Author’s POV

The scene starts in a dark room with the weak brightness of one overhead light making stretched, sinister shadows on the grimy walls.

The air was filled with the pungent odour of cigar smoke curling slowly around Moretti who sat in the huge leather chair in the middle of the room.

Clad in an elegant black suit mind, he faced away from Alessandro, who stood there bedraggled and beaten.

Alessandro’s breaths were shallow and ragged. His shirt, once so pristine, was now tattered and smeared with blood, clinging to a body soaked in sweat but on this night, even in his own battered state, he sounded desperate, his voice quaking just enough to convey the agony of his unsoundness.

“Please,” Alessandro stuttered, his voice urgent and scared. “I was ambushed. I didn’t see them responding that soon. It wasn’t... It wasn’t meant to be like this.”

The figure in black offered no immediate response. The only sound in the room had been the soft crackling of the Cohiba cigar

Author’s POVMoretti leaned back, the leather chair creaking lightly beneath him, watching Alessandro’s retreating body. His ice-cold, calculating gaze tracked every step he took, his fingers drumming a phantom beat against the armrest of his chair. But just as Alessandro got to the door, Moretti lifted his right hand, and his voice sliced through the silence like a knife.“Wait,” he said sharply.Alessandro froze as the hand of Moretti’s guard extended toward the door handle to block him from exiting. His breath hitched up and a cold sweat formed on his brow. He turned slowly, fear pooling in his stomach. There was a danger there, in Moretti’s voice, one that Alessandro recognized all too well.“Get your ass back here,” Moretti said, his manner calm but filled with menace.Alessandro complied, his limbs heavy as lead as he stepped back toward the statured figure. He halted a few feet from Moretti, his head turned down, unable to meet the detective’s penetrating stare.Moretti’s li

Jordan’s POVI knew I should have assisted Sierra in disembarking the helicopter, but for reasons I couldn’t fully lay fingers on, I found myself walking away. My boots crunched on the gravel as I walked toward the pilot, my thoughts jagged. Sierra’s face flashed in my memory, her wide, poppy-like eyes glimmered. Whenever I saw them, they seemed to hold some secret message for just me. And it wasn’t the first time I’d witnessed that look, a glimmer that suggested something secret. It was a silent wish she never said aloud, a gentle demand she’d sooner bear alone than say to another person and yet, she didn’t have to say it. I always knew.It was like a cold wind suddenly hitting me and freezing me in my tracks. I spun on my heels, eyes flicking around the area surrounding the helicopter. There she was, standing just outside the open cabin door, one hand gripping the frame for balance. The golden glimmer of the setting sun painted her silhouette as amber and gold danced across her w

Sierra’s POV He took my hand in his, his fingers slipping through mine. “You already do,” he said. We sat that way for a moment, the silence between us not heavy now but reassuring. For that moment his hand was in mine, the world beyond was forgotten, and I felt a peace I hadn’t experienced in weeks. I knew without a doubt that as long as we had one another, we could face whatever came next. “Jordan,” I called out, my voice tender but firm. “I have to speak with you about Luca.” He lifted an eyebrow, now fully engaged with me. “What about him?” he said, his tone steady, but instilled with curiosity. I took a deep breath, attempting to calm the emotions swelling beneath the surface. “I’m concerned about him,” I said. “He seems distant and bothered. It feels like he is going to disengage from the world. He was always so obnoxious, so confident, and now not… now I’m not even sure….” My voice trailed off. Jordan placed his cup lightly on the tabletop and stood. He approach

