Wednesday
I got up late and went to the kitchen after making a trip to the bathroom. I was surprised to see that Dad wasn't up yet. I made a bowl of cereal and went to watch the news. The reports were terrifying. This illness was now being dubbed The Nightmare since it made you sleep more and more until you just didn't wake up. The Nightmare was being reported in every country in the world and every state in the US.
"It's impossible to determine the death toll or how many are infected at this time. Officials are now advising to stay home if possible. The hospitals are overrun as are all clinics and doctor offices. Stay home. Stay safe" the anchor said as my Dad finally walked in.
I quickly turned off the tv.
"How are you?" I asked with concern.
Dad grinned at me.
"I'm fine. I just stayed up too late" He replied and I nodded.
"Lets watch some movies" I suggest
"Sounds good" Dad answered.
We spent the whole morning and afternoon watching movies together. Even though we were both worried, it was wonderful to have that time with him.
"I'm going to go make dinner" Dad said
"Okay. I'm going to go check in with my friends and then I'll come help you" I replied.
I ran upstairs and saw that I already had a few messages. One from Sammy and a couple from Craig. I opened Sammy's first.
Sammy: Don't worry but I'm not going to be able to be in contact for a while. I'm safe and I love you. You're my best friend.
What the hell? I thought and quickly called her but it went straight to voicemail. I was in a panic but I didn't know what else I could do.
I checked the messages from Craig hoping that he had some insight.
Craig: Shit. You are not going to believe what my parents just tried to tell me!
Craig: This can't be true
Craig: Call me!!!
I called him but it went to voicemail. I left a message and paced my room for a few minutes. I tried calling April, Olive and Lance but none of them answered either. I didn't know what else to do so I put my phone in my pocket and went to help Dad with dinner. I told him all about what was going on while we ate.
"Should I go check on them?" I asked, worried.
"No. We need to stay put. It will be okay. We will all be okay" Dad said, sounding like he was trying to convince himself as well as me.
We both went to bed early not wanting to watch the news.
Thursday
Dad and I both got up early and made breakfast together.
"Since we are going to be here for a while, we should probably clean up a bit today" Dad suggested while we ate.
We spent the morning cleaning and getting caught up on laundry. After we ate lunch, Dad recommended that we pull out our emergency kits, "Just in case". We went and got them out of the closet.
"We have plenty of candles, food and water" I said.
"Let me show you how to work the emergency radio" Dad said.
He taught me how to crank it and then explained how to use the flares if I needed them.
We watched a movie and read for a while. Then we made a quick dinner and both went to bed. I checked my phone one last time but no one had called or texted me. I couldn't stop worrying so I just read in bed for a while and finally fell asleep.
Friday
Our morning was the same as the past few days. Dad and I made and ate breakfast together. We watched the news which was even bleaker than it had been. They were reporting that millions were dead. The rough guess was about 40% of the population was dead or dying. I looked at Dad after we heard that. That's when I saw it. The expression that will always haunt me. I knew then that nothing would ever be okay again. So did he.
We lost power that afternoon. Dad didn't seem surprised. Luckily, we have a wood burning stove out on the enclosed porch and it was late summer so we didn't get too cold and we could cook. We tried to use as much of the stuff out of the fridge as possible. We also had well water so we didn't have to worry about not having water, though we decided to boil all drinking water just to be safe. There wasn't much else that we could do. We read and talked and hugged and cried. We checked the radio for the news every few hours. We made dinner and then went to bed. I couldn't sleep and went to Dad's room.
"Can I sleep in here with you?" I asked and he nodded.
I crawled in his bed and he held me. I felt safe and finally fell asleep.
Saturday
Dad was still sound asleep when I woke. I got up and made breakfast. After eating, I checked the radio. It was almost all static. I was about to give up when I heard a voice.
"If any human can hear this, stay hidden. All the legends are real. Vampires, Werewolves, everything. They are capturing us in the streets. Stay hidden no matter what"
I waited to hear but that's all the voice said, over and over. I ran to Dad's room with the radio.
"Dad! You have to hear this" I said but then stopped in my tracks.
He was trying to wake up but he looked exhausted.
"NO! Dad!" I yelled as I ran to him, forgetting about the radio.
