CHAPTER TWO
ARIAThe hands that were on me suddenly disappeared, and I swiftly crawled away from the man and backed into the nearby wall."Scar," the robber's voice shook in fear as he fell to the ground. My breath hitched in my throat as two men immediately started punching the man that was on me a few minutes ago.I slowly lifted my head to look at the man that had saved me. He stood dangerously tall, with long hair framing his sculptured face. A dangerous scar slashed his eyebrows and ran down to his ear. I was locked in a staring contest with this strange man, and he was winning because I was finding it harder to keep looking into his gray eyes. The groaning sounds beside me intensified, and I turned to see that the creep who attacked me was on the floor, covered in blood."Please stop," I choked out. The two men that were hitting him didn't pay any attention to me.I looked at the man before me. "Please tell them to stop," I gritted with tears in my eyes. I didn't want the man to be killed, especially not because of me."Basta!" He ordered while still looking at me.I understood a little Italian, so I knew that he told them to stop. I exhaled sharply."Do you want to sit there forever?" He asked, and it took me a minute to realize the question was directed at me. His deep, gravelly voice filled my ears, and I was too shocked to respond."She might be in shock, boss," one of the men said with laughter in his voice. He shook his head, but a hint of a smile appeared on his lips. This man was ridiculously handsome, and I was making a fool of myself in his presence. He walked closer and I backed further into the wall. He didn't stop walking until his shoes were right before my body. Then he completely stole my breath my squatting before me. His rich scent filled my nose, and I found myself wanting to bury my nose in his neck."Are you in shock, Red?" He asked and I frowned. Why was he talking to me like I was a broken doll? And why did he call me Red?I cleared my throat. "I'm fine. I was just...rattled," I said as I tried to stand to my feet.In the blink of an eye, he stood to his full length and turned to go. No! I couldn't let him leave."Please wait," I called out.He slowly turned and his dark eyes regarded me."I-I don't have a-anywhere to go," I stammered. It was pathetic for me to ask this strange man for help, but I didn't have a choice."C-can you help me with some money?" I asked, thankful that he couldn't really see the embarassment on my face in the dark.He regarded me for a bit before saying firmly, "You're coming with me."I scoffed. "I don't even know you. What if you're a kidnapper?" I whispered into the night. He chuckled. "Kidnapper? Funniest thing I've heard all year."He looked at me again. "I don't have all night. You can either wander in the dark all night or come with me. Your choice."I silently picked up my suitcase again and followed him as he led me to a black Rolls Royce. I was completely speechless as he opened the door and gestured for me to get in. I didn't even know this man, yet I found myself completely hypnotized by him.I entered the back seat and he took the space beside me. My whole body felt warm and I felt engulfed by different emotions all at once. The car came to life and we got to a fancy hotel in no time. We came down from the car and I followed him as he led me to a hotel room. He took us inside and as the hotel workers dropped my luggage and turned to leave, he turned to follow them."Where are you going?" I asked in fear."I have a birthday party to attend," he said and looked at his wrist watch. "And I'm already late.""Please don't leave me," I blurted without thinking. I couldn't stay in his room alone. I was too scared. He clenched his jaw and fixed me a stare."You have five minutes."I quickly showered and changed into a simple yellow dress. He looked at me for longer than a second before taking his gaze off me and leaving the room. I exhaled the breath I didn't know I was holding as I followed him to the parking lot. The drive was short and soon, we got to our destination."We're here," he announced and I looked away from him. He stepped out of the car and opened the door for me. I shivered as the cold hit me again. He removed his suit jacket and placed it over my shoulder. I almost melted. We stepped into the building, and from the looks of it, it was a private club. Men in expensive suits and women in equally expensive and luxurious dresses that put my simple black dress