Emilia’s POV

I stared at Alaric’s text for the millionth time since I received it yesterday, my heart pounding hard in my chest as tears filled my eyes.

“Yeah, that’d be good. Thanks.” He had replied, but that wasn’t what made me want to cry. But it was the realization that I made this morning that made my eyes sting. I was in love with him.

I didn’t know when it happened. Maybe it was gradual, like water eroding rock, wearing down my defenses bit by bit until I was exposed and vulnerable. Or maybe it was sudden—like the moment you realize you’re standing on the edge of a cliff and the ground beneath you is crumbling. I can’t pinpoint the exact second, but somewhere along the way, I fell in love with Alaric.

The realization hit me like a punch to the gut as I sat alone in the kitchen. The house was usually quiet. All the workers were probably taking a break. I was nuring a cup of coffee, staring out of the window at the garden but not really seeing it. My mind was stuck replying e

75Emilia’s POV My eyes met with Alaric’s across the room for the umpteenth time today. And I was sure he could tell what was running through my head.God.When did I turn to this horny mess that couldn’t even control myself? I never knew that being with Alaric could be so…addicting.I rubbed my thighs together, taking my eyes off him and trying to hard to focus on what Francesca was doing but it was probing to be fruitless. Fuck I needed him right now.Without thinking of it, I got up abruptly, turning to him and mustering the most serious and professional look I could. I walked to him, not caring that he was seated with his most high ranking men and discussing work matters. “I need to speak with you,” I murmured quietly, meeting Allesio’s narrowed eyes and looking away as fast as I could.“Handle it,” Alaric said to his second in command a he got up from the chair, motioning for me to follow him. We went up the stairs and I had no doubt that he was leading me to his office. But I c

76Emilia’s POV I found myself standing in front of Matteo’s door this morning, clutching a bag of pastries like it was my lifeline. It’s wasn’t particularly because I missed him that I was here today. I did miss him, but that wasn’t the exact reason. It was that I felt like I was drowning and my mind was an undeniable mess of my emotions.I knocked the door once, waiting for him to come and open the door. Matteo opened the door almost immediately, his face lighting up in a way that only reminded me how much I missed him. “Emmy!” he exclaimed, pulling me into a tight hug before I could even step inside.“Hey, Teo,” I murmured into his shoulder, and for a moment, I let myself relax into the comfort of my brother’s embrace. I felt like my mind was finally going calm after all this whole just because I was in his presence. He pulled back, holding me at arm’s length to give me one of his patented Matteo once-overs. “You look tired,” he said, frowning. “What’s going on? And don’t tell me

77Emilia’s POVA shiver ran through my body at the way Alaric touched me and my thighs clenched in anticipation. I couldn’t believe I was already getting wet at such simple touch. He kissed my neck and ran his fingers through my hair. “You look beautiful,” he muttered, kissing my hair.“Thank you,” I answered, my cheeks turning pink as I eyed the hoodie and sweatpants I was in.“Take off your clothes,” he added, kissing my neck one more time and he walked behind me. He took off my hood and began unbraiding my hair carefully.“To take off my clothes,” I began slowly. “I need you to leave my hair,” I reminded him. My hair was in two cornrows and I didn’t want him getting them all rough and tangled. He unbraided the first cornrow and moved to the other one without a word. He unbraided that one too and ruffled my hair slightly. “I love your hair better when it’s let down,” He murmured against my neck and then I felt him take a step back. “Take off your clothes.”I gulped as I took off my

