Emilia’s POV

“Emilia?” Allesio’s voice rang out while I quickly braided Francesca’s hair and pulled her dress over her head. She was ready for her lessons now.

“Yes?” I called back. Maybe he didn’t know I was here. I picked up the bags containing her books and held her hand, leading her to the door.

Allesio met me at the door.

“Are you ready to go?” He asked.

“Go where?” Francesca asked before I could even answer him.

“I’m going to the hospital to see Matteo,” I explained to her and her eyes brightened.

“Really? Can I come with?” She asked eagerly.

“No, sweetie,” I replied with a shake of my head.

She tugged on my sleeve with that pleading look I was coming to know so well.

“Please, Mommy?” Francesca pouted, stretching the word out like it would change my mind. “I want to meet him! He’s your family too.”

I knelt down and brushed a loose curl from her forehead. “I know, sweetheart. But this isn’t a visit for you, okay?”

Her face fell, instantly making me feel bad. It would have bee

19Alaric’s POV “You’re quiet,” Allesio’s voice rang through the living room. It was only me here, Emilia and Francesca had gone to their rooms. It was probably that she didn’t want to stay around me, because the moment I stepped into the living room with my laptop, she carried Francesca, who was sleeping, and left.I ignored Allesio, not interested in having a conversation with him. If he thought I was quiet, then I didn’t know what he expected me to do. I was working, and I continued to do just that, keeping my focus on my laptop and typing.“Well I’m going to the bar. Do you want to come with? Might help relieve your stress a bit,” he continued, heading to the door.“Just go to wherever you want to , Allesio,” I murmured, keeping my focus on my laptop. He didn’t say anything, and that got me suspicious because Allesio would have retorted. I frowned at that. He was definitely up to something. In the blink of an eye, he snatched my laptop from my hand and closed it.“I insist.” He s

20Emilia’s POV I walked out of Emilia’s room, tying my hair into a bun and rubbing my eyes sleepily. I was so tired. I had barely had any rest today because Francesca had been hyperactive.I turned around the corner leading to my room and stopped in my tracks, my eyes widening a bit at what I saw and my breath catching in my throat.I wasn’t sure why I felt so strange. Standing at the end of the hallway, I could just make out Alaric and the woman he was leading toward his room. She was laughing, her hand lightly touching his arm. He looked… relaxed, something I haven’t saw in him. Her laugh echoed softly, and the sight of his calm expression hit me in a way I wasn’t prepared for.My chest was hurting and it felt like my airflow had been cut off. I couldn’t breathe. I haven’t felt like this every since my parents death, and the day I found out Matteo had a kidney failure.I turned away quickly just as his head turned to where I was standing, pretending I hadn’t seen anything. After a

21Alaric’s POV I turned around on the bed, yawning and stretching, my limbs feeling loose. I felt relaxed. More relaxed that I had been in a very long while. And it was all thanks to Serena. When I opened my eyes to check if she was still there, I realized she must have slipped out of the room and gone when I was still asleep. And then the mistake I made hit me so hard it made me blink in shock. I shouldn’t have brought her here. Gods. How could I have made such a stupid mistake? What if she was a spy for the other families and she had been there to spy on me? I’d have fallen right through her trap and she would have known all the perimeter of my house. We could be in danger right now. Francesca could be in danger right now.I jumped out of my bed, racing out of my room and straight to Francesca’s bedroom. My heart was pounding hard in my chest as I pushed the door open and to my relief, she was still sleeping, curled up against Emilia.A frown marred my face. Since when did Emilia