to shame. Loud music blasted through the speakers as disco lights twirled on the ceiling. Several bodies in the dancefloor swayed to the music, and the rest were pressed against each other. He took my hand as he led me through the crowd."Scar, I didn't know you would be here," a male voice drawled.Scar. Two people had called him that. Was that his real name?We turned as the man got closer to us."Marco," Scar said in a low growl. They exchanged a firm handshake, and Scar had a dark look on his face. I had a feeling he didn't like Marco.Marco then turned to look at me. His eyes widened a bit and a look I couldn't recognize crossed his eyes, before he quickly his it with a smirk."Damn! She's one fine piece of ass," he said as he chuckled and looked at Scar. I opened my mouth to say something before Scar quickly moved face to face with the guy."Look her way again and you're dead," he said in a low growl.I gulped. Marco chuckled nervously."I was just joking, man.""I wasn't," Scar retorted."I need a drink," I murmured shakily as I walked off to a nearby bar.I asked for tequila and the bartender poured me a shot. I tipped my head back and poured the liquid into my mouth. I took a second glass and turned to see that Scar had taken the seat beside me."Never walk away from me like that," he warned and I gulped as I looked away from him.The next time I turned, I saw five empty shot glasses on the table before him. I frowned at him. He didn't even look drunk."That's enough," he said, grabbing my arm and preventing me from taking my fourth shot. My arm tingled where he touched, and suddenly I wanted his hands all over my body."Let's dance," I said drunkenly as I dragged him to the dance floor."I don't dance," he slurred in my ear, but his hands were on my waist. My breathing became laboured as I grinded against his hard frame. He held my waist firmly, and I admired the way he squeezed my dress in his big hands. I noticed black ink peeking out of the sleeves of his shirt. This man was dangerous, and I was dancing straight into his fire.I turned to face him and his hungry gaze met mine. Without thinking, I brought my fingers up to his face. Before they could make contact with his scar, he gripped my hand harshly."Don't try it," his guttural voice and I nervously dropped my hand."How did this happen?" I murmured and he smiled darkly."You don't want to know."Another shiver went through me, and I brought my face closer to his."How old are you?" He gritted out.His sharp jaw was clenched and he looked like he was restraining himself. His hooded gaze was fixed on my lips and I gulped."Turned twenty today. I'm not old enough to drink in America," I whispered."Thank God we're not in America then," he said as his lips captured mine. He pulled me into him with ease until I could no longer feel the cold ground. The heat of his mouth and tongue sent fire swirling through my veins, and my hands slid around his broad shoulders to pull him closer. His hand wrapped around the back of my neck and he pressed his body harder against me. It didn't take long before our kisses were frantic and urgent, and when I moaned softly at the feeling of his stubble scratching across my face, a soft grunt left his lips. He broke the kiss and I found myself reaching for his lips again. I didn't want it to stop."Let's leave," he rasped against my lips. He didn't wait for my reply as he tugged my hand again and led me outside. I felt a little bit lightheaded, but my body was fully aware of everything that was happening. We entered his car again and the heat burning felt worse. I felt the warmth of his gaze on me as I finally took his suit jacket off. I heard his sharp intake of breath and mine became heavy."You shouldn't have done that," he murmured.I looked at him to find his dark gaze on me. I exhaled shakily as his hand landed on the exposed skin of my left thigh. I closed my eyes and felt his touch there, tracing delicate circles over the pale, bare skin."What's your real name?" I asked as my head fell onto his shoulder. He seemed to have a different idea as he grabbed my waist, lifted me up and placed me in a straddling position. The heat seeping out from under the fabric of his pants made my skin buzz pleasantly. "I'll tell you mine when you tell me yours," he gritted out and kissed my temple gently. My breathing slowed slightly as he continued stroking over my leg. I couldn't help the moan slipping out involuntarily."Aria," I said. My eyelids drooped