“You’ll look amazing if you weren’t pouting.” Nieal handed a cup of tea to Irina.
Irina took the cup, her eyes wandered over to the selections of beverages on the long table across them. Did this mean she could only drink tea throughout the ball?
Nieal didn’t have to tell Irina directly that the other beverages weren’t for her, the cup of tea in her hand was enough for her to understand. Nieal was being over-protective again. Argh. She was a grown woman and allowed to drink alcohol.
“Then I don’t want looking amazing.”
“Oh, come on. This is my welcome home ball. Aren’t you happy that I come back with no scratch?”
“Then let me give you that scratch.” Whispered Irina as she sipped the tea. “Besides, this is my normal look, I’m sorry for being not amazing.”
Nieal laughed. Making people turned at their direction. While Irina hid her face, pretending she was enjoying her tea.
Butler Rhys came, three people was with him. ”Master, Deputy Ashen and his sons are here.”
With falter laugh on his face, Nieal turned to his butler direction. His expression smoothly slid to cordial smile at the deputy. He shook the older man’s hand briefly.
“Deputy Ashen, thanks for coming.”
“Thank you for coming home safely, Master Danieal.”
Nieal’s eyes shifted to the two younger men on the deputy’s side. “These must be your sons.” He stretched his hand for hand shaking.
The older son took Nieal’s hand. They shook hands for a few seconds as he told Nieal his name was Avery. Then Nieal’s hand shook the younger brother’s hand, he told Nieal his name was Eliot.
After some minutes talking, Nieal wished the deputy and his sons having a good time in the ball. A smooth way to actually excuse himself as he took Irina to the table where fruits and cakes were served.
“Why don’t you introduce me?” Irina questioned Nieal whose hands were busy putting some sorts of fruits and cakes onto the plate. Before the deputy were some landlords and rich merchants whom Nieal didn’t bother to introduce Irina to them too.
“Deputy Ashen already knew you. I saw you returned his nods.” Answered Nieal lightly.
“Yea, but I didn’t get the chance to greet them.” Irina took a slice of cake into her mouth. “What about his sons?”
“What about them?”
“They don’t know me.”
“I’m sure they know you too.” Nieal stood straight suddenly, turning sideways with puzzle expression. “Why? It’s very unlike you, wanting to be known.”
“Well, it’s just… I feel not right. Because you always nice to people, while I’m…” Irina didn’t want to continue. She recalled the fruit seller’s words in the market this afternoon, saying that she was a nice girl, but her action telling otherwise.
“While you?”
“Other people might think I’m rude and brainless and you keep on protecting me so I think they respect me because of you.”
They stood at the end of the table, chewing the food from the plate on Nieal’s hand.
“Who said that?” Nieal snapped.
“See…” Irina scoffed.
Chuckling, Nieal clarified. “Don’t think that way. And don’t think what other people might or might not think about you.” With teasing tone, he added. “And if they belittle you behind my back, you just need to tell me, I’ll fix it for you like I used to do when we were little.”
Irina was seven when Nieal’s mother urged her to go with thirteen years-old Nieal socializing in Youngsters event. The event turned ugly when a group of boys and girls from the upper-class family mocked Irina, calling her poor girl in nice dress, making Nieal gone crazy and beat them mercilessly.
Since then Irina had never attend any social event anymore, she spent her time reading and Nieal was punished by his parents.
Seeing Nieal lifted his brows ups and downs playfully made Irina rolled her eyes and then shook her head in disbelieve. Nieal was a leader now, she didn’t want him doing stupid things just to defend her. She could defend herself, or she could just ignore it.
“Come, I’ll introduce you to them.” Nieal motioned his head to his butler’s direction, he was with another three men. Nieal put the plate onto the table, but when Irina wanted to do the same with her cup, he told her to bring it.
They approached Butler Rhys taking longer route, since the center hall was using as dancing arena. The three men were landlords under Nieal’s territory. Nieal kept his promise, he introduced Irina and let her join in their conversation.
Just then, Irina understood why Nieal insisted her to take the tea cup. For a polite way to avoid her hand being kissed. She felt grateful.
But something bad seemed to happen in the new land as the truce representative showed up with the guard’s captain.
Nieal took Irina to the quiet corner as he gestured to his butler to take all the landlords and the new comers to his larger study.
“Look.” Nieal started with apologetic looks on his face. “I know I promised to stay by your side all night, but this new development—”
Irina put her hand upon Nieal’s anxious hand. “Go! Don’t worry about me.”
Nieal nodded. “I’ll come back soon and dance with you.”