22Emilia’s POV. “Mommy….mommy… no! Mommy!”I stirred in my sleep, rubbing my eyes before turning around.“Mommy! Mommy! No! Leave me alone! Mommy!”My eyes flew open and I turned around on the bed, my eyes going wide as I saw Francesca trashing around on the bed, tears sliding down her cheek.“Mommy!” She sobbed, still trashing on the bed.“Sweetie,” I said loudly, hoping it would snap her out of whatever trance or nightmare she was. I help her hands down by her sides. “Sweetie, mommy is here, okay? Mommy is here. It’s okay. It’s okay,” I assured her in soft whispers.“Mommy!” She sobbed weakly now, her eyes still closed through her trashing had reduced.“It’s okay, baby. It’s fine. Mommy is here,” I said softly, letting go of her hand and wiping her tears before kissing her forehead. She opened her hand at last and she threw her arms around me instantly.“Mommy! You’re safe,” she whispered in relief.“I’m safe, baby girl. Mommy is okay. Mommy is fine. What happened? What did you dr

23Alaric’s POV I paced around the office, checking the time every now and then while I waited for Allesio to give me the signal that all was set. He was monitoring my men as they got the cars ready. I ran a hand through my hair, messing it up without a care. I haven’t spoken to my daughter today, and I haven’t set eyes on Emilia since I went to Francesca’s room this morning. It seemed like they were avoiding me, and now I’d have gone to check one last time but I didn’t have any time to waste at all. I had to be at the port and monitor the men while they do their shit.“Boss,” Allesio called, poking his head into the office. “All set, boss.”I grabbed my phone from the table swiftly and walked out of my office, my eyes alert and looking around if I’d see Emilia or my daughter while I was leaving, but I didn’t. I cast that out of my mind, deciding that I’d speak to them later. Francesca was safe in Emilia’s hands and there were men protecting them while I was gone.I stepped out of th

24Emilia’s POV Francesca’s mood improved a bit since afternoon. Though she didn’t chatter like she always did and didn’t play with her toys like always. She preferred to watch cartoon on her tab, and I joined her in watching it. If only to get my mind away from everything that had been running through it since yesterday.I just witnessed how closed off Francesca can be, and it was unsettling. I kept thinking maybe I’d done something wrong, but it seemed everything was linked to that nightmare she had. And she had also refused to step out of the room. She’d had her breakfast, lunch and dinner in the room. And she hadn’t asked for Alaric. Not once.I ran my hands through her ailky, silver hair, kissing the top of her head and she giggled a bit, her eyes trained on the cartoon she was watching. This was the sixth one of the day. I wondered if Alaric would disapprove of it. But it seemed like he had gone out this night with his men. And I wondered if he’d come back all bloodied up like

25Alaric’s POV I was breathing hard by the time I sped back into my driveway and parked my ride in the middle of it, leaving the door open as I stepped out and stormed towards the house entrance. Allesio came down from the car and hurried after me.I had only been getting angrier each passing minute because I couldn’t understand why this was happening to me when I was in power. During my father’s reign, shit like this doesn’t happen. But this…this happening during my reign, it was going to put a stain on my record and that vexed me.“Ric,” Allesio called out, falling into step beside me, but I didn’t answer him. I couldn’t focus on him. All my mind was on how I was going to fix what had happened. This could ruin my empire. All the things I’ve built since I came into power.“Ric,” Allesio called out again and I turned to him, glaring at him to shut the hell up before focusing on the path to my office. I didn’t have any enemies. All enemity my father had made before his death, I had m

26Emilia’s POV Francesca was still crying and hiccuping in my arms when Alaric stepped in, closing the door behind him so quietly that I wouldn’t have known that he was in already in here had I not been facing the door.He looked torn, his whole demeanor downcast as he took a step forward and paused, as if contemplating turning around and going out. But he didn’t do that. Instead he took another step forward. And another, until he was standing in front of me, and then fell to his knees. He put his hand on Francesca’s arm, and she raised her head. On seeing that it was him, she brushed him away and buries her face in my chest.“Francesca. Baby,” he called out in a broken voice but she shook her head.“Go away,” she demanded. “I don’t want to see you here. Go away!”“Baby. Baby I’m sorry,” he said gravely. “I’m so sorry, baby. Daddy is sorry, okay? Daddy didn’t mean to yell like that.”“Go away!” She insisted, refusing to look at him.“Francesca,” I intervened, looking away from Alari