lazily against my will. His fingers were moving slowly along my thigh and I found myself growing wetter by the second. His fingers shifted my panties to the side as I worked on his belt.He smiled against my ear before whispering, "Maximo."He slipped inside me at that exact moment, and I moaned again. It didn't take long for me to come undone in his arms. I closed my eyes and breathed heavily.I woke up in his hotel room the next morning. I panicked as I tried to remember how I'd gotten to my room. That was when I remembered the events of the previous night. My mouth dropped open as I saw wads of crispy Euro notes on the bedside table, with a written note placed on top of it."You're in dangerous territory, Aria. Tread with caution."I got up from the bed and grabbed my phone from the nightstand. Several messages and voicemails from my step father. I played the most recent one, and a chill ran up my spine."I know you ran off to Italy, cunt! I'll find you, and I'll fucking kill you..."CHAPTER THREEMAXIMOMy Red. I haven't been able to stop thinking about her since last night. She seemed so innocent until our lips joined together. With her American accent and her optimism, she didn't know what she'd just gotten herself into by coming here.A nagging feeling I couldn't get out of my head was the fact that she looked strangely familiar. I knew I hadn't seen her before, because I never forget faces. And it's impossible to forget a face as perfect as her's. So why did I feel like I'd seen her before? Why did her face strike up an unpleasant pang at the back of my head? It was almost like my mind was trying to tell me something I needed to know, but my eyes and body weren't paying attention.Guttural screams filled the room as I was brought back to the dark reality. I watched Luca snip off the tip of Marco's fingers. His pathetic pleading filled my ears, and I watched how a former powerful gang lord begged for his life in my custody. That was what happened whenever peo
CHAPTER FOURARIAMy body was lying on something cold and hard. I shivered and tried to wrap my hand around my body. My eyebrows creased as I realized I couldn't move my hands. I pulled, but the sound of heavy metal filled my ears. My eyes opened slowly, and I took in the strange room I was in. I couldn't figure out what the room was. It was a dark room that was empty except for the chair that sat in the center of the room. With so much effort, I got into a sitting position. My head pounded as my stomach churned. I glanced at my hands and feet and saw that they were chained to the floor. My heart beat accelerated as confusion clouded my head. I shivered again as my teeth chattered. That was when my memory started to come back to me. The harsh grip, the handkerchief over my nose, the shoes...I heard a deep moan from beside me. I looked to find another man who was chained to the ground like me. My eyes shot to his hands. They were the same hands that covered my nose. Confusion swirled
CHAPTER FIVEARIAI couldn't stop the scream from leaving my mouth as the second man Maximo killed dropped to the floor. Everyone turned to look at me, but I could only look Maximo in the eye. His dark stare terrified me, and I no longer saw attraction or desire in it. Instead, I saw unadulterated rage and fury. In that moment, I wished I could understand what the other man told him to make him react this way. This wasn't the man that saved me from being raped or the man that had touched me and looked at me with so much desire. The man who stood before me was a monster."Who are you, and what do you want from me?" I asked with venom in my voice. He marched towards me, and I subconsciously cowered to protect myself. He got to where I was and crouched down to my level."You really got yourself into trouble, Red," he growled as his hand reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. His calloused fingers touched my cheek, and goosebumps rose on my skin. I shivered as I wondered how
CHAPTER SIXARIAI opened my eyes and immediately closed them again, wincing from the bright light that flooded into the room. I opened my eyes again and gazed outside. The sky was beautiful, and the sun’s golden light streamed through the window, casting long shadows on the floor.I would have smiled at the perfect view, but a heavy weight hung in my chest. I felt like Rapunzel—seeing the beautiful scenery through the window but never getting out.Except I wasn’t Rapunzel. I wasn’t a f*cking princess.I am a captive. A mere prisoner waiting for slaughter. The handcuffs that bound me to the bed were a harsh reminder. The door to my room opened and two young women stepped in, each carrying a tray. They both dropped the trays on a small stool at the foot of the bed, and I recognized the look of pity they cast me.I don’t need any fucking pity.“Your food,” the taller of the two announced.I scoffed bitterly. “Is Maximo such a pussy that he can’t even kill me himself? Instead, he’s reso
