"But I need to talk to my sister."

I always thought that when I saw my sister, I would be relieved - ready to hand Matteo back to her and return to my old life.

Continue my life as it was before.

The air in the room became thick, suffocating, as I stared at Isabella. The one who had disappeared a week before her wedding with my husband.

I had gotten her letter, almost gotten killed because I thought she had sent another, yet standing there, with her blond hair curled up in ringlets which framed her face, a mixture of shock and confusion overwhelmed me.

"You... you're here?" I whispered the question, my voice barely audible.

Was I imagining things?

Isabella nodded slowly, her eyes flicking between me and Matteo, uncertainty evident in her expression. The man she was supposed to marry, the man she was in love with, was holding me to himself.

She looked nervous, like someone who had just walked into a dangerous situation and was unsure how to navigate it.

"I don't have much time," Isabel

There was no way he would understand, not yet."I need answers." I could barely recognize the rasp in my voice as I walked out of the bedroom that morning, Matteo sprawled in bed, still asleep.I stormed through the hallways, barely noticing the new assembly of guards as I searched for Caterina, my housekeeper. She'd been with the mafia circle for long. She had to know something about this Dante family, something I could use against him so he could leave my sister alone. If it's monetary..."Caterina!!" "Stand in position."The air was cold, crisp with the early morning chill, and I could see my breath as it escaped in soft puffs. My hands trembled, not just from the temperature but from the nervous energy building inside me.Matteo stood across from me, his arms crossed over his broad chest, his bored face watching my every movement."Relax your shoulders," He instructed, his voice calm but firm, as though this was something he did every day. "If you're too tense, you won't be able to move fast enough."I nodded, trying to loosen up as I held the gun in front of me, the weight of it foreign in my hands. I'd never even thought about holding a weapon as my first choice of defence, let alone using one, until now.But after what Isabella had said about Dante, about him holding her hostage, the threat he would pose to me once I finally got her, I needed to learn how to fight - both with my hands and with a gun.Matteo had been surprisingly patient, completely aloof as he watched me. "I killed him."That revelation hit me like a punch to the guy, freezing me in place, especially after the note Isabella had left for me.I stared at Matteo, barely able to process his words. My heart was pounding so loudly that it drowned out the sounds of the forest around us."You.... killed him?" I repeated, my voice shaky, hoping I had misheard.Hoping it was a mistake. A joke.Matteo's eyes were on me, his expression hard, unreadable. The playful man who had been teaching me how to shoot moments ago was gone. And in his place stood a stranger, someone more colder, someone dangerous."Yes." He said simply, as if it was a matter of fact, like discussing the weather. The note from Isabella burned holes into my palm.Did Isabella know who the fuck she was staying with now?My mind raced with questions, but one stood out.Why hadn't anyone told me this before?"Why?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He took a deep breath, his gaze never leaving mine. "Because Dante Ricci was

I repeated the words in my mind, over and over, like a mantra I needed to believe in.What could I give Matteo in return that he couldn't get by himself? He got me, once Isabella was out of the picture. But Matteo wasn't a man who made promises out of the goodness of his heart. He was calculating, always weighing the benefits.I released my grip on his arm slowly, unsure of how much I should push. "What do you want from me, Matteo? Truly. If I agree to this, to help you find my sister for me, what will it cost me?"His eyes flickered with something unreadable before his mask slipped back into place. "You'll

Matteo"You have some explanations to do."I had never expected to be back at the Nevarro Estate for any reason for a very long time.Or until I received news that Pedro Nevarro was dead. The sun was barely visible when I left the safe house, casting long shadows across the gravel driveway as I pulled up in front of the massive mansion. The place I grew up in, the place where my father dug his claws into Valentina...Even remembering those moments and words was enough to make me see red."Isabella was still the better choice."I stepped out of the car, the weight of what was to come heavy on my shoulders. My father's presence, his whore of a wife's aggravating smile, along with the rest of the family, awaited me. Isabella was my betrothed - the one fa

Valentina."Russos don't cook. We have enough servants for that." Mom's voice filtered through my shields and stood at the forefront of my brain. The savoury smell of fresh garlic and onion greeted me as I stepped into the kitchen. The sound of sizzling pans filled the space, and I paused, watching the woman at the stove, stirring something with practised ease.I'd come down for some air, maybe a cup of water, but seeing her there made me pause.Ethan's wife. She glanced up, her soft green eyes meeting mine, and offered me a warm smile. "Look who finally came down. Valentina, right?"I nodded, stepping further into the kitchen. "That's me.""Would you like some wine?" Valerie asked, motioning to the open bottle of red on the counter. "I'm just making dinner, but it always helps me when I cook."I hesitated. “I didn’t mean to intrude…”"Oh, you're not intruding at all. Ethan's not home yet, and I love company while I cook." She gestured around the kitchen. "Except little baby Ryan. Ple

