I knew she was trying to guess at my mood but I pretended not to see it.

“Angry at the kids and me?” She finally asked softly and I spared a few glances.

“More like confused and hurt. Why would you guys do that to me?” I decided to reveal a little of my frustration.

“We did nothing, dear. At least the kids meant no harm. As for me, I only got an invite for dinner which I did not see as a big deal coming from them. Not until I got here and I saw that there was another guest waiting. Well, by then, it was too late to do much of anything.” She ended with a shrug and I gave her a disgruntled look.

“I believe a call of warning would not have been too much, would it?” I snorted coldly.

“Oh come off it, babes, we both know a call at that time would achieve nothing but cause you more worries and palpitations before you got home. And I sure did not think you needed that. Did you?” My friend almost snapped.