CHAPTER SEVENMAXIMOMy rough skin slid against her soft flesh as I undid the handcuffs on her wrist, and a strange feeling went through me as I saw the red bruise around her wrists.“I’m not fucking hungry,” she said snappily and a surge of annoyance welled up inside me.“You won’t speak when I don’t ask you to,” I said, gripping her chin roughly. She stared into my eyes and I could only see anger and pure hatred in her hazel orbs.I internally scoffed. It was nice to see that she still had some spark in her. Breaking her would be much more fun than I thought. She remained silent as I dropped the handcuff on the floor and dragged her up. I caught a whiff of her sweet fragrance. A mixture of strawberry and vanilla wafted into my nostrils and I instantly clenched my jaws tightly.“You know, you seem really weak for a Don,” she said. “You’re not as frightening as I expected a whole ass mafia don to be…”I made a low growling sound deep in my throat as I grabbed her neck.“What did I say
CHAPTER EIGHTMAXIMOThe dining room was still tense as Aria left. Lorenzo looked at me with a mixture of anger and disappointment and I found myself getting angry at the look on his face.“I don’t understand,” he started, dropping his fork on the table. The cutlery made a high pitched, tinkling sound that reverberated throughout the entire room.I rubbed my palms together and placed them folded under my jaw.“What don’t you understand, Lorenzo?” I asked, even though I knew exactly why he was acting the way he was.Aria’s father killed our youngest brother. And he wasn’t just some random rival. He was our father’s second in command when he committed the act. Although he had already been killed, it was basic knowledge that any offspring of a traitor should be killed as well.“You’re the don. You’re supposed to lead by example and do what’s right,” he gritted out in a low voice.I knew my other men were pretending not to listen, but I could tell that they were paying attention to every
CHAPTER NINEARIAMy heart pounded heavily in my chest as the cold barrel of Maximo’s gun pressed tightly against the side of my head. I pressed my eyes shut and tried to ignore the way my heart started to race.So this is it. This is how I finally die.At that realization, a cold sensation spread throughout my body, causing my breathing to become shallow and rapid. Fear clawed its way into my bloodstream and I couldn’t focus on anything else but the weight of the gun against my flesh.I heard the sound of the gun cocking and I realized how much I didn’t want to die. If I die now, there will be no chance of me escaping, or even trying to escape.I inwardly scoffed at the thought. Escaping from Maximo won’t be as easy as escaping from my stepfather. Maximo’s weight was pressed on my body, and there was no way I could ever overpower him.“All it takes is for me to move my finger, and you’re gone,” he said in a low growl. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as a wave of terror
CHAPTER TENMAXIMOI sat in my office and stared at the laptop that was before me. I had been staring at the screen for some minutes now. I needed to be working, but thoughts of a certain redhead handcuffed to the bed in one of my rooms filled my head.I should have just killed her last night. That would bring an end to whatever this was.‘Nothing is happening,’ I said in my head. She’s just a captive who also happens to be incredibly beautiful and sexy.My Red.The door to my office was opened and I had never been happy to get distracted from my thoughts before.“Scar,” one of my men greeted as he walked into my office and sat on the chair before me.“Enrico,” I said in a gruff voice. As he sat down, he dropped the file he was holding on the table and slid it across the table and towards me.“What does it say?” I asked.“The law enforcement are on us,” he revealed and I chuckled.Enrico was a police officer and also one of my most trusted men. He also helped us get intel on what was