I whispered the question, scared of what I might hear.Matteo remained silent, his jaw clenched. Ethan, on the other hand, shifted uncomfortably, glancing between us as if regretting his words, but the damage had already begun.I could feel the ground beneath me crumbling, the walls of whatever fragile trust Matteo and I had built starting to collapse. He didn't even deem me fit enough to know the events that happened in his life."Why can't you talk to me?" It was always about Isabella."My legs felt weak.If Isabella wasn't staring at me, I was not sure I wouldn't have fallen to the floor or ran after him after he walked away.No.No, no, no.For months, I had tried to convince myself that Matteo only saw me as the replacement for Isabella. I tried to stop myself from falling for the one man I shouldn't have.I gasped, trying to suck in a breath, but the air felt like it was choking me. Valentina. The wind whipped through my hair as we sped down the empty road, the tires of Isabella’s car humming against the quiet pavement. It was quiet.Too quiet.I gripped the door handle tighter as the tension in my chest continued to build every past second. The conversation with mom still echoed in my mind, her cold eyes, the way she dismissed us like we didn't even matter.Isabella’s eyes flicked to the rearviee mirror, and I saw her jaw clench, the same way it had when we were leaving the Russo's mansion. The place we had called home for years."Do you think she was lying?" I asked, finding my voice after so many hours."Does it matter?" Isabella’s voice was cold, her fingers tight on the steering wheel. "She's never going to tell us the truth."I didn't have the energy to argue with her.Maybe she was tired. As we neared the highway, Isabella glanced over at me. “We’ll lay low at the safe house for a few days. I’ve already arranged everything.”"Can't I call Matteo now?"Her

Valentina."It's now or never."I had no idea where my mother was residing, but Isabella definitely thought she was still in our old mansion because she drove us there in a secret car from her secret apartment garage. There was so much I did not know about my sister.Isabella had remained quiet beside me during the drive, the occasional clench of her jaw or a glance toward me was the only sign that she was equally tensed. We weren't taking an easy task. Our mother, Gloria Russo, was no simple woman. She had always been the master manipulator, weaving stories and controlling our lives. Plus, I knew she was still mad because I never helped her with Giovanni and our father's case. But I hoped that beneath the icy exterior, there might be some plausible explanation for why she did what she did.Something to help me see my mother as something more than a monster.Isabella pulled the car to a stop in front of the Russo mansion, the massive iron gates opening slowly as we were waved inside.

Matteo.*I'm sorry. I had to save Isabella myself.*Those words were the only thing written in the note she left on the pillow for me.The walls of the safe house felt like they were closing in, suffocating me with their silence.I paced back and forth across the worn wooden floor, my fists clenched at my sides at frustration built up inside me.Valentina wasn't here. She hadn't been here for three days now.And every minute that passed without me knowing where she was felt like a slow descent into madness.Where the hell was she?"Where is she?" I growled for what felt like the hundredth time, directing the question at Ethan, who stood by the window, staring into the night. His expression was neutral, which only infuriated me more. How could he be so calm when Valentina was missing?"I don't know." He said quietly, his tone far too causal for my liking."Fuck." I ran a hand through my hair, tugging at the strands as if the pain would somehow clear the chaos in my mind. "I had no idea

Valentina."Run, Valentina. Run."The wind howled through the cracked window, sending a faint whistle into the dilapidated apartment as Isabella guided me inside.Dust clung to the air, illuminated by the dim moonlight streaming in through the shattered blinds. My steps echoed off the wooden floor, every creak a reminder of how far we'd come. The miles we'd ran with Isabella leading the way while I ran after her blindly."This... yours?" I whispered, fear of Luca creeping in clear every time I closed my eyes as I took in the remnants of a life long abandoned. The place smelled of mildew and neglect, yet beneath the decay, there was something almost... familiar.Isabella nodded, her face shadowed in the dim light. "Before everything that happened, yes." Her voice was brittle, like she was confessing a long buried secret. "I used to come here when everything was too much. To think. It was my.... escape."I turned, taking in the peeling wallpaper, the broken furniture, and the empty wall

Valentina."I belong here, Valentina."The cold air bit into my skin as two men dragged me through the dimly lit hallway, my arms bound behind my back. The echoes of their footsteps bounced off the concrete walls, a steady, ominous rhythm that sent chills down my spine.I tried not to think about what had just happened, about the words that had left Isabella’s lips, but they replayed in my head like a broken record."I belong here, Valentina. I belong with Luca."No. She didn’t mean it. She couldn’t have.My sister was brainwashed. That had to be it. Luca had done something to her, twisted her mind, poisoned her against me. There was no way she had chosen this life, chosen him.She had loved Matteo. I knew she had. We'd talked about it, whispered her fears and hopes late into the night when we were younger.
