Chapter 6: A Breeder for the Alpha

A breeder… What did he mean?

The word hung in the air like cold fog on a wet morning. Vaguely present and murky to navigate. So, that's what Jessica had been referring to. I hadn’t misheard her, after all. Once I was healed, I'd be suitable for taking on the physical rigors of pregnancy.

My father played his best hand and won the bet.

Dad had no qualms about selling me off like an animal. I was at an all-time low, still an extension of the Moon Pack's control. I had been traded from one scenario where I was objectified and replaced with another. It made me feel sick as I pondered my circumstances. I had no choice but to do this with Alpha Arthur.

There was no way out. He was in charge.

I closed my eyes momentarily, shaking my head once, hoping to make the sinking feeling disappear. When I opened them, he was still examining me. I wondered if what I said or felt meant anything to him but in my heart, I knew the answer. He cared only about his goal.

I was not a person to him.

“Any questions?” Arthur asked with a flaccid tone.

“Alpha Arthur, I understand there is a debt to be paid, but I can’t sell my body to you. Can I not become your slave instead and serve you until the debt is cleared?”

Arthur sneered and asked, “I’ve sunk a billion dollars into the Moon Pack. Think you can pay that back?”

Anthony added, “I can confirm what Arthur is saying. After a huge fire that almost made Moon Pack destitute, ShadowClaw was there to supply the funds, allowing them to get back on their feet. This arrangement makes sense.”

I couldn’t recall a fire but that didn’t mean it didn’t happen. There was a chance it had been bashed out of my memory by one too many blows to the head.

There was no doubt about it. My contract to Arthur could never be repaid in a traditional sense. This was an endless maze or a vast ocean where I was treading water indefinitely. I was nothing more than an insurance settlement after the Moon Pack failed.

Arthur whipped out a pack of cigarettes, biting the filter, pressing his attractive lips to it. Anthony was quick to flick the Zippo, lighting up Arthur’s stern features and filling me with fear once more. My heart began to race again, my adrenaline picking up. I tried to swallow but my mouth was too dry.

Just what was I to him?

Arthur, with his keen wolf perception, sensed my question and elaborated. “It’s easy for me to find women. I don’t need to coerce them or engage in tedious courting rituals. There is no need to waste effort to seduce them or play the hero. Plenty try to attain me through various means but only I can choose the one I want.” He continued, “The reason I chose you is because you have a clean background.”

I struggled to wrap my head around what this could mean. It made sense that he’d want an unknown wife, being that he was such a private person, but I knew I wasn’t getting the full story.

“You may be confused but let one thing be clear. I will never love a woman like you.”

Frustrated confusion overtook me. The information I had grown up with was clashing with what Arthur was saying now. Fated mates, pure bloodlines, all of this was tossed aside with ShadowClaw.

I knew that I didn’t have the most charming demeanor in the world and that Arthur didn’t have to use typical methods to woo women. Still, being married to someone purely for breeding purposes felt transactional. It disheartened me.

The heir and next Alpha in the ShadowClaw Pack should have the most powerful bloodlines—ideally Alpha blood from both of his parents to create a pure bloodline. But a breeder like me is just a means to an end. He will use me once and then he'll toss me away.

“I’ll give you nine months to leave after giving birth,” he added.

My chest surged with anxiety, squeezing. My life was being dictated by others yet again, never me, but at this point, it had happened so often that I was beginning to feel numb to it. I’d been stripped down to nothing.

Though the pain of what my father had done was crushing my soul, I had to accept it. I was heartbroken but he could do nothing else to me now.

Rather than wallow or cry, I decided to look at this logically. Perhaps this was an opportunity being presented to me. I just had to view things differently.

“All right, Alpha Arthur. I’ll abide by your conditions. Now, if I can give birth to a child smoothly, can I make a condition?”

"Please confirm."

"May I proceed with my studies?"

He tilted his head in thought, keeping his eyes on me. Was he expecting me to cry or something? He had the wrong girl.

"No, you must ensure absolute secrecy regarding your activities here," he emphasized. "If you manage to accomplish this task discreetly, there will be a bonus involved." He indicated with a hand gesture, implying a monetary reward.

“Half a million?” I guessed.

“I’ll add a zero to that,” he said, as though he were speaking about the most mundane of topics.

“I’ll complete the task,” I replied, feeling even more solid in my answer. “And rest assured, I won’t develop any feelings for you over these nine months,” I began. “However, if you, Alpha Arthur, fall for me first, don’t think for a second you can whisk me away like a fairy tale character. Try as you may, you will never be able to buy my love. I’m not as easily swayed by cash as my simple, greedy father.”

