When we finally returned home, Alexander remained silent. It was like he had a word cap. Did he regret what he said to me? He couldn’t have, right?

“There you are!” Maggie cheered, bouncing down the stairs of the Packhouse. I shut the jeep door behind me and watched as she bound up to me. “Here I am.” I snorted, letting her grab me by the wrist, “Come on, I wanna show you something.” She pulled me away from the car, not allowing me to tell Alexander bye before leading me into the house. I tossed a look over my shoulder at Alexander as he climbed out of his vehicle, watching us as we left him alone.

“Maggie, where are you taking me?” I demanded as she tugged me toward my room, “I want to show you something! So just keep your mouth shut and witness your surprise!”

“What?” She rolled her eyes and ignored me now. I heaved an annoyed sigh and allowed her to lead me to my room. “You’re going to love it!” She squealed as she stood me in front of my room, “I already know what I got, thou

Adam and I walked side-by-side through the thinned-out part of the woods. This is where the younger kids walk to the lake near the house since they could easily get lost; this was the Pack's solution to allow them to walk throughout the woods without being managed. Children here were much more responsible than where I’m from. “Alexander gave an Alpha order, Isabella. Do you understand what that means?” He asked, causing me to glance over at him. I nodded my head, “Yes. I have to listen to it.” He bobbed his head once, “Yes. And until we get this sorted out, we shouldn’t speak about it much… All that I can say is that light-colored eyes are very important and that when you shift, Alexander must be present.” “Don’t you mean if? For all we know, I could be like Maggie and not be able to shift at all.” I shrugged, trying to hold on to hope that maybe I didn’t have to stay here, no matter how much it was growing on me. I missed my old life, my old routines, Gabe, my work. I didn’t wan

I did my hardest to try and avoid Alexander after that. I felt embarrassed that I had let my guard down the way I did, especially in front of him. I threw myself into my studies with Adam, distracting myself from learning everything I could from him. Absorbing the information like my brain was a sponge. Adam seemed thrilled about this new side of me, and it didn’t seem like he knew the reason behind it either. Good for me. “And, that’s the battle of Sun Hill.” He circled on the whiteboard the most oversized lettering. “So, because two alpha’s fought, that’s why there’s a King Alpha now?” I shrugged one shoulder, “I think that’s kinda… Weird.” “No, the reason we have a King Alpha, is so that a large-scale war like that never happens again. Not only did we have mass casualties, but the humans also suffered as well. This was what we could do for the peace between ourselves and to keep from being hunted to extinction by frightened humans.” Adam corrected, adjusting his glasses on the

I groaned, sitting up on the mattress I fell asleep on. I rubbed my left arm, feeling sore. I glanced around the room I was in. I didn’t recognize this place at all. Not only that, but it appeared as if a tornado had ripped through the small space. A table was flipped, a few of the chairs that looked as if they belonged in the set were tossed around, and a leg was missing from one. The couch had a massive gash from one end to the other, the fluff exposed and thrown about. The shower curtain was ripped, and the rod looked to be broken as well. I clutched the blanket that covered my body, heaving a heavy sigh before glancing down. I gasped in horror when I realized that I was naked. I squeezed the blanket for dear life, hoping that no one would be around to see me as I searched for my clothes. I scanned the room, seeing if maybe I could scout out the location of my nightgown. After a few moments, I found it lying near the couch. I shot to my feet and hurried to my clothes, scoping the

I woke up staring up at the ceiling. Rolling over, I saw the sleeping form of Alexander. I touched his bare shoulder before sitting up to look around the room. The room wasn’t trashed like the day before when I woke up. I sighed, knowing that Alexander and I didn’t do anything as I had blacked out once again. Feeling relieved, I scooted to the edge of the bed, went to the bathroom area, and turned the shower on.My body was sore, so I made a mental note to ask Alexander about it when he woke up. The shower was quick to heat up, making me happy that I didn’t have to stand too long waiting for it to get warm. I closed the curtain behind me and wrapped my arms around myself as the water streamed down my body. I sighed happily, feeling all my pains and woes melt off as the tepid liquid swirled down the drain. I wondered why showers had that effect on me.

