Nico
“Lit the fire…Nico…” his voice was cold as ice, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of the terrified little eight-year-old boy. “Be a man…lit the fire. You’re Alessandro Baldocchi’s son. Don’t be a pussy…”
“Please…don’t do this….” the young woman tied to the pole wailed. “Please Alessandro…I will leave…I will take him and go away…please…”
“Too late for that bitch,” his father sneered. “You have caused me enough pain in the ass. You really thought I would be interested in making a fucking whore like you my wife? You dared blackmail Alessandro Baldocchi…you fucking whore. Go ahead Nico, light the fire.”
“No…I…I can’t.” the boy whimpered, trembling with fear.
“What?” he roared, his eyes blazing with fury. “What did you say?”
“Please le…let me go…go…father. Pl….” the poor boy couldn’t complete the rest as a resounding slap landed on his right cheek, shaking his entire world with appalling pain. It almost sent him flying across the floor. His father grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up, his eyes burning with anger.
“Listen you little piece of shit,” he hissed. “You’re Nicholas Baldocchi, don Alessandro Baldochhi’s son and the heir to the Baldochhi legacy. I won’t have you raised as a sissy. You have two choices, Nicholas. Either you do as I ask and light the fire or…you watch as I beat your mother to death. What would you want?”
“No….” the boy sobbed, trembling with fear. “No, don't hurt mommy…”
“I don’t want to but if you don’t man up and do as I ask, I will be forced to,” his father said. “Now my son, are you going to light the fire?” The boy swallowed, glanced at the wailing woman tied to the post and slowly nodded.
“Yes,”
“Good boy…then do it,” He let him go and one of his scary looking men handed him a burning log of wood.
“Good luck, little capo…” he gave him a dark smile.
“Just throw the log in the pile of hay, Nico. That’s all you need to do,” his father whispered in his ear. “Go…do it.”
“No…please no! Please no…I have a little boy…he will be alone without me…please…” the tied-up woman shouted, trying her best to break free.
“Don’t worry, we’ll take care of that bastard too,” Alessandro laughed. “Now, Nicholas…do it. On the count of three, okay?”
“One…” everyone started to count.
“Two….”
“Three…” the boy threw the burning log into the pile of hay and in split second terrifying screams erupted through the air. Nico stood there, trembling and sobbing and watching as the fire…
Engulfed the woman alive.
I pinched my temples, the annoying headache just refusing to let me catch a breath. It’s been going on since I woke up at five, drenched in sweat, thanks to the same, old fucking dream. And now I have to get dressed and go to a damn party. All I wanted was to go home, pour myself a fucking good drink and well… that’s it. I hissed as another painful tremor throbbed through my temple and then glanced at the photographs lying on my desk, my eyes fixating on that weird symbol for the hundredth time today.
“Any idea what that might be?” Domani demanded. I had almost forgotten he was sitting here.
“You are my advisor, shouldn’t you be telling me that?” I raised a brow at him. His handsome face scrunched up in distaste as he gave me a look.
“I am your advisor, not a secret agent,” he grumbled. “But I can say it’s some kind of warning, so we must decipher it.”
“That’s genius, Domani. How come I couldn’t think of that?” I said sarcastically. “I know that’s a warning, idiot. What I want to know is what is it trying to say and who has suddenly grown the balls to leave a warning to me?”
“It isn’t anyone local…as in from our area of control,” he said. “None of the other families have anything to do with a symbol like this. None of them have any insignia like this, or any trademark…nothing.”
“You have checked thoroughly?”
“Yes capo,” I took a deep breath and nodded, rubbing my face hard.
“Keep looking. And I believe no update on finding those who destroyed our shipment?” I demanded and at least Domani had the curtesy to lower his gaze and look embarrassed as he shook his head.
“No, no leads. My men searched it all,” he answered.
“Well, they didn’t just appear out of thin air and then disappeared, Domani. So, either your men are idiots or ghosts destroyed our goods and killed over a dozen of our men,” I snapped. “Don’t feed me this bullcrap,”
“I will keep’em looking,” Domani mumbled. “But Nico…we really need to find another way because trust me, my men have tried.”