The room was silent and icy. I remained firm in my conviction, my face unchanged though my emotions surged like unrelenting waves eroding the shore of my soul. In the span of a week, I had endured catastrophic abuse. Not only physical but the ultimate betrayal of my father selling my body off to this arrogant Alpha. My pride, principles, and values were like a bunch of puzzle pieces thrown in the air. I was waiting for them to fall so I could snap them back in place but for now, I had to figure out a new way to live.

I must learn how to survive under these novel circumstances, and then deal with the next challenges one step at a time. I knew I could do it because I’d survived before. There was no other option for me. I was without a pack or a home.

Jessica optimistically commented, “I’ll take good care of her, Alpha Arthur. You can count on me to help regain her health quickly.” She pulled out a folder. Enclosed was a stack of instructions that slammed against the desk when she dropped it. I craned my neck to see what she was referring to.

“Here is a full listing of the guidelines you’ll need to be in tip-top shape to carry the Alpha’s child.” I stared at the folder filled with printed pages. It was several centimeters thick. “Okay, now let’s look at page one, Ophelia.”

I internally sighed.

Jessica was going to go page by page to teach me what to do. I guess I’d have to grin and bear it. She was the only friend I had.

Alpha Arthur glanced at me with slightly narrowed eyes and said, “I hope you perform better than your appearance.”

With that, he left the room.

***

In the evening I was joined once again by Jessica who brought me another buffet of exotic, indulgent foods which I savored with every bite.

“Here,” she began as she handed me some expensive clothing—a mixture of dresses, pants suits, flashy shoes, and rare jewelry. “Try these on. You’ll need to be wearing something presentable and flattering when we go to meet the true leaders of the ShadowClaw pack.”

“True leaders?” I questioned, pulling a fiery-tinted dress up to my shoulders.

“Yes,” Jessica said as she adjusted the full-length mirror so I could see myself better.

I zipped up the tight dress, outlining my every curve. I cringed in pain as the material stuck to my back. Jessica immediately unzipped me.

“Your back is still tender,” she gently reminded me. “You’ll need to heal more before we go.”

“There are more people in ShadowClaw?” I asked.

“There are four big shots in the pack. Three of them are villainous and shady, Arthur being the most notorious. Then there is one who is more ethical.”

Jessica looked at me, seriously. Her pupils were set, her face serious.

“Are you sure you want to get caught up in this? This is a huge risk meeting them. It's even riskier getting this close to Arthur, especially only for money.”

Jessica held my chin, putting on plain lip gloss, smokey eyeshadow, and onyx mascara. When she stepped away I glanced at myself in the mirror, the overhead lights causing every curve to be magnified.

"At least now I have no choice."

As I removed the clothing I’d tried on, placing everything back in the closet, I realized my life had just turned down a dark alley with nothing to light my way. Things were no longer simply black and white, good or bad. I had to navigate using instinct and learn along the way.

What would I do with the cards dealt to me? Would I fold or would I risk the bluff? It was time to think about the answer to that.

What was I made of?

At the very least, I didn’t have to endure beatings and starvation. In that sense, things were most certainly looking up.

Beta Anthony’s POV: I watched Arthur speak with finality to Ophelia in the hospital room. When he left, I followed him out the door. "Alpha Arthur," I said quietly once we were in a more private area. Arthur turned to me and tilted his head. "I think it's obvious by now that Ophelia's father wasn't honest with us.""I know," Arthur remarked. "She isn't in the condition he promised." "She's experienced severe abuse at home, probably all her life. I saw how savage and primitive they were. They seemed more like a bunch of rogue wolves making a sad attempt at being a pack. They're mavericks, not a family.""What is it that you're getting at?" Arthur asked, sounding perturbed. I knew his patience may run out quickly if I didn't say my piece. He didn't like wasting time. "Well, picture her coming from a life like that and now being told she has to be a breeder. It seems like a lot for a young wolf woman to take in." I pursed my lips but didn't push him. Arthur'

His mouth dropped open for a moment. "Dad," I began, my heart pounding. I so often associated him with pain, but right now his voice evoked comforting familiarity. "I don't know where to begin," he commented, fidgeting from nervousness. Was my presence making him feel uncomfortable? "Um, you sold me off to be a breeder, for one." I pointed an index finger at him with my eyebrows raised. "Ophelia, you don't understand. It was the only way to get the money from ShadowClaw Pack." "But why didn't you tell me about it?" I threw my hands out in disbelief. "It was a huge shock to have it dumped on me when I arrived." "Look, Arthur threatened the Moon Pack. He said that if we didn't go through with the breeding contract, he'd kill our family." My chest clenched with anxiety as I touched my li

