61. DIGGING DEEP

We both knew they were the people after me. I didn’t need to tell her anything, but the fact that I appeared tattered and unkempt out of the blue at almost midnight gave her the idea that something must be up and that I had come to her for protection.

“I will take care of them. Just hide well in the basement,” she said to me and nudged me into the stairs.

She waited for me to get to a safe distance before closing the lid and covering it with the rug that was placed there. The basement was only known to the both of us. In fact, it took me several years to find out that there was a basement in the house.

I heard the door open and the men rush in before Martin's voice sounded amidst the ruckus.

“Keep calm. We are not here to cause any trouble. Remember who she is to the boss,” he gave a stern warning, and the disturbing noises ceased instantly.

“Good evening, ma'am.”
