Nicholas's eyes fluttered open. He felt so much at ease. He hasn't slept well for some time. The faint light of the morning sun crept into the rooms through the curtains.

He was still a little sleepy but he suddenly became aware of the warmth pressed against him.

Alison.

His arm was wrapped around her, holding her close as though she belonged there.

For a brief second, he didn’t move. He just stared at her.

He tried recollecting anything that happened last night but he couldn't.

Her face was a few inches away from his. She looked so peaceful he didn't want to wake her up. As she slept, her lips were slightly parted, and each breath caused her chest to rise and fall. Her hair fell in strands across her face, and Nicholas thoughtlessly swept them away with his fingers. His touch was light—careful—as if afraid he might wake her.

And in that moment, he felt it again.

That ache. That familiar torment.

She looked like her.

But she wasn’t.

He knew it, yet his heart still twisted painfully in

Alison carried on like nothing happened. It was an accident. Nicholas was half asleep. He probably didn't remember anything. She had been stupid to let her guard down. Only one thing mattered —Survival. No matter how she tried to forget, she could still feel his warmth, his arms around it. She could still remember how his face looked so peaceful, so vulnerable. It was so unsettling to her. She shouldn't be thinking like that. She mustn't. When she entered the living room, Nicholas was already there sipping his coffee. He was back to his usual self—cold and distant. It was nothing like the pain in his eyes she saw last night. She was right, he probably didn't remember anything.“Training starts in ten,” he said, his voice sharp, sparing her a quick glance..Alison nodded quickly. “Got it.”Neither of them said anything. But the silence between them felt different. Not cruel. There was this tension in the air that Alison felt, she wasn't if he felt it too.The training was tense that d

Alison sat down peacefully on the couch as Nicholas tended to her injury. He cleansed her ankle's wound with delicate, cautious hands. There was something softer in his countenance, despite the fact that his brows were wrinkled in concentration. It was something something she hadn’t seen before. She tried not to feel anything. But she did.The warmth of his touch. The faint smell of his cologne. The way his eyes flickered to hers every now and then, as if checking to see if she was okay.“You need to be more careful,” he muttered, his voice low. “Things could have gone worse.”“I can handle it,” she replied, though her voice was losing its usual sharpness. “It’s only a scratch.”“ Just a scratch, huh” he mocked, pretty sure he saw her limping.Nicholas looked up; their eyes briefly met for a moment, but it was enough for Alison's heart to be at faster. Neither of them spoke but everything unsaid seemed to hang in the air between them. But then, as always, Nicholas was the first to bre

The times passed slowly and Alison busied herself sketching and painting. She took a moment to realize she was drawing him. Him. He has been in her mind these days. Like a force that refuses to leave. She wanted to rip it off.The painting was magnificent. His eyes. His gray eyes looked so enchanting. His sharp jaw. His eyes in the painting held a soothing softness. One she hasn't seen in his eyes. She hated it. She hated the fact she wanted to see this on his face when he looked at her. She hated the fact he was invading her thoughts. She hated the fact that she let her guard down even if it was only a little. This was dangerous and she knew it.By afternoon, Alison heard footsteps at the door. She was certain Nicholas had returned. She felt her heart skip a beat but it was not out of fear. She quickly hid her sketchbook, the last thing she wanted was for Nicholas to see the drawing and think she was obsessed with him or anything. She started to read an old book she found on a dusty

Although the night was silent, his thoughts were not. Nicholas stood by the window. He had a glass of whiskey in his hand, even though he barely took a sip out of it. Though his mind was centered on the darkness outside, his thoughts were else that was not here. They accompanied her. Alison. He sighed deeply, feeling that familiar weight in his chest—the one he had grown used to in the past days. This wasn’t meant to happen. She wasn't meant to be anything. Just a tool to be used. A reminder of Amelia, yes, but nothing more. But every day that passed, she became less of that reminder and more of… herself. He was frightened by that. She spoke to him as though he were a human who hadn't committed grievous sins, as though he was someone worth worrying about, and then she said, "I just don't want you to get hurt."Nicholas felt the burn through his throat as he gulped down the whiskey, calling his attention back to the present. He needed to wake up, remember who he was, what he had lost,

Nicholas's grip tightened around his phone as he reread the messages. “You don't know how close we are.”He stared into his phone as the word reverberated in his ears. The statement was straightforward, but it was as if a knife had been driven into his heart. As he inhaled, his jaw tightened as he felt repressed wrath wanting to surface. This person wasn't merely making fun of him. It served as a warning. It was more like a statement. They were aware of her she was here. Could it be Adrian? Adrian don't bother using a burner phone. He texts him directly.Nicholas was aware he had so many people. He had killed a lot of people and he wouldn't be surprised if their loved ones goes out seeking revenge. He doesn't have time to think whether it was Adrian or not. Whoever it was. They are probably on their way by now Nicholas's first impulse was to summon his men and order everyone in the vicinity to return right away. However, he stopped himself. No. Adrian could not afford to alert his sold