78Emilia’s POVI got up from the bed, stretching slightly. I forced myself to get off the bed. My mind wouldn’t stop going to Francesca and it made me uneasy. I needed to check on her first to make sure she was fine before I did anything else.I wrapped my robe around my body, walking out of my room and rushing to her room. Pushing open the door to her room, I froze in the doorway. Francesca was lying in bed, her little frame curled under the covers, her face flushed a deep red. Sweat clung to her brow, and her breathing was shallow and uneven. My heart dropped.“Francesca?” I called softly, moving closer. She stirred but didn’t open her eyes. When I pressed the back of my hand to her forehead, a wave of heat radiated off her skin. She was burning up.“Francesca,” I said again, my voice shaking now as I gently shook her shoulder. She opened her eyes halfway, her usual bright brown gaze dull and glassy.“Mommy…” she croaked, her voice weak and scratchy.“It’s okay, sweetheart,” I said

79Alaric’s POV I’ve faced countless threats in my life. Guns aimed at my head. Betrayals by people I thought I could trust. Enemies clawing at the edges of my empire, waiting for a moment of weakness. But nothing—NOTHING—had ever terrified me as much as seeing Francesca lying helpless in that hospital bed.The sterile smell of antiseptic burned my nose as I sat in the uncomfortable chair outside her room. My hands were clasped tightly, my knuckles white. The usual iron control I prided myself on felt like it was slipping. I couldn’t stop replaying the image of her small, flushed face, the way her body had burned with fever when I held her. She’d felt so fragile, and for the first time, I realized just how powerless I was when it came to her health. What if this was something serious? What if I couldn’t protect her from this? The thought clawed at my chest like a wild animal, threatening to rip me apart. Francesca was everything to me—my light, my reason for holding it all together.

80Emilia’s POV I didn’t know why my mind kept going to Alaric, but it wouldn’t stop. I remembered how vulnerable he was in the hospital earlier today, and how he had kissed me without caring that anyone could have seen.I got up from my bed, sliding my feet into my flip flops and walking out my my room. I found myself in front of his office where I knew he was, probably going crazy at the fact that Francesca wasn’t under his roof. All I wanted was to comfort him.I walked into his office and closed the door behind me. Just as I expected, he was pacing the length of his office but he paused when he noticed me.“Hey,” I began, feeling awkward and stupid for coming here in the first place when he hadn’t called for me. What if he chased me out? That would only make me feel more like shit.He said nothing, but his face softened a bit as he watched me. I took a bold step, going closer to him and standing in front of him. “I know you’re going crazy about Francesca right now. But she’s goin

81Alaric’s POV The fear that had been hanging around me for says lifted the moment Francesca was finally discharged from the hospital. Watching her walk out hand in hand with Emilia, he’d cheeks regaining some of it’s usual color, I felt a relief so profound it was almost painful. My little girl was coming home and the house wouldn’t feel like a void anymore. The ride back was quiet. Francesca sat snug between Emilia and me in the back seat, her small body leaning against Emilia’s side as if that was the only place she felt completely safe. I kept glancing at her, watching the rise and fall of her chest, reassuring myself she was really okay. Every so often, she would catch my gaze and smile faintly, and I’d reach out to squeeze her tiny hand.“You excited to sleep in your own bed again, principessa?” I asked, breaking the silence. She nodded, her voice still a little soft. “And I want to play with Mr. Snuggles.”Mr. Snuggles—her battered old teddy bear. I smiled despite myself. “He

82Allesio’s POVThe music thumped through the club like a second heartbeat, the kind of bass that seemed to pulse in your chest and drown out everything else. It wasn’t really my scene, but I’d promised Alaric I’d come out with him tonight. Something about needing a change of scenery, a chance to let off some steam. Not that Alaric was exactly a party animal. He sat at the private booth we’d reserved, nursing his whiskey and scanning the room like it was just another battlefield. Old habits die hard, I guess. For him, it was impossible to relax completely—even here.“Why did I even bother dragging you out?” I asked, leaning back in my seat and watching him with an amused smirk.“I’m here, aren’t I?” he said, raising an eyebrow.“Physically, sure. Mentally? You’re probably running through surveillance reports in your head.”He didn’t respond, which only proved my point. I shook my head, taking a sip of my drink. Sometimes I wondered if Alaric even remembered how to have fun. The guy c

