Alaric

Her scent lingers on my hand where our fingers intertwined in the library last night. Honeysuckle and rain, with that underlying hint of something ancient that calls to my beast in ways I can't explain. I should be focusing on territory reports, but all I can think about is how she leaned into me slightly, trusting despite everything.

"Is that my brother with a dopey smile on his face?." Iris lounges in my office doorway, grinning. "You’re thinking about her, aren’t you."

"I don't smile dopey," I growl, but there's no heat in it.

"You kind of do," Garrett adds, appearing behind her. "It's disturbing, actually."

"Don't you two have duties? Besides tormenting your Alpha?"

"And miss this entertainment?" Iris's eyes dance. "Never."

Garrett tries to pull her away, but she dances out of his reach. "Come on, menace. Let's leave his brooding in peace."

"Fine." She sighs dramatically. "But only because you asked so nicely."

Their playful bickering fades down the hall, leaving me with th

Sage The healing wing feels different lately. Warmer somehow. Other healers have started asking my advice about herbs, and even some of the noble wolves bring their pups to me for minor scrapes. It's a small change, but it feels like finally finding solid ground after months of shifting sand."The silver-leaf poultice you suggested worked wonders," the head healer tells me, actually smiling. "Perhaps you could show me—"She stops mid-sentence, tension suddenly filling the air. In the hallway, wolves gather, whispers spreading like wildfire:"She's back—" "Her father insisted—" "The Alpha had no choice—"Then I catch a familiar floral scent, too sweet, too perfect, and my stomach drops.Eris glides through the healing wing like she never left, elegant even in supposed exile. Her father, Lord Alexander, follows with an entourage of nobles."My King," he addresses Alaric, who's appeared in the doorway. "I come seeking sanctuary for my daughter while I travel to handle urgent territorial

Sage "Shoulders back, chin up – but not too much, you don't want to seem arrogant." Iris circles me like a general inspecting troops. "Yes, like that. Now the greeting."I attempt a formal bow, trying to remember all the rules she's drilled into me since dawn. "My Lord Alpha—""Too deep for an Alpha who isn't Alaric," she corrects. "That level of bow suggests submission to direct authority. For visiting Alphas, you want to show respect without—""Without surrendering power," I finish, adjusting my posture. "Let me try again."We've been at this for hours in her private quarters, the sun barely peeking over the horizon. My head spins with protocols and hierarchies, but something in me refuses to give up.A knock interrupts my fifth attempt at the proper greeting. Garrett enters with a loaded breakfast tray, his stern Beta face softening when he sees Iris."Thought you two might need sustenance for..." he waves vaguely at our impromptu training session, "whatever this is.""My hero." Sage "Perfect!" Iris claps as I complete the formal greeting sequence without stumbling. "You've really got this now."I straighten, surprised to find I'm no longer sore from maintaining proper posture. When did that become natural? Like my body's finally accepting its place in these halls."Should we go over the Northern territory bloodlines again?" I ask, moving to the familiar window seat in Iris's quarters. "I want to make sure I have all the connections straight before—"I stop, realizing I've picked up her favorite tea blend without thinking. When did I learn how she takes her tea? When did this room become somewhere I feel comfortable enough to move around freely?"Before what?" Iris prompts, but her knowing smile suggests she sees the thoughts crossing my face."Nothing." I busy myself with the tea. "Just want to be prepared.""Mmhmm." She accepts her cup – two sugars, no cream, exactly how she likes it. "You know, for someone who's 'just visiting', you've really gotten to kno

Alaric She moves through the healing wing with quiet confidence now, her silver-blonde hair caught up in a simple braid as she instructs younger healers. My beast purrs at the sight of our mate so naturally embedded in pack life, teaching others with gentle authority that grows stronger each day."The moonflower essence needs to be harvested at exactly the right phase," she explains, her voice carrying clearly to where I watch from the doorway. "Too early and it loses potency, too late and—""My King." Eris appears at my elbow, her voice pitched to carry. "Lord Marcus requests your presence in council. Something about... pack security."The way her eyes flick to Sage makes my beast snarl, but she's already gliding away, the picture of reformed nobility. The council chamber buzzes with tension when I enter. Lord Marcus stands as I take my seat, his aged face grave."My King, concerns have been raised about... uncertain elements within the pack."I keep my face neutral, though my beast

Sage Something's wrong. I feel it the moment I enter the healing wing - the way conversations stop, how wolves avoid my eyes. A mother pulls her pup away when I offer to check his cough."We'll wait for a proper healer," she says, not quite meeting my gaze.Proper healer. The words sting more than they should."Did you need anything?" I ask another wolf who usually seeks my help with chronic pain. She hurries past without responding. The whispers follow me like shadows: "—unknown methods—" "—strange herbs—" "—can't trust—"Understanding dawns slowly, painfully. Someone's been busy poisoning the pack against me."Troubling, isn't it?" Victoria's voice makes me stiffen. She stands with three other noble wolves, blocking my path to the herb storage. "How quickly trust can turn.""I don't know what you mean.""No?" She examines a bottle of my prepared medicine. "Interesting mixtures you make. Unknown herbs, strange combinations... who knows what might be in them?""Those medicines have he