I asked Jessica in her office."Yup!" she said, beaming with excitement. "All of your hard work is paying off.""I feel stronger already," I said, showing Jessica my little muscles."Great!" she exclaimed. "Even though you're not one hundred percent, I think you're fit enough to carry Arthur's pup."I swallowed hard. It was getting closer now that I was feeling better. I didn't want Jessica to see my apprehension, so I thanked her and left. After I was in my room, I figured I had earned some relaxation. The bookshelf was full and I hadn't had much time to read from it. I slid my fingers along the bindings, finding an interesting title, and slipped it out of the bookcase. Before I knew it, I was engrossed in the story. I was just

My heart was pounding from fear and the feeling of being trapped. I could feel the weight of his body over mine and as much as I wanted to continue, it was difficult. This was a job, I told myself; however, perhaps this would be the only time we would have to be together. I’d get pregnant right away and this would be the only time we’d have to do this. His fingers trailed along the outside of my thigh and then to my inner thigh. He seemed intent on making this a pleasurable experience for me. Or was this what he was used to with other women? I couldn’t deny that what he was doing to me was changing the experience for me. Maybe even making it more positive, but just as I had said no to him before I couldn’t help but feel the past come back to haunt me. I allowed him to continue. My breathing picked up rapidly. I was trying to shut out what had happened to me. I could feel him between my legs, moving closer to me. It was about to happen at any second. I was doing my best but

Ophelia POV Since the last time I saw Arthur, we haven't seen each other again. Two weeks have passed in the blink of an eye. Anthony and Jessica have taken extra care of me during these two weeks, and my health has improved a lot. It's another sunny day, dispelling the gloom in my heart.I needed some fresh air so I decided to take a walk—a regular part of my health regime. I found myself intrigued by the serenity of a nearby river. As I came closer, however, I noticed the rushing water was faster than it had first appeared. "What a nice day," I said to myself, sighing, relaxing my wrists over the bridge, linking my fingers. Just as the words left my lips, I heard a desperate voice shout, "Help!" I squinted my eyes only to see a small figure struggling against the rapid current. Her head was barely breaking the surface long enough for her to gulp some air before she was swept under again, her arms flailing. "Please!" I heard a gurgling voice

Good, good. Now to the left, a bit, okay, perfect!"Continually laughing, I followed her instructions to a T and then we stopped. I wasn't sure which room we were in. It smelled differently than any I'd been before."Okay, ready?" she asked."That depends," I joked. "Is this a good surprise?""Don't worry. You'll love it!"Quickly she pulled her hands away from my eyes. I blinked a few times trying to get used to the bright lights in the room. My heart skipped in excitement. I couldn't believe it!There in front of me was a cello propped up on its endpin. I held my breath in excitement, pressing my palm to my chest. The next day I went through my usual routine, my mind elsewhere. I walked around the courtyard and visited Jessica for a little while.I wasn't thinking about Arthur and figured that since our appointment had been canceled the night before, it would be a while before he wanted to meet with me again. After dinner, I was hanging out in my room when I heard a knock. That was peculiar."Yes?" I called. Who could it be?"I'm here to help you get ready," one of the maids said. I walked to the door and opened it."H-hi," I stuttered."Hello," the maid said, waving politely. She stepped into my room just like she had the first night. She began to arrange the room, picking up items and setting up candles.Arthur was coming tonight!"Will you always arrive before Arthur and I are going to be... together?" I asked the maid. She smiled and nodded."If I don't show up, it means he won't either.""Good to know," I whispered, mostly to myself.I'd have to keep that in

I awoke with a start. I didn’t remember falling asleep. Glancing at the empty spot beside me, I realized I never heard Arthur leave. He must have been very quiet. I was still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes when there was a knock at the bedroom door. After covering up with a robe, I walked to the door and answered it. It was one of the maids from the night before. "Hello, I'm here to help bathe you," she said."Oh, no thank you," I said to her, smiling. "But I appreciate it." After politely declining her offer, I closed the door and then walked to the bathroom. Pulling my toothbrush out of the cup holder, I began brushing my teeth. As I stared in the mirror, I was suddenly reminded of a boy I had a crush on when I was in middle school. His name escaped me. I could barely recall what he looked like. But none of that mattered. Ophelia's POV The next morning I woke up early and decided to start my day with a cappuccino from my favorite coffee house ‘Rosalyn's’ before rehearsal. As I opened my door I smiled, turning my face to the warmth of the sun. It was a beautiful morning, and I had plenty of time to walk down to my destination before I had to get to work. One of my favorite things about my new home was the variety of charming shops located within walking distance of my house. I passed my favorite bakery ‘Daily Bread’ and deeply inhaled the fragrant aroma of freshly baked bread wafting into the street. I thought about stopping in for one of their luscious croissants but decided against it. Even though my mouth watered at the idea of the flakey, buttery consistency of their pastries, it wasn't practical. I had some time, but not enough to make two trips. And the coffee was non-negotiable if I was going to get through my morning. I always enjoyed practicing my cello, but rehearsal could be in