310Matteo’s POVI waited until lunch. Not because I was nervous. Definitely not. I just figured if I approached her too early, it would seem desperate. And I wasn’t desperate. But as I walked toward her office, a coffee in one hand, a file in the other — a completely real, work-related file, by the way — I felt something tighten in my chest. Like I was heading into enemy territory without armor.Gianna’s door was open. She was at her desk, typing something with the kind of focus that made it clear she had no interest in interruptions. Or people. Or, possibly, happiness in general.I knocked on the doorframe anyway. “Boss.”She barely looked up. “Matteo.”Not Matt. Not Teo. Not even an annoyed sigh. Just my full government name like I was any other employee who needed something from her.Okay. Cool. Professional. I could be professional.I stepped inside, setting the coffee on her desk. “Thought you could use this. Since, you know, you used to actually enjoy caffeine before you left.”

309Matteo’s POV The office was buzzing the moment Gianna walked in.Not the kind of buzz that came with excitement. No. This was a different kind—muted whispers, stolen glances, people suddenly remembering they had work to do when she passed by. The kind of buzz that meant no one had expected her to show up today. Hell, I hadn’t expected her to show up today. And yet, there she was.Gianna Lorenzo, back in her corner office like she’d never left.Only, she wasn’t the same.I watched from my desk as she strode across the floor, her heels clicking against the tiles in sharp, deliberate beats. The last time I saw her, she was different. Softer, warmer, laughing at my stupid jokes even when she rolled her eyes. This version of her didn’t even glance at anyone. Didn’t offer a single smile. Just walked straight to her office, shut the door, and stayed there.Like a ghost returning to haunt its own life.“She’s… different,” Leo muttered beside me, tapping his pen against his desk.I didn’t

308Rosa’s POV The morning light streamed through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the apartment. I sat on the couch, nursing a cup of coffee, my fingers drumming against the ceramic. I’d come back to the states three days ago to finally pack up and move back to Italy. Across from me, Emilia stared, her lips pursed like she was trying to figure out how to respond to what I’d just told her.“You’re leaving,” she finally said, and it wasn’t a question.I nodded. “Yeah. I think it’s time.”She exhaled, leaning back against the couch. “Time for what? To run away? To bury yourself in business deals and pretend like you don’t care?”I rolled my eyes. “I’m not running away.”Emilia shot me a pointed look. “Rosa, please.”I sighed, setting my cup down. “I need a break. And I need to be there for my father. He’s been handling everything on his own for too long. It’s about time I stepped up.”She folded her arms. “And Allesio?”My stomach clenched at the mention of his name. I forced mys

307Allesio’s POV The whiskey burned on the way down, but it wasn’t enough to numb the ache in my chest. Nothing was. The dimly lit bar around me hummed with the usual noise—clinking glasses, quiet chatter, the occasional burst of laughter that grated on my nerves. It was ironic how the world kept spinning, people kept living, and I was stuck in this endless loop of regret and self-destruction.I swirled the amber liquid in my glass, staring at it like it held the answers to my misery. Maybe if I drank enough, I’d finally stop seeing her face every time I closed my eyes. Maybe I’d stop hearing her voice in my head, the way she told me to stop chasing her like I was nothing more than an annoying shadow she couldn’t shake off.The bar stool next to me scraped against the floor, but I didn’t look up. I already knew who it was. Only one person would be stupid enough to come find me when I clearly wanted to be alone.Alaric sighed, loud and unimpressed. “How long are you going to do this?

