Chapter 4

Elena's POV

The ropes pierced my wrists, but I didn't stop pulling on.

Every twist sent painful pain up my arms, but I still managed to hold on tightly.

Why?

Desperation was at its peak. After a prolonged period, I managed to loosen one of the ropes and proceeded to release the rest.

My chest vibrated while I sat in silence, staring at the reddened skin on my wrists.

Standing on my feet, I whispered, "I'm not going to become his prisoner."

My mind raced, attempting to plan my next action since I knew going through the door would be a terrible idea.

My eyes landed on the window and I realized they were not locked. Walking on tiptoes, I got to it, my heart racing in my chest as I inspected the hinges.

They squealed softly, but the window opened with ease.

The night air met against my face. I hesitated briefly before leaping onto the window. I got up onto the grass. I didn't wait to see the consequences of my jump because what would happen in a split second was.

Unforeseeable.

And I could risk it. I was outside, unharmed.

The whole house was like a maze. I tried moving around to find a way out, but somehow, it all looked confusing.

Voices began to sound from a direction, so I slowly followed them.

On getting closer, I recognised one of the voices.

It was him.

I froze when I hid behind a group of shrubs.

Despite having only heard two or three words since I got to know of his existence, his voice hit the spot that I could not forget.

I scanned the foliage from the spot I hid, my curiosity getting the best of me.

I noticed there were two of his men standing beside him.

The moonlight made his sharp features from a shadow, making him look even more intimidating.

There was another man, kneeling with chains binding him. He was restrained and his face was covered in blood.

“How dare you betray me? Now, I’m going to make you pay,” his intimidating voice rose, as he stared at the restrained man, who just chuckled.

“I was never loyal or faithful to you. You’re just... hardly your father and you will never be like him, so do not expect loyalty from him.”

With a firm grip on his jaw, His hand reached out to touch the ground.

“For generations, I’ve been faithful to this family,” he said with a grumbling voice, “But for you, at least….. Never to you.”

“My father is no longer here," he said with a low tone and fearful words. “Do you think it would be wise to serve him? I could kill you, and he wouldn't come to your schedule," he asked.

His smile was matched by the man's bloody teeth.

“He doesn't have to be here for his legacy to surpass yours. You'll never be him, Dominic. You'll never be up to your brother's child.”

There was a twinkling in Dominic's eyes, that of rage and pain, or maybe both.

He leaned towards one of his companions and extended his hand. His palm gripped a gun and my heart stopped instantly.

What was he planning to do?

Dominic retreated to the traitor, his actions deliberated, like a predator following its wounded victim.

"You've made the right decision," he said, grimacing. "Now, it's over. Say hi to the devil."

Before I could react, the sound of a gunshot broke through the air.

He collapsed and jerked his body. Blood accumulated beneath him, dissolving into the ground.'

A sudden scream came from my throat before I could stop it.

The sight of Dominic's eyes piercing through my skin was trouble.

I was motionless for a brief moment. I was held in place by his gaze, which was

Dominic's voice boomed in my direction, but I didn't look back. “Stop!”

Even though my lungs and heart were burning. The location of my running was unknown, and I had to pick up the paste.

Every second, I was followed by thunderous footsteps.

His shouts caused me to panic like a wave. "Get her!".

The pain in my ankle persisted, but I rushed to safety, neglecting the consequences.

In an instant, a robust arm stretched across my abdomen and pulled me down. I screamed, but the grip was firm.

My lips were filled with tears as Dominic growled in my ear.

I froze, shaking as he spun me around to face him.

He pressed his face against mine, “what the hell were you thinking?

I couldn't speak. My body was shaking so hard that my knees felt like they were about to burst.

With a tone that was not entirely menacing, his voice kept whispering. However, the danger was still present.

I nodded, tears spilling over.

Running his hand through his hair, Dominic cursed involuntarily.

His voice softened as he said, "You shouldn't have seen that."

