Emilia’s POV

“Emilia?” Allesio’s voice rang out while I quickly braided Francesca’s hair and pulled her dress over her head. She was ready for her lessons now.

“Yes?” I called back. Maybe he didn’t know I was here. I picked up the bags containing her books and held her hand, leading her to the door.

Allesio met me at the door.

“Are you ready to go?” He asked.

“Go where?” Francesca asked before I could even answer him.

“I’m going to the hospital to see Matteo,” I explained to her and her eyes brightened.

“Really? Can I come with?” She asked eagerly.

“No, sweetie,” I replied with a shake of my head.

She tugged on my sleeve with that pleading look I was coming to know so well.

“Please, Mommy?” Francesca pouted, stretching the word out like it would change my mind. “I want to meet him! He’s your family too.”

I knelt down and brushed a loose curl from her forehead. “I know, sweetheart. But this isn’t a visit for you, okay?”

Her face fell, instantly making me feel bad. It would have bee

19Alaric’s POV “You’re quiet,” Allesio’s voice rang through the living room. It was only me here, Emilia and Francesca had gone to their rooms. It was probably that she didn’t want to stay around me, because the moment I stepped into the living room with my laptop, she carried Francesca, who was sleeping, and left.I ignored Allesio, not interested in having a conversation with him. If he thought I was quiet, then I didn’t know what he expected me to do. I was working, and I continued to do just that, keeping my focus on my laptop and typing.“Well I’m going to the bar. Do you want to come with? Might help relieve your stress a bit,” he continued, heading to the door.“Just go to wherever you want to , Allesio,” I murmured, keeping my focus on my laptop. He didn’t say anything, and that got me suspicious because Allesio would have retorted. I frowned at that. He was definitely up to something. In the blink of an eye, he snatched my laptop from my hand and closed it.“I insist.” He s

20Emilia’s POV I walked out of Emilia’s room, tying my hair into a bun and rubbing my eyes sleepily. I was so tired. I had barely had any rest today because Francesca had been hyperactive.I turned around the corner leading to my room and stopped in my tracks, my eyes widening a bit at what I saw and my breath catching in my throat.I wasn’t sure why I felt so strange. Standing at the end of the hallway, I could just make out Alaric and the woman he was leading toward his room. She was laughing, her hand lightly touching his arm. He looked… relaxed, something I haven’t saw in him. Her laugh echoed softly, and the sight of his calm expression hit me in a way I wasn’t prepared for.My chest was hurting and it felt like my airflow had been cut off. I couldn’t breathe. I haven’t felt like this every since my parents death, and the day I found out Matteo had a kidney failure.I turned away quickly just as his head turned to where I was standing, pretending I hadn’t seen anything. After a

21Alaric’s POV I turned around on the bed, yawning and stretching, my limbs feeling loose. I felt relaxed. More relaxed that I had been in a very long while. And it was all thanks to Serena. When I opened my eyes to check if she was still there, I realized she must have slipped out of the room and gone when I was still asleep. And then the mistake I made hit me so hard it made me blink in shock. I shouldn’t have brought her here. Gods. How could I have made such a stupid mistake? What if she was a spy for the other families and she had been there to spy on me? I’d have fallen right through her trap and she would have known all the perimeter of my house. We could be in danger right now. Francesca could be in danger right now.I jumped out of my bed, racing out of my room and straight to Francesca’s bedroom. My heart was pounding hard in my chest as I pushed the door open and to my relief, she was still sleeping, curled up against Emilia.A frown marred my face. Since when did Emilia

22Emilia’s POV. “Mommy….mommy… no! Mommy!”I stirred in my sleep, rubbing my eyes before turning around.“Mommy! Mommy! No! Leave me alone! Mommy!”My eyes flew open and I turned around on the bed, my eyes going wide as I saw Francesca trashing around on the bed, tears sliding down her cheek.“Mommy!” She sobbed, still trashing on the bed.“Sweetie,” I said loudly, hoping it would snap her out of whatever trance or nightmare she was. I help her hands down by her sides. “Sweetie, mommy is here, okay? Mommy is here. It’s okay. It’s okay,” I assured her in soft whispers.“Mommy!” She sobbed weakly now, her eyes still closed through her trashing had reduced.“It’s okay, baby. It’s fine. Mommy is here,” I said softly, letting go of her hand and wiping her tears before kissing her forehead. She opened her hand at last and she threw her arms around me instantly.“Mommy! You’re safe,” she whispered in relief.“I’m safe, baby girl. Mommy is okay. Mommy is fine. What happened? What did you dr

