Emilia’s POV

“Well,” I said, exhaling slowly, “at least now the marriage can finally go through without worrying about all this hatred between you and Alaric.” I looked at Alonso, expecting—no, hoping—for some sign that he agreed. That this war, this endless, exhausting war, has really ended.

But he just sat there, stiff as a statue, arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable.

Then he said, “I still don’t support this marriage.”

I blinked. Laughed, even. Because surely, after everything, he was joking.

“You’re serious?” I asked, the laughter dying in my throat.

I thought we were finally past this.

For the first time in what felt like forever, I allowed myself to breathe, to believe that maybe I could live normally without worrying that they hated each other.

But apparently, I had been a little too optimistic.

“You’re joking,” I said flatly, staring at my father. “Tell me you’re joking.”

Alonso met my gaze, unmoved. “I’m not.”

I blinked. “You just spent hours unraveling

284Emilia’s POVI exhaled, slow and steady, forcing my heartbeat to settle. My hands were still curled into fists at my sides, but the sharp edges of my anger had dulled, leaving me very exhausted.Alonso had gone quiet. Alaric, too. They were both thinking of the ultimatum, I was sure of it.I wasn’t going to repeat myself. I had laid it all out—either they figured out a way to tolerate each other, or they lost me. I meant every word.I wrapped my arms around my stomach, my body still thrumming from the adrenaline. My child’s future was at stake. I refused to let them grow up trapped between two men who refused to let go of the past. Finally, Alonso inhaled sharply, rubbing a hand over his face. “So that’s it? You’re threatening to cut me out of your life unless I… what? Accept this marriage? Accept him?” His voice was rough, tinged with something I couldn’t quite place.I held his gaze, unwavering. “Yes.”Alonso let out a bitter, humorless laugh. “You expect me to suddenly be okay

285Alaric’s POVI was going to kill Emilia.Slowly. Painfully. And with great satisfaction.“You’re overreacting,” she said, not even looking at me as she fixed her earrings in the mirror.I let out a humorless laugh, crossing my arms. “You’re dragging me to have dinner with Alonso. That’s not overreacting. That’s a death wish.”Emilia sighed, finally turning to face me. “He agreed to the wedding, didn’t he?”I scowled. “Begrudgingly. There’s a difference.”She gave me a pointed look. “Alaric, he’s trying. And if you don’t at least pretend to try too, I swear to God—”I held up a hand. “Yeah, yeah. You’ll cut me out of your life, blah blah.” I let my head fall back. “Jesus. You’re really enjoying making me suffer, aren’t you?”Emilia smirked. “You have no idea.”I regretted everything the second we stepped into Alonso’s house. He barely spared me a glance as he gestured for us to sit at the long dining table, his expression set in that usual unreadable scowl of his. The man had two m

286Emilia’s POVI didn’t speak to him.Not when we left Alonso’s house. Not in the car. Not when we got home.I walked straight past him, up the stairs, and into our bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me. I wasn’t even sure why I was so angry. Maybe it was the betrayal. Maybe it was the exhaustion. Maybe it was the fact that every time I thought I finally knew everything about the man I loved, another secret came crawling out of the dark.I paced the room, my thoughts tangled in knots.Francesca.Not his daughter. Not biologically, at least.Dominic’s.And I had saved her. Me. Three years ago, without even realizing it.A knock sounded at the door. “Emilia.”I ignored him.The handle turned, and he stepped inside cautiously, as if he thought I might throw something at his head. A tempting idea.“Emilia, please.” His voice was quiet, tired. “Can we talk?”I folded my arms. “Oh, now you want to talk?”His jaw tensed. “I always wanted to tell you.”“Then why didn’t you?” I shot back.

