Nikolai
“Hey, Nikolai!” Hope says cheerfully.
“Uhm, hi. Good morning.” I said, surprised by her sudden cheerfulness.
“Why do you looked so shocked?” She says, laughing.
“You seem so energetic” I tell her. It kinda sounds wrong to say I’m surprised she’s happy. Like she’s not supposed to be happy. When that is all I wanted her to be.
“Well, I guess the beach gave me enough vitamin sea.”
I raised an eyebrow at her. “Ha ha very funny.”
“Come on, humor me for a bit. I’m never good at making jokes.”
“More like you never did.” I corrected her. I’ve never heard a joke from her and now she comes up with a lame one.
“That’s why I’m trying.” She said, giving me the puppy dog eyes.
“Well, you should put in more effort on the delivery.” I tell
Xavier“Hey, what’s up?” Jasmine says as she catches up to me as I was walking out of campus heading for home. We were in our senior year and things weren’t going too well with my parents. My grades were dropping and I was losing all motivation. Not that I had one to begin with. If there’s one thing they’ve been giving me, that was pressure.“Hi.” I tell her dully. Jasmine was way smaller than me but her presence is big. She’s smart, everyone knows that. But still, it seemed like she doesn’t want to draw attention to herself. She would have been famous in school but she prefers to keep a small group of friends. In the high school world where everyone likes to brag about almost everything and anything, she doesn’t talk much about herself either. She’s a mystery to many and even I am surprised how not a lot of people can approach her but once you do, it’s so easy to talk to
Nikolai“What are we doing back in Clyde?” Hope asked as the familiar scenery unfolded before us.“You said you wanted to learn how to shoot.” I tell her.“Really?” She says, her eyes were practically gleaming.“For a girl who cried because I was hunting, you’re too excited.” I say, flicking her forehead. She’s just too cute sometimes.“Well, I’m not hunting animals, I’m just shooting.” She says, rubbing her forehead. “Oh, and I don’t want to shoot trees either.”I laughed. She’s too harmless. She won’t hurt animals and plants. But then again she was able to kill that guy using her own hands. Ivan has purposely left out teaching her knife skills so far and she hasn’t mentioned it. I don’t think she’s eager to relive those memories yet.“No, we won’t be shooting trees. I&rsq
Nikolai“Is Hope not ready yet?” I asked Ivan as I put on my suit and tie. Like with any other clothing in the world, this designer suit is crafted from the most expensive materials. Created by Stuart Hughes in collaboration with Richard Jewels, the suit took more than 800 hours to design. What makes the design more interesting is the price of the suit which starts from US$ 778,290. Made from Cashmere wool, silk, and 480.5-carat diamonds the fabric of the clothing is smooth to touch and has a perfect finish. Also, to top it all there are only three pieces of this suit in the world which makes it pricey.“Not yet, sir. Natasha is attending to her.” Ivan tells me. Natasha hired professional makeup and hairstylists to dress up Hope and there’s no way she’s leaving them with her. She’s like a mother duck who needs to keep Hope under her wing at all times. She didn’t talk to me for a week after Hope was kidnapped
XavierIt’s been a while since I’ve been to Los Angeles. NYC is exactly how you imagine it. LA is not. NYC is a better experience to visit. It opens itself up quickly. LA requires you to earn it. It reveals itself only if you are curious and if you make the effort. How long has that been? It was Christmas before freshman year that I last saw Jasmine. It has been two years since then. I went home last year too, but I didn’t see her. She never contacted me either. I checked my messages but they were still left unread. Did she went on a social media hibernation? But still she never forgets to reach out to me once in a while. I scrolled through our message history and true enough, the last messages were sent two years ago. I don’t know how I didn’t manage to notice that too much time have passed since I last saw or talked to her. I’ve been too busy, was all that I could say, but that was no excuse either. If only Hope didn&rs
Xavier“Xavier, you have to come home. Now.” John, my younger brother, says as I was driving towards our house. I was still in Los Angeles and I was planning to stay here for a couple of days. And now here he goes telling me to come back to New York when I haven’t had any time to rest for the day.“What do you mean I have to come home?” I asked him. I’m still having this terrible headache from trying to figure out what the hell happened to Jasmine and my whole body is sore from driving and walking around.“I think Mom and Dad messed up for real this time.” He says, he sounded really worried, which was weird because Johnny was nothing but the epitome of fun, while I’m stuck carrying all the responsibilities as the first son.“Okay, tell me exactly what happened.” I tell him. If he’s just over reacting I might as well take a much deserved vacation home alone and teach him
