ALMA’S POV

The familiar three grey wall and a steel bar door was what I had called home for the past one month, judging by the lines I had drawn on the walls. I struck a line over six lines marking another week.

My bladder protested weakly pulling me out of my cavewoman thoughts and I threw my leg over the bed, and pushed myself up, holding my bump. I walked the three steps to my in house toilet and sat.

The worst part about my new home was how fast my dignity was shattered. I had tried to save some, but eventually I bowed to the intense pressure in this hell hole. I hadn’t seen Gio or Damien since the last time we spoke.

The guard who brought food for me every day ignored me every time I asked about them or to make a phone call. Maybe Zaverio didn’t know where I was, and if I helped even in the smallest capacity, I knew he was going to come for me.

“You look mighty comfortable on that disgusting toilet.” Damien’s chirpy voice broke through my thoughts, grinding my happy moments to du

ALMA’S POV“Just like that?” I eyed the woman sitting across from me, not buying the bullshit she was selling to me. “You are telling me I can walk out the door if I want to.”Gio crossed her long legs, and leaned into her chair. “I am telling you that you’re a free woman. I do apologize for our poor accommodation.”“You locked me up for a month without access to a lawyer; you should be apologizing for more than your shitty accommodation.” “It could have been worse; you could have had a roommate. Do you know how many pregnant women survive in prison?” Gio smacked her lips when she took a sip of her hot coffee. “Our evidence is weak, if the state was to take you to court, all the evidence would be inadmissible.”“You knew all of this and kept me against my will, why? Did you think I was going to break and beg for a plea deal or something?”Gio nodded unapologetically. “Or something? Agent Damien assured me you had something we all wanted, if we kept you for a while then maybe you woul

ALMA’S POVGio drove for hours, and I busied myself with the city I knew breezing by. I smiled at a few familiar places, burying the heaviness in my heart. There was no time for melancholy, this was my new life and I didn’t have a choice but to face it.My initial plan to call Zaverio flew to the back of my mind, because I knew that was what they were expecting. Gio may try to pose as a soldier for justice but living with Zaverio had tainted my naïve mind.Good people weren’t always good and bad people weren’t always bad, it all depended on the side you saw and when. The federal agents of who knows what agency knew I was innocent but they didn’t care about me because I was useless to their case.If I was ever captured by the police, the evidence needed to clear my name would never see the light of day and the likes of Damien and Gio would go to bed and sleep like a baby.My heart burned when I thought of Nadine, and how painfully she must have died. She had saved me so many times beca

ALMA’S POV“I’m very confused, Mr. Antonio. I thought I was here for the reading of my father. Don Riccardo was my boss, what does he have to do with my father?”Antonio didn’t respond immediately, occupied with the task of retrieving the envelope. He found it in the lowest drawer and pulled it out triumphantly. “I understand that a lot of things will sound very strange to you. I sent that letter to the Riccardo Estate per Don Riccardo’s request- Gilbert I mean because Zaverio is the new Don- I believe these words aren’t strange to you on this level.”I shook my head. They weren’t strange to me at all; maybe if I hadn’t met Jace or seen Zaverio wave a gun around; or maybe if I hadn’t spent the last few months of my life getting to know the other world that existed when everyone else went to sleep.“I know the insides of the business that Zaverio runs.” I twisted my hands together, wondering if this was another plot by my recent captors to fool me.“If you think I’m working for the fed

ZAVERIO’S POVThere was a ringing in my ears that had become part of my daily life. Initially, it had irritated me and caused me a lot of migraines and mental distress. One day I sunk deeper into the hole it was digging in my head and found something that had eluded me… peace. The handle of the knife sticking of the missing eye socket of the dead man on my floor was bloody, I hated to part with my knives but I hated soiling my hands with the blood of people beneath me.The pained pleas of the men kneeling in a straight line collided in the air like chaotic music, soothing my ears and uplifting my mood. These men were the self-acclaimed resistance group that had been opposing my rule on my turf.Don Favelo’s turf had officially been renamed to Don Riccardo’s. I had spent the last two months rooting out the weeds in my land. Alvaro was trusted enough to oversee the area in my stead, but I had had enough of people underestimating me.If my father was still alive, he would have told me I

GIO’S POVThe pinch in my lower shoulder had morphed into the kind of pain I couldn’t ignore. My shift wasn’t over so I couldn’t pop an Advil and call it a day. I was sitting in front of my computer trying to wrap up what I had done today.“You had no right to release her.” I rolled my eyes when I heard the voice of the one person that wasted one month of my time.“You don’t get to tell me what I can or cannot do, Damien.” I squinted at a misspelt name and made a note to inform my secretary to improve on her computer skills or she was going to be searching for another job.“I was the one who got us close- closer than you’ve ever been Gio, and you’ve been on this case for years.” He gloated, but his words flew over my head.“Like I said Damien, I don’t answer to you. Alma was useless to me and to the Riccardo operation. Zaverio went radio silent after you took her, and there went your fabulous plan.”“I can always go to Kane. He will tell you what I’ve been telling you for months. You’

