He was half-amused by his daughter’s elaborate story. He knew she had wanted to see him. Ria was a mastermind at fabricating stories, and he knew for a fact that his youngest son, who was not yet a year old, was under the weather. He might not have spoken to his wife, but he was keeping himself posted on everything that was happening there, right down to the behavior of Sophia.

Beatrice and Beston were his eyes and ears, and they reported back to him four times a day.

It annoyed him that the woman he had asked to be a companion for his wife was behaving in such a manner. From what he had gathered, she was of no help to Proserpina.

He scowled.

He had wanted to make sure that Proserpina had another young woman to talk to when she was away. She was carrying their fourth child, and he wanted her to be happy.

Beatrice had told him about Sophie and her sulky manner.

Damn Schwartz, he thought angrily. The man and his soft heart! He had made a mistake in judging the woman.