Nicholas didn't sleep at all. He couldn't allow himself to sleep. He guarded the window, his eyes glued outside in search of any movement or hidden shadows. The symbol craved in Alison's window was plainly on his mind. He knew they were watching, they were waiting and Nicholas was ready for them whenever they were ready to strike. The hours dragged on yet nothing happened. No movement or attack at all. Just pure silence. This was the hardest part. The certainty that something was meant to happen but nothing was happening at all.By morning, the house remained untouched. Nicholas understood assuming they were out of danger would be a big mistake. The moment he was about to sleep, his phone let out a buzz. It was the same number.Unknown Number: You didn’t sleep, did you? His fingers tightened around the phone. Whoever was behind this wanted to mess with him. They wanted to make him doubt his own security.Unknown Number: Nicholas, you're slipping. You can't keep her safe forever. He a

The light turned on in the warehouse as soon as Adrian entered, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the room with every steps he took. His men were ready, their weapons positioned to shoot if needed. The message he received was simple: We need to talk.Adrian wasn't the type to be summoned, he summons people, no one dare summons him maybe that was why he found the message intriguing. This was no ordinary informant. This person knew Nicholas and they knew him well.A figure stepped into the light emerging from the shadows. The man had a relaxed posture and was fully clothed in dark clothings. Adrian's eyes narrowed. He had anticipated a low-level mole, an unnamed traitor. Not the person he was seeing. The man before him was thought to be dead. Luke. It took a while before Adrian spoke, studying him for signs of deceit. Adrian folded his arms with ease and remarked, "So," he paused "You're the one feeding me information from.”Luke smirked. “Took you long enough to figure it out.”Adri

Alison could tell something was clearly wrong. She sensed a shift with how Nicholas was behaving but she couldn't place a finger on what it was.Nicholas definitely wasn't acting like himself, not that she knew well enough to actually know he's like. But she knew something happened to him. He's like he was waiting for someone to burst right through the door. He was colder than ever all of a sudden. Things were just going well between them. She wondered where the change came from.He was paranoid,he didn't let her go outside. She now had her training at the basement and she did them alone. He was more distant. She was sure something happened and it terrified her for some reason. She knew Nicholas wouldn't tell her anything. When has he ever told her anything? He was constantly working in his office and making a bunch of calls. She didn't know the kind of work but she imagined something dreadful. She noticed he was busier than before. She rarely sees him, mostly when she eats breakfast.

  • The Mafia Assassin    Chapter Fifty-One

The past couple of days, things have been going smoothly for Nicholas and Alison. They have grown closer staying in the underground. Nicholas still hasn't heard anything from Tristan. He knew something was wrong.Things were great with Alison; she has gotten bolder with him, teased him, and talked to Endless. He enjoys hearing her talk. She made me feel human again. Like he wasn't a monster. He was somehow reminded of the first time they met. How she challenged him despite her fear. He found it so funny."You know you can sleep on the bed; it's big enough for two," Alison's voice cut in through his thinking."You sure""Yes, you look so funny on that small couch" she let out a chuckle.Nicholas didn't know whether he would be able to control himself, being stuck with her in just this room was enough torture for him already. He wanted to decline but the look on her face left no room for arguments. He marched towards the bed where she was waiting. She patted the space beside her. She w

****Nicholas couldn't understand what was going on. He hasn't heard from Tristan for a while. He didn't know how things were in Adrian's end. He tried calling but he got no response. This was unlike him. He brushed it off noting it would be hard to communicate with him being in Adrian's territory. He watched as Alison slept. She looked so angelic in her sleep. He thought of last night when she confessed to him. He was honestly shocked by her confession and their late-night conversation. He could spend the whole day just hearing her speak. She had such a lovely voice. She was opening up to him now.He watched as she turned in her sleep. She was waking up. She slowly opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling for some time. Her cheeks turned red, he knew she remembered last night. He had always wanted to tell her how cute her morning face looked. He watched her as she sat up. Her eyes met his. She smiled at him and he found himself smiling too. He walked up to her. "Good morning beauti

All that Alison could think about was their almost-kiss. She was perfectly sure of it. All Nicholas did was confuse her. That seems to be his daily job which he was perfectly fine in. How could he do that leaving her craving for more. She was frustrated just thinking about it. Or could he possibly be still thinking of her as Amelia? She felt a little hurt thinking of her. She stared at him on the couch. His eyes were closed. He looked so peaceful in his sleep. He seemed a bit awkward on the couch. Even in his sleep, he was invading her mind. She sat up from the bed. Even the bed annoyed her too. A thought crossed her mind. She was about to do something crazy that might make things awkward for them."Nicholas""Nicholas"Nicholas opened his eyes, a few seconds later."Yes" He sat up and looked at her with those gray eyes she had come to talk."I can't sleep" She blurted out. That wasn't what she intended to say but she went with it."Me too" he sighed."Do you want tea?" he asked, and

