Alpha Sloane stands flanked by his elite guards, his power filling the laboratory like a physical presence. Unlike his son's calculated charm, Sloane's authority comes from ruthless pragmatism.

"Investigating treason." I step forward, placing myself between him and Sage. "Your son attempted to murder my mate."

Through our bond, I feel Sage's assessment of the new threat – counting guards, evaluating escape routes, calculating our odds if this turns violent.

"Serious accusations." Sloane's eyes move clinically around the laboratory, betraying no surprise at its contents. "Though I see you've already made yourself comfortable in my facilities."

"Your facilities?" Garrett's voice carries disgust. "You claim knowledge of these experiments?"

Sloane's expression remains impassive. "What I know or don't know about legitimate research in my territory is hardly your concern."

"Legitimate research?" Sage steps beside me, her outrage flowing through our bond. "You call creating monsters to

Cassius"They found the lab." Father's voice crackles through the secure line, his usual control slipping just enough to reveal genuine concern. "Your pet project has been compromised."I lean back in my chair, swirling aged whiskey as I consider this development. "How much did they see?""Everything. The mutants. The formulas. The targeting protocols."A prickle of irritation surfaces, but I maintain my composed facade. "And you let them leave with this information?""The female... her powers have evolved beyond our models. She claims to have memorized everything. All data. All formulas." Now Father sounds truly disturbed. "This development wasn't in any of our projections."Of course it wasn't. Their projections are based on ancient fears and outdated models. They've never truly understood what makes Sage special. What makes her... perfect."The council will be convening an emergency session," Father continues. "We need to prepare our position, reframe the narrative before—""Let me

SageMy mind catalogs everything we've discovered as we return to the packhouse – formulas, experiments, evidence of a conspiracy extending generations. Since the poison transformed my abilities, information organizes itself with crystal clarity, connections forming automatically between seemingly disparate details."She hasn't spoken in hours," I hear Garrett murmur to Alaric. "Is she—""Processing," Alaric replies, his confidence flowing through our bond. "Let her work."His faith in me warms something deep inside, even as I continue sorting through the mental library I've built. Names surface in connection with experimental protocols – council members, noble houses, wolves who have opposed us from the beginning. The packhouse comes into view, Helena and Iris waiting anxiously at the gates. Through our bond, I feel Alaric's relief at seeing them safe, his lingering fear that our enemies might have moved against his family while we were gone."You're back." Iris rushes forward, her us

AlaricDawn paints the sky blood-red as we depart, a small force of my most trusted warriors moving north with practiced stealth. Beside me, Sage rides in focused silence, her evolved senses already reaching ahead, searching for traces of corruption."Three hours to the facility coordinates," Garrett reports, studying the map one final time before we split up. "Based on patrol reports, they've been moving equipment for at least two days.""Which means anything critical is already gone." I scan the northern horizon, frustration simmering beneath my calm exterior. "But they always leave something behind."Through our bond, Sage's agreement flows clear as mountain water. Her powers have been cataloging everything we know about these facilities, finding patterns I would have missed."The main research would be evacuated first," she says, eyes distant as she accesses her mental library. "Transport vehicles described by the patrol are consistent with biological containment.""The mutants," I

SageThe packhouse erupts into controlled chaos when we return, evidence in hand and a plan forming between us. Through our bond, I feel Alaric's strategic mind already adapting to this new information, calculating risks and opportunities."Power extraction?" Garrett's expression darkens as we explain what we discovered. "Not just destroying abilities, but stealing them?""The technology appears experimental but functional." I spread the research documents we recovered across Alaric's desk. "They've successfully transferred minor abilities between test subjects. The convergence site is where they plan to scale up the process."Helena studies the ancient temple location marked on our map. "Sacred ground. Protected by ancient treaties. No single pack has jurisdiction there.""Perfect for their purposes," Alaric notes grimly. "The council can't officially interfere with activities there without unanimous agreement."Through our bond, I feel his frustration at these political complications

AlaricHer fear hits me through our bond like a physical blow – sharp, sudden, then fading as something interferes with her consciousness. My roar of rage silences even the battle around us, warriors freezing at the sound of their Alpha's fury."Sage." Her name tears from my throat as I abandon the diversion, racing toward her last known position. Through our bond, I feel her presence growing dimmer, consciousness slipping away."My King!" Garrett catches up to me, face grim with understanding. "What happened?""They have her." Three words that rip my world apart. "Cassius has her."My warriors rally instantly, forming an attack formation. But as we approach the water access point where she was working, a wall of corrupted energy erupts from the ground – black lightning crackling between ancient stones, forming an impenetrable barrier."They were waiting for us." Garrett tests the barrier, jerking back as corruption burns his skin. "This was a trap."Through our bond, I reach desperate