Ophelia's POV I had always loved jazz music. It was a passion that I didn't share with most people. It seemed to me that jazz was a polarizing art form. People seemed to either love it or loathe it. And I always seemed to have far too much going on in my life to waste time arguing about its merits with those who fell into the latter category. Nonetheless, from the time I was a child, I would pull on my earphones and be swept away by the sounds of my favorite musicians. Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and Ella Fitzgerald to name a few. They felt like friends to me. No matter what was happening in my life, I knew that I could always turn to their music in my time of need. Listening to the sweet sound of Coltrane's ‘Cousin Mary’ would always bring me some measure of peace. It was one of the few things I could count on during that dark period of my life. I don't know exactly how it came up in conversation with Allen, but yesterday I confessed to him about this guilty pleasure of

Ophelia's POV The next day, my head pounding with a dreaded hangover, I decided that there was only one surefire way to get Arthur out of my head once and for all. I was going to get rid of absolutely everything related to him. If I needed him out of my life, and out of my head for good, then I needed to purge it all. Everything must go, I thought irrationally, as I grimaced from the burn of the black coffee I had ingested. All of it. It would be like an exorcism. Only the demon I was desperately attempting to vanquish was my love for Arthur. It might be a tall order, but I had to start somewhere, I thought grimly, using the dregs of the bitter brew to swallow two aspirin. I'd begin with the obvious: the villa key he'd given me, our family photo from that baby store, and newspaper clippings I'd hung up beside my bed for the past year. I was sure there was more, but that was where I would begin. The only problem with my plan was that sorting through these items brought b

Ophelia's POV In the days following Christmas dinner, Allen was busier than usual. He spent most of his days at the hospital with his patients, sometimes even sleeping at work rather than driving home exhausted after a fifteen-hour shift. "I'm sorry," Allen told me over the phone during one of his infrequent breaks. "The hospital is just insanely busy right now. It seems as if every shifter in the surrounding territories is either sick or injured right now. I have no idea why!" "Maybe it's the full moon," I joked, trying to make light of the situation.I missed Allen, and the more I was alone with my musings, the more my mind and heart turned to Arthur, and what he might be doing. Did he remember me? Or had he forgotten me as quickly as it seemed? "It's not your fault in any case," I continued, trying to hide the disappointment I felt at the thought of spending another day alone. "Your patients are incredibly lucky to have you." "I'll make it up to you, I promise

Ophelia's POV I awoke early to the aroma of fresh coffee wafting tantalizingly from downstairs. Smiling, I threw on my new black robe and followed the scent to our kitchen table. And to Allen, my friend. I reflected once again, upon seeing him seated at the table with my son, how lucky I was these days. "Good morning, sweetheart," Allen said warmly, offering me a warm smile. "I was just going to bring you some coffee. Are you hungry for some breakfast?" My stomach immediately growled loudly in anticipation, making us both chuckle. I sat down next to my pup, ruffling his hair. Aiden was a year old, and I thanked the Moon Goddess every single day for bringing him into my life. For bringing both men into my life. "I guess that answers that question," Allen replied with a grin, making his way over to the stove. "Belgian waffles and home fries coming right up!" Allen was tall and handsome, with curly dark hair and melting chocolate eyes. Everything about him was warm and

Arthur's POV I found myself strolling through a winter garden. The sun rose high overhead, spreading warmth throughout my body despite the gentle snow falling to the ground. Everything in my surroundings sparkled as if silver glitter had somehow been mixed with the wintry precipitation.I ambled slowly past an ice sculpture, which miraculously bore Catherine's likeness down to the smallest detail. Even the tiny laugh lines around the corners of her mouth stood out in relief. For some reason, I felt as if the statue was purposefully mocking me. Telling me to give up, that my love would always be lost to me. This angered me, and with a muttered curse I drew my broadsword from its sheath. Raising it above my head, it glinted under the rays of the sun as if on fire. Grinning, I brought down my sword and decapitated the effigy in one swift stroke. It had been satisfying to kill her, if only symbolically. But before I could reflect upon why that might be, I heard something that to

Then an icy blizzard hit with the rapidity of a squall. I was blinded by the whitewash, and I lost track of her. Rushing around frantically, I searched for her in the last direction that I'd seen her go.It felt like I walked for ages but finally, I knew she was near because suddenly the storm swirled away into the distance, then ceased. The snow was melting and as I trudged toward her, shivering and frostbitten, she stood in a beautiful, lush garden. Moss and chartreuse grass grew before my eyes. She turned to me, and I was bewildered when koby-pink cherry flower blossoms began to fall at my feet, covering the ground.