“I have another way,” I said. “But it’s not something any of us are going to like. That’s why I am asking you to figure this shit out.”
“Ohkay…and what is the other way, just curious,” he inquired. I stopped whirling the paper weight between my fingers and finally dragged my eyes away from the photographs lying on my table.
“Then we monitor the shipment ourselves…discreetly. And at the right moment, catch whoever is messing with my business red handed,” I answered.
“That can be risky, capo,” Domani warned.
“That’s why I said you aren’t going to like it,” I rolled my eyes. “Your men better do a good work of finding the smugglers out within the next three days, Domani because the next shipment leaves in three days. If I don’t get the bastard locked and chained in the torture room before that…then you know,” Domani looked a bit pale, his face scrunching up in distaste as he gave me a subtle nod.
“Yes, capo,” he murmured.
“Good. Now go and get ready. We would be leaving for the party in an hour and half,”
“Right. Forgot all about that,” he shook his head. “Are you going to tell Leonardo and Xavier about this?
“I have to. We are allies and who knows, it could be a matter of time before they start attacking the Ammassari as well,” I murmured. “I will talk to them after the Council meeting tomorrow.”
“Sounds good,” Domani agreed. “See you at the party then.”
“Ciao,” I said, lightening a cigarette.
“Aren’t you leaving? Please don’t tell me you will be attending a party at the Ammassari mansion looking like that?” I threw him a look and he held up his hand in defense. “Just saying,”
“Daria will bring in my suit. I am getting ready here and then picking up Gianna later,”
“Why?” he gave me a suspicious look.
“Because I want to,” I snapped, irritated by his and Caelian’s never-ending questions. “Now get out please.”
Domani murmured something under his breath but thankfully walked out of my office. I rubbed my face and then rang Daria, my assistant, to bring me my suit bag while I took a quick shower in the built-in bathroom in my office. Standing under warm torrents, I tried to think of ways to deal with Gianna after last night. I keep hurting and disappointing her over and over again. But then she keeps pushing my buttons too.
Why can’t she just be? Why does she have to know more? And why can’t she just see me for who I was instead of looking at me with those rose-tinted glasses of hers where everything in the world was just good and pure? I was not the right person for her, and it terrified the daylights out of me when she looked at me with her eyes brimming with love. She was just making this harder for both of us.
“Do you need anything else, signor?” Daria peeked into my office.
“No thanks,” I muttered, adjusting my tie. “You can leave.”
I noticed her gaze lingering on me for way longer than I appreciated before she murmured good night and left. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. It was high time she stopped batting her lashes at me. Especially now that I was married. Regardless of whatever the situation this marriage was, I was married to one of the most gorgeous women I have seen in my entire life.
Sharp at 7:30 I was waiting outside the Baldocchi mansion for Gianna. Her three personal bodyguards whom Caelian introduced to her earlier this afternoon—Carlo, Matteo and Carina were also waiting along with me, standing still as bloody statues. Even their eyelids barely moved. But they were extremely good at what they did and that was the whole point. With everything going on, I couldn’t take a risk on Gianna’s safety. And she wasn’t like….I halted before the name could prop into my brain.
No, Nico…don’t go there. Not now.
Just then, the double doors opened and as my eyes fell on her, everything else just faded away on its own.
Gianna stepped outside, and for a second, I forgot how to fucking breathe.
That dress—if I could even call it that—was sin stitched into fabric. Gold, liquid, clinging to every dip, every curve, flowing over her like it had been poured onto her body. The soft evening light made it shimmer, highlighting the way it hugged her waist, the way it dipped low on her back, teasing bare skin and delicate laces I suddenly wanted to undo with my teeth.
Heat coiled low in my stomach, sharp and unwanted.
I shouldn’t be looking at her like this.
I shouldn’t be thinking about how easy it would be to slide my hands over the soft material, to slip the delicate straps that barely held the shimmering material together down her shoulders and see if she was wearing anything beneath. I shouldn’t be imagining her pressed up against the car, her breath hitching as I feasted on her lips while my hand explored her soft, smooth skin—fuck.
