoke. She could feel her hands starting to shake, she was about to lose it. She took a deep breath in trying to calm herself before she lost control. This was too much, this all was too much. The company, the pressure, the voyage, and now she needed Dani to wake up. She didn't realize it but her breathing rapidly change
Poisoned:They made their way out of the jungle so much quicker and faster than they did before. Their feet hitting the sandy beach soil, arms filled with flowers as they made it to the rowboat all running the best they could on the sand. They all wanted back on the ship as soon as possible. Kaleb dropped his arm full of flowers into the boat Danica and Araidne climbed in. Patrick dropped the ones he was carrying into the rowboat as well. Kaleb and Patrick began pushing the rowboat into the ocean. One the boat was floating in the water they both climbed in. They began to row back to the ship hoping everything was still ok. The ocean water seemed to be effortless to paddle through and they reached the ship in no time. The ropes were lowered down to help capture the row boat. Patrick and Kaleb fastened the rowboat to the ropes and the crew began pulling it up. Once on board they unloaded
Flowers:The rowboat crashed into the ocean Ariadne was flung forward into Patrick’s lap. He wrapped his arms quickly around her, steading her. She smiled softly at him as he helped her sit back on the seat. Danica watched the exchange and she was slowly starting to believe he might be a good guy or a very good actor. It was hard to trust him. Kaleb handed the oar to Patrick and they began making their way back to the island. The sky was now riddled with stars and the moon was the only light they had guiding them. Danica prayed that they could find the way back to the arch way with the white flowers. As they approached the shoreline Danica went to hop out but felt a hand catch her shoulder.“You and Ariadna stay in the boat we can pull it in.'' Patrick said and jumped into the water before she could say anything back.
Almost: Danica’s feet hit the beach sand and the amount of joy she felt finally being out of the jungle and nothing bad happening was overwhelming. She scanned the beach and realized the crew was gone. She could see the Evening Star sitting out just past the shallow. She glanced quickly at Ariadne , her eyes questioning where everyone was. “They are safe. I had them go to the ship. I thought it would be safer.” She smiled at her sister. Jonah came out and stood next to Danica scanning the beach as well. His eyes found the Evening Star and he smiled seeing it sitting in the ocean waiting for them. “Let's get in the row boats.” Jonah said walking ahead to the row boats, he wanted nothing more than to be on his ship. Danica
Tea:Kaleb smirked watching Danica lead the way his eyes fixated on her. Patrick glanced at him slightly as he helped carry the chest. Kalbe caught him looking at him and raised his eyebrow. A silly smile formed on Patrick’s lips.“What?” Kaleb said his voice was drawn out as if he knew what his brother was going to say.“So did you find a reason to stop your endless roaming?” Patrick asked, his smile growing.Ariadne squeezed by the brothers hurrying to catch up to Danica. She raised an eyebrow at Kaleb hearing the question Patrick asked him. Instead of stopping to listen she kept going. They didn't have time for endless chit chat and she needed to form a plan with her sister.“Did you find a reason to take chances?” Kaleb shot back at him and nodded towards Ariadne who hurried to catch up to Danica. The two stared at the two women, both men stunned at the view. One bright like the sun, constant l
