Scarlett's POV

By the time we finally stepped off the plane, I felt drained. Like all the air had been sucked out of me. Hours of sitting still and pretending to be calm, while inside my mind was running a hundred miles a minute.

I didn’t even care about the luxurious first-class seats or the overly polite attendants. My head just felt stuffed full of cotton.

The sun outside was sharp and bright, too hot against my skin. It made everything feel too real. Too loud. Too exposed.

Lined up right outside the terminal were rows of sleek black cars, their engines humming softly like they were breathing in sync.

They weren’t regular taxis. Oh no. They were those shiny, special ones, like the kind you see only in movies. Drivers in perfectly pressed uniforms stood waiting beside them, opening doors like we were celebrities.

My mom grabbed my arm the second we stepped forward. “Scarlett, stay close, alright?” Her grip was tight. A little too tight, honestly.

But I didn’t argue. I just nodded

Scarlett's POV People around me wouldn’t stop whispering. Their voices grew louder and louder, mixing together like waves crashing over my head, making it impossible to ignore.“Oh my goodness! It's really Liam DeLuca…”“I heard he took out a whole group in one night.”“They say no one crosses him and lives to tell about it. He’s really dangerous, and he has no emotions.”The words hit me one after another, sinking in deeper than they should, like needles pricking beneath my skin. My hands started to shake.I stood perfectly still, gripping my bag like it was the only thing holding me together. On the outside, I might have looked calm, blank even, but inside, I was shaking so bad I felt like my knees would give out.Liam was no longer just standing at a spot; he had started moving, walking through the crowd like he didn’t see anyone at all. It was as if the noise, the flashing cameras, and the whispers didn’t even register. All of a sudden, he came to a halt and his eyes locked right

Scarlett's POV By the time I stepped out of the men’s restroom, it felt like the world had changed. Everything outside was still the same, with crowds bustling, cameras flashing, and voices rising. But inside me, everything felt too loud, too sharp, like my heart had been rattling against my ribs for hours.Keeping my head down, I weaved through the crowd, ignoring the bright lights and the hum of voices buzzing around me. I didn’t even care who saw me anymore. All I wanted was to get out of here. But of course, life didn’t let me off that easily. My phone suddenly buzzed hard in my hand, and I didn’t even need to check to know it was Liam.I hesitated for a moment, but there was no point avoiding him, so I picked up the call.“Where the hell are you?” His voice came sharp, like it cut right through the noise surrounding me. It sounded calm on the surface, but I could sense the underlying intensity.“I… I’m outside,” I stammered, keeping my eyes on the ground. “Near the back.”There

Scarlett's POV I opened my mouth to say something, anything at all, but Liam didn’t give me the chance. He lifted his hand, palm out, his eyes cold and sharp. “Don’t,” he said, voice flat. “Just shut up.”I froze, words dying in my throat. My fingers tightened around the suitcase handle, my heart pounding so loud I could barely think. He didn’t wait for me to respond, just turned and jerked his head towards the car parked at the curb. “Get in.”I hesitated for half a second, but the look in his eyes told me it wasn’t a request. Not even close.I followed him quietly, the wheels of my suitcase clattering softly behind me on the pavement. The driver opened the door without a word. Liam slid in first, and I climbed in after, trying to sit as far from him as possible. The air in the car felt tight and heavy. I sat stiffly, hands folded in my lap, sneaking glances at him from the corner of my eye.He didn’t speak, gazing out the window with a clenched jaw and unreadable eyes. The silence