287Alaric’s POVEmilia had been on my case all morning.“You need to talk to Allesio,” she said for the tenth time, arms crossed as she leaned against the kitchen counter. “I don’t know what happened between you two, but this sulking thing you’re doing? It’s getting old.”I didn’t look up from the file in front of me. “I’m not sulking.”“You’re brooding,” she corrected. “And being dramatic.”I exhaled sharply, flipping a page just to look busy. “I don’t need to do anything, Emilia.”“Alaric.”“Emilia,” I mimicked, still not looking up.She smacked the back of my head.“Ow—”“Go talk to him,” she ordered. “You’re going to forgive him eventually, so just do it now and save me the headache.”I tossed the pen onto the table, rubbing my temples. “You don’t get it.”“I would if you actually told me what the hell happened,” she shot back. “But no, you just want to stomp around and glare at him like a five-year-old who had his toy stolen.”I narrowed my eyes at her. “This is bigger than that

288Emilia’s POV*TWO MONRHS LATER*I groaned, flopping back onto the couch in frustration. “Why did I think this was a good idea?”Rosa smirked, tossing a handful of tiny white pearls into my lap. “Because you love Alaric, and apparently, that means torturing yourself with a wedding.”“Right?” I grabbed one of the pearls and flicked it at her. “Seriously, why is this so hard? It’s just a dress.”“Just a dress?” She gasped, clutching her chest dramatically. “Excuse me? It is the dress, Emilia. The one you’ll remember forever. The one you’ll look back on in pictures and either sob in happiness or cringe in regret.”“Okay, thanks for the pressure,” I muttered, rubbing my temples.Rosa grabbed my arm, yanking me up. “Enough whining. We’re finding your dress today. Period.”“Fine,” I grumbled. “But if I die in a pile of lace, tell Alaric I love him.”She dragged me toward the changing rooms, rolling her eyes. “You’re so dramatic.”Two hours later, I was so close to setting an entire brida

289Emilia’s POV.*Two weeks later*I stared at my reflection in the mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back. The lace of my wedding dress hugged my body perfectly, intricate floral patterns trailing down to the long, flowing train. The veil was pinned neatly into my hair, soft curls cascading down my shoulders. My makeup was flawless, but my eyes—my eyes gave me away. They were filled with unshed tears. I felt so fucking overwhelmed.I was getting married today.I was about to walk down the aisle and promise forever to a man who had completely, irrevocably changed my life.“You’re thinking too much,” Rosa’s voice broke through my thoughts.I turned to her, blinking. “Huh?”She smirked, hands on her hips. “I know that look. You’re overthinking, probably panicking a little. Don’t.”“I’m not panicking.”“You’re literally gripping the dresser like you’re about to run.”I glanced down at my hands, fingers curled tightly around the wooden surface. Okay, maybe she had a point.“It

290Rosa’s POVI hated overthinking. It was exhausting, annoying, and worst of all—it was usually right.I told myself lately I wouldn’t do it with Allesio. I wouldn’t pick apart his words, analyze his tone, or decode his every blink like some detective looking for clues to a crime that hadn’t happened yet.But tonight?Tonight, my instincts were screaming. And the worst part? I couldn’t even pinpoint why.I sat on the kitchen stool, watching him move around like nothing was wrong. His back was to me, broad shoulders flexing under his black shirt as he flipped something in the pan. Chicken, I thought vaguely.“You’ve been quiet all evening,” Allesio said without turning around. His voice was casual, too casual. “Did I do something?”My stomach twisted, but I forced a small smile. “No. Just tired.”It wasn’t a lie, technically. I was tired. Tired of this nagging feeling I had been pushing down all week.Something was off.It wasn’t anything obvious—not enough for someone else to notice