Sierra’s POV As we moved out to the fireplace in the living room, Luca excused himself to go take a piss in his room. I feared that he might not return, so, I sat by the fireplace and stared into the flickering flames. Jordan’s words played over in my head like a scratched record: “Leave Luca and focus on ourselves for now”. How can I possibly do that when I know he is such a sweet kid? I know that Jordan loves him with all he’s got and is also bothered about his mental health but it seems that Luca was given a heavy dose of information which he doesn’t know how to handle yet. I was lost in my own thoughts thinking of how I was going to protect Luca from something I couldn’t even put an end to. The sound of light footsteps behind me broke my train of thought. I glanced around to find Luca leaning on the doorframe, hands shoved into his pockets, his head cast down a little bit. “Hey, kiddo,” I said gently, as casually as I could muster. “Come join me.” He shook his head but did n

Sierra’s POV The next morning, I woke up to find out that Jordan had left. The warmth still on his side of the bed told me he hadn’t left long ago, but he’d snuck out without a sound. There was a note on the nightstand that drew me in: “Gone to handle some things. Don’t wait up. Love you.” I looked down at the note, prickles of unease dancing across my skin. Jordan rarely left without telling me his intentions in person. Something about the vagueness of “handle some things” rubbed the wrong way. I wanted to see how Luca was doing, so I throttled to his room, I knocked gently on his door and waited for a reply. None came. “Luca?” I called, pushing the door open. The room was empty. His bed had been made, and his backpack was missing. I felt a surge of panic wash over me. I rushed downstairs, asking the first guard I came across if he had seen Luca leave. “Around an hour ago,” the guard said. “He said he was going to the training grounds.” I felt a momentary sense of reli

Sierra’s POVThe guards eventually released the woman but their reluctance was almost something else. She stumbled a little and righted herself before adjusting the strap of her threadbare bag. Her hair fell messily in front of her face, but as she looked up, I saw sharp features and piercing green eyes. She was more out of place than anyone I had ever seen in the sparring arena, her clothes were practically torn, and she had a wildness to her that stood out in the crowd of polished fighters and trainers. But there was something in the way she looked at the people in the room, a confidence or maybe a defiance, that transfixed the room.“Thank you,” she said, low but strong. She took a quick look at me, then Amelia,  as if assessing how much trouble she had given.“Who are you?” I inquired, stepping forward. My tone wasn’t hostile, but I made sure it exuded enough authority to elicit a response. With that, the woman squared her shoulders and pushed her hair off of her face. “My name’

Sierra’s POV“What was that I saw in there, Amelia?” “It’s nothing,” she dismissed with a wave of her hands and threw her face away.“Don’t tell me you are considering having a fling with Brandon. For crying out loud, you are married to a great man. What else are you looking for?” I spoke with so much passion and from a place of pain.“How come I didn’t see this all along? How long has this been going on, Amelia? Amelia”“Hey! Stop probing me. You aren’t my mother!” she spat and walked away furiouslyAs Amelia got lost in the crowd, I couldn’t help but look back. There was something about her presence that just gnawed at me, but it was more than just the tension of the situation or the presence of Elara. It was the warmth and how Brandon talked to Elara that got me, the whole situation had some almost eerie resemblance to someone I never thought I’d be thinking of treating me in the past. The picture of Dominic hit me with the force of a tidal wave. Sierra’s POVI wheeled my cart down the bright aisles of a shopping cart, the fluorescent lights buzzing faintly above me. The distant taste of air conditioning interrupted by the clatter of customers was in some way reassuring. This was also rare, but Luca went inside with me. Usually, he’d invent some excuse to wait in the car, absorbed in his phone or sketchpad.I looked back to find him lounging against the counter near the entrance, scrolling through whatever was on his phone. His appearance, while unusual, was comforting. It was difficult a few days ago, and any indication he was interested in staying close was a modest victory.“Stay where I can see you,” I said lightly, although I knew he wouldn’t wander far. As I walked down the aisles, I selected items with care, plucking fresh vegetables, a carton of milk, and a loaf of bread. I thought of dinner, there was a thick stew, maybe, something that would have enticed Jordan to the table, both physically and emotionally. As I r