“What do you want to know?” He asked. “What was my dad like?” I asked. Alexander smiled brightly, “John was interesting. He had a strange outlook on life, and he was always very positive. I remember one time when we came to visit your pack, you were almost 2… You were attached to him and refused to leave his side. Even though we all knew you wouldn’t understand what was being talked about, your dad didn’t want you to be around while we talked about it. John made you leave and you were absolutely devastated.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “I remember thinking that you were spoiled, but then, I didn’t know that you both had a deeper bond than I had with my father. It was love.” “You knew me when I was younger?” I asked, propping my head on my hand to look at him as he spoke. “Yeah. I knew all of your siblings. When our packs would meet every 3 months to talk business, I would see you all. Out of all your siblings, you were the only one who wasn’t scared of me. Your sister was petrified

I woke up the following day without Alexander in the bed with me. Maybe the conversation was too much for him, and he needed space? I waited for him to return, but instead of him bringing me my meals, it was Adam. When I asked where Alexander was, Adam tried his hardest to change the subject, say he was busy, or not say anything. I was confused; why all of a sudden did Alexander run off? And why wasn’t Adam telling me where he was?I didn’t sleep much that night, as per my new norm. But this time, I didn’t fall back asleep. My mind was racing with thoughts ranging from belittling myself to thinking that Alexander was regretting bringing me back. By the time Adam brought me breakfast, I had been pacing for over an hour. I hardly noticed him coming in, not that he said anything to me anyway.“Are you alrig

I blinked lazily at Adam as he spoke about how the territories were separated. “Territories are split into four major sections. North, South, East, and West. Then our territory is split into north and south regions. Our region is in the North-Eastern territory. Three packs run the region because of the high populations in neighboring cities, Alexander’s pack and our pack combined. Four packs run the south region. The more dense populations are, the more packs are to be in the area. So, on the West coast, it is split into North and South as well, because it has high-density areas and three packs in both regions. All packs are named after either mountains or bodies of water near them.” I did my best to try and stay awake, but his dull lecture made it complicated. It had been a month since we started these lessons, and I felt like they would never end. “For now, we’ll learn about the eight packs in our region. Starting off with the southern ones first. The largest pack is the Atlantic pa

I waited for Alexander for a while before sighing and going to take a shower instead. I was sticky from the sweat of our heated make-out session, and I shivered when the cool shower mist sprayed on my heated skin, goosebumps forming in its wake.“I need to get a hold of myself,” I grumbled, wrapping my arms around my torso. Every time Alexander was around me anymore; it was like I became a love-sick puppy and oozed idiocy. My rational mind left and was replaced by mush. I rubbed my scalp and heaved an annoyed sigh. This was the epitome of embarrassment. I wanted to have more control of my emotions and actions around Alexander. It seemed like he always had the upper hand in every situation, every conversation, and every emotion when we interacted. It was impossible to pretend aro

I watched as Maggie began to fall, but I caught her before hitting the ground. “Maggie,” I whispered, looking down to see a vertical slash in her abdomen. “Hey there.” She chuckled, grimacing. I felt blood warming my thighs as I cradled her. “What were you thinking-” I began to say but she stopped me. “I couldn’t let you come in here empty-handed,” she patted the pocket of my slacks. I followed her hand to feel something inside. I frowned and dug inside the pocket to feel cool metal against my fingertips, “Maggie, you didn’t.” “Alexander’s always prepared. So this time, I came prepared. Call it a mother’s intuition.” I pulled out the metal bracelet that I had given her as a kid. “Nothing in the rules about regifting, bitch.” Maggie raised her hand to the Queen, flipping her the bird. She laughed to herself before grunting, coughing up blood. “The barrier will be up in a few minutes, j

I watched as a blonder version of Alexander appeared, “Alex! You gots a boo boo!” a cute toddler announced, small hands appearing as they clasped the air, “Up!” Alexander grinned, reaching down and sweeping me into his arms. Alexander looked to be about 23; he was built and rugged, wearing all black then as he did now. The only thing that changed was his physical appearance.“I guess we can play for a little bit before we have to go back. “What happened?” I poked his face, “Oh, I was practicing and fell.” He smiled at me softly. The memory faded and was replaced by other children, “Bella! Come play with me!” A young girl begged, I recognized her face, it was the girl from my vision. “Only if I get to play with my barbie, Margo.” I chastised, “Oh, ok.” The curly-headed girl rolled her eyes, handing