291Rosa’s POVI lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind replaying the dinner conversation like a broken record. You’re overthinking. That’s what he’d said. Like I was imagining things. Like I was some paranoid girlfriend who saw problems where there weren’t any.Maybe I was.Or maybe my instincts were screaming at me for a reason. The door creaked open, and I knew it was him before he even said a word.I didn’t move, didn’t turn to look at him. I was still too mad for that.“Rosa.” His voice was soft. Careful. Like he was approaching a wild animal.I still didn’t say anything. The bed dipped as he sat beside me. A beat of silence passed before I felt his fingers trace a slow path down my arm. “Talk to me, princess.”I exhaled sharply. “What’s there to talk about?”He sighed. “You know I hate when we fight.”I turned my head, finally meeting his gaze. “Then maybe you shouldn’t give me reasons to be upset.”His lips pressed into a thin line. “I’m not—” He stopped himself, shook his

302Allesio’s POV The whiskey burned its way down my throat, but the ache in my chest didn’t ease. It never did, no matter how many glasses I downed, no matter how many fists I threw at nameless men in dark alleyways. I was becoming reckless, but I didn’t give a damn. Maybe if I pushed hard enough, if I destroyed myself enough, the guilt would stop gnawing at me.It never did.“You look like shit,” Alaric said, dropping into the seat across from me in the dimly lit bar. “And you smell worse.”I smirked, lifting my glass in a mock toast. “Cheers to that.”His jaw ticked. “This is getting pathetic.”“What’s pathetic is you tracking me down like a goddamn babysitter.” I tossed back another drink and signaled for another. The bartender hesitated, eyes flicking to Alaric, but I shot him a glare. He poured it. Good man.Alaric exhaled sharply, his patience thinning. “You’re fighting like you’ve got nothing to lose.”I chuckled darkly. “Because I don’t.”“That’s bullshit, and you know it.”

301Rosa’s POVThe restaurant was nice. Upscale but not overly pretentious, the kind of place where the waiters wore crisp white shirts but didn’t look like they wanted to strangle themselves with their ties. Candlelight flickered across the polished wood table, catching the deep red of my wine as I swirled it in my glass. Across from me, Jason—or was it Jacob?—smiled, teeth perfectly straight, dimples popping like he had been genetically engineered to charm.I smiled back. It wasn’t hard. He was attractive, well-dressed, and had that effortless confidence that came with knowing you were objectively good-looking. He was saying something about his job—finance, obviously—and I nodded like I was interested. I should have been interested.Instead, my mind drifted to the last time I had sat across from a man at a restaurant. The heat in Allesio’s gaze, the way he had leaned back in his chair like he owned the whole damn place—and maybe he did. The way his hand had rested on my thigh under

300Allesio’s POV The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Alaric sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his jaw clenched, fingers drumming impatiently against the polished wood. Around him, his most trusted men stood at attention, awaiting orders.“She only took her car and even that’s untraceable. No flights booked in her name. No trace of her anywhere,” one of the men reported.Alaric exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “I don’t give a damn how much it costs—find them. If they’re hiding, make them regret it.”I sat back in my chair, rubbing a hand down my face. This was getting out of control. I had been barely holding it together as it was, knowing Rosa had shut me out completely. The only thing keeping me from losing it entirely was the fact that Alaric was just as on edge. Maybe more. He was spiraling without Emilia, and I couldn’t blame him. It had been days. No calls. No messages. Nothing. And with Emilia being pregnant? Yeah, he was losing his mind.

299Rosa’s POV. I tried to keep it together. God knows I did. But no amount of pretending, no amount of running, could stop the inevitable. The moment we got back from our trip and crashed out at an hotel nearby, I felt it creeping in. The pain, the longing, the absolute stupidity of my heart. I hated the way I reached for my phone only to remember I’d blocked him, the way my chest tightened at the sight of a dark-haired man on the street, the way I found myself rereading our old texts like a fool.It all came crashing down on me right now.We were sitting on the bed, a ridiculous reality show playing in the background. She had a bowl of popcorn in her lap, her focus barely on me, but she must’ve sensed something was off because she suddenly turned to me with narrowed eyes.“You’ve been weird since we got back,” she said. “What’s wrong?”I shook my head. “Nothing.”She scoffed. “Right. And I suddenly am not angry with my husband.”That made me crack a smile, but it didn’t last. I pre