My voice, which was barely more than a whisper, became louder. "You just killed someone! And this is all you have to say?”

His jaw compressed, and his grip on my arm loosened slightly.

“You did not even hesitate?” I continued, shaking in fear.

Once again, Dominic's tone was resolute: "Take her back to her room, and make sure she doesn't escape."

My feet’s were scraping against the cold floor, and we soon arrived back in the room I escaped from. I was thrown on the bed and I landed with a soft thud. The door slammed shut behind them, and I was left alone again. I trembled as what I had witnessed minutes ago crossed my mind. I stared at the ceiling as the memory enveloped me, I know Dominic was one brutal soul, but witnessing him actually kill someone without sympathy as if it were his daily routine was a show that will never leave my mind easily. Those cold words of his still echoed in my mind. “You shouldn't have seen that.” he'd muttered with a nonchalant expression as if it meant nothing. Seen what? The fucking brutally? The ruthlessness? The truth? Could that be my fate here as well? What if he decides to kill me too? The questions stormed my mi

Dominic’s words, his actions, the way he had killed that man without hesitation, the way the ground had absorbed his blood immediately, It all haunted me.I turned on the bed repeatedly, trying to find a comfortable position to rest, but my mind refused to keep quiet, I kept thinking about the day’s events. The thought of it all made me drown in a sea of despair. I didn't know how I was going to survive this trauma. Dominic’s words kept ringing in my head, “You’ll stay here until your good for nothing father settles me,” the thought of that sentence alone made my stomach turn because when exactly was my father going to settle Dominic? He wouldn't, even if he would, it would take forever, I might stay here for the rest of my life.

Dominic’s POVI walked into the room without even knocking to alert Elena I was coming in. This is my domain, I mean, why would I have to knock in my house before entering? I stared around the room searching for any signs of escape since that seemed to be her only goal here, which was a total waste of time. But then my eyes landed on her, Elena, my captive, my stubborn, strong headed captive. She was sitting right there on the bed, her back against the headboard, he seemed lost in thoughts as her eyes landed on me as well. I could see the fear in them, but then that spark of resistance that has always been there. I walked over to the bed, and sat down beside her, my weight causing the mattress to dip in. “Hey girl,” I muttered, my voice calm and steady. She didn't respond. She just kept staring at me, her face filled with an expression I couldn't quiet explain, and I knew she had a lot to say. I smiled, an amused smile. I liked her spirit. I liked the way she stood up to me eve

Dominic’s POVBut as I stood there lost in my thoughts, I couldn't get over the feeling that Elena was going to be a problem. She was a resilient one, and I needed to keep a close eye on her, make sure she discarded that stupid thoughts of escaping which would never happen. I smiled to myself as I walked out of the conference room. This was going to be fun. I was eagerly awaiting to see how she was going to continue acting stubborn. I was still lost in thought when a familiar voice called out to me.“Dominic?” she saidI turned to see Selena staring at me with all curiosity in her eyes.“Well, I went in to see your blonde with blue eyes this morning, She seemed naive and innocent though,” Selena said.Naive and innocent? Oh, that girl is nothing like that, I thought to myself. “She might just be the one you've been looking for all these years, don't you think so?” she teased.“Stop it, Selena, I told you that's not why she's here. Why are you so interested in her?,” I asked, wond

Elena’s POVI sat on the bed, my mind racing with thoughts of escape, all I could think about in this place was how to flee without taking a look back. I had to get out of here, no matter what it took, no matter how many times I would have to try, no matter how many times I was going to fail, I choose not to give up.I would go continue trying, and maybe he could let me go if he sees my efforts.‘And what makes you think so?’ a tiny little voice in my head spoke. And that's when I realized myself, what the fuck actually made me think that Dominic was going to let me go just because I was trying? He could even get more angry and take out the anger he felt towards my father against me. The thought of being trapped in this house at the mercy of a man who seemed to take pleasure in my fear was unbearable and totally mind draining. I thought back to the conversation I had with the lady who had brought me food. She seemed very kind and warm-hearted, and I wondered if I could trust her si