XavierHow did my life turn out to be like this? I thought as I stared at the ceiling of our luxurious suite. This swanky hotel is tucked in One57, one of the city's tallest and most talked about residences. Stellar service, pin-drop quiet rooms, a sumptuous spa and modern but feel-good interior spaces fashion this Hyatt flagship as one of New York's pacesetters among true luxury.I can’t believe how my family acts as if we’re on a vacation. As if sealing a deal magically solves all of our problems. It feels like we’re selling our soul to a demon to live a good life only to be eaten out in the end.Brad Powell offered partnership to my family but we refused it. And yet we reached out to Nikolai Alexeev, who was just the same as him. No wonder he’s pissed enough to drive us into a corner. Now, we’re left with no choice but to ally between one of those two.Either way, we’ll be seen as one or the othe
XavierUgh, it feels like my head is going to break. I thought as I blinked my eyes open. All I can remember is that I dropped off Hope and something knocked me out on the head and I blacked out. I squinted my eyes until I realized I’m in some sort of abandoned warehouse. My hands were tied to a chair and I struggled against them but I only managed to scrape the skin on my wrists.“Hey, we’ve waited a while.” A guy says, coming closer to me, his face hovering in front of me. I have no idea who he is. “Hey, somebody tell boss our little guy is up.” He yells to his comrades behind him. There were at least six of them. At least, the ones I see.“What the fuck do you guys need?” I said.I grunted as he grabbed my head and forced my head to look up at him.“I don’t know about that.” He says. “Lift your head, I have to show you something.”I can’t hel
Xavier“So, did you find out anything?” I asked when I met up with Chris at the annex office of our hospital. It’s been twenty four hours and Hope hasn’t woken up yet. I would have been worried but her doctor, Mia Fernandez, assured me that it was her body’s typical response to trauma and stress. Nobody is allowed in her room except her brother, her doctor who double checks everything we give to her, and her guards.“We did dig deeper into Hope Alexeev.” Chris started. “We verified her documents and although they were as authentic as they can be. They were only created two years ago.”“And we also looked for the other girl who disappeared two years ago. We found her records and by keenly examining the fingerprints and comparing them with that of Hope Alexeev’s, they will have no way to deny that they were the same person.”“What happened to her exactly?&rdquo
Jasmine / Hope “Now let me be a little more courageous.” I said, kissing him ever so lightly on the lips. “Why are you behaving so adorably?” He says, as he spun me around and pinned me beneath him. Kissing me deeply, his tongue caressing mine. Why does he make me lose control? I thought as he hugged me closer, leaving trails of fire on my skin everywhere he touched. When I hold him like this, I want him even closer. When his lips touched mine, time seemed to have stopped. My heart thumped in my chest. I can only focus on the softness of his mouth, how exciting it is to capture all his senses. It's not clear if I was dreaming, but the way his fingers closed on mine was pure emotion. I half-opened his eyes, looking at him every time he came back to take a breath, to make sure it was more than just imagination. I wasn’t certain if nature rooted for this second or if my thoughts tricked me into a great present, howe
Jasmine / Hope One year later It’s been a year since Nikolai left. My life has been peaceful ever since. Peaceful and ordinary. I still live as Hope Alexeev. But no one is coming after me now. Nikolai left to make sure he doesn’t put my life in danger again. “Heya there, Hope.” Casper greeted me, as I met with them at our usual spot at Washington Park. “We’re just talking to Xavier over here.” “Hi.” I said greeting Xavier. It didn’t surprise me that Nikolai talked to Xavier before he went away. But it kind of feels unfair that he didn’t come see me before leaving. I don’t know. I could have at least talked to him one last time. See his face for the last time. Convinced him to stay. I guess he’s afraid I would be able to do just that. He could never say no to me. Not especially when he wants the same thing that I want. That is to be together. “How are you doing?” Xavier asks, he visits me more often lately. I think
Nikolai “How long has it been, Nikolai?” Aleil says greeting me at the dock. “I was surprised when I received your call.” Aleil looked the same. With those round rimmed glasses and three piece suit. “Hey, Aleil. You’re looking well.” I commented, as I walked past him, taking the gun from underneath his coat and pointing it at his head. Of course the people who were with him pointed their guns at me as well. “Glad you came, Aleil.” I said, right behind him. “Why did you think I have forgiven you?” Aleil did not say anything. Just fixed his glasses. “Just kidding. I bet you left this thing unloaded.” I said, throwing the gun away. I could tell just by it’s weight that it’s unloaded. He definitely left the magazine empty on purpose. It’s funny how he knew what kind of prank I would pull when we see each other. “What do you want?” He asked. “How about a drink?” I say. “I didn’t think we
