Chapter 31

Author: Good Night
Rose stood on the steps and gaped at the TV screen, on which the clip had been paused. Summer looked beautiful, poised, and commanding on screen, but it was such an unfamiliar sight to Rose.

How could this be the same Summer she'd always manipulated and toyed with?

After a brief moment of dazedness, anger and terror washed over her. She was in such a dire situation, yet Summer was stomping all over her suffering and putting on such a show before the reporters.

No wonder she hadn't had the nerve to return to Hartford Manor last night—she didn't have the nerve to face Rose after the things she'd done!

"Rewind the clip now. I want to see what happened earlier!" Henry urged after returning to his senses.

Luke also snapped to his senses and grabbed the remote, rewinding the clip.

Henry, Luke, and Kristen were thoroughly stunned after seeing how Summer had spoken to the reporters.

"Am I seeing things, Dad? Was that Summer who rebuked the reporters with the cameras rolling?" Luke aske

Just then, Anthony's room door was pushed open. He immediately locked his phone and turned to give Rose a displeased look. "Don't you know how to knock?""Summer must've discovered something!" Rose's mind was filled with thoughts of Summer acting so out of character that she didn't notice the scornful look on Anthony's face.Anthony tensed at her words. "What do you mean by that? Did she say anything to you?""Can't you tell she's like a different person? She seems to be avoiding us, too. Look at how she stopped her home tutoring without a word—she's not even returning to the manor now!" Rose growled."She's not returning tonight?" Anthony frowned. He'd learned about Summer's preferences from Rose and already had a plan. He wanted to orchestrate an encounter with Summer that night and use her likes and dislikes to slowly get to know her better. Yet now, she wasn't even returning home!"Our plan is ruined if she's really noticed anything!" Rose snarled."That might not necessari

The phone call went on for over half an hour. Summer exhaled deeply after hanging up before focusing on her laptop again. She still had to continue challenging the hackers. She'd spent the whole day in class. As soon as she logged on, everyone who was online grew excited. Comments started flying in the black chatbox."X is here! They're here!"Summer's username on the website was the alphabet "X"."Why are you only showing up now, X? We've waited the whole day and thought you weren't coming."Summer wrote, "I was in class during the day. I just got home."Everyone was stunned. X was a student? The legend who'd only taken one afternoon to get from the bottom of the ranking to the top four was a student?Summer ignored the rest of the comments and issued a challenge to the hacker ranked third on the website. He was the only one who'd been online before Summer had gone offline yesterday. Today, however, the top three were all online. It looked like they were waiting for her.He ac

Terrence frowned slightly. "What's wrong with you?""I didn't manage to track X's IP address. I only know the general region she's in!" Fred was starting to doubt his capabilities."Where is she?" Terrence and Saul asked simultaneously."Shorewall City!"The three exchanged looks. Then, Terrence chuckled. "What a small world, huh? Looks like we all share the same hometown!"Saul and Fred looked at him wordlessly. The three of them were from affluent families and had delicate statuses in their respective families. That was why they'd been sent abroad since childhood. It was hard to believe Terrence had talked about them sharing the same hometown as X when they didn't even return to Shorewall City annually."Saul and I are bound for a trip back soon, so we might have the chance to run into this adorable run-of-the-mill computer genius." Terrence seemed particularly interested in X.Saul's smile slowly faded upon hearing Terrence's words, though. It was evident he didn't want t

There it was—Rose's twisted logic. Based on her words, Summer was an idiot for not believing her and was rubbing salt into her wounds."No one said anything to me," Summer said."Why did you say that you don't know how to face me now, then?" Rose was baffled. She couldn't help wondering what the hell was going through Summer's mind. The current situation was already keeping her on the edge of her seat—Summer wasn't making it any better."I know you're a victim, Rose." Summer stretched her neck emotionlessly. "But I can't forget the things I saw that day. When I see you, I'm reminded of those disgusting… I can't get over them, so…"Rose felt like she'd been struck by lightning. Did Summer mean that she found her dirty?"Give me some time to forget the things I saw. We can go back to being like we've always been once I'm ready," Summer said.Rose wanted to get on her nerves, didn't she? Nothing she said could hurt her now, though. On the contrary, Summer had plenty of dirt on Rose.

Mason had already watched the video countless times since it'd been released. There was no doubt that the change Summer had shown was stunning, whether in terms of her appearance or personality. He wasn't surprised, though. She'd always been full of ideas and strength, even as a child. He just didn't know what had happened to make her change in recent years.Since running into her in the alley behind the street of bars that night, it had unlocked a door buried deep within his heart. Every day, he would think of various reasons to see her. However, none of them mattered when it came to the sole reason he couldn't see her.He was currently walking the gangplank, and danger lurked everywhere in his life. He couldn't let anyone know his weak spot was hidden within the Hartford family. Otherwise, he wouldn't be the only one in danger. Summer would be, too.The atmosphere around Mason turned gloomy. The incident at the street of bars had to be concealing some sort of danger that was harm