CHAPTER ONE HUNDREDEPILOGUE (Eight Months Later)ARIA“Maximo,” Dr. Marini said, adjusting her glasses as she peered at him from across the table. “We’ve talked about this. You can’t solve everything with threats.”Maximo, sitting beside me in a perfectly tailored suit, crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. “I don’t threaten,” he said smoothly. “I give options. It’s not my fault people don’t like the consequences of the second one.”I stifled a laugh, earning a sharp look from Dr. Marini. She was one hell of a woman. Soft when she needed to be, but also scary nonetheless. It was why she was the only woman in the Cosa Nostra who could call my husband by his first name. I still wasn’t sure how I should feel about that.“Aria,” she turned her attention to me, “how do you feel when Maximo behaves this way?”“Honestly?” I said, tilting my head. “It depends. Sometimes, it can be infuriating..."“I didn’t even do anything,” Maximo grumbled beside me. “Do you know what other dons do
CHAPTER NINETY-NINEARIAThe sting in my hand was nothing compared to the ache in my chest. Maximo stood frozen for a moment, his cheek reddening from where my palm had connected. And then, to my utter disbelief, he laughed—a low, bitter sound that rumbled deep in his chest.“Wow. And here I was thinking you would be happy I’m offering you an easy way out,” he murmured. An angry snarl slipped past my lips as my hand shot up again, ready to slap him a second time. But before I could bring my hand down on his cheek again, he caught my wrist in midair. His grip was firm but not rough, and despite everything, a small, pathetic part of me was happy that he was touching me again.Piercing, grey eyes bored into mine with a mix of frustration and something else I couldn’t quite place.“Aria,” he said sharply, his voice edged with irritation, “I thought you’d be pleased.”“Pleased?” I yelled, my voice rising as tears burned in my eyes. I wrenched my hand free from his grasp, glaring at him th
CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHTARIAIt had been five days. Five days since Maximo killed Lorenzo. Five days since Maximo last spoke to me or looked at me.The house felt colder than usual, and the silence pressed down on me like a suffocating blanket. I’d spent the entire day trying to distract myself from the ache in my chest, but nothing worked.I had tried cleaning the kitchen even though everything was already spotless, scrubbing every surface until my hands were raw. Maria panicked when she saw me, and when she tried to shoo me away from the kitchen, I reminded her that I was her boss’s wife. I did it a little too harshly, I’ll admit, but I’ve been on an uncomfortable edge ever since.I prepared lunch with the rest of the kitchen staff. At first, there was an uncomfortable silence due to my presence in the room. But after I urged them to ignore my presence, a soft conversation amongst the maids followed, and I drowned myself in the city gossip I never knew could distract me.By mid-afterno
CHAPTER NINETY-SEVENMAXIMOA sharp scream pierced the room as Aria crouched to the floor. My heartbeat thudded in my ears as Lorenzo’s head snapped back, crimson blood staining the wall behind him as his body crumpled to the floor.Silence followed, but it was so loud that it felt like a roar.I stared at the lifeless heap on the ground, at the way his blood—my blood—pooled beneath him. My hand stayed clenched around my gun, trembling as I tried to make sense of what was in front of me. The pure rage that had driven me seconds ago evaporated. It was now replaced by a hollowness that spread through my chest like poison.I did it. I killed my brother. The realization ripped through my chest, leaving behind a void so vast that it threatened to swallow me whole. Lorenzo’s face was frozen in a blank state. I stared at his once-sharp features—features that were almost identical to mine—and the slack and lifeless face stared back at me. His eyes—eyes that used to glint with mischief, love,