GIO’S POVMy mouth tasted like lead and my head felt heavy. I took stock of my surroundings with my eyes closed. My hands and feet were tied tightly but not enough to cut off my circulation.I was bleeding from somewhere on my head and I could make out a few voices. None were familiar but it was essential that I remembered everything from this ordeal.A part of me screamed that I wouldn’t survive, but the other part of me asked me to fight for any chance at survival.“You can stop pretending to be asleep, Miss Gio.” Zaverio’s voice cut through my mental struggle, forcing me to open my eyes.I hissed in pain, welcoming the banging headache that clearly told me I was alive. “Do you abduct everybody or just me? I don’t know if I should be flattered or start to beg for my life.”“I don’t picture you as someone who can beg.” Zaverio sat on the chair in front of me and unbuttoned his suit. The pictures we had accumulated over the years didn’t do him any justice.Zaverio Riccardo was a very

ZAVERIO’S POV“Are you sure you don’t need any of us to accompany you.” Von asked me, tapping the hood of my car. “I don’t know much about this Antonio guy, but if they found a copy of his letter in your office, then I guess he’s part of us.”I heard the question Von wasn’t asking me and I didn’t respond. If he knew what I had done, he would shoot me in the arm. I needed to undo the wrong now that Alma was aware of another of my lies.“Antonio is the family’s lawyer. He doesn’t sully his hands with our bloody work but he deals with all the paper. My father trusted him with his life, and now that he’s dead I trust him with mine.”“I am not going to tell you how crazy that sounds. I don’t care who the guy is as long as you come back here safe and unharmed.”“You can check in with our new informant while I’m away, just to make sure she’s walking the fine straight line we painted out for her.” I knew she was, people rarely strayed from who their conscience painted them out to be. GIO’S POVMy blood pressure rose every time someone looked at me. There was no chance the blood hounds couldn’t smell my betrayal. I reeked of it, and tried to cut myself open more so anyone could put me out of my misery.I had thought about turning myself in, becoming the inside man. Zaverio would think he was playing me but I would be playing him as well, it was a risky road but it would make me feel less filthy after agreeing to his deal.Shelby had been scared shitless when I pulled up in front of her house at 3am, one hour after I was thrown out of a car on the high way. Luigi wasn’t home, and I had tried my best not to scare her and the kids.I did check every single room for hidden cameras and microphones and everywhere came out clean. Zaverio hadn’t tried to reach out and I had no idea how I was supposed to be in contact with my new employer.Shelby wasn’t bothered by Luigi’s absence, in her defense; Luigi had left a text for her that he was going to be out of town for a few d

GIO’S POVI watched the way her fingers tightened around the steering wheel and I feared she would rip it off. Her question hung in the air like a harsh noise, and I opened my mouth to answer several times but the words died in my throat.“Is this a new way to throw someone off, you send them to get breakfast and then go on a date with someone else?” Rose flexed her fingers again. “Why didn’t you tell me?”“I was going to tell you and it wasn’t a date.” The words didn’t sound believable to my own ears. “It’s not what you think I promise, I would never try to get rid of you like that.”“You’re saying what you’re saying but I saw something else, I waited outside that fucking restaurant for hours Gio with my phone in my hand, you couldn’t even shoot me a sympathy text?”I closed my eyes, “I was going to text you I swear, I calculated the time it would take you- Look, I didn’t want to you to get home and panic when you couldn’t find me but I didn’t want to be rude.”Rose nodded. “Right, y

GIO’S POVRose and I were passing a bowl of popcorn while we watched a re-run of Grey’s Anatomy in the living room. We had been holed up in this space for almost three days; it would be obvious to anyone who walked in that we were in our honeymoon phase.I smelt like her and she smelt like sin. Rose was right when she said I was the initiator in this relationship. I had never doubted my stamina but with Rose, I knew that was a battle I was never going to win.She was always ready when I reached for her, and she fucked me so good, it made me crave more like a sex junkie. Rose had turned me into a sex addict and it wasn’t even up to a week.“Do you think they are going to wrap up this series one day?” Rose asked around a mouth filled with popcorn.“Do you know when the world is going to end? If you do then maybe when the world is ending, because Grey’s Anatomy is going to be here until all the current actors die and they recruit new ones.”Rose chuckled. “I love popcorn and your legs pi