Nikolai As soon as I heard those words from his lips I knew exactly what I had to do. Hope’s father probably couldn’t do anything about what’s happening now but I could. Although I’m not sure what it will cost me but I’m willing to risk everything for Hope. “I understand.” I tell him. “Looks like you’ve thought of a way out of this mess.” Joseph Smith says. “As a matter of fact, I do.” I tell him, standing up and getting ready to leave. I should make that call as soon as I can. “I can’t say it’s a pleasure to meet you.” I said, as I stepped out the door. “But thanks for the information.” There was no hostility in his demeanor, and for a moment there seem to be a tinge of gratitude on his face. “Go do what I can’t do for her.” I stood there for a bit after he closed the door. I guess that was his way of thanking me for protecting her daughter although he would never admit that he failed to do the same for her. Hop
Jasmine / Hope I stood in front of the door, thinking if I should knock or not. Well, I think I was raised with enough good manners and right conduct, so I guess I’ll knock, after all. I raised my hand and tapped gently at the door. It would have been safer to do this since who knows what he’ll do if I suddenly barged into the room. He might just kill me himself. Again. Plus, I’m not even sure if the door was unlocked in the first place. I heard footsteps approach the door. For someone as skilled as my father, I always wondered why he always makes such noise whenever he walks. Or maybe he was doing that on purpose. Whereas I always need to be as silent as a ghost. I glanced at the camera in front of the house. The apartment is very much like our own on the outside. I could hear him unlock the door and release the chain on the double lock. Yeah, we had that one in the house too. He opened the door and there in front of me, was a male and
Jasmine / Hope“Oh, wow.” Mom says as she stared at the private jet waiting for us. I can’t blame her, dad barely gave us the bare minimum. Yet here comes Nikolai more than ready to offer me the world at my feet.“Yeah, mom. Get used to it.” I tell her as we boarded the plane.“Hope, dear.” Natasha greeted me at the entrance. It’s obvious she’s been waiting for me all this time.“Natasha!” I cried, rushing towards her to envelope her in a hug. “ya skuchayu po tebe (I missed you)”“Me too, Nadia.” She says, kissing the top of my head. “Tol'ko predstav'te moy uzhas, kogda mne skazali, chto vy sbezhali iz bol'nitsy. (Just imagine my horror when they told me you ran away from the hospital.)”“I’m sorry.” I tell her. “I didn’t mean to worry you.”“It’s okay, dear.” She tel
Jasmine / Hope“Who is this man?” My mom asks as soon as she saw Nikolai.“This is Nikolai, mom.” I tell her. “Nikolai, this is my mom.”“Nice to meet you Mrs Curtis.” Nikolai says, offering his hand.“Please, just call me Sanya.” Mom says, shaking his hand. She did look impressed. I mean, who wouldn’t be impressed by Nikolai? “And I’m not a Mrs., I’m still a Ms. I didn’t actually marry Jasmine’s father.”I don’t see the point in mom tell him all that stuff, Nikolai obviously knows. He’s done his homework. He was just trying to be polite.“And this is Ivan.” I said, ushering him in. Ivan is the person who keeps tabs on me twenty four hours, it’s just proper for her to meet him. He’s like an uncle to me.“My pleasure to meet you, Ms. Curtis.” Ivan says. H e obviously heard w
Jasmine / HopeThe hospital is like a dreamlike landscape: you will be forgotten as if you have never been between two visits, but you are immediately familiar the moment you return. As if they were always there, waiting for you when you were away. The endless branching corridors and circular nursing stations look like the endless labyrinth. Remember that it takes a day or two to get from the corridor to the room. In order not to impress the human brain, they cut themselves into your long-term memory. When you go through the door, you sometimes see a pile of Mylar balloons or a few pale and withered legs. Hospital beds are now in line with the predictions of science fiction, and patients’ vital signs are digitally displayed on the ceiling. Nurses no longer wear white stockings and hats with red crosses in cartoons and pornography, but dresses with very interesting patterns: hearts, teddy bears, sun, flowers, and peace signs, which seem to be some kind of F
Jasmine / Hope“Where are we going, by the way?” I asked Nikolai as we merge onto US-101 N.“We’re going to Bakersfield.” Nikolai says. I turn my head to look at him. “I assume you would want to see your mother.”I just shrugged at him.“We could turn around if you don’t want to meet her.” Nikolai says.“No, it’s okay.” I tell him. “I just can’t let her die in anguish thinking her daughter is dead.”My mom and I were pretty close when I was a kid. Maybe because it was basically just the two of us living together for almost half of my life. She says I was very much like my dad. And I would always surprise her with the things I blurt out. Let’s just say those were not the kind of things you would definitely expect a kid to say. But oh well, I guess it was because I was my father’s daughter after all. My mom and dad’s