94Allesio’s POVThe smell of fresh coffee hit me as I entered the kitchen. Irene was already there, bustling around with her usual efficiency, her movements fluid and practiced as she diced vegetables and stirred something in a skillet. “Good morning,” she greeted me and I shot her a smile even though she wasn’t looking.“Good morning,” I replied.I poured myself a glass of orange juice, the cool tang of it refreshing after last night’s long, tense dinner. I hadn’t slept much, thoughts of Alaric’s plan and Rosa swirling in my head like a storm I couldn’t quite escape. Rosa, with her sharp tongue and the fire in her eyes, had occupied more of my thoughts than I cared to admit. As if summoned by my thoughts, the door to the kitchen creaked open, and there she was. Rosa, her hair slightly mussed from sleep, wearing an oversized shirt that brushed just above her knees. She looked surprised to see me, but her expression quickly settled into a mask of indifference.“Morning,” Irene chirped

93Rosa’s POV The guest room smelled like lavender, a scent I recognized as distinctly Emilia’s. Her love for all things calming and soft hadn’t changed. I sat cross-legged on her bed, my suitcase tucked neatly in the corner. Emilia shuffled around the room, fussing with pillows and blankets like she thought I’d complain about the arrangements.“You don’t have to try so hard,” I teased, a smirk playing on my lips. She glanced over her shoulder, her expression caught between a laugh and a frown. “I’m not trying hard. I’m just making sure you’re comfortable.”“Emmy,” I said, using the nickname I’d called her since we were kids, “you could stick me on a couch and call it a night. I’d survive.”She rolled her eyes but finally stopped adjusting the already-fluffed pillows. “Fine. But don’t complain if you get cold.”“Noted.”She climbed into bed beside me, curling her legs under the blanket. For a moment, we sat in silence, the dim glow of the bedside lamp reflecting on the walls. It felt

92Allesio’s POV Walking into Alaric’s office, I could feel the thick tension rising and it was practically almost cutting my airflow. Too thick and suffocating. I could already tell this wasn’t going to be a casual conversation.Alaric was leaning against his desk, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. The door shut behind me with a heavy click, and for a moment, the only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioning.“You needed me?” I asked, keeping my tone neutral. He nodded toward one of the chairs. “Sit.”I didn’t like the way he said it, but I complied anyway. Alaric rarely ever spoke to me with that ‘Capo’ tone of his unless he had a plan brewing, and those plans were rarely simple. He stayed silent for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. Finally, he said, “I saw the way she was looking at you during dinner.”I didn’t need to ask who he was talking about. Rosa. And I didn’t like it at all. I could already te that I wasn’t going to like this conversation one bit

91Rosa’s POV Dinner had been tense, to put it lightly. The kind of tension that sticks to your skin, makes the air heavier, and every word feel like a weapon. It wasn’t new to me, being in situations like this—powerful men with their piercing gazes and loaded questions. But Allesio? He was a different story altogether.I couldn’t stop staring at him.Not because I wanted to—no, that would’ve been too simple. It was the way he carried himself, the silent command of his presence that made it impossible to look away. Even when I tried to focus on Emilia or Alaric, my eyes betrayed me, darting back to him every chance they got.Dinner was over now, and Emilia and Alaric were putting Francesca to bed. That left me in the dining room with him. Alone.I hated how my pulse quickened. He sat at the far end of the table, his body relaxed but his sharp eyes locked on me. It was like he could read every thought racing through my head, like he knew I was fighting a losing battle against the pull

