Emilia’s POV

I was folding Francesca’s tiny socks when the front door slammed so hard it rattled the walls. My heart jumped into my throat, but before I could process the noise, a whirlwind of fiery red hair and outrage swept into the room. Rosa.

“Emilia!” she bellowed, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she stormed toward me. She dropped her leather bag onto the floor, eyes blazing.

“Rosa?” I blinked, startled. “You’re back early—”

“Don’t you dare,” she snapped, pointing an accusatory finger at me. “Don’t even try to deflect, Emilia. You owe me an explanation, and you’re going to give it. Now.”

I froze mid-sock fold. “Explanation for what?”

Her hands flew to her hips, her glare sharp enough to cut glass. “Don’t play dumb. I know everything. The kidnapping, Alonso, the whole insane ‘you’re-his-daughter’ revelation—everything. And you didn’t tell me?!”

I winced. Of course, she knew. Rosa had a knack for ferreting out information like a bloodhound. Still, the thought of

212Alaric’s POVWork never ends in this life. The early morning hours, the quiet hum of the house, none of it gave me peace anymore. Not with everything we were juggling—alliances, threats, Alonso. It was like balancing on a knife’s edge, and if I tipped too far in any direction, the whole operation would come crashing down.I stood by the window in my study, a glass of whiskey in hand. It was too early for this, but it was the only thing keeping me from grinding my teeth down to dust. Allesio had been quiet for the last ten minutes, flipping through reports at my desk. His silence was unusual, but I didn’t press. Not yet.“You going to keep brooding, or are we going to talk about the shipment?” he finally asked, not looking up.I sighed, swirling the amber liquid in my glass. “We lost three trucks last week. Three. Do you understand how much that sets us back?”“Of course, I do. I’m the one cleaning up your mess.”I shot him a look, but he smirked like he wasn’t intimidated in the s

213Emilia’s POVThe idea of a girls’ day had been Rosa’s idea, of course. She’d declared it as soon as she’d waltzed into the house, full of energy after her blow up with Alaric, Allesio and I. I hadn’t even had time to argue before she swept Francesca into her arms and started planning a day out as though she lived here full-time.“Emilia, you’re entirely too cooped up. A little shopping, some fresh air, and maybe some wine—what do you say?” she’d said, practically dragging me to the closet to pick out something “decent.”And that’s how I found myself sandwiched between Rosa and Francesca in the backseat of one of Alaric’s cars, our driver watching the chaos unfold in the rearview mirror with thinly veiled amusement.Francesca was perched on my lap, tugging at the edge of my coat. “Mommy, can I have ice cream? Pretty please?”I smoothed a hand over her curls, laughing. “It’s not even lunchtime yet, baby.”“But Mommy—”“Francesca,” Rosa cut in, a playful warning in her voice. “You’re

214Alaric’s POVThe house was unusually quiet for a change, the kind of quiet that settled deep into your bones and made everything feel more significant. Francesca had just gone to bed after an exhausting day at the park with Emilia and Rosa, and though she’d promised to stay put, I could hear the occasional muffled giggle from her room. She wasn’t asleep yet, but I didn’t mind. Tonight wasn’t about perfection—it was about sincerity.I sat in the living room, the small velvet box burning a hole in my pocket. Emilia was curled up on the couch, a book in her lap, her hair falling in loose waves over her shoulder. She looked so at ease, so present, that it almost made me second-guess the timing. But then she glanced up at me, her eyes soft, and I knew. There would be no better timing than this. I had to do it now, before some shit goes down in our lives once again and steals the moment from us.“Why are you staring at me like that?” she asked with a raised brow, setting the book down w