Author’s POVCarlos took another swirl of whiskey and tilted the glass until the amber liquid gleamed in the dim light, and then he took a slow sip. He said this with a smirk that never left his face as he looked Lorenzo up and down, glancing between amusement and contempt.“Jordan was attacked,” he said, finally, gauging Lorenzo’s reaction. Lorenzo stiffened for an instant, but he held his surprise in check. “Attacked?” he echoed.Carlos laughed and pounded his glass on the desk. “Oh, yes. Right in his hospital bed. Imagine that. The mighty Jordan, the vulnerable, the helpless, with a needle in his neck.”Lorenzo’s brows furrowed. “Somebody tried to kill him in the hospital?”Carlos nodded. “When it was all functioning, it was beautifully orchestrated, well, almost. Someone got past his guards. Slipped right into his ward.” He sighed dramatically and shook his head. “Such a shame they failed.”Lorenzo exhaled, rubbing his jaw as he registered the news. Author’s POVLorenzo faced Carlos Moretti and his face was still bruised from the battle he had escaped from. His normally crisp suit was crumpled, evidence of a rough night he had just endured. He squared his shoulders, took a sharp breath and started his report.“It was a fucking mess, boss,” he confessed, bitterness rolling heavy across his tongue. “Everything was in place but the element of surprise was on our side,” he sipped from the glass of wine in his hands and took his time to puff out a smoke before he went ahead to continue his report.“The plan was tight. But Ethan …” He said the name like it was dripping acid on his tongue. “He fought like a motherfucking animal. I mean, I didn’t see that coming…”Carlos perched behind his grand mahogany desk, the low light of the chandelier throwing menacing shadows over his sharp features. The glass of whiskey in his hand was swirling, a sign of his unblinking expression, but the small glint of disappointment that took up residence in

  • The Mafia's Kingpin's Arranged Bride   140. The Masked Man

Jordan’s POVThe thought of being confined to a three-week bed rest brought with it some crippling effects that had me reeling over in thoughts upon thoughts. I couldn’t yet bring myself to accept the imagery that it evoked in my mind's eye.I knew how much stress that would be for Sierra, her eyes were already sunken in from staying awake for too long on end. She had refused to admit it to my face but I knew from her looks that she needed rest. Not the kind that the hospital is willing to offer me right now but the Kind that gives her liberty to wake, sleep and eat at any time she wants. I didn't want to ask about work. I remember that she planned on resuming work after we returned from the vacation but here she is sacrificing her work to keep me company and ensure that I got myself by all means. More and more thoughts kept strolling into my heart till I returned to the bed-rest issue.“Bed rest? Three weeks lying here, doing nothing at all,” I murmured grudgingly. It sounded worse

Jordan’s POVI was awake, alive and breathing. That should’ve been enough but lying here in this hospital bed, as my body slowly, starts to retake its strength, my mind was miles ahead straight to the mine and to the discovery of the vein of crystals that had made everything different. As soon as I realized what we’d come across, I knew it was precious. No more than rare. It was the sort of discovery that could change the entire operation’s trajectory. We had been mining that region for years, but nothing like this had ever come up before and now, when we were so close to something amazing, I was in a fucking hospital bed. I clenched my jaw.Ethan could handle it. I trusted him with my life, and more than that, I trusted him with the business. He had been around long enough to know how I would react to everything, and if there was a time to save his face, this was it. I had no doubt that he would deliver. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t eager to return myself.“Jordan,” Sierras said,

  • The Mafia's Kingpin's Arranged Bride   138. I Love You

Sierra’s POVJordan’s fingers trembled weakly in my own but the warmth was there, steady and real. It was as if the tension was draining out of my body, but it also felt like another kind of weight settled heavily in my chest. There were so many words I wanted to express, so many feelings I had stuck inside my body over the past couple of days. But now that he was awake, that he was here... where do I start? His eyes skimmed over my face, tired but sharp enough to see the exhaustion carved into my features. “You haven’t been sleeping.”I chuckled, shaking my head. “And you have?”He smiled…just a little, but it was there. “Touché.”For a moment, we simply sat, the hospital room uncomfortably quiet. The only noise came from the gentle hum of the machines that monitored his vitals, a reminder that even as he stirred awake, he remained long from healed. Not yet.Jordan grimaced and inched slightly. I immediately leaned forward. “Hey, take it easy.”“I’m fine,” he mumbled, but the muscle