Elena’s POV“Where did you expect yourself to be? Oh… you were expecting yourself to burst out on the street? What makes you think I’ll leave an escape route in my house? You’re not going anywhere, baby girl,” Dominic said, pushing off himself from the wall.“You’re mine now, and you’ll do exactly what I say at all times.”I took a step back, “I’m not yours,” I said, trying to get away from him, but he just laughed. His laughter a cold, threatening sound that filled the air. “You can't escape me, Baby girl,” he said, his eyes fixed on mine. “I own you, and you’ll do exactly what I tell you to, regardless of what it is or guess what? You’re going to suffer the consequences.”I felt a chill run down my spine as he took a step closer to me, but I still summoned up my courage to talk back at him. “Point of correction, you don’t own me, and you never will,” I fired back. I knew I was trapped, and I knew I had to think fast if I was going to survive, I had to do my best.I stood there fr

Dominic’s POVI chuckled, amused by Elena’s bravery and audacity to speak to me in such manner, but she’s also a naive little girl. Thinking she could outsmart me has to be the most stupid and dumbest thought ever. I have every single information about her, every single step she takes in this house, and she must be stupid into thinking she can actually outsmart me. “Do you understand what I just said girl?” I asked, giving her that scary boss expression. But instead of answering me she turned and walked into the same path she came from in anger. I could tell she was probably frustrated and was going back to her room. I laughed again, shaking my head as I’d enjoyed the look of frustration on her pretty little face. “You seem so interested in her, unlike other prisoners,” a familiar voice spoke.I turned to see Selena behind me, she’s been watching me all along. And I was beginning to get pissed by this recent attitude of hers. “What the fuck are you talking about, Selena?” I aske

Selena’s POVI watched closely as Dominic turned and walked away after ranting about how I should mind my business and all that, his broad shoulders disappearing into the shadows. I couldn't help but smile to myself, “this was so fun to watch,” I murmured to myself, as I felt nothing but satisfaction seeing the awkward look on his face when I teased him about Elena, his captive. Not only that, but I had finally gotten under his skin, and I knew it. This was one cool weakness of his that I had just discovered. I had seen the flicker of emotions in his eyes, unlike the Dominic I’d known all these years. A hint of feelings that he couldn’t hide this time around. Dominic was a master when it comes to control, a man who always kept his emotions in check and unnoticeable, no matter how much you try to look out for hints. But I had seen something in him today, something that made me think that maybe, just perhaps, I could use this to my fucking advantage.Perhaps I could use this to m