He coughed a dry cough and then I knew for sure. My Dad was going to die.
"It's okay, Kitty. I just didn't sleep well" Dad lied and I pretended to believe him
"Sure Dad, are you hungry?" I asked
"No thanks, I'm just going to sleep a bit longer" He replied.
I nodded and went back to the kitchen with tears in my eyes. I cleaned up and tried the radio. I made soup for lunch and took some up to Dad. He had gotten worse since this morning.
"Come on, Dad. You have to eat" I whined and finally got him to eat a bowlful and a cup of tea.
He fell asleep right after eating though. I went back to the kitchen and cleaned up. I took the radio and a book and sat in the big comfy chair in Dad's room so I could watch over him. As it go darker, I lit a few candles around the room. He barely stirred as he slept. I fell asleep in the chair and woke up the next morning to the sunlight streaming in the windows.
Sunday
When I opened my eyes on my Dad, I knew. He was dead.
"NO! DADDY!" I screamed and ran to him.
His lips were blue and his body was cold. He had died a while ago and there was nothing I could do.
I sat with him most of the day, in a stupor, sobbing over a father that would never hug me again. Would never help me with my homework again. Would never hold me while I cried over something trivial. Would never bake cookies with me again. Would never watch a movie with me again. Would never make me dinner again. Would never take pictures of me before prom. Would never watch me graduate. Would never help me get ready for college. All our hopes and dreams were gone. Nothing would ever be the same again. Nothing would ever be right again.
I mourned him for hours, alone, in our home. Finally I decided to do the last thing that I could ever do for my wonderful father. I wrapped him in his favorite quilt. I went out to the garage and pulled out the wheelbarrow. I wheeled it to my Dads room and hefted him into it. I rolled his body out to his favorite spot in the garden. I went back to the garage and got the shovel and brought it over. I dug for hours. I had blisters all over my hands but I didn't stop. When the blister broke open and bled, I still didn't stop. When the sun sank and the moon arose, I didn't stop. When exhaustion and dehydration made my vision blurry, I didn't stop. I finally stopped when I passed out on the cold ground next to my father's body.
Monday
I laid there all night. I had vague recollections of a dog coming to sniff me and then the sound of shoveling. When I awoke in the morning, the hole was much bigger and deeper than I remembered. I drug my sore body up and went into the house. I drank a glass of water and took a shower. I dressed in my black dress and brushed my hair. I didn't know what to do to say goodbye to my father. We were never religious and so I decided to read from his favorite book of poems. I took the book out and picked some late blooming wildflowers. I slowly walked to my Dad's grave site and put the book and flowers down. I gently tugged his body into the deep hole and began covering it. Luckily it was much easier to fill in than it was to dig. After I was done, I put the flowers on top of the mound and read him his favorite poems between my sobs. As the sun set, I finished.
"I love you, Daddy. Goodbye" I whispered and walked into the house.
As I shut the door, I heard a lone coyote or wolf baying. I went up to my room and took another shower. I fell into my bed and slept for a long time.
Tuesday
I awoke late in the morning and got up in a daze. Maybe I was finally sick. I wasn't that upset about it. My Dad was dead. All of friends were probably too, I reasoned. Why should I live? I thought. But still, I woke up. I was hungry so I went to the kitchen. Anything in the fridge or freezer was spoiled so I ate dry cereal and an apple. I didn't want to boil any water so I drank some of our bottled water... my bottled water. It was just me now. I kept having to remind myself of that. After I ate, I sat down in the living room and stared at the wall for the rest of the morning.
That afternoon, I finally shook myself out of my stupor. I heated up a can of soup and drank some more water.
I decided that I should go out to the garden and pick any late harvest vegetables that were ripe. I had no idea how long I was going to need to survive on the food left in the house so I needed to make sure not to waste any potential resources. I picked a couple of squashes that would feed me for the next few days. After that, I went foraging in the woods and found a bag of mushrooms and some late berries. Yum. When I got home, I made a dish with one of the squash and half of the mushrooms and decided to save the berries for breakfast.
I tried the radio and heard the familiar voice that was announcing the warning before but now it had some added information at the end.