AlaricThe ancient temple texts pointed to what we needed – ceremonial passages beneath the sacred grounds, pathways for spiritual journeys now forgotten by modern wolves. While Cassius's barriers block all surface approaches, he's overlooked what lies beneath."The entrance should be here." I brush centuries of debris from stone marked with the crescent moon. "Used by spiritual leaders to access the temple heart unseen."My warriors work quickly, clearing the concealed entrance. Through our bond, I feel Sage's growing horror as Cassius reveals more of his plan. The threat to our mate bond sends fury coursing through my veins, but I channel it into focus, into determination. The passage finally opens, narrow stairs descending into darkness. Not all warriors will fit – this route was designed for ritual, not invasion."I go alone," I decide, silencing protests with a look. "The rest maintain pressure on the barriers. Create the illusion of a desperate, disorganized assault."Garrett cla

SageVictory's sweetness lasts mere moments. We've barely left the temple grounds when a scout races toward us, blood staining his uniform, eyes wild with urgency."My King!" He drops to one knee before Alaric, breathing heavily. "The kingdom—mutant wolves—everywhere."Through our bond, Alaric's triumph turns to cold dread. "Report. Clearly.""While you were occupied here, coordinated attacks began across all territories." The scout's voice steadies as he delivers the grim news. "Hundreds of mutant wolves, more advanced than any we've encountered. They struck simultaneously—villages, outposts, even the packhouse itself."Ice slides down my spine as understanding dawns. The temple operation wasn't Cassius's true endgame—it was the distraction."Helena? Iris?" Alaric's voice holds deadly calm."Safe, my King. They led the defense of the packhouse. But many others..." SageThe first wave hits the eastern villages shortly after noon. I arrive with a team of healers to find destruction beyond what we anticipated—houses burning, civilians wounded, warriors engaged in desperate combat with creatures more evolved than any we've yet encountered. These aren't mindless beasts. They move with frightening intelligence, coordinating attacks, setting ambushes, targeting the most vulnerable with eerie precision.Without hesitation, I establish a field hospital in the village square, organizing healers to triage the wounded. But as more injured arrive, I realize traditional methods won't be enough and I can’t be everywhere at once. Or maybe I can. "Keep them stable," I instruct the other healers before stepping into the center of the square. My powers have evolved beyond what anyone—even I—fully understands. As I close my eyes and extend my senses, I feel every injury within range, every corrupted wound, every life hanging in balance.Golden light extends from m

LyraElara and I sit in silence as we both continue to ponder what the Northern delegation has planned. But soon, the quiet feels stifling and I feel the need to speak aloud the thoughts assaulting me. The amulet I wear seems to warm against my skin as the threat crystallizes."Elder Thalia said they need three elements for the binding ritual—the full moon's power, a healer of the Silverspiral bloodline, and the divided heir." I whisper, the small sound loud in the utter silence. "The divided heir," Elara repeats softly. "That's what I keep seeing in my visions—Alexander literally torn in two, one half glowing with healing light, one consumed by Alpha power.""Is such a thing even possible?" I ask, though I already fear the answer."There are ancient rituals that can separate essence from form," she confirms, echoing what I told Alexander earlier. "My mother found references to them in texts preserved from before the purges. They were forbidden practices, considered too dangerous and

LyraThe hidden chamber feels like both a sanctuary and a prison as hours crawl by with excruciating slowness. My injuries throb despite the rudimentary treatment Alexander and I managed before he left, but the physical pain pales compared to the ache of separation. The mate bond stretches between us, a silver thread that pulses with each passing minute, somehow both comforting and torturous in its reminder of what fate decreed and circumstances deny.I pace the small space, cataloging my surroundings more thoroughly now that I'm alone. The chamber is circular, clearly built within one of the palace's towers. A narrow bed occupies one wall, a small table with two chairs stands in the center, and a fireplace provides both warmth and the means to heat water or cook simple meals. Shelves hold basic supplies—preserved food, medical materials, candles, blankets—suggesting this place was designed for extended hiding if necessary. No windows offer a glimpse of the outside world, only a small

Alexander"They need you specifically for the binding ritual to work." I mutter to myself, but Lyra picks up my train of thought."Which is why Selene led the attack herself." She says grimly. "She spotted me trying to escape. I used everything I know about the forest to lose her, but she pursued me for miles." She indicates her injuries. "I didn't escape unscathed.""How did you find your way here?" Dominic asks, suspicion edging his voice, making me growl under my breath. "The palace is heavily guarded, especially during the Gala."Lyra's gaze returns to me. "I followed the bond. It led me here—like a silver thread pulling me toward safety. I knew it was dangerous to come to the palace, but somehow I also knew it was the only place I'd be safe from her."The simple truth of her words reverberates through our connection. She came to me—to her true mate—instinctively seeking protection even at great risk to herself."We need to get you somewhere safer than this garden," I say, assessi