215Emilia’s POVTears were still shining in my eyes as I stared at the beautiful emerald rock on my finger. I still couldn’t believe that Alaric had proposed. He loved me, that was already too obvious from his actions but this…I hadn’t been expecting this. It made my heart want to burst out of my chest.I stared at where he was seated, cradling Francesca in his arms. I still found it a little too hard to believe that I would finally be Francesca’s mother. For real this time. I would be her mother. And I’d be Alaric’s wife.I inhaled deeply and closed my eyes, unable to help the wide smile that was forming on my lips. I felt a hand on my shoulder and rather than panicking, I relaxed into it instead. I knew it was Alaric. I recognized his touch.“What are you thinking of?” He asked, kissing my neck tenderly then rubbing my shoulders. I looked around for Francesca but she wasn’t here which meant he had already taken her up to her room.“I still can’t believe this,” I murmured, stretchin

216Matteo’s POVThe phone rang once, twice, then a third time. I paced the length of my living room, gripping my phone very tightly. Every second that she didn’t pick up stretched unbearably long. My frustration boiled just beneath the surface. I’d been trying to reach Emilia for days—no, weeks—and it felt like I was shouting into the void.“Come on, pick up,” I muttered under my breath. And then, finally, the click of the call connecting.“Hello?” Her voice was soft and hesitant as if she wasn’t sure if she should answer.“Emilia!” I nearly yelled into the phone, relief washing over me. “Finally. Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been? I thought something happened to you!”There was a pause, and my heart was beating wildly in my chest. I could hear her breathing on the other end, and I could hear the faintest tremor in the sound.“Matteo…” she started, her voice breaking slightly. “I—there’s so much to explain.”I stopped pacing and sat down heavily on the couch. “You better sta

217Matteo’s POVAlaric’s mansion was quieter than I expecred. It wasn’t crawling with guards and there wasn’t any sound of gunshots. That was basically what I expexted. That the house would be crawling with guards who were holding big guns and would scare me away once they see me.I was thoroughly disappointed with the peaceful and quiet environment that I was staring at. I walked to the front door and was about to knock when Emilia opened it, and the sight of her stopped me cold. She looked… different. Tired, worn, like someone who’d fought a battle they hadn’t been prepared for. But then there was something else. A subtle glow I couldn’t understand.“Matteo,” she said, her voice soft but warm.“Hey,” I said, stepping in and pulling her into a hug. I held her for longer than I meant to, not letting her pull away until I was sure she was really there, in one piece.“You okay?” I asked, stepping back to look at her.She gave me a small smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m better

218Gianna’s POVI had just settled onto the couch with a steaming mug of tea when I heard a knock at the door. My heart did a little flip. I could already tell who it was without checking. Not many people knew my residence, and the people who did wouldn’t just come here unannounced. Only he would.Matteo wasn’t supposed to visit tonight, but then again, Matteo rarely followed plans. I set the mug down and went to open the door. There he was, leaning casually against the doorframe, his dark hair slightly tousled, a sheepish grin on his face.“Surprise,” he said, holding up a bag of takeout like a peace offering.“Matteo,” I said with a smile, stepping aside to let him in. “You know you don’t have to bribe me to let you in, right?”“Bribe?” he repeated, walking past me. “This is just me being thoughtful.”“Uh-huh,” I said, closing the door behind him.He kicked off his shoes and made his way to the couch like he owned the place. I followed, plopping down next to him. He opened the bag

219Matteo’s POVI leaned back in my chair, swirling the coffee in my mug as Emilia paced the living room in front of me. She wasn’t good at sitting still, especially when she was in one of her overthinking moods. Today, she was obsessing over some party Alaric was hosting, which I honestly couldn’t care less about. If it were up to me, she wouldn’t be with him in the first place, talk less of attending a stupid party he was hosting.“So, what’s the big deal if you don’t wear the exact right dress?” I asked, smirking as she shot me a glare. Since I didn’t have to.go.to work today, what better wah to spend my day tham to spend it infuriating my big sister?“It’s not about the dress, Matteo,” she said, throwing her hands up. “It’s about the impression.”“Right, because mafiosos are known for their deep appreciation of fashion,” I teased, taking a sip of my coffee. She groaned and finally dropped onto the couch across from me, glaring at me like I was the root of all her problems.“Why a