"Vampires can killed with a stake to the heart or cutting off the head. They can be hurt and sometimes killed by fire. Beware, they are capturing humans to feed on. Stay out of any populated areas. If you see any, proceed with extreme caution. Werewolves are also catching humans. We don't know why. They can only be killed with silver. They are extremely strong and can change shape at will. At the time of this recording at least 70% of the human population is dead. There are other creatures out there working for the vampires but I don't have much information about them. There are witches that have spells and seem to be able to manipulate different elements but they can be killed or hurt like a human. There have also been reports of other kinds of fairy or elf type creatures. Iron seems to be the only thing that can harm them. Don't trust anyone. Even if they look human. Even if they were someone you knew before. No one is safe. Hide!"
I listened to the whole recording over and over. This couldn't be true. I tried other stations and found another voice.
"Any one still alive and uninfected please make your way to the nearest city. There are black vans driving around that will help you. They will take you to our safe houses where there is food and water. It is safe"
I cringed at the voice. I didn't know how but I knew that it was lying. I could hear it. I shook my head and put out my small fire in the stove. I definitely didn't want any smoke to attract attention to my house. I changed and got into bed. I laid there for a long time, thinking, coming up with a plan.
WednesdayI got up early and ate my berries while I made a list of things to pack. The house was too dangerous to stay in if the radio was right. I was going to have to start moving food and provisions to my various campsites to be safe. On top of that, I made a pack that I would need to keep with me at all times. That's the list I was working on.RadioFlashlightFire starterStakeKnifeFlaresSomething ironSomething silverBow and arrowsFood and water for one dayI looked at my list and hoped that I was remembering everything. I wasn't very good with the bow, Dad bought it for me after I read Hunger Games and begged him for one. I tried to shoot with it a few times but got bored. I was going to have to remedy that. I grabbed my strongest book bag and filled it with the items, adding a picture of Mom and Dad and one of all my friends in a bi
I drifted in and out of consciousness as I tried to stay awake to figure a way out of this mess."Dammit, Clay! I told you not to follow me!" I heard a voice yell. Clay? and that voice... I knew it."I'm glad that I did. You know that one of us should just bite her now. The pack is going to lose their minds over her. You or I will have to claim her and look at her! We will have to fight every wolf around" another voice said. I recognized the voices. Both of them. And what were they talking about? Pack? Wolf? I felt myself being lifted up."She's so sick. We can't just leave her. Mom will know what to do. Grab her pack and bow." the first voice said. I fluttered my eyes open and saw one of my oldest and most trusted friends."Craig? Am I dead?" I asked, confused. He smiled down at me as he carried me through the forest."No. You'
I looked toward Craig's family and smiled."I would like to thank you for all your hospitality. I would hate to overstay my welcome so I can leave if I'm causing difficulties" I began. Craig's dad stepped forward and hugged me."Of course not! You are like family. We can't let you live alone in the woods" he said as he let me go."Thanks, Mr. O'Brien" I replied."Call me Johnny" he said as he led me over to the couch.I hugged Maria and then Clay."Hey, Kitty" Clay said but he wouldn't look in my eyes.I looked at him closely. I remembered what he said l
"Have you decided about joining the pack?" Colton asked after a moment."Can I sleep on it?" I asked.I wanted to talk it over with Craig but I was pretty sure that I was going to join."Sure." Colton agreed."I made us lunch, lets all go into the dinning room" Maria suggested and we followed her.Craig held my hand and sat next to me at the table."Do you need help?" I asked Maria."Sure! Thanks! Can you help me bring everything out?" Maria asked and I stood up.Craig followed me. We both took out dishes and Craig g
I looked at Clay first. He wouldn't look at me at first but he finally looked into my eyes. I saw a fire there but I didn't know what caused it. Anger or lust? I wondered.{He's mad that Craig is going to be Alpha. He's also mad that Craig and you are close. He wants you. Be careful. His anger can change to something very dark} the voice in my head explained."Clay, I heard you last night. In the woods? You wanted to bite me. To change me. Without my consent." I said softly to him. His face went from confusion to shocked to embarrassed."I just wanted to protect you. From guys like Neil. And so you would be able to join the pack. I was afraid that you were going to die." Clay stammered.