CHAPTER NINETY-SIXMAXIMOI stood there, gun in hand, staring at my brother as his smirk spread and his mocking laughter echoed around the room. It wasn’t the laugh of someone remorseful or regretful. It was the sound of someone who had nothing left to lose.“You’ll have to be more specific,” I said through clenched teeth. “What exactly did you mean when you said you’ve been behind everything?”Lorenzo tilted his head, his smirk widening. “Do you really want me to go into detail? Are you sure your heart would be able to handle it?” He asked with a mocking pout.My anger burned hotter in my chest, and I tightened my grip on my gun. “Start talking.”“Fine,” he huffed, but then his eyes glinted with malice as he began to speak. “Do you remember when we were boys? How I did everything right? I trained harder, studied more, followed all the rules of the Cosa Nostra, and yet..." He waved a hand as his voice took on a bitter edge. “Yet you—the reckless, weak son—were chosen to lead.”“Yo
CHAPTER NINETY-FIVEMAXIMOI couldn’t wrap my mind around what Aria had just said. Her words echoed in my mind, loud and jarring like a bullet through the air. It didn’t make sense. It couldn’t be true.“I don’t believe you,” I finally said, and I saw the way her eyes fell.“I’m telling the truth, Maximo. What will I gain by lying about this?”I gritted my teeth and stepped away from her, needing to clear my head. The woman I loved just told me that my own blood brother, whom I’ve known my whole life, is planning to have us killed. What the fuck was I supposed to make of that? She took a step towards me, and I raised my head to look at her again. My eyes narrowed at her as I tried to understand if she was lying, if she had misheard something, if this was some kind of sick joke. “Have I ever done anything to break your trust?” She asked, and I could hear the hurt in her voice. The fear in her eyes and the slight wavering in her voice were too raw to be fake.“Are you sure?” My voice
CHAPTER NINETY-FOURARIAMy heart thumped heavily within my chest as I slowly turned to face him. The air between us crackled with tension as Lorenzo’s dark eyes fixed on mine. I forced myself to swallow the lump in my throat, pretending I didn’t hear or understand a single word of his phone call. “Oh, Lorenzo, I hope I didn’t interrupt your call,” I chuckled lightly. “I was just walking around the compound, admiring it for one last time before we finally leave. I didn’t expect to bump into you.”His expression was unreadable as he studied me for a moment too long, making my stomach churn with nerves. My palms were slick with sweat, and I clasped them tightly behind my back to keep from fidgeting.“You didn’t interrupt my call,” he said finally. His voice was smooth but sharp, like a blade wrapped in silk.I faked a frown, pulling my brows together. “But you look upset. Irritated even.”He chuckled, and the sound was more of a harsh one than an amused one. He took a step closer, and
CHAPTER NINETY-THREEARIAThe morning air was cool and quiet as I stepped outside. My shoes crunched lightly on the gravel path as I stepped away from the main house. For a moment, I just stood there, letting the breeze brush over my skin. It felt so peaceful out here, and I didn’t feel like I was suffocating.I didn’t know why—maybe it was the weight of finally leaving Milan all behind—but I felt something uneasy gnawing at my heart.Someone had just tried to kill Maximo yesterday. Whoever it was had succeeded in killing Luca. I’d tried to calm Maximo down yesterday. I’d offered him the comfort I could give, but deep down, I was troubled and scared. I barely slept a wink last night, even after Maximo and I retired into bed. I kept thinking about the blood I washed off his clothes and body. Luca’s blood. I kept thinking about how, even though we were so close to leaving, it still didn’t make me feel at ease. There was still someone out there who wanted Maximo dead. And heck, the perso
CHAPTER NINETY-TWOMAXIMOLuca’s funeral was set in the small graveyard of a chapel on the outskirts of the city--a place Luca had picked years ago in one of his rare candid moments. “My Papa was buried here. If I’m ever killed, I want to be buried here too,” he’d told me once. I never thought I’d be standing there, watching it happen. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and incense, the kind that always felt heavy in my lungs. A priest stood by the white coffin, and in a steady voice, he recited prayers that pierced the thick silence hanging over the men who surrounded the grave.Dark suits, stiff shoulders, and lowered gazes--it was the mafia’s version of grief. None of the men spoke, though I caught a few glances aimed my way. Pity. Respect. It all weighed heavy in their eyes. I ignored them all and returned my gaze to the coffin resting over the open grave.Luca’s mother stood closest to the dug ground before us. My heart clenched as I watched her small frame sway slightly under th