Scarlett's POV Liam didn’t say much after he called to know if I was done with my search. There were no loud arguments, no cold lectures, no cold warnings. He simply arranged a private jet to bring me back home like it was the most ordinary thing in the world. Quiet, efficient, distant.I almost preferred when he shouted. At least then I knew exactly what to expect. The flight was too calm. The constant hum of the engine was the only sound, and I sat by the window, staring blankly at clouds rolling past like I wasn’t really there. Floating, weightless, empty.Even after we landed, everything felt the same. Quiet shadows followed me—James and four bodyguards, all of them instructed to stay close, but they said nothing. They didn’t have to. Their presence was enough to remind me.By the time we arrived at Liam’s house, the weight pressing on my chest felt unbearable. Heavy. Suffocating. No matter how much I tried to take deep breaths, it wouldn’t lift.Liam was seated in the living roo

Scarlett's POV“Why should I explain myself to you?” I asked without thinking. The moment the words left my lips, Liam's expression darkened, his rage twisting into something even more dangerous. Then, without warning, he pushed me.I barely had a second to react before he moved to where Martha’s husband lay on the ground, groaning in pain. Liam didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the man by the collar and pulled him up like a ragdoll.“Liam, no!” I gasped, rushing towards him.Martha screams pierced the air, filled with terror. “Let go of him! Let go of my husband!” She urgently tried to pull Liam away, but his grip was like iron. The man in his grasp coughed, his face twisted in pain. “P-please…” he choked out.Liam ignored the man's plea and suddenly delivered another hard punch.“Liam!” I sobbed, grabbing his arm with both hands and trying to pull him away. But he was too angry. It was like trying to stop a wildfire with bare hands. His muscles tensed, his arm pulling back—he was going t

Scarlett's POV After telling Michael to stay away from me, I was expecting him to scoff, to roll his eyes, to throw some arrogant, dismissive remark my way because that was what he always did. That was who he was.But to my surprise… he smiled. It wasn't a smirk. Not a cruel, mocking grin. It was an actual smile.I frowned. “What the hell is funny?”Michael didn’t answer right away. He just stood there, his lips slightly curled, as if he had a secret I wasn’t in on.I crossed my arms. “Well? Say whatever insult you’re thinking and get it over with.”His eyes flickered with something unreadable before he finally spoke. “I’m not trying to insult you, Scarlett,” he said simply. He wasn't? Something was definitely wrong because the Michael I knew would never say something like that.I studied him, looking for the usual arrogance. But something was different. His sharp edges were still there, but… dulled, somehow. What the hell was going on with him?I opened my mouth, but before I could

Liam's POV Scarlett had a way of making my blood boil. All the damn time. From the moment I picked her, she was nothing but stubborn—throwing glares, refusing to answer my damn questions properly. And when I finally got her into the car, she sat there like a damn statue, her arms crossed, her eyes focused on the passing streets as if I didn’t exist.Gripping the wheel tighter, I kept my eyes on the road, but I could feel my patience wearing thin. The silence between us wasn’t calm. It was loud in its own way, filled with unspoken words, and Scarlett’s stubborn refusal to acknowledge me.She sat with her arms folded tightly across her chest, facing the window, as if even looking in my direction would be too much effort.I exhaled sharply through my nose. “If you have something to say, just say it.”There was no response, not even a glance.Scarlett had never been quiet before. If there was one thing I could always expect from her, it was a smart mouth that would push me just enough to

Liam's POV The following day, in the late afternoon, I found myself standing in the middle of the apartment, looking around at a place that no longer felt… welcoming. The air still carried her scent—something soft, something that shouldn’t have mattered, but it did.I clenched my jaw. I was done.I turned to James, who was standing a few feets away from me, my voice sharp. “I'm leaving. When she finally decides to come out of her room, let her know I won’t be coming back.”James hesitated, his usual calm expression flickering with something unreadable. “Mr. Liam, maybe…”“Just do it.” My tone left no room for argument. He gave a slight bow. “Understood.”Without waiting for another second, I grabbed my keys and coat, and walked out without looking back.I had already wasted enough time.If Scarlett wanted to act like I didn't matter, like everything I did for her meant nothing, then so be it.The drive to my estate was quiet, the low hum of the engine the only sound in the car. • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 99