302Allesio’s POV The whiskey burned its way down my throat, but the ache in my chest didn’t ease. It never did, no matter how many glasses I downed, no matter how many fists I threw at nameless men in dark alleyways. I was becoming reckless, but I didn’t give a damn. Maybe if I pushed hard enough, if I destroyed myself enough, the guilt would stop gnawing at me.It never did.“You look like shit,” Alaric said, dropping into the seat across from me in the dimly lit bar. “And you smell worse.”I smirked, lifting my glass in a mock toast. “Cheers to that.”His jaw ticked. “This is getting pathetic.”“What’s pathetic is you tracking me down like a goddamn babysitter.” I tossed back another drink and signaled for another. The bartender hesitated, eyes flicking to Alaric, but I shot him a glare. He poured it. Good man.Alaric exhaled sharply, his patience thinning. “You’re fighting like you’ve got nothing to lose.”I chuckled darkly. “Because I don’t.”“That’s bullshit, and you know it.”

301Rosa’s POVThe restaurant was nice. Upscale but not overly pretentious, the kind of place where the waiters wore crisp white shirts but didn’t look like they wanted to strangle themselves with their ties. Candlelight flickered across the polished wood table, catching the deep red of my wine as I swirled it in my glass. Across from me, Jason—or was it Jacob?—smiled, teeth perfectly straight, dimples popping like he had been genetically engineered to charm.I smiled back. It wasn’t hard. He was attractive, well-dressed, and had that effortless confidence that came with knowing you were objectively good-looking. He was saying something about his job—finance, obviously—and I nodded like I was interested. I should have been interested.Instead, my mind drifted to the last time I had sat across from a man at a restaurant. The heat in Allesio’s gaze, the way he had leaned back in his chair like he owned the whole damn place—and maybe he did. The way his hand had rested on my thigh under

300Allesio’s POV The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Alaric sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his jaw clenched, fingers drumming impatiently against the polished wood. Around him, his most trusted men stood at attention, awaiting orders.“She only took her car and even that’s untraceable. No flights booked in her name. No trace of her anywhere,” one of the men reported.Alaric exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “I don’t give a damn how much it costs—find them. If they’re hiding, make them regret it.”I sat back in my chair, rubbing a hand down my face. This was getting out of control. I had been barely holding it together as it was, knowing Rosa had shut me out completely. The only thing keeping me from losing it entirely was the fact that Alaric was just as on edge. Maybe more. He was spiraling without Emilia, and I couldn’t blame him. It had been days. No calls. No messages. Nothing. And with Emilia being pregnant? Yeah, he was losing his mind.

299Rosa’s POV. I tried to keep it together. God knows I did. But no amount of pretending, no amount of running, could stop the inevitable. The moment we got back from our trip and crashed out at an hotel nearby, I felt it creeping in. The pain, the longing, the absolute stupidity of my heart. I hated the way I reached for my phone only to remember I’d blocked him, the way my chest tightened at the sight of a dark-haired man on the street, the way I found myself rereading our old texts like a fool.It all came crashing down on me right now.We were sitting on the bed, a ridiculous reality show playing in the background. She had a bowl of popcorn in her lap, her focus barely on me, but she must’ve sensed something was off because she suddenly turned to me with narrowed eyes.“You’ve been weird since we got back,” she said. “What’s wrong?”I shook my head. “Nothing.”She scoffed. “Right. And I suddenly am not angry with my husband.”That made me crack a smile, but it didn’t last. I pre