Kristen was stunned when she heard Rose's words. Just then, Rose turned to see Kristen standing there. She hurriedly hung up and dried her tears before acting like nothing had happened. She smiled and approached Kristen. "When did you get here, Aunt Kristen?"Kristen didn't answer. Instead, she entered the room and shut the door. "Who were you on the phone with, Rose?"Rose's smile froze. "A classmate. D-Did you hear our conversation?""Yes." Kristen's expression was ugly."That person was just spouting nonsense, Aunt Kristen. Summer and I are so close, so how could she possibly hurt me just because you treat me well? I… I don't believe it." Rose started weeping as she spoke. "There was something suspicious about the whole thing, but I'll always trust Summer, no matter what. Let's not talk about this anymore.""Something suspicious? What was it?" Kristen asked. "Are you still hiding something from me?"Rose abruptly stopped crying. After a brief silence, she said, "Stop askin

Rose's smugness instantly disappeared. She'd originally imagined Kristen siding with her and going after Summer to berate her for everything. How could… How could Kristen say something like that?Still, she said, "Okay.""Your Uncle Luke has been looking into the matter, so you don't need to worry about anything. We won't let the people who hurt you off the hook," Kristen promised.Rose was so furious that she almost exploded. What was up with this bullshit investigation? She could find the pieces of trash herself. She didn't need the Hartfords to do it for her!The fact that Kristen had told her to keep the incident a secret made it clear that she had her doubts. Yet she was choosing to side with Summer. As expected, all of the Hartfords were equally evil. She wouldn't let any of them off the hook! She would make all of them pay!…Summer went to school as usual the following day. Everyone, from the teachers to the students, treated her cautiously. After all, she'd changed too

It was only after Summer had gotten into trouble that she'd heard about Annie hiring a few gangsters to extort her after school that day. The handwriting on the note was exactly like the one on Lindsey's notes. So, it was her… Summer exhaled softly and put the notebook into her bag.…Meanwhile, Annie and Becca walked along a path happily."Summer thinks she's a big deal just because she has Hartford Group, but what can it give her? Can it give her good grades? She's still dumb, isn't she? Look at how horrible her grades are—even my dog can do better than her on a test!" Annie mocked."I can't wait to see her get lectured in front of the whole school. I heard whoever does badly will even have their photo put up under the blacklist on the noticeboards everywhere!" Becca said gleefully.Just then, some students looked up from their phones to give them odd looks. Annie frowned at them. "What the hell are you guys looking at?"Before she could continue with her tantrum, the dire

Most of the time, Summer was the one who communicated with Lindsey about the character designs.Summer and Lindsey had similar artistic tastes. When it came to the character drafts, what would have normally taken a month only took a week to complete.Time passed quickly. In the blink of an eye, Power Construction's bidding event arrived.Summer arrived at the company early in the morning."What are you doing here?" Lionel asked. He was in charge of the project, and Saul, who wasn't involved, was absent."I'm just coming with you guys to watch the drama," Summer said."Does anyone from Power Construction know you?" Lionel asked."I'm just going to wear a hat and observe. It's no big deal," Summer said."Alright, then. Let's head over!" Lionel called over two other programmers from the company and headed right to the bidding event venue. Power Construction might not be a major corporation, but its platform had decent traffic. Even if it was put together on short notice, plenty

Kyle panicked. "What? How could you not say anything? The situation isn't like the rumors at all! What if Ms. Hartford misunderstands? She has such a strong personality. She's definitely not someone who will just settle for less."Kyle's impression of Summer wasn't particularly good or bad. Those few days on the island actually changed his opinions of Summer a lot. At least right now, he couldn't think of anyone else in high society who was worthy of Mason—only Summer. The most important thing was that Mason clearly liked her, too. But the fiancée situation was like a ticking time bomb.He had been worried about it since they left the island. Sure enough, something happened after just a few days.Mason said proudly, "You're underestimating the future Mrs. Hunt too much. Summer's not the kind of woman you think she is."After that, Mason walked away.Kyle stood in place, completely baffled. "What does that mean?"He didn't explain anything, but he still seemed so happy? Because of the huge success of After School, Eridanus had already gained a solid reputation in the industry.Summer said, "Good work. Is the date set yet?"Lionel replied, "It is. On the 6th of next month."Summer did the math. "Today's already the 29th, so isn't that just next week?""It is. Thankfully, this bid was a last-minute notice anyway. They have a good impression of us, so there weren't any roadblocks," Lionel said.Summer smiled. "Your friend helped, didn't he?"Lionel chuckled. "He really wants this deal to go through, too."Summer lowered her gaze. "Then, we might end up disappointing your friend.""What?" Lionel exclaimed."This bid is going to cause a direct conflict between two similar projects," Summer said slowly."Don't worry. I've already arranged everything. We'll crush them on the spot for plagiarism!" Lionel declared.Summer was silent for a moment. "That department was set up by Anthony's father-in-law to promote him. Even if we expose them and win th