POV KittyI woke up the next morning in Craig's bed, in his arms. I was startled for a second but then everything came rushing back. He opened his eyes and looked at me."How'd you sleep, darlin'?" He asked. I looked at him and smiled."Good. I haven't slept that way in months" I confessed and he grinned at me.I stood up and ran to the bathroom. Craig went after I came back."What's the plan for today?" I asked when he came back.He shrugged."The meeting isn't until tonight and I'm off today, so we're free" he told me.
POV Craig"Mom! We're home!" I called out."I'm in the kitchen. Come have lunch" Mom called.I smiled, knowing that both Kitty and I were starving. My mom was the best.Kitty took off her bow and arrows and we both took off our coats and hung them before walking to the kitchen. Mom and Clay were sitting at the table, eating sandwiches. Clay smiled at Kitty but sent a glare at me which I was happy to return."All the sandwich stuff is out over there. Help yourself. Abby should be here in a couple of hours." Mom told us.Kitty made a cheese and veggie sandwich while I stacked up meat on mine. We sat next to each other
POV KittyI slipped into the limo after Abby as Neil and Craig glared at each other. I tugged on Craig's hand and he shook himself out of his stare down and sat next to me. Maria and Johnny just chuckled as Craig pulled me close. Abby rolled her eyes and stared out the window and Clay scoffed and did the same."Don't worry, Kitty. We will all stay close to you tonight. No one will hurt you, Colton would have their heads if anyone dared harm you." Johnny reassured me.I looked at Craig and he nodded. I wasn't really worried about someone harming me. I was worried about Craig. If the interaction with Neil was any sort of indication, tonight was going to be rough. I put my head on Craig's shoulder."Calm do
5 Years LaterPOV KittyI nervously paced the room for a moment as I thought back to all the little moments that brought me here. I smiled as I looked out the window. It was a bright November day. The air was just beginning to turn into the crisp fall air I loved but it was still warm and lovely. It was a perfect day.My grinned turned even bigger as I watched the pack set up the chairs and aisle in the back yard. They all worked together and soon everything looked to be done. The pack had grown so rapidly in these past few years. News got out about the pack that accepted everyone including Humans and soon Supernaturals and Humans were arriving at our doorstep in droves. The Supernatural Council even visited a few years ago. We were all nervous that they would order us to disband but we were pleasantly surprised to find that they were completely supportive of us.It didn't hurt that we h
POV KittyThe next morning I awoke in Craig's arms. I looked up to see him already awake and staring at me with a smile."Creeper." I teased and he chuckled in his raspy morning voice."Only for you, Darlin'" he replied and I blushed and tried to hide my face."Aww. I love that blush and I work hard for it. Don't hide it from me." he teased back."Stttooopp" I whined blushing even more. "Alright, alright. Are you hungry, still tired? What do you want or need?" he asked seriously. That's when it hit me that today was my Grandmother's funeral. I could feel my face fall and Craig must have noticed it too."Don't do that, baby. I know that today will be difficult for you but I'll be by your side the entire time. So will the whole pack. You aren't alone anymore. You will never be alone again, alright?" he said as he looked deep into my eyes.I nodded and he stared at me for a second."I'm so sorry tha
POV CraigAfter the joining oath ended, Kitty rushed off to see her family. I watched her but didn't join them right away. I wanted her to have a bit of time with her family and I didn't want to suffocate her. In reality though, I wanted nothing more than to go pick her up and lock her in our room with me. My wolf and I were still trying to calm down from the recent events and it was taking all my willpower not to act like the caveman I really was. Clay and Luna came up to me and I smiled at their joined hands. Clay introduced me to Luna and I smiled warmly at her and shook her hand. She returned my smile. I looked back over to check on Kitty and Clay followed my gaze."Bro, is this killing you? I didn't think you'd let her leave your side. At least not yet." he teased.I scoffed but cringed internally knowing that he understood that this was torture for me."She seems so sweet and lovely." Luna chimed in with a calming voice and