298Rosa’s POV. The sun was already high in the sky, glistening off the infinity pool as I stretched out on a lounge chair, soaking in every last second of this trip. Our trip. The trip that Emilia and I had taken to escape, to breathe, to exist without the weight of betrayal pressing down on our chests.Emilia sat beside me, oversized sunglasses covering most of her face, her drink in hand as she let out a satisfied sigh. “I’m not ready to go back.”I groaned in agreement. “Same. Reality sucks. We should just stay here forever, become beach bums.”She turned to me with a smirk. “Tempting. But I think Alaric would burn this entire resort down looking for me. And Allesio...” she trailed off, hesitating.I tensed but forced myself to act unfazed. “Allesio is the least of my concerns.”She didn’t believe me, obviously, but she let it slide. “Fine, fine. No men talk. Today is all about us, and we are going to make the most of it.”“Agreed,” I said, clinking my glass against hers. “One la

297Allesio’s POV. I paced the length of the living room, phone pressed to my ear, listening to the endless ringing before it cut off to voicemail. Again.“Rosa, it’s me. Call me back. Please.”I hung up, sighing as I rubbed my hand down my face. This was getting ridiculous. She had shut me out completely—her number wasn’t going through, my texts weren’t delivering, and she was nowhere to be found. It had been two days. Two days of absolute silence. Two days of losing my goddamn mind. And to make things worse, Alaric wasn’t doing any better.“Where the fuck did she go?” Alaric snapped, storming into the room, his phone gripped so tightly his knuckles had turned white.“Still nothing?” I asked, already knowing the answer. His jaw clenched. “No. Nothing. She’s not answering her phone, and none of my men have any clue where she and Rosa went. They just disappeared.”I let out a low whistle. “Damn. You really pissed her off, huh?”He shot me a glare. “Shut up. Like you’re any better? Ros

296Rosa’s POVEmilia got up all of a sudden, a scowl on her face as she paced the length of her bedroom, arms crossed over her chest, her brows furrowed deep in thought.“And Alaric— he— he just acts like nothing happened at all,” she murmured to herself. I kept quiet, not knowing what to say to that, I just continued watching her walk up and down the room.I watched from her bed, one leg tucked underneath me, the other bouncing slightly. “You’re going to burn a hole in that floor if you keep pacing.”She ignored me, muttering to herself. “I can’t just sit here and wait for him to come back like nothing happened.”“You could slap him again.” I shrugged. “That seemed satisfying.”Her lips twitched, but she stayed serious. “No, I want to do something that actually gets under his skin.”I smirked. “Emilia, you are under his skin.”She rolled her eyes but didn’t deny it.I tilted my head. “What exactly are you trying to do here?”She stopped pacing and faced me. “I want him to go crazy w

295Rosa’s POVI pushed open the door to my apartment, and the silence hit me like a punch to the stomach. It was the kind of silence that mocked me—taunting, suffocating. The kind that made it impossible to pretend everything was fine.I dropped my bag on the floor and let out a breath. I had spent the night at a hotel, needing to be anywhere but here. But now, standing in my own space, I realized that “home” didn’t feel like home anymore. Not with his scent still lingering in the air.Not with memories of him trapped in the walls.I walked to my bedroom, my heart pounding as I opened the closet. And there it was—the evidence that he had been here, that he had once belonged to me.His shirts. His jackets. His stupid, expensive cologne still clinging to the fabric.I yanked a navy-blue dress shirt off the hanger, my fingers gripping the soft material like it was personally responsible for my heartbreak. Then, slowly, I knelt and pulled out the shoebox under my bed. We had just returned from a meeting, one that should have left me focused, but my mind had been anywhere but on business.Rosa.I hadn’t heard from her all day. Not a text, not a call. Nothing. What did I expect after all that had happened this morning?Alaric walked ahead, rolling his shoulders like he was already ready for another fight. “I need a drink,” he muttered. Then we saw her.Emilia.She was sitting in the center of the room, back straight, hands clasped in her lap. Waiting. Her eyes locked onto us the second we walked in, and the rage in them was enough to stop me in my tracks.Shit.Alaric frowned. “What happened?”Emilia stood slowly, every movement controlled, deliberate. Her jaw was tight, her nostrils flaring as she exhaled through them. “You bastards,” she hissed. Before I could ask what the hell was going on,