I clenched my jaw, forcing the thought away, forcing myself to focus on anything but the way her hips swayed with every step as she walked over to me, her beautiful golden hair bouncing. Man, I really still didn’t understand why she would want someone like me when she could simply have anyone.
“I am sorry I’m a bit late,” Gianna murmured, her voice even. She was still angry and rightfully so.
“It’s a party thrown for you. You can’t ever be late,” I said.
“Thrown for us…” she rectified and I could feel her hesitation, something nibbling at her as she lower her gaze and bit her lips, bristling with tension. What was she so worried about? I gently clasped my fingers on her chin and lifted her face to meet my gaze.
“What is it?” I asked softly.
“We better…do a good job at the party tonight,” she mumbled. “Leonardo will be watching and I…I don’t want any mess. Just play along for tonight…please.”
The way she said those words, how small and defeated she sounded, made me feel fifty shades of disgusted with myself. She shouldn’t have to beg me to play the role of a doting husband in front of her family. I took the vow to be that, to care for her, love her and yet here I was, messing up at every step of the way.
“What do you want from me?” I demanded. “Tell me and I will try my best…” Innocent, dark eyes peeked up at me and she looked so sad as she gave me a shrug. I really didn’t like the way she looked at me.
“Just pretend like you care and that I…matter,” she whispered. “And that there is some love, some chemistry between us. That would be enough.” She gave me a look and started to climb into the car. But I grabbed her hand and halted her, and Gianna blinked as I pulled her closer, crashing her slim, delicate frame against mine.
“Do you really think that little of me?” I said, holding her gaze. “That I don’t care at all?”
“I don’t really know what to think, Nico,” she said, her eyes filled with disappointment that felt like a knife twisting in my chest. “Let’s go, we are getting late.”
She moved away from my grip and climbed into the car, and I took a deep breath, settling myself before following suit. Gianna immediately turned her focus out of the window, sitting far away from me, not saying a single word. I knew I owed her some clarity and a really good apology. But how many times was I going to apologize to her anyway? What can I even say? She wanted honesty, she wanted to know about her. And this was one truth I could never tell her.
Gianna cannot find out who I was in love with because if she did…things would go very, very wrong.
The Ammassari mansion was adorned with lights that could be seen from miles away. A seemingly endless line of luxury cars filled the driveway as guests arrived for the event. This party was not only in celebration of my wedding to Gianna, but also to mark the second anniversary of the peace treaty signed between the Ammassari and Baldocchi families. We entered through the private back entrance to avoid the crowd of guests and security gathered at the front. As soon as we came to a stop, I pressed a button to activate the privacy screen before Gianna could get out of the car.“What happened?” she demanded, turning to me.“If we need to convince Leonardo…we would need to do a fucking good job,” I said.“That’s what I said,” Gianna muttered, looking blank. I shook my head and with a slight tug of her hand, I pulled her closer until she was almost sitting on my lap. Her dark eyes widened in surprise, hands pressed on my chest to support herself.“Wh…what are you doing?” she mumbled.“Acti
Gianna“Okay, what surprise do you have?” I asked eagerly as both my brothers dragged me away.“You can’t stay calm, can you?” Leonardo rolled his eyes.“You tell me there’s a surprise for me and then expect me to be calm?” I snorted in response. “No, can do, sir.”“Grow up then, you’re married now,” Leonardo made a face, shaking his head.“Look who’s talking,” Xavier quipped. “The man who still gets jealous when his wife gives more attention to his kids.”I burst out laughing as Xavier gave me a wink while Leonardo held up his middle finger for his elder brother. I watched as they both playfully bickered, and it hit me how much I missed them. And it has been what? One day? At the same time, I remembered Vittoria’s words about how Nico grew up all alone and it made me wonder if he had a sister or brother, maybe he could have been more open. I cannot imagine my life without Leonardo and Xavier in it.“Okay here we are…” Leonardo halted in front of a door.“There better be more than ju
Gianna Oh goodness. This was not good.“My name is Maximus Vanucci,” he said, giving me a cool smile as I stared wide-eyed at him. “And you’re?”“Gianna!” Leonardo’s booming voice answered his question before I could.“Gianna…” he tested my name around his tongue like trying some new flavor of candy, drawing it out in a way that made my otherwise very ordinary name sound kind of…exquisite? What the fuck?“Will you please let me go?” I muttered, reaching my limit of mortification.“You mean let you drop to the floor?” Maximus demanded. “Are you sure? It will hurt really bad.” I pressed my lips together to fight the scowl and thankfully managed to stand up on my own, moving out of his grip. And whatever expensive cologne he was wearing.“Thank you for helping,” I mumbled, smoothing out my dress.“The pleasure was all mine,” he smirked again. Was he making fun of me?“Gianna…what the fuck?” Leonardo thundered, examining me at arm's length. “Why did you run out like that? Are you hurt?”
