“Look, Drake! It’s your favorite! Daisies!” I say to my baby son as we take our morning turn around the garden.

I’m not sure Drake is old enough to have a favorite flower, but he does always smile at the daisies, so I’ve decided to just go with it.

As usual, Drake smiles and reaches for the daisies with a chubby fist when I sit us down next to them.

“No, if we grab them, then they lose all their petals,” I admonish him gently.

“A great shame, indeed,” a voice chimes in behind me.

I turn and see a feeder in yellow standing in the garden. “Oh!” I say. “How lovely to see you! I keep telling the feeders they should come up to the main gardens sometimes, but they never do. I’m glad to see someone took my invitation to heart. You’re Uther, right?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. Uther West,” he replies. He wiggles his fingers at Drake. “And you must be the young prince. Such a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“You make a good point,” I murmur. “I should take Drake down to see the feeders. It’s

That done, I think you’re right. We should join the search parties.” He sets down the royal seal and hands the letter to Zeke, his second in command. “See that this gets sent off. And hold down the fort while we’re gone.”“Yes, Your Majesty,” Zeke replies, looking sleep-deprived and mournful himself.Rafe alerted citizens all over the kingdom of Drake’s kidnapping as soon as he knew he was missing. Now, everyone from the highest-ranking soldiers to young children are combing the shoreline of Fang Lake and the woods surrounding it.“In case they doubled back, I’ve also told our people who do not live near the lake to be on the lookout,” he tells me.I nod, pacing in front of his

And where are you hiding Riley Brodcraz?” I demand.“Your Majesty, I think you have the wrong idea,” the envoy says. “We’re not here about your son. We have no idea where he is. Why, I just heard about his kidnapping when we arrived. I’m sorry, Your Majesty, I can’t help you.”The envoy leader isn’t even a very good liar, but he has the shield of diplomacy around him, so I decide to bide my time.‘We could take him to the dungeon and rack him until he talks,’ Zeke suggests telepathically.‘Don’t tempt me,’ I reply. I stand before the envoy, letting my eyes glow blood-red so that he knows I’m deadly serious. “If you know something, and I find out that you know something, your death will be slow and painful.”“Your Majesty, I serve King Maximus Lupus of Rallegrad. Your threats could be considered an act of war,” the man sniffs.‘He’s an idiot if he thinks some political gamesmanship i

I myself was out looking with a team of scouts this morning.”“Thank you,” I reply. “But that’s not what brings us here today.”The advisors look confused. “But, Your Majesty, nothing can possibly be more important than finding the prince,” another advisor says.“No. Nothing is more important than finding the prince. You’re right,” I respond. “But I have had an envoy from Rallegrad today.”All of the advisors growl or hiss. “They have sent a ransom note?”“King Maximus denies any knowledge of what Princess Riley has done,” I inform them. “He sent th

Then I see its pink nose and long whiskers twitch out to sniff the air.I don’t move. I don’t want it to see or smell me.The rat begins to skitter forward.I settle back onto my haunches, ready to spring. Three… two….“Hello in there!” a voice calls. The rat squeaks and runs away.I growl and pad over to see the newcomer, baring my teeth in my wolf form. I curse Riley for taking him away and let out a broken howl.Rafe comes into the nursery moments later. “Oh, love,” he whispers and pulls me into his arms.“I know Zeke told us to stay here just in case they’re planning to do something to you, but I can’t stand it, Rafe. I can’t stand not being out there looking for our baby,” I sob.“I know.” He rubs his hands up and down my back, trying to comfort me. “I can’t stand it either. I think I will call Zeke back to the castle and tell him we’re going to take over. I feel like I’m climbing the walls.”“We’ll watch over each other. Then there won’t be any reason for Zeke to worry,” I decide.“I like that plan.” He kisses me. “Come to bed for now. *Rafe*The ride home gives me a mix of elation and sorrow. Being by Ainslee’s side in the carriage with our son on her lap makes me feel complete, and Ainslee’s family was so happy to get to spend a few days with her and the baby before we left for home. We’re met along the way by my people celebrating our victory and sharing our joy, but among those are those who have lost so much.We stop the carriage when we notice a young girl crying as she is comforted by a woman whom I learn is her aunt. She explains that the girl’s home is in the north and was destroyed in the carnage. Her parents were killed, leaving her with nothing.“I think the gods that she was staying with us,” the woman tells me.Ainslee speaks to her while I pull Zeke aside. “Ensure this family is taken care of.”He nods with understanding. Anger churns inside me at this encounter and dozens more like it along the trip. It makes it that much easier to deal with the evil men responsible upon return. The day after our ret

Just knowing that he’s safe and near me is a comfort.“Maybe because we were separated for so long,” Rafe replies. He strokes my cheek. “But I have an idea of how to make it better.”I raise an eyebrow at him. “I’m sure you do.”“Honest. It’s not about sex, it’s about reuniting,” he tells me.“Hmm.” I wonder if either of us have the energy for sex.“It’s worth a try,” he says.“All right,” I agree. I sit up with some effort, and he scoots out of bed to start taking off his clothes. When he looks over at me, he blinks. “I didn’t realize you were in full ballroom attire.”“This was for the mating ceremony that was supposed to happen yesterday,” I explain. His eyes n

Rafe isn’t here, and my father will have his way.Marcus stands at the door of the temple, looking just as somber as Lucia. He is wearing Longclaw black and silver and looks quite nice in it. It should be Lucia approaching him now in a dress suited to her. But instead, it’s me, and my father, standing at the other side of the door, is the only one who looks happy about it.“You don’t have to be here, Lucia,” I whisper to her. “This is going to be terribly difficult for you.”She squares her shoulders. “I would walk through fire for you. Do you not remember the temple where you saved me? Only now I realized that on the same occasions that she visited since I’ve been here, my father found excuses to be away. He’d insisted that he felt no pain since she’d remarried, and I wonder if his brain injury had some effect on the severed mate bond.I’m staring at my canopy again when Lucia comes in with tea. “This is chamomile,” she says, helping me sit up and then pressing the teacup into my hands. “It should help your stomach and settle your nerves.”I look at her, and my heart sinks. “I’m sorry, Lucia.