90Allesio’s POV The realization had hit me like a punch to the gut. Emilia had a friend born into the mafia world—a world she claimed to despise, a world she pretended she wanted no part of. And she never said a damn thing about it.“Did you know?” I asked Alaric as we walked back into the study, the tension still thick in the air.He shook his head, his expression just as puzzled as mine. “No, but I should’ve. I don’t like surprises, Allesio, and this one doesn’t sit well.”We didn’t talk for a moment. The weight of Rosa’s presence—her name, her bloodline—hung in the space between us. Romano Smith wasn’t just another name; he was a name that commanded respect and instilled fear in equal measure. That Emilia had someone like Rosa in her inner circle raised more questions than either of us were comfortable with.“She’s dangerous,” I finally said, breaking the silence.“And clever,” Alaric added, his voice low. “We need to keep her close.”I frowned, already guessing where this was he

89Rosa’s POV The moment we stepped away from the living room, Emilia wasted no time. She grabbed my arm, pulling me into one of the side hallways, her expression a mix of confusion and disbelief.“Okay, spill,” she said, crossing her arms. “What the hell was that back there?”I raised an eyebrow, playing dumb. “What was what?”“Don’t give me that,” Emilia snapped, her tone sharper than I was used to. “You and Allesio. The way you two were staring at each other like you’ve got some unresolved history. Where do you know him from?”I hesitated, not because I was ashamed, but because I knew this would shock her. Emilia wasn’t one to overreact, but I could already see her wheels turning.“Well…” I started, leaning against the wall as casually as I could manage. “We, uh, had a one-night stand.”Emilia’s jaw dropped, her eyes wide with shock. “You what?”I shrugged, trying to downplay it. “We met at a club. It was fun. No big deal.”“No big deal?” she repeated, her voice rising slightly. “

88Allesio’s POV The sound of low chatter floated up from the living room as Alaric and I made our way down the staircase. Emilia’s excitement was unmistakable, her voice animated as she greeted her friend.“She seems to be enjoying herself,” I muttered, keeping my tone neutral even though my mind was already racing.Alaric raised a brow, glancing at me as we descended. “We’ll see how enjoyable it is after we get her friend’s name.”It was protocol, of course. Anyone stepping into this house needed to be vetted, especially now, when tensions with rival families were high. Even Emilia’s friends weren’t exempt.“Do you think she’s harmless?” I asked as we approached the hallway leading to the living room.Alaric’s face was unreadable, his usual calm, calculating expression in place. “That’s what we’re about to find out.”I nodded, trying to shake the unease settling in my chest. As we turned the corner, stepping into the living room, the first thing I noticed was Emilia, her face glowi

87Rosa’s POV The sun was shining hard on my windshield as I turned into the long, tree lined driveway. I couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer beauty surrounding me. The mansion at the end of the road lookedime something out a movie. Large and intimidating even though it was not supposed to be for someone with my background. But this was where Emilia was staying. My best friend, my partner in crime (well, figuratively speaking), and the one person who could always brighten my day no matter what.I parked my car right next to one of the many luxurious cars lining the parking lot and stepped out, smoothing down my dress and taking a deep breath. The idea of seeing Emilia after so long made my heart race with excitement, but there was also a small knot of unease in my stomach. Mansions like this didn’t belong to ordinary people, and Emilia’s vague descriptions of her “boss” who turned out to be Alaric Castillo, was anything but ordinary. One of the most feared and ruthless Capo in the

86Allesio’s POV The quietness of the office was usually comforting to me. It helped me focus. But today, it was suffocating. No matter how hard I tried to focus on the ledger in front of me, my mind kept drifting back to her.Rosa.I pressed my thumb against the corner of the page, flipping it more aggressively than I needed to. What was wrong with me? I was glad she was gone when I woke up this morning. It was better that way. Cleaner. A one-night stand didn’t need the mess of lingering glances over coffee or awkward goodbyes. And yet, I couldn’t shake her.The way her body had moved against mine, the soft hitch of her breath, the sharp intelligence behind her eyes—I clenched my jaw, shutting the memory down before it could spiral further. I’d had my share of good nights with women, but there was something about Rosa that had seeped into my mind like a drug.I didn’t like it.“Allesio,” Alaric’s sharp tone snapped me out of my thoughts.