Scarlett's POV I never thought Michael would actually find me.Not here. Not in this house—his house, technically. The one Liam bought for me like a gift I never asked for, like a cage made of glass. When I first heard the knock, I told myself it was nothing. Maybe a delivery. A mistake. But something about it made my chest tighten. There was something certain about the way the knock sounded, like the person behind the door knew exactly who was inside.Still, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw when I opened it.It was really Michael. Standing there like a memory I had spent the past week trying to forget. He looked breathless. Shocked. Then his eyes locked on mine, and they filled with something raw—not just shock, but something like relief. Like just seeing me had knocked the breath out of him.His gaze moved past me, scanning the hallway. His voice dropped to a whisper. “Is anyone else here?”I shook my head. The second I did, he stepped forward and pulled me into a hug

Michael's POV That night, the moment Liam’s car disappeared into the darkness with Scarlett in it, I knew something was very wrong. It wasn’t just the way he drove off like a madman, or the way Scarlett looked at me one last time before slamming the door shut behind her. It was something deeper than that. Something sickening in my gut that told me Liam and Scarlett were involved in something I didn’t understand.I ran to my car and tried to follow them, but I wasn’t fast enough. By the time I reached the edge of the road, his taillights were nothing but red smudges swallowed by the horizon. And just like that, she was gone.I parked the car and sat there in silence, my hands shaking on the steering wheel, struggling to breathe. The weight in my chest felt like someone had punched straight through my ribs and crushed my lungs with their bare hands.I should have stopped her. Damn it, I should have fought harder. But all I did was let her go.The guilt didn’t come slowly. It hit me all

  • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 97

Scarlett's POV The first thing I felt was the sharp pain in my hand. A dull ache, like something foreign pulled at my skin. As I blinked, my eyes slowly adjusted to soft lighting, and the world around me came into clearer view.I was in the bedroom, with the curtains drawn halfway, letting bits of sunlight to filter in. A quiet beeping sound echoed near my head—steady, calm.I then noticed an IV drip in my hand. And Liam… was asleep beside me, his head resting gently on my arm.My whole body went stiff. The weight of everything came rushing back in one painful wave—his rage, the beach, the shouting, the bruises, the sex, the way my body gave out on me… and then darkness. My breath caught in my throat, and without thinking, I recoiled.Liam stirred immediately. His head jerked up. His eyes, still heavy with sleep, met mine. For a split second, he just stared. Then something wild lit up in his face—relief, joy, something else I couldn’t name.“You’re awake,” he whispered, reaching up

  • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 96

Liam's POV I didn’t remember dialing the number. My fingers just moved on their own, like they knew what needed to be done before I did. My throat burned as I barked into the phone.“Get the doctor. Now. Private, discreet, and fast.”I didn’t wait for a response. I dropped the phone on the floor and fell to my knees beside the bed.Scarlett was too still. Her lips were slightly open, and her lashes rested like feathers against her cheeks. Her chest rose and fell so shallowly that it made me sick.I reached for her hand. It was warm, but limp.“Come on,” I whispered, moving her hair away from her face. “Don’t do this. Don’t pull this shit, Scarlett. Not with me.”The door suddenly burst open behind me, and when I looked up, James stood in the doorway. He stood frozen as he took in the scene before him.I didn’t need to explain because the room spoke for itself—clothes torn and scattered across the floor, pillows thrown, sheets twisted, and Scarlett… lying unconscious. His eyes went wi

  • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 95

Liam's POV I had never felt panic like that before. It started with a call from James. He said Scarlett had gone to her father’s house. At first, I thought she had gone there to visit her family, so I tried to be calm. Gave her the benefit of the doubt. But then hours went by, and she still hadn't come back. I even called her several times, but there was no answer. That was when something in me snapped. My chest started tightening with every minute as I anxiously paced back and forth in my study.Suddenly, James appeared near the front door like he sensed the tension cutting through the air.“Where is Scarlett?” I barked. “Why isn't she back yet? It's getting late!”James flinched. “Mr. Liam, I… I thought she would be back on time, so I didn't bother…”“So you just let her walk out?!” I slammed my hand against the wall. “Are you blind or just stupid, James?!”“I didn’t see her leave…”“I don’t pay you to see,” I growled. “I pay you to watch. Find out when exactly she left the house.

  • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 94

Scarlett's POV I didn’t know how to answer Liam's question. His words hung in the air like smoke, thick and choking. They pressed down on my chest until I couldn’t breathe. What could I possibly say? Admit that I still cared for Michael? That I didn’t know what I felt? That I was confused and overwhelmed and caught between a past that never let me go and a present that terrified me?My mouth opened, but nothing came out.In that moment, Liam stepped forward slowly, his eyes scanning mine. His jaw clenched, and then, out of nowhere, his hand clamped down on my shoulder and pushed me back.I collided with the wall with a hard thud, a sharp gasp escaping me as my hands shot up in reflex.“L-Liam… what are you…”His palm was on my throat before I could finish. It felt cold and tight, pressing down on me.“So it’s really true?” he growled. “You have feelings for your damn brother-in-law? That’s the man you’ve been writing about in your stupid novel?”My heart dropped.“No. Liam, please ca

  • The Mafia's Claim   Chapter 93

Scarlett's POV The words were right there—balanced on the tip of my tongue, trembling with everything I didn’t know how to say.But just as I opened my mouth to answer Michael’s question, a violent roar tore through the night like thunder. Headlights exploded across the windshield, searing white light swallowing us whole. My hand flew up to shield my eyes, feeling my heart hammering against my ribs.Michael winced, leaning forward with a scowl. “What the hell…”Then I saw it.That plate. That damn license plate. My breath caught in my throat, and my blood ran cold. I didn’t need to read the numbers twice. It was Liam.Panic punched me so hard I couldn’t breathe. My phone started buzzing again, vibrating in my hand like it was trying to escape. I didn’t want to answer. God, I didn’t want to. But I knew better than to ignore him. Especially not now. Not after he had found us.I answered with a shaky breath. “Liam...”His voice was as cold as ice shattering against concrete. “You really

Scarlett's POV I couldn’t bring myself to look at him.The second those words left his mouth—“Will you please forgive me?”—my eyes immediately dropped to the floor of the car like they were too heavy to lift.I wasn’t ready for that question. I wasn’t ready for him.I had waited so long for him to remember me. I had hoped for it, and prayed for it in the dark corners of my room when no one could hear me cry. But now that he was here, fully awake, fully aware… I was the one who felt lost.Too many years had passed. Too many wounds had layered over the old ones.My chest ached in places I didn’t even know could hurt.“I…” I swallowed hard, still avoiding his gaze. “I don’t know, Michael.”His hand stayed wrapped around mine, strong and steady, but I felt the slight tremble in it. I could feel the tension radiating off him. He was scared. Scared I would pull away for good.A gust of wind slipped through the slightly open window, carrying in the smell of sea salt and night. I closed my e

Michael's POV I was trying so hard to keep my eyes on the road, but my mind was miles ahead. The soft hum of the car engine was the only thing between us. But it didn’t feel empty. It felt full, like there were a thousand things waiting to be said, and neither of us knew where to begin.Like I said before, I didn’t know what I was doing or where we were going to go. Not exactly. But I knew one thing for certain was that I wasn’t taking her back to that house.I wasn’t driving her back to those people who called themselves family. Not after what I had seen. Not after what they had done. She needed a new home. A safe place. Something clean. Something hers. And I had the means to give her all of it.Everything I owned—my company, my assets, my resources—they didn’t mean anything if I couldn’t use them to protect her. To rebuild what I helped break. If Scarlett was willing, I would give her everything.Just then, a soft voice broke through my thoughts. “Michael… you still haven't told me