23Alaric’s POV I paced around the office, checking the time every now and then while I waited for Allesio to give me the signal that all was set. He was monitoring my men as they got the cars ready. I ran a hand through my hair, messing it up without a care. I haven’t spoken to my daughter today, and I haven’t set eyes on Emilia since I went to Francesca’s room this morning. It seemed like they were avoiding me, and now I’d have gone to check one last time but I didn’t have any time to waste at all. I had to be at the port and monitor the men while they do their shit.“Boss,” Allesio called, poking his head into the office. “All set, boss.”I grabbed my phone from the table swiftly and walked out of my office, my eyes alert and looking around if I’d see Emilia or my daughter while I was leaving, but I didn’t. I cast that out of my mind, deciding that I’d speak to them later. Francesca was safe in Emilia’s hands and there were men protecting them while I was gone.I stepped out of th

24Emilia’s POV Francesca’s mood improved a bit since afternoon. Though she didn’t chatter like she always did and didn’t play with her toys like always. She preferred to watch cartoon on her tab, and I joined her in watching it. If only to get my mind away from everything that had been running through it since yesterday.I just witnessed how closed off Francesca can be, and it was unsettling. I kept thinking maybe I’d done something wrong, but it seemed everything was linked to that nightmare she had. And she had also refused to step out of the room. She’d had her breakfast, lunch and dinner in the room. And she hadn’t asked for Alaric. Not once.I ran my hands through her ailky, silver hair, kissing the top of her head and she giggled a bit, her eyes trained on the cartoon she was watching. This was the sixth one of the day. I wondered if Alaric would disapprove of it. But it seemed like he had gone out this night with his men. And I wondered if he’d come back all bloodied up like

25Alaric’s POV I was breathing hard by the time I sped back into my driveway and parked my ride in the middle of it, leaving the door open as I stepped out and stormed towards the house entrance. Allesio came down from the car and hurried after me.I had only been getting angrier each passing minute because I couldn’t understand why this was happening to me when I was in power. During my father’s reign, shit like this doesn’t happen. But this…this happening during my reign, it was going to put a stain on my record and that vexed me.“Ric,” Allesio called out, falling into step beside me, but I didn’t answer him. I couldn’t focus on him. All my mind was on how I was going to fix what had happened. This could ruin my empire. All the things I’ve built since I came into power.“Ric,” Allesio called out again and I turned to him, glaring at him to shut the hell up before focusing on the path to my office. I didn’t have any enemies. All enemity my father had made before his death, I had m

26Emilia’s POV Francesca was still crying and hiccuping in my arms when Alaric stepped in, closing the door behind him so quietly that I wouldn’t have known that he was in already in here had I not been facing the door.He looked torn, his whole demeanor downcast as he took a step forward and paused, as if contemplating turning around and going out. But he didn’t do that. Instead he took another step forward. And another, until he was standing in front of me, and then fell to his knees. He put his hand on Francesca’s arm, and she raised her head. On seeing that it was him, she brushed him away and buries her face in my chest.“Francesca. 280Emilia’s POV I didn’t think. I didn’t hesitate. I just ran.My heart pounded in my chest as I shoved open the door to Alonso’s house, my breath coming in short, panicked bursts. I barely registered the grand hallway, the expensive furniture, the tension in the air thick enough to choke me.All I saw was them.Alaric.Alonso.Standing in the middle of the room, guns raised, pure hatred burning in their eyes. And then—Alonso’s finger twitched on the trigger.“NO!” I screamed, my voice cracking as I threw myself between them.It was instinct, reckless and stupid, but I didn’t care. I didn’t even think about it, I just moved. My arms spread wide, my body the only thing standing between them.“Are you both insane?” I shouted, my voice shaking.Alaric’s eyes snapped to me, wild with rage and something else something darker.“Get out of the way, Emilia,” he said, his voice low, deadly.“No,” I shot back. “You get out of the way.”His jaw clenched. “This isn’t your fight.”“The hell it

279Alaric’s POVAlonso leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms out like we were having a casual conversation instead of a standoff. His gun was still within reach, but he hadn’t gone for it. Neither had I.Not yet.“You’re awfully quiet,” he noted. “Did I hit a nerve?”I scoffed, keeping my gun trained on him. “You haven’t said anything worth responding to.”He smirked. “Maybe I should.”I narrowed my eyes, watching him closely. His demeanor had shifted slightly—not cocky, not smug. Something else. Something that made my instincts sharpen.Alonso exhaled slowly, tapping his fingers against the table. “You think you know everything about why our families hate each other. But you don’t, Alaric.”I let out a humorless laugh. “You killed my brother. That’s all I need to know.”He shook his head. “That was an accident.”I stiffened. “Bullshit.”His eyes darkened. “You think I wanted Dominic dead? You think I went out that night planning for this to happen?”I said nothing, but my gr

278Alaric’s POVThe night was still, the kind of stillness that came before a storm. The kind that made your gut twist in anticipation, like the world itself was holding its breath. I barely noticed. All I could feel was the fire burning inside me.I gripped the gun in my hand, my fingers tightening around the cold metal as I stepped out of the car. I stood in the front of Alonso’s mansion, watching as his guards moved around relaxed without suspecting anything at all.Good.He wouldn’t see me coming. My footsteps were steady as I moved up the driveway, my mind sharp, focused. Every part of me was locked in, my rage simmering just beneath the surface. The guards at the front barely had time to react before I took them down quick, clean, quiet.I didn’t come here for them.I came for him.The door to his house wasn’t locked. Arrogant bastard.I pushed it open without hesitation, stepping inside. The place was dark, but I knew he was here.I could feel him.A few more steps, and then—