At first, Irina was in daze, she didn’t know what to do. When her wandering eyes landed on the beverages table, an idea formed in her head. At once, she strode towards the table.
“Miss Irina, please don’t—” The maid eyes turned wide when Irina drink half glass of fruit drink then filled the glass with white wine. She gasped as Irina down the glass in one go.
Irina shushed the maid’s pleading. “Don’t worry, Rorra. You’ll just need to tell me if Nieal torture you.”
Maid Rorra was in distress watching Irina emptied her cup then poured red wine into her cup of tea. So that when Nieal came back, he would think she still have tea. Satisfy, Irina grinned at Maid Rorra, while the maid still gave her a pleading looks.
Before Irina turned her body around, she winked at the anxious maid and whispered. “Relax, I’ll be fine and you’ll be fine too. Don’t tell anyone.”
The moment Irina face the other direction, she locked eyes with a man. The distance wasn’t that far so Irina could see the interest in the man’s eyes. Thief, thought Irina inward. Who let him in?
Damn. With the wine in her tea cup, the ball had just started to be more fun for her. Why in the world she had to meet with that thief again? Meeting him twice a day was already worse, why he had to be in this ball too?
Closing her eyes for a few seconds, half hoping he would be gone when she opened her eyes again. But then again, Nieal invited everyone in the town, literally everyone, rich or poor. So, the thief was also invited.
He was still there when she opened her eyes. Still looking at her direction with the same interest looks, while those women around him tried to bring his attention back to them.
Irina blatantly threw her disgust looks at him. He lifted one brow as a respond, amused.
The man was innocent. Irina knew that. But her disappointment hadn’t gone yet, she still chose to hate him for stealing her dream. And continuing to see him throughout the ball could worsen her mood.
Fortunately, Nieal’s manor had its own library which nobody outside the manor knew it, except Irina and her father. The library was her choice of place to wait for Nieal, then she turned around and left the main hall.
Without her knowing, someone followed her.
Earlier in the morning, Lucas woke, panting. Beads of sweat visible in his forehead, damping his clothes. Horrible dreams haunted him for the past week. It felt real as if the dreams really happened in his life. When a dream came repeatedly, it usually had a deeper meaning behind it, right? But what was the meaning of his dream? Who was he? Why he had those kinds of dream? He didn’t have the answers for those questions. A week ago, Lucas woke, screaming. His head hurt like it would split into two, blurring his vision too. When the pain gradually subsided few moments later, he could see middle aged woman watching him. Concern was all over her face. She introduced herself as Mrs. Letty. She explained that she found him unconscious near her house, and had helped him because she recognized he was the same kind as her. He told her his name was Lucas when she asked and nodded when she wanted to know if he knew he was a wizard. Then, a week later, he still didn’t know who he was but his
Mrs. Letty back right when some walking guards made a loud noise with the bell in his hand. One of them yelled an announcement, he started yelling before the bell stopped tolling. To get a better hearing, some women ran to the front door, then the rest followed. While Lucas and Mrs. Letty looked at each other, at loss of word. They shook their head almost in unison then resumed their work. “Lucas…” A woman called him. She was running from the door to his table. Panting lightly, she asked. “Will you go to the ball with—” Her words cut by another woman. “No! Don’t you think about it.” Then she looked at Lucas with what she thought was an adorable face. “What do you think, Lucas? We’ll see you at the ball, yes?” The guards announced that the town’s master invited everyone in the town to his welcome home ball in his manor. “Err…” Lucas hesitated. “Come on, it’ll be fun.” Another woman tried to convince him. His and Mrs. Letty’s table were full with women, waiting for his answer. “Al
From behind a huge statue of a woman, Lucas peeked, she was in the front of tall and thin door. She opened it then disappeared into it as the door closed itself. After some times, ensuring no one was around, Lucas strode towards the door and went inside it. On a thick carpeted floor his feet fell into a silent step, his eyes wandered over the exclusive sight before him. The corridors decorated with expensive decorations and beautiful paintings were hanging on the wall. In his forgotten life, Lucas knew that he wasn’t a servant or butler, but he felt familiar with this kind of lux, somehow. There was one black and white drawing among the paintings on the wall that caught his attention. It obviously a drawing of this manor, drew from inside the stable. Very unique perspective, admired Lucas. Who drew this? Couldn’t stay long to keep on admiring the paintings as he was on a mission of tailing Irina. Lucas managed to have quite distance so that she wouldn’t notice. She led him through s