The Council members had left a while ago, leaving us alone to chatter among ourselves. Gabe had come to stand next to us, “Did I say something wrong?” He asked after a while. Adam shook his head, “No. Gabe, you didn’t. Beta Cass just knows when to call his objections.” Adam rolled his eyes, “Cocky prick.”“This could work out in our favor,” Lachlan shrugged, scooting back on the table to grab one of the folders in front of Adam. “if the Queen tries anything inside the circle, then she admits to her guilt.” He murmurs, “if she doesn’t, then she looks guilty as well.”“Wait, wait, circle?” I asked, glancing between Alexander and Lachlan, who looked up at Alexander from under his lashes. “Oh, c’mon. You didn’t te

I didn’t sleep much, but Alexander slept well as he always did. My nerves were shot, and I was nervous. Would the Council reject our case? What would happen if they did? I took a deep breath before moving to the edge of the bed, watching as the sun began to settle below the trees. There was a knock at the door, the sound made me whip my head toward the door. “Come in.” Alexander’s voice spoke behind me. I twisted to see him looking up at me, his arms behind his head. “Hurry and get dressed.” Lachlan’s voice chirped from the entryway. “Court’s starting early. Apparently they have a lot to talk about tonight.” I sighed, climbing out of the bed and going to my outfit that had been laid out for the night. “Night two.” I muttered to myself as I gathered my clothes and headed to the bathroom to get ready.

I followed Lachlan back to the house, unsure of how to feel about anything at the moment. There was a lot that Alexander still was hiding from me, and everyone had told me that there was a reason he did. Including Lachlan. There was truth to what they had said, everything that I had learned, the things that Alexander didn’t want me to know, did end up upsetting me. Like the possibility of my dad still being alive. It hurt that he knew that my dad could still be alive somewhere out there, and hid it from me. What was the reason? What could he want to protect me from that was so important than telling me that I wasn’t alone? That I still had a family? We entered the house, the once lively halls now silent because of the trial happening. Lachlan wordlessly led me to Alexander’s room, keeping whatever smart comments he was thinking to himself. At least he knew there was a time a

The rest of the hearing went by in a blur; I couldn’t think clearly. There was so much information that I had never even known about swirling around my mind that it was difficult to comprehend. The one that hurt the most was that Alexander knew that there was a possibility of my dad being alive and never told me.He knew that it bothered me, and so he tried to speak to me as the hearing adjourned for the night, but I didn’t want to hear it. I shot up from my chair and briskly walked back down the path we had walked up, our pack members who had joined us at Council watching in silence. I was angry. I was hurt. I felt betrayed by someone who shouldn’t have done things to me. I wanted to punch him; I wanted to hit him, I wanted him to feel the way I felt at the moment.I wiped the angry tears that spilled d

I stand in the mirror of Alexander’s room, dressed in a simple outfit. Most of the outfits I had prepared were too formal to wear to a court hearing. So, instead, I opted for a simple blouse and slack combo. Simple and effective. My hair was loose around my shoulders, and I wore basic makeup. Adam insisted I look as plain and unassuming as possible; it’ll look better to the Council. I heard someone shift beside me, making my eyes bounce to the door to see Alexander leaning against the doorframe. He wore a dark blue dress shirt and black slacks, his usual. Something in my heart began to ache, but I wasn’t sure what it was. “You ready?” He asked, his voice soft. I nodded my head, “Yeah….” I twisted to look at him, watching as he held his hand out to me, “Follow me.” I trailed behind him, holding his hand tightly as he guided me down the hallways and outside. A path was lit up by small lanterns guiding us into the forest. It was ominous. Adam was in tow, suitcase in hand, as he followe

As promised, Adam returned a few hours later to break down what would happen later tonight. “I need you to pay close attention, Isabella,” Adam spoke, scooting my bowl of food closer to me. “This trial is very, very, very serious. So we must prepare you as best as we can beforehand.” I shifted in my chair, looking over to Alexander, who was leaning against the window. He nodded his head at me once, confirming that Adam was not wrong.Alexander had petitioned for me to return back to my room. The nurses didn’t like that, but after finding out that not only I was a nurse and that Gabe was as well, they finally let me go. I was still fragile, but I could feel my strength returning gradually. My hearing and sense of smell were also coming back.“Because the Crown is involved with the matter