GIO’S POVI uncrossed and crossed my leg for the fifth time, trying to focus on the file I was supposed to be reading. My subordinates were going to dish their case out to me and I needed to be updated, it wouldn’t help me make up my mind, but it would paint a picture for me.I had twenty minutes to drag my brain from the high Rose had kept me in all morning to the present. Like the kiss, we didn’t talk about the fact that we had had sex. When I walked out of my bedroom, dressed for the hour, she was back to being my bodyguard. The heat lingered in her eyes but they didn’t reach mine, not when we were in a space that clearly defined our positions. I was her boss and she was my employee- not directly but if she looked at me the way she did this morning, I wouldn’t mind if she took me on my table.I bit my finger hard, it did the job of centering my focus. Why was I thinking of Rose’s fingers and the way they felt inside me, how they moved and how full I-“Miss Gio.”The file in my hand

GIO’S POVI heard the light footsteps of Rose walking past my door to the kitchen, then the telltale sound of water filling the coffee pot, she never drank coffee the way I do, but she always put a pot on for me to drink away.I hadn’t slept a wink but I didn’t feel tired. I was confused about our current situation. Was the kiss a figment of my imagination? I touched my lips and pulled my hand back when they tingled. Was that normal? What were supposed to do now that it had happened? Maybe it was a spur of the moment thing and she had forgotten about it. Energized by that thought, I jumped out of bed with a light spring in my step.I was going to go out there and behave normally; there was no need to make anything awkward she had probably just kissed me in passing or something, pushing the painful squeeze in my chest away I opened my door and stopped short.Rose was sitting at the dining table, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. Her hair was wet which meant she had taken a shower and

ALMA’S POVMy mother pushed the food in her plate around, more focused on the file she was reading. I didn’t want to interrupt so I kept my movements silent; eyeing her in case she needed space. We hadn’t spoken much since her checkup with the doctor. Big Mac had tried to make me more at home in my mother’s huge house. I used the excess time on my hands to explore the many rooms that were unoccupied.Big Mac kept Zara entertained when I was busy keeping myself from losing my mind. He didn’t communicate much with me about anything, and I didn’t mind much since we didn’t have a lot to talk about. My main worry was with Martha, she hadn’t answered any of my calls since I left with Big Mac after my mother was shot. I was too worried to function properly. What if something had happened to her? I shook my head, printing the details of that day into focus.Martha hadn’t been in the house when my mother arrived, she had convinced me to let her check the store, it had been closed indefinitely

ZAVERIO’S POV“The next shipment is scheduled to fall next week.” Von said, tapping on the screen of the tab in his hands. He wasn’t a man used to advanced gadgets, but he had to get used to them seeing as our whole organization was leaving the paper trail era.“What about Ambrose? Did he like the guns we shipped to him the other day? If he did then he needs to finish paying for them.” I threw the tennis ball in my hand into the air and caught it. “Alvaro said he was going to drop by today, I have no idea what he wants to discuss, do you?”Von shook his head, “Our little bird is also back in her nest.” He was referring to Gio who had been incognito for some days. We tracked her to a rundown bar but kept our distance, leaving the overall surveillance to her bodyguard who acknowledged our presence but didn’t give room for any slip-ins. Rose was impressive, and if she decided to join the dark side, I would hire her.“We will find out what happened when she is ready to come back in, we ca

GIO’S POVMy phone vibrated on the bedside table in the shitty hotel I had found to hole myself into. I ignored it like I had for three days, staring at the ceiling until my eyes felt raw. It was my morning routine before I proceeded to drown myself in alcohol at night.I didn’t know how far I had walked after I left Rose but when I came to my senses, it was raining, I was soaked and as the universe pointed out, in front of a seedy hotel with lights that blinked haphazardly. I didn’t think twice about walking in, the girl manning the register took one look at my suit and sneered.“We don’t give rooms to cops.” She looked like she was ready to spit in my face.I blinked, looked down at my corporate attire. “I am not a cop, I work well with numbers.”She rolled her eyes. “Whatever.” She snatched a key from the few on the rack and threw it at me. “Keep the noise to a minimum, don’t expect any breakfast in bed and be gone in the morning.”Her eyes bore a hole in my back as I walked away.

GIO’S POVI avoided eye contact with everyone I walked past, hiding my shame in my eyes. If they looked hard enough, they would know what I had done, who I had chosen and whose blood was going to be on my hands. The pounding headache was the retribution I needed, it was a result to the restless night I had had. The five files Emily had given to me held information of a few powerful people in the world.Their deaths would shake the core of what they were heading, and that was the reason Emily was asking me to take my pick from the litter. ZAVERIO’S POVMy new shipment was being repackaged by my men; I watched them unload the new guns we were selling to a new contact on our turf across the river. The assault rifles were A grade, our buyer was going to be very happy to be getting his money’s worth. The drugs were on another table getting weighed by the new women we had hired. I had thought they would be a huge distraction to the men, but it was a morale booster instead. They worked harder to impress the women and the women stroked their ego in return.Nadine’s idea had been a hit and I made sure to compensate her heavily from the profit we were getting. After the bullet she took for Alma, she was under my protection for the rest of her life, and if my life ended, the Riccardo Empire was standing behind her.The phone in my hand burned my skin but I kept staring at it.