POV KittyWhen we got back to the pack house. Colton ordered everyone to go rest and to regroup that evening for a huge dinner. "Will everyone have a bed?" I asked Craig and he smiled at me as he carried me up to our room."Darlin' we don't even use half of the rooms in this place. Everyone will be fine." he assured me.He walked into our room and I took a deep breath. "I can't believe that I'm finally here again. I've missed this place so much." I sighed as he set me on the bed."Sally helped me set your alter back up and I was sure to bring all your things back and put them away." Craig said as he opened the cupboard to show me the alter."Thank you so much! I was worried about my Mother's book." I smiled at him."Like I would leave something so important to you." he scoffed."I'm gonna take a shower. I feel gross." I stated as I stood up."Can I join you, Darlin'?" he asked.I looked u
POV CraigWe raced after Kitty into the hallway. The group that was originally there was gone but I didn't have time to think about it as Kitty ripped open the door on the left side of the hall. This was the door that Sally, Paul, Sammy, Zeke, Kitty's Grandmother and Sammy had gone in. The room looked similar to the one we found Nick in but it was all but destroyed. Drawers and shelves were scattered on the floor. We could hear crying and screaming. My blood chilled as we made our way to the sound. I tried to grab Kitty back when we saw what was happening but she was too fast and ran towards the chaos. In the center of the room stood Nick's mother. She was holding Kitty's Grandmother who was obviously dead. Saga and Sally were crying and screaming as Paul, Zeke and Sammy looked on in disbelief."She's dead. You are all next. I will take your power just as I've take hers." Nicks mother laughed.Kitty slipped in between her Aunts an
POV CraigI woke to the sound of a scream. Not just any scream, it was Kitty's scream. The sound had me jumping to my feet. As I stood, Clay looked over to me. He looked like he was just getting up as well. I looked around to see Neil standing looking in horror around the room. Abby and Tommy were still on the ground but I could see them breathing.I could hear a voice talking and even laughing faintly. Clay, Neil and I all exchanged a look and crept towards the noise. Just as we were about to turn the corner we heard a sound that I never want to hear again. It was Kitty screaming but it was such a raw and primal sound, full of heartbreak and fear but yet resilience and bravery too. It was bittersweet and made my eyes tear up.A bright light appeared and we rushed towards it. We were shocked to see that it was Kitty. She was literally radiating light. It washed over us and I felt a calmness in my soul. When it faded along with her scream, I was
POV KittyTrigger warningI watched in disbelief as Craig fell to the ground. Nick stood behind him with a syringe and an evil smile."What did you do?!!!" I screamed at him."Don't worry. I just knocked him out. He'll be fine. Well, he would be fine if I wasn't going to kill him." Nick smirked at me.Nick went to bend over Craig's body but Tommy to the chance to tackle him then. Nick fell with Tommy on top of him. Tommy stayed on him and began punching Nick in the face as hard as he could. Nick took a few good hits before he pushed Tommy off him and Tommy went flying into the wall. I watched as he slid to the ground, unconscious.I looked around the room to see all my friends on the ground. I was just glad that they were all alive still. I took a deep breath and glared at Nick."Now it's just you and I." Nick smirked and I narrowed my eyes at him."How did you do that?" I gestured toward
POV CraigI took a deep breath and gripped Kitty's hand as Clay swung the door open. We silently walked in and looked around. We looked to be in a giant storage area. There were cabinets and drawers all over the walls and lining down the middle. I turned to look at Kitty in confusion. She shrugged with just as much confusion in her eyes.Tommy looked towards us and opened his mouth to speak when we heard a shuffling sound. Neil gestured for us to stay quiet as we crept towards the noise silently. We crept around another corner to see Nick frantically searching through drawers and throwing stuff around. We watched as he grabbed something and nodded. He threw that object into a gym bag that was on the floor next to him. Then he continued searching.Clay and I glance at each other but then I saw Nick freeze in my peripheral vision. My eyes snapped to him and I watched in horror as he took a deep breath and smirked."Kitty." he said and turne
POV KittyI watched as Nick lost his last shred of sanity and humanity. I could literally see that light die in his eyes. I knew that I should be scared. I was standing in front of great evil. This vampire and his coven were powerful and worse than that, they had no morals or standards. They would rip us apart if we let them.I wasn't scared though. I felt as though everything in my life had led up to this moment. Every thing I had gone through in the woods, with the pack, losing my Dad, even losing my Mom. All of it led here. I knew then that this was what I was meant to do. This was bigger than Nick wanting me as his. This was about an evil council oppressing and harming the very Vampires they were supposed