298Rosa’s POV. The sun was already high in the sky, glistening off the infinity pool as I stretched out on a lounge chair, soaking in every last second of this trip. Our trip. The trip that Emilia and I had taken to escape, to breathe, to exist without the weight of betrayal pressing down on our chests.Emilia sat beside me, oversized sunglasses covering most of her face, her drink in hand as she let out a satisfied sigh. “I’m not ready to go back.”I groaned in agreement. “Same. Reality sucks. We should just stay here forever, become beach bums.”She turned to me with a smirk. “Tempting. But I think Alaric would burn this entire resort down looking for me. And Allesio...” she trailed off, hesitating.I tensed but forced myself to act unfazed. “Allesio is the least of my concerns.”She didn’t believe me, obviously, but she let it slide. “Fine, fine. No men talk. Today is all about us, and we are going to make the most of it.”“Agreed,” I said, clinking my glass against hers. “One la

Please.”I hung up, sighing as I rubbed my hand down my face. This was getting ridiculous. She had shut me out completely—her number wasn’t going through, my texts weren’t delivering, and she was nowhere to be found. It had been two days. Two days of absolute silence. Two days of losing my goddamn mind. And to make things worse, Alaric wasn’t doing any better.“Where the fuck did she go?” Alaric snapped, storming into the room, his phone gripped so tightly his knuckles had turned white.“Still nothing?” I asked, already knowing the answer. His jaw clenched. “No. Nothing. She’s not answering her phone, and none of my men have any clue where she and Rosa went. They just disappeared.”I let out a low whistle. “Damn. You really pissed her off, huh?”He shot me a glare. “Shut up. Like you’re any better? Ros

I kept quiet, not knowing what to say to that, I just continued watching her walk up and down the room.I watched from her bed, one leg tucked underneath me, the other bouncing slightly. “You’re going to burn a hole in that floor if you keep pacing.”She ignored me, muttering to herself. “I can’t just sit here and wait for him to come back like nothing happened.”“You could slap him again.” I shrugged. “That seemed satisfying.”Her lips twitched, but she stayed serious. “No, I want to do something that actually gets under his skin.”I smirked. “Emilia, you are under his skin.”She rolled her eyes but didn’t deny it.I tilted my head. “What exactly are you trying to do here?”She stopped pacing and faced me. “I want him to go crazy w

295Rosa’s POVI pushed open the door to my apartment, and the silence hit me like a punch to the stomach. It was the kind of silence that mocked me—taunting, suffocating. The kind that made it impossible to pretend everything was fine.I dropped my bag on the floor and let out a breath. I had spent the night at a hotel, needing to be anywhere but here. But now, standing in my own space, I realized that “home” didn’t feel like home anymore. Not with his scent still lingering in the air.Not with memories of him trapped in the walls.I walked to my bedroom, my heart pounding as I opened the closet. And there it was—the evidence that he had been here, that he had once belonged to me.His shirts. His jackets. His stupid, expensive cologne still clinging to the fabric.I yanked a navy-blue dress shirt off the hanger, my fingers gripping the soft material like it was personally responsible for my heartbreak. Then, slowly, I knelt and pulled out the shoebox under my bed. What did I expect after all that had happened this morning?Alaric walked ahead, rolling his shoulders like he was already ready for another fight. “I need a drink,” he muttered. Then we saw her.Emilia.She was sitting in the center of the room, back straight, hands clasped in her lap. Waiting. Her eyes locked onto us the second we walked in, and the rage in them was enough to stop me in my tracks.Shit.Alaric frowned. “What happened?”Emilia stood slowly, every movement controlled, deliberate. Her jaw was tight, her nostrils flaring as she exhaled through them. “You bastards,” she hissed. Before I could ask what the hell was going on,