Gianna“Nico… what the hell?” I gasped, heart still racing.“Why are you sleeping here?” he asked, his voice hoarse, his appearance just as wrecked.“I…” My words faltered as my gaze dropped to the floor. Blood. There were droplets pooling beneath him. His hands rested on his thighs, and the right one was loosely wrapped in a handkerchief, completely soaked through. What the hell?“Oh my God—what happened to your hand?” I rushed to him, nausea rising in my throat at the metallic tang of blood. There was so much of it. “Nico!”“It’s nothing,” he muttered, pulling his hand back.“Are you crazy?” I snapped. He flinched slightly at my tone, startled. “Look at all this blood and tell me that again. Are you insane? Nico, what the fuck happened?”He was silent for a beat before letting out a sigh. “I slammed my hand on the car window.”“You… what?” I stared at him, incredulous.“Stop panicking, Gianna. Go to sleep,” he said, trying to light a cigarette with his left hand.I snatched it from
Nico My fucking hand still hurts and whatever painkiller that bloody doctor gave still made me groggy as I sat up and rubbed my face, cursing when I accidentally ended up using the injured hand. Last night was shit—well except for some parts.Caelian had called just when I was starting to relax with Gianna on the dance floor after Amara pissed me off earlier, lecturing me about not messing up with Gianna for the hundredth time. And then watching her and Leonardo dance, that was like a fucking knife being twisted in my chest. Yes, it was Amara. I have been in love with Amara—Gianna’s beloved sister-in-law—for the last eighteen years. That was a truth Gianna could never find out. It would not just destroy her but also the beautiful bond she had with Amara and God knows what else. But that wasn’t it. Caelian had called with yet another devastating news. Someone had lit a fire in one of my warehouses and killed four of my men who were on guard. And again, there was that symbol painted in
NicoThankfully, Gianna had calmed down enough when we headed downstairs for breakfast. Mirella was chirping away in her happy world, and the aroma of fresh coffee did wonders to lift my mood.“I like her,” Gianna smiled.“She is very reliable,” I agreed.“You have no problem taking her help,” she muttered, and there was something about her tone.Wait…was she jealous of my housekeeper?“I don’t know how to cook…” I answered, slightly amused. “Or the other stuff she helps me out with.”“Ah, so something you don’t know then.” I fought the smirk that threatened as she gave me a look before scampering ahead, greeting Mirella with a bright smile who seemed all too pleased to see her until her eyes fell on me."Oh mio Dio!” she exclaimed, rushing over to me. “What happened to you?”“Nothing.” I rolled my eyes at the exaggerated reaction. Were all women like this? “Just an accident.”“There is always some accident,” she grimaced, shaking her head. “You never take care of yourself, signor. Co
Gianna “Oh, I missed this so much,” Teresa sighed, holding up her face against the sun, her red hair sparkling in the sunlight. We had selected a sea-view restaurant for our lunch with outdoor seating since it was such a gorgeous day. The sun felt so good on my skin, and for once since the wedding, I felt relaxed and more like myself. With Nico, there’s always this underlying tension prickling under my skin. He is so intense and downright intimidating. But sitting here with my best friend, enjoying the sun and a crisp wine was really what I needed to unwind a bit. Especially after an eventful morning today."Or I'll forget I'm supposed to be a gentleman… and show you exactly what happens when my wife begs for ruin." I gulped and quickly took a large sip of my wine to satiate my parched throat. My wife, Nico has acknowledged me as his wife for the first time since the wedding and not out of obligation. And that threat…I bit my lip, wondering how long it would take for me to break him