I repeated and Selene nodded twice. “‎That's what I believe." selene affirmed. “She’s probably pushing your buttons, trying to get on your soft side so when you don't notice, she'll do what she's planning internally. What she harbors in mind." ‎"Hmph," I said thinking, and Selene smiled. She probably thought in her head that if I gave her an inch, she was going to go a mile and keep adding fuel to fire so, Elena wouldn't be in my favour, but then, the conversation that seemed to be going North in her favour went south very fast. ‎"What do you take me for?" I asked and Selene was caught off guard by the question."Uhm, what do you mean by that, Dominic?" She asked, genuinely confused. ‎ ‎"Exactly what I said. What do you take me for?" Elena POVThe first kiss was totally unexpected. And even after it, I didn't know what I was going to expect from Dominic or even myself. There were too many emotions involved for me to make the right call on the particular reaction I was going to make. Or Dominic was going to make either. But then he does this—an unexpected after a previous unexpected. This kiss wasn't as soft as the previous one. This time, I could feel there was more intention and desire behind it.This time, it was more raw and passionate and I could even say clumsy. I had closed my eyes, feeling just sizzles in my body while his tongue searched around in my mouth. And in this moment, my body surprised me the most because it wasn't doing anything I thought it was supposed to do. That is, kick against it, stop him from tasting me, and get angry even.We continued to kiss for a minute before he finally dislodged his lips from mine, and I was surprised by how I was trying to catch my breath. I didn't think a single thought ran through my mind before I rushed over to the side of Dominic's bed, kneeling on the ground as I felt my worry spike within me.“Dominic!” I said, my worry now very evident on my face as my eyes still remained locked on his wounded arm.I gently grabbed his arm and examined it. To me, it seemed that the wound, which was already wrapped before, had reopened again, and that was because there were two shades of blood, with one darker than the other. It must have been from when he stood up abruptly from the bed and told Selene to leave, I think.“What happened to you while you were away? How did you get this wound?” I asked, hungry for answers. She exhaled in relief and faced me with her earlier cold expression.“I asked you, why did you come inside?” she said, but her tone was low and stern as well.“Why wouldn’t I? I was very curious. I didn’t understand what you meant by your statement and again, you didn’t come out, so I didn’t know what to do and I couldn’t keep waiting outside,” I replied, also keeping my voice low.“Well, the best thing for you to have done is to go back to your room and wait till Dominic has decided to go to his office or somewhere you c

Elena POVI didn’t sleep much last night. In my head, my conflicting thoughts were too much of a bother to allow me to lie down and get up to three hours of rest and so, I ended up sleeping outside for a few minutes before I woke up again. From the way I saw it, it felt as if the night just went by in minutes. All this while, I was thinking but yet, I still wasn't able to find a suitable answer to settle my worries. I sighed dejectedly and got on my feet, deciding it was better to go back to my room. There was no reason for me to keep answering questions with questions. I had to try and get some sleep, even if it was just a little. The soft ticking of the big clock in the hallway was the only sound accompanying my racing thoughts. There was something wrong, something off. And I could feel it.Every corner of this mansion seemed to carry hidden details of secrets I wasn't seeing. It felt like betrayal and a blend of other eerie things were going on from beyond the facade of it all, an

And I need to, before things get worse than they already are.“Boss.” Gabe called my attention, and I turned to him with an angry look. Not necessarily because he was disturbing me—I was just mad at everything right now.“I'm sorry, boss, but what do we do with her now?” Gabe asked me, and I shifted my gaze from him to Johanna, who still had a pool of tears streaming down her face. Her eyes were still locked on her brother’s lifeless body, and I sighed dejectedly and walked in front of Johan, covering his eyes before I shifted my gaze to her, shielding the body from her sight as I said,“This wasn’t how things were supposed to go.” I paused, looking at her, but she had shut her eyes, still biting on Gabe’s hand, who seemed to be enduring the pain. I signaled to him to let go, and he took his hand off her mouth. She kept weeping

It would make things easier for me, easier to get information from Johan when he knew what was truly at stake. He had a look of desperation on his face, and in a sharp move, he turned toward the door. But he didn't take two steps before the man already behind him slammed the door shut. The impact made Johan fidget. Dominic POV I sat behind my desk in the study room, my knuckles pressed into my temple, while, with my other hand, I flipped through a document I wasn't bent on reading. I wasn't concentrating on the document, not really. Not since that damn message came in. A set of knocks on the door was easily enough to draw my attention and my eyes left the document. “Come in,” I said, and the next second, James walked in with an expression that made me curious. Clasping my hands together, I asked, “What is it?” “We found him,” James said. My eyes narrowed as I proceeded to ask, “Where?” “He’s currently at an abandoned duplex towards the southern part from here. It shouldn't be up to a two-hour drive. The man’s name is Johan. From what I've gathered, he works at a computer shop. Not too far from where he lives. He’s got a sister—just got discharged from a hospital.” I raised an eyebrow and James continued. “Cancer. Most likely in its late stage, from what we can tell.” My gaze left James