AlexanderThe remainder of the Gala passes in a blur of forced smiles and diplomatic niceties. I perform my duties mechanically—dancing with potential matches, engaging in political small talk, maintaining the façade of the dutiful heir considering his options. But my thoughts remain fixed on the conversation with Selene in the garden, her veiled threats echoing in my mind."The final night of the Gala approaches. Traditionally, the heir makes his intentions clear by then. I would hate for... misunderstandings to arise."What did she know about Lyra? How much had she discovered about our meeting in the forest? The questions circle endlessly as I navigate the crowded ballroom, accepting congratulations on my upcoming coronation from nobles who have no idea of the turmoil beneath my carefully composed exterior."You're distracted tonight," Dominic murmurs as he appears at my side, offering a much-needed glass of water. "More than usual.""Something's wrong," I reply under my breath. "Se

Lyra "Or another of your bloodline, though few remain." Thalia’s words bring me back to the present as she reaches for my hands, clasping them in her own. "The Northern delegation seeks a Silverspiral healer for their ritual. Whatever they plan, it involves the prophecy, the Lycan heir, and the disruption of the true mate bond you now share.""But why? What could they hope to gain?""Power," she says simply. "Control over the balanced power that the prophecy promises. If they can bind the heir to their bloodline instead of his true mate, they might redirect the fulfillment of the prophecy to serve their purposes."My mind races, connecting fragments of overheard conversations with this new information. "I overheard them speaking of a binding ceremony, of needing a healer of pure bloodline for a ritual to work properly.""A perversion of ancient magic," Thalia growls. "They would use your blood—your essence—to create a false bond between the prince and their princess, overriding the t

LyraI follow the hidden paths back to our secondary encampment, my mind still reeling from the encounter with Alexander. Every step increases the distance between us, and with it comes a physical ache I've only heard described in tales of true mates separated. The silver bond stretches taut between us, a constant reminder of what fate has decreed and duty denies. The dream flowers in my basket seem to pulse with their own soft luminescence in the fading light, their scent more potent than usual—or perhaps my senses are simply heightened by the awakening of the mate bond. Either way, their presence is a tangible reminder of my responsibilities to my people, responsibilities that now seem at odds with the pull of my heart. Our emergency settlement is well-concealed, nestled against a cliff face with natural caves providing shelter. Unlike our permanent enclave, this location is sparse, functional, designed for temporary safety rather than comfort. As I approach, I sense rather than see

But I’ve never lied to her before, and I don’t intend to start now. "I found my true mate today," I say finally, the words both liberating and damning. "A healer named Lyra, from one of the hidden communities."Elara gasps softly while my mother's expression transforms from shock to a complex mixture of joy and concern. "The mate bond—you're certain?""As certain as you and Father were," I confirm. "The silver connection, instantaneous and undeniable.""Oh, Alex," Elara breathes, understanding immediately the impossible position I'm in. "The Choosing Gala, Princess Selene, the prophecy...""All pointing me in one direction," I finish grimly, "while fate pulls me in another."My mother rises, coming to me, her hands cool against my face as she studies me with those violet eyes so like my own. "A true mate is a gift beyond

Alexander The Grand Ballroom is even more crowded than the previous night, the competition among potential matches growing as the Gala progresses. By tradition, I should be narrowing my preferences, spending more time with those I find most suitable. Instead, I move mechanically through the required dances, my thoughts a thousand miles away in a forest clearing with a woman whose touch brought balance to my warring nature."Your Highness seems distracted tonight," observes Lady Mirella, the daughter of an influential Alpha from the Western territories, as we complete our obligatory dance."Forgive me," I say automatically. "Many matters require my attention with the coronation approaching."She simpers appropriately, but I can see the calculation in her eyes. All of them are watching, evaluating, strategizing—except Selene, who stands across the room in conversation with my father, her poise perfect as always but her gaze finding me repeatedly.I've successfully avoided her so far, pl

AlexanderEvery step away from Lyra feels wrong—physically painful in a way I've never experienced. The silver thread of our mate bond stretches but doesn't break, a constant pull urging me to turn back, to claim what fate has decreed is mine. My head pounds and my dual nature—healing and Alpha—roils inside me, more unsettled than ever before."Alex?" Dominic's voice breaks through my inner turmoil. "You need to slow down. You're practically running."I realize I've been striding through the forest at a punishing pace, as if physical distance might somehow diminish the connection I feel to her. I stop abruptly, bracing one hand against a tree trunk, struggling to bring my breathing under control."A true mate," I say, the words hollow with disbelief. "Now, of all times."Dominic says nothing, just watches me with concern etched on his features. He was there, he saw the connection spark between us, but he can't feel what I'm feeling—the bone-deep certainty colliding with equally powerfu