306Rosa’s POV The jet lag hadn’t hit me yet, but I was already very exhausted and felt done for the day.Italy looked the same as it always did—beautiful, timeless, like it existed in a different universe from the chaos I had left behind. I inhaled the crisp evening air as I stepped out of the sleek black car, the grand estate standing wide in front of me. The Smith family mansion. My father’s empire. The guards stationed outside barely blinked at my arrival, nodding respectfully as I walked past them. I had never lived here full-time, but it was still home in some ways. A piece of me, whether I wanted to admit it or not.The grand doors opened before I could even knock, and there he was—Romano Smith. The infamous Don. My father. He looked the same, even though it seemed he had grown older since the last time I saw him. He was dressed in his usual crisp three-piece suit, his silver hair combed back, his sharp eyes studying me the way they always did, like he was seeing everything I

305Allesio’s POV I couldn’t live without her.Not just in the poetic, tortured way people talk about when they lose someone they love. No, this was worse. This was physical, a gnawing emptiness in my chest that only got worse with each passing day. I had tried everything to forget her—drinking, fighting, drowning myself in work. But nothing helped. Nothing came close to filling the void she left behind.I had been a coward. A liar. A manipulative bastard. And now, I was paying the price for it.“Are you even listening to me?” Alaric’s voice cut through my thoughts, his irritation clear.I looked up from my drink, barely focusing on him. “Not really.”Alaric sighed, rubbing his temples. “I said, let her go.”I scoffed. “Like you ever let Emilia go?”His jaw tightened. “That’s different.”“Is it?” I leaned forward. “Because I remember a time when she hated your guts too. When she wanted nothing to do with you.”“And I gave her time,” he shot back. “I didn’t chase her down like a despe

I should have ignored Emilia’s gentle nudging, should have turned off my phone, should have stayed curled up in bed with a book I wasn’t really reading. Because now, standing in the grand foyer of this ridiculous charity event, I felt like an idiot.I walked away from Allesio like he was nothing. Like seeing him after all this time didn’t shake me down to my bones. Like the way he said my name didn’t make my throat tight. But I did it. I walked away. And I should have kept walking. Should have gotten into a car and gone home. But no. I needed a damn drink first.I made my way to the bar, ordering a glass of champagne, something crisp and dry that wouldn’t sit too heavy on my tongue. Something to remind me that I was fine. I was moving on.And then I saw her.Tall. Elegant. Brunette. Draped in a silk gown that screamed old money and good taste. She laughed at something he said, her pe

303Allesio’s POV The car rolled to a smooth stop in front of the grand hotel, its towering glass windows reflecting the golden glow of the city lights. I adjusted my cufflinks, barely listening to Alaric giving instructions to one of his men over the phone. Another pointless charity event, another night pretending to care about something other than the mess I’d made of my life.Inside, the ballroom was dripping in luxury—crystal chandeliers, waiters in crisp uniforms weaving through the crowd with silver trays, and the endless murmur of people pretending they weren’t all rotten beneath their polished exteriors. I grabbed a glass of whiskey from a passing waiter and took a slow sip, scanning the room with idle disinterest. And then I saw her.Rosa.My grip on the glass tightened. For a second, I thought I was seeing things, some cruel trick my exhausted mind was playing on me. But no, it was her. 302Allesio’s POV The whiskey burned its way down my throat, but the ache in my chest didn’t ease. It never did, no matter how many glasses I downed, no matter how many fists I threw at nameless men in dark alleyways. I was becoming reckless, but I didn’t give a damn. Maybe if I pushed hard enough, if I destroyed myself enough, the guilt would stop gnawing at me.It never did.“You look like shit,” Alaric said, dropping into the seat across from me in the dimly lit bar. “And you smell worse.”I smirked, lifting my glass in a mock toast. “Cheers to that.”His jaw ticked. “This is getting pathetic.”“What’s pathetic is you tracking me down like a goddamn babysitter.” I tossed back another drink and signaled for another. The bartender hesitated, eyes flicking to Alaric, but I shot him a glare. He poured it. Good man.Alaric exhaled sharply, his patience thinning. “You’re fighting like you’ve got nothing to lose.”I chuckled darkly. “Because I don’t.”“That’s bullshit, and you know it.”