"She just felt sorry for her sister," Summer mumbled. The phone call that morning, and the woman on the other end…She had been just as emotional as the little sister in Phoebe's story.Who knew what kind of mess would follow?Phoebe shook her head. "You shouldn't kill anyone even if you feel sorry for your sister! Alright! Now eat your chicken. I simmered it for hours.""Phoebe, have you ever heard any rumors about Mason Hunt?" Summer suddenly asked.Phoebe was shocked as she lowered her voice. "Ms. Hartford, you can't mention that name in this house!"Summer laughed. "Grandpa isn't around. Didn't he save me last time? I'm quite curious about him.""Don't be." Phoebe's expression carried a look of warning. "Wait. Mason is incredibly handsome, and you've always liked handsome people. Oh, my God, Ms. Hartford! Could you have fallen for him? You can't. Anyone else is fine, but you can't fall for Mason!""What's wrong with Mason?" Summer asked.Phoebe looked determined to snuff

Summer could more or less guess the story.Mason's fiancée's sister had probably woken up from her vegetative state. She probably couldn't accept the deaths of her family and refused to accept that Mason had fallen for someone else.Summer hated trouble. Normally, with her current personality, she wouldn't even have spared this complicated situation a second glance and fled. But it was Mason. She owed him her life, so how could she flee?On top of that, she didn't want to run, either."I'll give him a chance. If he manages to deal with the situation, then we'll continue. If he doesn't, then I won't get caught up with it. The lessons from my past life were more than enough!" Summer said to herself. When she got home, the others were not back yet.Summer had dinner with Phoebe. As they ate, Phoebe chatted about the neighborhood gossip as usual. "I heard something unbelievably dramatic while I was out buying groceries today.""I love drama!" Summer immediately said."I knew it!

In the work group chat, the preparations for the project that Anthony had stolen for bidding were almost complete.Summer and those seven experts had revised and optimized the original structure greatly. Basically, the improved version was far superior to the original.Anthony had the audacity to try and poach people from the company? Then, she would make sure to crush him at the bidding meeting. The new computer was soon assembled. After the store employees loaded it into the car, Summer brought Lindsey to buy the best drawing tablet available. Finally, Summer dropped Lindsey back home. After the new setup was installed, Lindsey tested it out. It was night and day compared to her old setup. "Summer, I feel so happy!"Summer curled up on the couch, feeling her eyelids drooping down from exhaustion. She wasn't planning on leaving yet.Because…Lindsey received a message from Lionel. "It's here! What do I do now, Summer? Lionel wants me to design a mental asylum-themed poster."

"Are they like this every day?" Summer glanced back.Saul answered, "Pretty much. You seem a bit distracted today."Summer was taken aback for a moment. "Do I?"Saul pointed to her eyes. "Yeah. They usually sparkle brightly, but they seem a bit dim today."Summer felt a strange heaviness in her chest. She smiled. "It's probably because I didn't sleep well last night. I had a burst of inspiration and ended up working on the script until past 5:00 am."Saul could tell that Summer had something on her mind."You gave me great advice with my brother last time. It really helped me ease my relationship with him. So, if you have anything on your mind, you can always consider sharing with me. I might be able to help you," Saul said warmly.Summer sighed helplessly. "I don't know what to say. It's a bit complicated, so let me sort it through myself first.""I'm always here to listen," Saul said and smiled.Summer smiled back. They finished their tour and returned to the main hall whe

Summer didn't seem to care at all. "Maybe we'll run into him again."Saul didn't understand what she was trying to say. "What?"Summer shook her head. "Let's keep looking around."Saul led her through the peripheral development area before heading into the core development zone. The atmosphere there was entirely different from the outside. The place was packed with top-tier talent from all over the world, and all of them had their own quirks. At Eridanus, Summer allowed them to embrace all their quirks. Which meant the core development area looked a bit like a zoo.The moment she stepped inside, she saw a pink corn snake coiled around a man's head, flicking its tongue at her. That man's desk even had a glass tank on it. There was a massive spider inside that definitely looked venomous.Summer wasn't easily scared, but seeing so many creatures around definitely gave her goosebumps. As she walked further in, she spotted a few adorable cats, but to prevent the cats from pouncing o

Saul frowned slightly. "Go check out the merchandise department first. I'll take a look.""I want to see what's happening, too," Summer said as she headed toward the HR department. She had just heard someone mention a Mr. Lawson, after all. And it was a Mr. Lawson from across the street, too.Another gaming company in the same industrial park. Surely it wasn't the same guy that she knew?"You're being unreasonable! You skipped work for three days straight, and HR deducted your pay according to company policy!"As soon as Summer arrived, she saw a woman working in HR, on the verge of tears, being berated by a burly man with a square face."What's going on? Why are you making such a scene at the company?" Saul's tone was sharp."Director…" The young woman was about to speak. But that square-faced man cut her off and raised his voice. "Mr. Hunt, I sent an email to HR yesterday about increasing my salary, but they said you rejected it. Is that right?""You've only been in the indu