“This place, how far more do I have to walk?” Irina asked, panting with her palm against a bark of tree for support. “I thought you like walking in the forest.” Nieal chuckled. “This isn’t inside the forest yet, still the ranch area.” “Whaaaaat?” “Please don’t ask me to piggyback you. My poor back can’t survive your not-so transportable weight.” “What did you say?” “You’re heavy.” “Come again.” “You’re fat.” Irina fumed, glaring at Nieal. She looked down to the dry soil, searching for something to be thrown at Nieal. When she found a twig, Nieal had already ran. Irina ran too, chasing after him. Nieal’s laughter sounded unclear and distant, and Irina began to laugh too. Nieal slowed down so that Irina could reach him. When Nieal had a complete stop, he turned his body around to see how far Irina left behind. Turn out, Irina was not far. She looked surprised, didn’t expect Nieal would stop running so sudden. It seemed hard for her to slow down at that short distance. While Iri
Nieal leaned on the door frame of Irina’s bedroom, observing her. While Irina sat on the windowsill, looking down, she seemed absorb in her thought, didn’t know Nieal walked in closer. “Something interesting down there?” Nieal craned forward. He was standing on the other side of the window frame. Her reaction was slow. She looked at Nieal like she didn’t recognize him. “He’s a wizard, Nieal.” “Ah, so that’s what you think of.” Nieal breathed. “So what if he’s a wizard? We’re taught to be an open-minded human being, don’t cast him out just because he’s a wizard.” Irina narrowed her eyes. “I don’t mean it that way, Mr. so open mind.” Nieal chuckled at her retort as she continued. “I mean if people find out who he really is, he could be in a great danger.” “You’re worry about him.” Nieal teased. “Of course, I’m worry.” Irina snapped. “He saved our lives. We should be grateful to him.” “I am grateful. That’s why I made—” “Grateful to who?” Roman’s voice sounded from the door, start
The tailor shop was not open yet. But Irina had no other place to go, so she waited in front of the shop with butler Rhys. He was following her from the moment he saw her suddenly went out of the kitchen. “You don’t have to stand idle with me here when you have much to do.” Irina told the butler. Butler Rhys smiled calmly. “I’m here to help you carry the gown and the suits.” Irina rolled her eyes. “Unless you know something I don’t know, you are welcome to be here.” There was a surprise looks in the butler’s eyes as if he did know something that Irina didn’t. He forced a laugh. “What do you mean, Miss?” Irina gave him a stare through his soul. Her expression was unreadable, turning the butler more nervous. “I mean, I know how to carry them and how to walk home. So…” Bowing awkwardly, butler Rhys hurried back, clearly afraid if Irina threw another trap to fish information from him. To Irina, it was clear. Nieal had her followed wherever she went out of the house since the forest
Nieal stretched his hand to help Irina step out of the carriage. It was only the two of them in the carriage, Roman stubbornly decided he would go to the ball after finishing his work. Lord Hernandez himself welcoming Nieal and Irina and guided them to certain crowd where Nieal was expected to join. “Gentlemen,” Nieal greeted them. “Master Danieal.” They greeted back in unison. Their eyes on Irina. “How we should address the beautiful Lady?” Asked one of them baldly. Irina and Nieal mirrored a smile. He turned to look at Irina then to the men in front of them. “Irina, these are Lord Davis,” Nieal pointed with his eyes to the man in his left, then went on to the man next to Lord Davis and the next. “Lord Garrick, Lord Ashley, and Lord Timothy.” “Lady Irina.” The lords greeted Irina. Lord Hernandez joined them with a man and a woman in tow. The man bowed to Nieal in respect manner. “Master Danieal.” Followed by the woman. “Mr. and Mrs. Aquilla from—” Nieal told Irina. He let his
The next morning, Irina woke up late. Unlike her usual morning wake up time. It was because last night she got home late, like very late. Well, she liked hanging around with Lucas, both of them enjoyed each other company and lost the track of time. Her father and Nieal stood anxiously in the veranda, both with worry expression on their face. It was almost midnight when Lucas took her home. Nieal saw them first as they approached the house, there was something menacing in his looks towards Lucas. He turned to Roman, whispering something to his ear. “I’m in trouble.” Irina thought out loud. “Indeed, you are.” Roman agreed. He pulled Irina’s wrist so she stood behind him, then turned to face Lucas. “I’m terribly sorry, Mr. Roman. I should’ve asked your permission before—” “Save it!” Roman cut in. “You ill manner man. Go away! Before I call the guard and have you in prison.” Then Irina felt her wrist harshly pulled, she managed to give Lucas apologetic looks before Nieal slammed the