  • The Mafia's Kingpin's Arranged Bride   137. I Was Scared

Sierra’s POVThe sound of a heartbeat monitor was the only thing to fill the silence in the room. The fluorescent lights were cold and long, ghostly shadows flitting across the floor. I could swear that the walls closing in on me as I bent over Jordan, who lay there, ghostly pale, breath shallow. It was like watching a candle flicker, never sure if it would burn through the night.I was spent, physically, mentally and emotionally. My bones ached from the hard chairs in the hospital, my eyes burned with fatigue, and my heart … well, my heart … it was just tired. But leaving? That wasn’t an option. Not when he was still so much like this. I lightly ran my fingers along the back of his hand, tracing the veins just under the skin. “You’re freaking me out, Jordan,” I said, my voice hoarse. “You have to wake up. You don’t just get to... just leave me waiting. The door creaked open behind me, and I turned sharply, half-expecting another doctor with another answer. But it was Amelia again,

Sierra’s POVMy heart racing, I took a step forward. “What are you saying? What’s wrong with him?”Dr. Reynolds locked eyes with me, and for the first time, his eyes appeared to soften. “It’s something rare. A complication we’ve seen only once before, long ago. But...” He did not finish, shaking his head.“I don’t know that I can explain it all the way just yet. We need to run more tests. “For now, we’ll continue to keep a close eye on him.” I swallowed hard, fear still heavy in my throat. “And... after the tests?”He paused and nodded slightly. “We will know more after the tests. But as I can promise you, we are not leaving his side.”But even as he spoke, I had this sinking feeling in my stomach like a stone falling. Testing is just practising your pain tolerance, as it turned out.As the doctors and nurses scrambled to collect their gear, my mind raced. But something was happening to Jordan, something neither of us was prepare

  • The Mafia's Kingpin's Arranged Bride   135. Not Just an Illness

Sierra’s POVThe door swung open and the fluorescent light from the hallway poured into the room, stretching long shadows across the floor. But then several doctors and nurses trailed behind him, their white coats blurring in motion as they rushed toward Jordan’s bedside. My heart raced in my chest, my pulse quickening while the room appeared to fill with an unseen weight. There were more than I thought there would be, and the gaze in their eyes wasn’t one of casual concern. It was something else, an urgency boiled in my heart such that my nerves were set on edge. A cold sweat formed on the palms of my hands, and my throat exploded with doubt. The busy sounds of nurses setting up equipment and doctors giving orders were muted as if I were underwater. I looked from Jordan to the increasing number of shapes at the foot of the bed. What did this mean? Why so many?I could hardly register the doctor who came in with the rest of the team, his face as familiar as before, though now he lo

Sierra’s POVThe instant Jordan’s body became still, fear washed over like a tidal wave. The nurses were in a hurry, working with the defibrillator, their voices short-tempered and urgent, but I couldn’t hear them, not really. What I saw, in my mind, was the memory of his eyes, onyx streaked with a flare of gold before they shut. This was not merely a medical emergency. It was something that defied my comprehension, something that defied science. The nurse placed the paddles on Jordan’s chest. “Clear!”His body convulsed as the electricity surged through him. Nothing I didn’t think in that moment. I tried to dial Amelia’s number but my fingers were too weak to even scroll through my phone as I saw Jordan’s chest rise and fall with each shock. I folded my hands so hard that my nails dug into my palms. “Jordan, come on,” I whispered under my breath.“Clear!” The nurse exclaimed again, the defibrillator resting. Another jolt. His body jerked off the bed and then sank back down. Still not