GiannaIt was almost five in the evening when I came back home. And the moment I stepped into the bedroom, a gigantic bouquet of stunning red and white tulips resting on the coffee table greeted me. They were gorgeous and I loved tulips. Did Nico send these? I snorted at the idea. Flowers probably weren’t his thing.I walked over and smiled leaning down to inhale its lovely scent. They were fresh and absolutely gorgeous. But who sent them? I shuffled amongst the flowers and found a small envelope nestled within. Frowning, I opened it and inside lay a pretty pink handwritten card.Dear Gianna, I hope you like the flowers. They are as beautiful as you. Yours, Maximus Vanucci. I blinked, my eyes scanning the content again. What? What was this supposed to mean? Was this some kind of joke?“Mirella,” I called the good housekeeper, my eyes still glued to the flowers. “Mirella!” Sounds of rushing footsteps reached me as she burst inside, her eyes wide with panic.“Is everything alright,
NicoDomani was right on time.I stared at the twenty-four-page document and cracked my neck. Time to get to work.Name: Maximus Emanuele Vanucci Age: 29Blood group: B+ Sunsign: ScorpioHeight: 6’2Father Name: Renzo Salvatore Vanucci I read word for word of each page twice, and two hours and two cups of black coffee later, I was done. And disappointed.Maximus Vanucci was the CEO and owner of Bellavanti, the global fashion brand. And that was just the icing on his qualifications, experience, awards and those goddam
NicoGianna was doing squats using weights, and because I was standing behind her I got the honor to enjoy a first class view of her fine ass. She wore those sexy tight gym pants and sports bra and my cock threatened to jump to attention every time she did a squat and then came up. I couldn’t stop myself from imagining how it would feel if she moved up and down my cock like that. Would that feel just as good as she felt last night?“Fuck,” Gianna hissed and I noticed her posture was wrong. She can get a sprain that way. I pushed the door open fully and stepped inside, and amidst the music and her struggle, she didn’t hear me.“Your posture is wrong,” I murmured, my voice low as I came up behind her. Gianna stiffened but didn’t stop.“I don’t need your help,” she muttered, her tone sharp. Of course, she was still mad at me. And rightfully so.Ignoring her protest, I slid my hands around her bare waist, feeling the warmth of her skin under my palms. She sucked in a sharp breath, but I d
Nico“Leonardo and Xavier have left,” Caelian muttered.I stood by the pool, watching the soft spring wind make ripples on its clean surface and nodded. We were at one of my farmhouses on the outskirts of the city. Leo and Xavier had come over to discuss matters about last night. And to plan our strategy for tomorrow.Another shipment of mine is expected to move, and this was the cue we were waiting for. Tomorrow, we'll grab those bastards by hook or by crook. We have to. From damaging our shipments to attacking me right in public out of nowhere was concerning. There weren’t many people I could think of who would dare take on the Baldocchi like that. And Gianna’s safety was at risk…that was bugging me the most. Not only could she have been severely injured, but we have no leads either. I have never felt so helpless and cornered ever before. But that changes tomorrow. I can’t rest until I have one of them locked up and beaten half to death in my torture room. I had some really innovati
Gianna I can’t believe this was happening. Did I hear him right?“What happened between us…Nico?” I asked, trying to sound steady because I refuse to let his words break me. Nico closed his eyes, as if gathering his patience or strengthening the walls around his heart.“It was a mistake…it shouldn’t have happened,” he said, his voice hard.“And why is that a mistake?” I demanded. “You made love to your wife…the woman you married and took the vows to spend the rest of your life with…what exactly is a mistake in that?”Nico’s eyes darkened, rage brimming in them. But I knew it wasn’t directed at me. For whatever possible reason, he was angry at himself. I blinked, holding my ground as he stepped towards me, his jaw clenched, his whole stance like that of a
Gianna “Nicholas! Gianna!”I jolted awake at the booming voice, my heart hammering against my ribs. Blinking against the harsh sunlight that poured through the gap in the curtains, I groaned. My head was still groggy, my limbs heavy with exhaustion.“Nico! Gianna!”A man’s voice. Familiar. Why did it sound so—Beside me, Nico lay sprawled on his stomach, one arm thrown over his head, his breathing deep and steady. My gaze drifted over the intricate ink that stretched across his back, the bold, dark tattoos covering the sculpted muscles. And then I saw them.My nail prints.Oh, fuck.My face burned as last night came rushing back, the memories slamming into me all at once. My b