277Emilia’s POVI knew something was wrong the second I walked into the house. The energy was different—charged, electric, like the air before a storm. The staff avoided eye contact, moving quickly, their silence heavier than usual. My stomach twisted. Then I saw him.Alaric stood in the middle of the living room, dressed in all black, a gun strapped to his side, his expression cold and unreadable. My heart nearly stopped.No.No, no, no.I stepped forward, my voice sharper than I intended. “Where are you going?”He didn’t even flinch. Didn’t hesitate.“To finish what should’ve been done a long time ago.”I sucked in a shaky breath. I already knew what he meant, but I asked anyway, hoping, praying, I was wrong.“To kill Alonso.”A simple statement. Flat. Like he was announcing he was going out for coffee.Panic clawed up my throat. “Alaric, please—”“No.” His voice was sharp, final.I took another step toward him. “You can’t do this.”“I have to do this.”“No, you don’t!” I nearly sh

276Emilia’s POV The house was quiet when I walked in, which was unusual. Normally, there was at least some noise—Francesca’s laughter echoing through the halls, the distant hum of conversation, or the occasional sound of Alaric’s men moving around. But tonight, everything felt… still. Too still. It wasn’t long ago that I returned from my trip with Rosa and Francesca, feeling lighter than I had in weeks. The time away had been refreshing, a much-needed break from everything. But as soon as I stepped inside, that feeling disappeared, replaced by a kind of suffocating feeling.I set my bag down and started toward the stairs when I heard voices coming from Alaric’s office. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, but the door was cracked open, and my name stopped me in my tracks.“She can’t know about this, not yet,” Alaric’s voice was sharp, controlled.I frowned and stepped closer.“I understand,” Allesio replied. “But are you sure about this? Going after Alonso like this… it’s going to start a

275Emilia’s POVI needed a break.Desperately.Between Alaric’s mood swings, the tension in the house, and the unshakable feeling that something was being kept from me, I was losing my mind. And I knew Rosa could sense it too because she was the one who suggested this trip.“Two days,” she had said, grinning as she packed a bag in my room while I sat on the bed, watching her like she had lost it. “No men. No stress. Just me, you, and Francesca.”I had hesitated at first. Leaving Alaric like this felt… wrong. But what was I even staying for? To keep watching him glare at his phone and snap at Allesio without telling me why?So here we were, driving up the coast, Francesca singing along to whatever pop song was playing on the radio while Rosa handled the wheel with her usual confidence.I sighed, leaning my head against the window as the salty breeze from the ocean drifted into the car.“Okay, spill,” Rosa said, shooting me a glance.I frowned. “Spill what?”“Whatever it is that’s been

274Alaric’s POVI sat in my office, fingers steepled as I stared at the map spread across my desk. The Cruz estate was marked with red, the layout burned into my mind. I had spent hours going over every possible entry point, every possible weakness. Alonso Cruz would not see me coming.I had been waiting for this moment.A knock at the door snapped me out of my thoughts. I quickly gathered the papers, shoving them into a drawer before calling out, “Come in.”The door opened, and Emilio stepped inside, his expression grim. “We’re ready.”I nodded. “Good. Lock the doors.”He closed the door behind him, locking it before moving toward the chair across from me. “Allesio still doesn’t know?”I clenched my jaw. “No. And he won’t.”Emilio frowned. “Alaric—”“No,” I cut him off. “He had his chance to be honest with me. He chose to lie. He chose to protect Alonso.”Emilio sighed but didn’t argue. He knew better.I had made my decision.“You’re sure about this?” he asked after a moment.I lean

I’m big.”“Oh yeah?” I raised an eyebrow. “How big?”Francesca stretched her arms as wide as she could, her eyes sparkling with determination. “This big!”I smirked, tapping her nose lightly. “Still too small to wear my watch.”She huffed but quickly got distracted, playing with the buttons on my sleeve. It burned through my veins, consuming every rational thought, leaving only the raw, seething anger that had taken root in my soul since the truth came out. The Cruz family. Those bastards had killed Dominic. And Allesio—someone I trusted, someone who was supposed to be my right hand—had known all along. He had kept it from me. Lied to my face.I gritted my teeth as I sat in my office, gripping the armrests of my chair so hard that the leather creaked beneath my fingers. The image of my brother’s face flashed in my mind—Dominic, who had always had my back, who had always put family first. He was gone. And the people responsible had been breathing easy all this time.Because Allesio let them.I slammed my fist onto the desk, sending a glass of whiskey toppling over.
