CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

ARIA

Maximo’s jaws clenched as my words echoed around the room. A beat of silence passed between us. Ten seconds. Fifteen seconds.

My heart squeezed painfully at the turbulent emotions in my chest, then sank as I got the answer I needed.

“That’s what I thought,” I muttered bitterly before exiting the living room.

The sound of shattering glass followed me as I got to the bedroom door. Tears burned behind my eyes, and they came flowing down the moment I entered the room and shut the door behind me.

A sob wracked through me as I sank onto the floor. Clutching my stomach, I tried to calm myself down. But no matter how hard I concentrated, I couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down my face. It felt like someone had taken a knife to my chest, puncturing it repeatedly while ripping me apart. The pain was indescribable.