Alaric Her distress hits me like a physical blow, the mate bond pulsing with pain that isn't mine. I find myself outside her door before conscious thought, her scent tinged with salt and sorrow. When she opens at my knock, the sight stops my breath. Her face is carefully composed, but her eyes are red-rimmed, and she's methodically folding clothes into a small bag."Don't." The word comes out rougher than intended."My King—""Don't," I growl again. "Don't use my title. Not now."She turns away, but not before I catch the shine of fresh tears. "I won't leave without saying goodbye properly. I owe you that much.""You don't owe me anything." I move closer, my beast straining toward her pain. "But I deserve to know why.""You know why." Her laugh holds no humor. "The pack will never accept me. And you... you can't keep defending me without undermining your own authority.""So you'd just leave?" Something dangerous edges into my voice. "Run away in the night like a guilty thing?""Not in

Sage My fingers keep straying to my lips, still tingling from his kiss. From my first real kiss. Everything about it was different, better than the fantasies I’d conjured in my mind - the raw emotion in Alaric's eyes, the gentleness of his hands on my face, the way he held me like I was something precious. The memory of it makes me shiver - the way he gently but firmly demanded I let him in, the silk of his tongue sliding against mine as he dominated our kiss, showing me what to do. For a moment my lack of experience had gotten in my head, but then Alaric groaned, his sound of pleasure putting my mind at ease. He tasted of pine and winter wind and something wild that called to parts of me I didn't know existed. How his hands trembled slightly when they cupped my face, like he was touching something infinitely precious. The low sound he made when I gasped against his mouth, like something finally breaking free.It was so unlike the measured, controlled way he always carries himself.

Alaric Dawn light catches in her silver-blonde hair as she kneels in her ruined garden, methodically replanting what others destroyed. She doesn't flinch when I approach, doesn't startle at my presence anymore. The thought makes my beast purr with satisfaction."The moonflowers will bloom again by the next full moon," she says without looking up. "They're more resilient than people think."Like you, I don't say. Instead, I kneel beside her in the dirt, not caring about my formal clothes. "Show me how to help?"Her surprise makes something in my chest ache. "You don't have to—""I want to." I take the small trowel she offers. "Which ones first?"We work in comfortable silence, her hands sure and gentle as she guides mine in proper planting technique. My beast settles into rare peace, watching our mate create something beautiful from destruction."You're good at this," she says softly. "Building things back up."The words spark something I've been considering since our kiss. Since watch

Sage "Again," Iris instructs as I shift back to human form. "You're getting faster, but you need to be able to change instantly if threatened."My bones and muscles protest, but I welcome the physical discomfort. It's easier than the constant ache of the mate bond, the awareness of Alaric that I can't shut off no matter how hard I try.“He suffers too,” Aura reminds me. “I can feel it through the bond.”“Then he should have thought of that before lying to me,” I snap back, shifting again into my white wolf form. The sun rises fully as we practice, other wolves gathering to watch. My transformation has changed how they see me - some with awe, others with lingering suspicion. But at least they're open about it now, unlike some people."The Alpha's in another emergency meeting," I overhear one guard tell another. "More attacks reported from the eastern territories."Of course he is. There's always another meeting, another crisis, another reason to be anywhere but here.“He's doing his d

Alaric Memories torment me as I try to rest - every time she asked what she meant to me, every opportunity I had to tell her the truth. The night in the training room when she gave herself to me so trustingly. The mornings after when she looked at me like I hung the moon. All while I kept this secret from her.“She is OURS,” my beast rages. “Has always been ours. Why did we hide it?”"Because I'm a fool," I tell the empty room."Yes, you are." Garrett appears with reports about the attack. "But a fool who can still fix this.""How?" The word comes out more desperate than I intend. "You didn't see her face, Garrett. Didn't feel her pain through the bond.""No, but I saw her face every time you pulled away in public. Every time you maintained 'proper distance' while knowing exactly what she was to you."His words cut deep because they're true. I thought I was being noble, giving her freedom to choose. Instead, I made her feel unwanted. Unworthy.Just like Cassius did.Pain from my wou

Sage Power courses through me like liquid moonlight as I stand over Alaric's fallen form. Everything feels different - sharper, clearer, more alive. I am different. Where once there was emptiness, now my wolf fills me completely, as if she was merely sleeping all this time, waiting for this moment. My pure white fur gleams in the moonlight, and some deep instinct tells me my name - Aura. But I can't focus on the wonder of finally finding my wolf, not with Alaric still bleeding before me.The mutant wolves retreat, but their corrupted scent lingers, reminding me how close we came to losing everything. How close I came to losing him. The memory of his blood mixing with mine, of power exploding through me when I thought I'd lose him forever, still burns in my veins.“We need to shift back,” I think frantically, trying to figure out how to access my human form.“Breathe,” a voice inside me soothes - my wolf, Aura. “Feel the change in your bones. Let it flow naturally.”Her presence in my