Alison woke up earlier than before. The room was dark and completely filled with silence. She sat up on the bed stretching her body. Her body felt sore. She looked at the couch and she didn't see Nicholas. She expected to find him pacing the room or with his phone call. She straightened her shirt, her gaze falling on the closed bathroom door. The light spilling out from beneath it confirmed one thing. He was in there. She was about to lie down back when the door opened. She turned without thinking and froze.Nicholas came out of the bathroom, a white towel hung dangerously low around his waist. His hair was all wet and messy from the shower. Beads of water dropped from his perfectly built chest, and they glided down to the towel.Alison felt like she couldn’t breathe. She knew she should look away but she didn't. More like she wanted to look at him. Her brain was warning her not to look down; everything in her was forcing her to look up, but she found herself looking down at his body

The days went by in the underground room with Nicholas taking care of Alison till she eventually got better. Nicholas didn't leave her as promised. They had enough resources with them. It was almost as if he knew this was going to happen. Although Alison wasn't surprised. Being part of a Mafia, you have to prepare for emergency situations. The outside world was like a mystery to them as the time they spent inside the room passed slowly. As soon as she got better, Nicholas was busy. He's been making more phone calls. Although he was quiet during the calls. Her curious ears were ever ready to listen. She pretended not to, but she has heard more than he realized. Most names he mentioned sounded unfamiliar. The only familiar name he mentioned was Adrian and Tristan. Apparently it looked like they were still searching for them. She knew he wanted to protect her. That warmed her heart. Gradually she has been seeing so many good sides of him recently. Why couldn't those people leave them alo

Alison woke up again, she didn't know when she fell asleep again. She didn't see Nicholas which made her to feel panicked till she saw him lying on the couch. It looked a little odd considering his tall frame. She didn't know where they are. She monitored the unfamiliar room with intent trying to know whether she could guess the place. She stared at Nicholas again, she got off the bed and moved closer to him. A half blanket covered him.His gun was kept to his side. He looked so....tired yet still handsome. This was the first time she has ever seen him sleep. He looked so gorgeous. Alison watched me closely. He looked different. He seemed more... human unlike before. She walked back to her bed sitting on it. She glanced at the half glass of water placed on the table remembering how he took care of her.She wondered why he chose to be in the same room with her. He could have gone to another room. But he didn't. He was still here.A voice in her mind was reminding her she looked like his

Nicholas stared at the almost lifeless body in his arms. His heart nearly stopped beating when she fell into his arms. The image triggered a memory, but a different time, different person, similar situation, and striking resemblance. Alison wasn't going to; he wouldn't let that happen. He ignored the chaos and fighting from the men and picked her up. She needed to be taken to the hospital. He knew it was risky considering they were in the run but that was the only option. "I'll get Luca," Tristan said, aid probably sensing how lost Nicholas was. Luca was a doctor who also helped if any of the gang members got injured. Soon Alison was out of his arms and was being attended to. He didn't want to leave her with Luca but something was really bothering him. He left her with Tristan before going to meet the men who abducted her. He marched towards them with a burning fury in his chest threatening to burst. The men were already tied up and injured. He brought out a sharp knife from his pock

A scream broke the quiet night. Nicholas jolted awake, alert suddenly. His thought was of one person. Alison. He reached for his gun as he heard another scream, louder than the first. He rushed out of his office and dashed towards Alison's room. He could still remember their argument. Damn, he shouldn't have left her alone. He kicked the door open with so much force. No one, he didn't see anyone in the room, and for the first time,, he felt a feeling he didn't think he would feel for a long time.Fear.His eyes drifted to the broken window and the remnant glasses on the floor. She was gone. Alison was gone. He caught sight of blood on the floor. She was injured. Those assholes hurt her, he was going to make them pay. The hands that dared her hurt her, be it whoever Adrian or whatever. His mind was racing as he stared at the blood. He could feel himself getting furious. Now wasn't the time to lose control, he had to find her and whoever took her.He called one of the men who was suppos

Nicholas could barely sleep that night. The image of Alison pressed against the wall with pure anger in her eyes kept interrupting his sleep. Damn it. He shouldn't be thinking about her, he had more pressing matters to deal with.He shouldn't have gotten that close to her. Or touched her in the first place. The look in her eyes stirred something in him. Something he didn't want to feel more like wouldn't accept himself to feel. He nearly lost control and it terrified him.His control was the only thing keeping them alive at the moment. He couldn't afford to lose it.He didn't know what Adrian was planning and he suspected he had something to do with the symbol. He wasn't sure but that was all he could come up with for now. He didn't need Alison digging around. It would just get her killed or force him to do things he wasn't ready for.He couldn't afford for that to happen.Yet... he found himself thinking about her even though he tried to hide it.He loved how she challenged him and