Song: Not Afraid Anymore (Halsey) GiannaWhen I opened my eyes, there was no roaring sound of gunshots going on or tires screeching. It was all peacefully silent. Was I dreaming? I turned my head, and the throbbing pain in my temples and my entire body in general screamed that I wasn’t. It all happened. The chase…the firing…the attack…Nico firing…wait—Nico.I sat up on my bed and looked around. I was all alone.Where was Nico?Panic rushed through me with such a fury that I almost felt nauseous. I remember Caelian taking me away. But Nico…he was still there. My stomach was in knots. But before I could do anything about it, I heard something.Voices. Downstairs. My heart lurched.I didn’t think—I just moved, pushing off the bed, my legs unsteady as I rushed out of the room. My head still ached from where I’d hit it, my body sluggish from exhaustion, but none of it mattered. I gripped the stair railing as I hurried down, my breath coming short, panic curling inside me like a vice. Th
GiannaI think I am going to throw up.“Fuck,” Nico hissed, and I almost cried out, jolting forward as he pressed the gas and the car wheezed forward at top speed. But sadly, it was an empty road and the SUV didn’t waste time picking up. If there had been traffic, we might have had some cover, but the highway stretched out empty ahead of us, the darkness offering no protection.Nico’s face was stone-hard as he jabbed at the dial pad, trying another number. The ringing droned on, unanswered. His grip on the wheel tightened, his frustration rolling off him in waves.“Fuck!” he snarled, making me flinch. And then, without warning—He yanked the wheel. The Escalade lurched violently to the right, tires screeching against the asphalt as we cut into a narrow side street. My body slammed against the door, a choked gasp ripping from my throat.“Nico, calm down!” I shouted, my voice unsteady. Probably not the right thing to say in a situation like this. He barely spared me a glance before whi
GiannaThe entire dining room was bedecked in candles and red roses. Beyond the table in the center that was set with immaculate cutlery, a bottle of champagne resting in an ice bucket and god knows what else was the glass wall that looked out at the Mediterranean, the serene water splashing with waves now and then. It was peaceful and oh-so-romantic. Nico stepped in beside me, and his eyes widened, a blank look falling on his face. I don’t think he was expecting this.“This is beautiful,” I murmured in appreciation.“Caelian must have done this,” he grimaced.“Yeah, this doesn’t seem like it would be your thing. Especially not red roses and candles.” I made a face, unable to hide my sarcasm as I walked over to the glass wall. It was beautiful outside.“I don’t do romance.” Nico’s voice was hard, laced with a warning that made me press my legs together. I inhaled deeply and then turned to face him.“What do you do then?” I asked, challenging him. His dark eyes met mine, and I almost f
Gianna“Well, don’t you think it’s a bit weird?” Teresa demanded over the phone. I had called her to spill about what happened with Maximus earlier. Like me, she seemed a bit skeptical too.“I did think that,” I nodded, eyes glued to the proposal I had been working on for two hours now.“And?”“But then when he said that I had to go through a proper process of evaluation, it didn’t seem so weird. I mean he did hear my and Leo’s conversation last night.”“Hmm…” Teresa muttered. “Well, what’s the worst that can happen if we give it a try?”“Exactly!”“If you’re in then so am I. But listen—you have to go to this meeting alone tomorrow. I already promised Nonna I would take her to this thing—wait…what was that thing? Well, whatever it is, I can’t cancel on the old bird. She is just starting to forgive me for coming back home after being away for so long. And I want that expensive, antique diamond necklace she owns once she dies so I need to be in her good graces, Gi.”I giggled at the men