Alaric "The healing pack abilities are a threat to pack stability," Lord Marcus declares. "History shows us the dangers of unchecked power. Already she gains followers, already she challenges our traditional ways—""By healing our wounded?" I counter, barely containing my beast's rage. "By saving lives when our usual methods fail? If that’s the trade off then I don’t give a fuck what history shows!""It's not just about healing," Victoria's father interjects. "These abilities... they're unnatural. The old texts speak of powers that could control wolves' very natures. What's to stop her from—"The howls that cut him off carry notes I haven't heard in years - pure terror mixed with desperate warning. My beast recognizes the threat before my human mind can process it. These aren't normal patrol signals. These are primal, urgent. A warrior bursts through the council doors, bleeding from multiple wounds. "Mutant wolves... breached the borders... attacking the gardens..." He manages the

Sage The pendant feels different now that I know its history. Not just a mysterious link to my past, but potentially a key to ancient healing knowledge. If only I knew how to access it."Focus," the head healer instructs as I examine a warrior's infected wound. "Don't think about healing. Feel it."I close my eyes, letting my hands hover over the injury. There's something there - a sense of wrongness I can't quite explain. "The infection spreads deeper than it looks," I murmur. "Like threads of darkness under the skin.""Exactly." She sounds pleased. "The healing packs could sense illness this way. Reading the body's patterns, understanding what it needs."We've been testing these abilities all morning. Not the dramatic soul-healing the ancient texts describe, but practical applications of what seems to come naturally to me. My mysterious talent for knowing which herbs to combine, for sensing where injuries run deepest."It's like..." I struggle to explain as I work. "Like the body t

Alaric The scouts kneel before my throne, exhaustion clear in their postures. Three weeks in the northern territories has left them gaunt but determined."We found it, my King." The lead scout places a weathered scroll case at my feet. "Hidden in the mountains where the healing packs once lived."My beast stirs at the scent clinging to the artifacts - ancient herbs and something that reminds me of Sage's unique fragrance."The settlement was destroyed," another scout reports. "But some records survived in underground chambers. Records that tell a very different story than the one the Blackthorn Beta Female presented."I unroll the first scroll carefully, its edges crumbling with age. Detailed accounts of the healing packs fill the brittle pages - their abilities, their bloodlines, their sacred duty to protect all wolves."There's more." The lead scout hesitates. "We found evidence of an attack. Not by their own pack as was claimed, but by outsiders who feared their power."Garrett e

Sage The training room feels different in early morning solitude. My muscles remember the moves now, body flowing through sequences Alaric has drilled into me night after night. I catch glimpses of myself in the mirrored walls - not the scared omega from Blackthorn anymore, but someone stronger. Someone who knows how to fight back."Your form is improving."I don't startle at Iris's voice. Another change - I'm more aware of my surroundings now, harder to sneak up on."Alaric's a good teacher." When he's not distracting me with other activities, I don't add."Speaking of my brother's... teaching." Her grin turns wicked. "Those marks on your neck are new."Before I can sputter a response, voices approach the training room. Eris enters with her usual entourage, including Victoria and three other noble wolves."Well, well." Eris's smile shows teeth. "The little poison-maker, practicing her... skills."I continue my exercises, remembering Alaric's lessons about staying calm. "Good morning

Sage Small changes ripple through the pack in the days following the poisoning incident. Wolves still whisper when I pass, but some nod respectfully now. The warriors I saved make a point of greeting me publicly. Their families send quiet thanks through Iris. But at night, when I'm alone with my thoughts, doubt creeps in like poison. I know who I am now - a healer, someone who saves lives. But what about then? What about the memories that stay locked behind that dark wall in my mind?"You're brooding again," Iris declares, finding me in the garden. "I can practically smell the self-doubt.""Wouldn't you doubt?" I touch a moonflower petal. "Everyone keeps talking about how well I know poisons, how easily I recognized them. What if...""Don't." She grabs my hands. "Don't let their accusations make you question yourself.""But that's just it - I don't know myself. Not really." The words that have been haunting me spill out. "I know who I am now, but what about before? What if I really

Alaric "The practice is unnatural," Elder Marcus declares, his face twisted with revulsion. "We honor our dead, not mutilate them.""Two warriors are dead," I growl, barely containing my beast's rage. "Dead under suspicious circumstances that some are using to condemn an innocent wolf. You'd deny us the chance to prove her innocence because of tradition?"The council chamber fills with uneasy murmurs. No Alpha has ever suggested examining our dead this way before. But no Alpha has ever had their mate falsely accused of murder either."My King," Lord Harrison speaks carefully. "While we understand your... personal interest in clearing the omega's name, there are centuries of custom to consider."Phantom snarls at their inability to say Sage's name, to acknowledge her as pack. But I force my voice to remain steady. "And what of justice? What of truth?""There are other ways to investigate," Victoria's father suggests smoothly. "Ways that don't desecrate our fallen warriors."Before I c
