SASKIA'S POV

☽☽☽

My pocketknife flinches at his neck, and I roll a sigh of despair into escape at his grisly joke. "You aren't funny, Wade."

"I see you still got it, Luna." He tucks away his blade in his pocket, chuckling happily as if he'd been handed his favourite pie on a silver platter.

"Do I?" I keep my knife staid at his pulsing vein. His face rumples in confusion. I smile as his hands slowly grace the air over his head in unfailing surrender.

"Will you end me today, Luna?" He teases, and I push the pointy end into his skin. It sinks in, a streak of blood running down.

"I don't know, will I?" I keep my eyes on him as I swiftly drill into his back pocket, seizing his weapon.

"How would I know?" He lets his shoulders heave and drop in nonchalance, and I contemplate knocking him out.

"You should know. After the shit you just pulled, you should have expected my reaction."

"Really?" His eyes expand, growing rounder, but the cycling humour does not disappear. It tours ab

☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ Since I have no key, I merely close the door after kicking my new dagger behind the couch. I’ll find a more fitting place for it when I’m back. There’s a skip in my steps as I close the distance from the house to the greater orbit of the pack. I select a path where I don’t see any were, and after an expeditious warmup, I shoot off. It was cold enough to freeze ice last night, so I should be worried about the condition of the ground. However, I suspend the small concern niggling at me at reconvening an image of the sun, which was high up less than fifteen minutes ago, linked with the fact that the atmosphere is not chilly, and neither is the temperature frigid cold. Big mistake. The traction between my sneakers and the ground disappears in an instant. Shit. I thrash about, watching my life flash before my eyes. It happens as if in slow motion. I try to break my fall by shifting my body, so my weight rests on my lower limbs, and I don’t fall flat on my back,

☽☽☽MIKAEL'S POV☾☾☾I sensed her distress metres away. It'd ruched in bows of belligerent pain and the desire to be weaned from it. However, when I get in her notice, it shuts off, and the connection I'd drawn on splits in two. It's exceptionally bizarre since it is as if she'd rapidly stopped giving off cues of her discomfort without any problem. How long must it have taken her to perfect the skill of subtlety?"Give him permission to help me up." She motions at Makwa with an impatient impression that targets me about her."Why shall I give him a permit to do so when I can assist my own wife myself?"She blinks, head tilting like a doll's. A fair Luna she's made. Will she make an equally as good one in other areas? I know not, but I certainly would love to see her progress in due time."What happened to you, love?" I lower to her level on the ground and attempt to inspect the cause of her agony until I realise that the Beta still endures by us both. With a flick of a hand at him, hi

"I don't hate you, per se. We aren't buddies either. I forgive people when they are sorry for what they've done. You're not. So there's nothing to pardon.""Why do you harbour grudges for so long?" I've been considerate and patient so far, but there's been no change in her demeanour. I'm curious to know why she's so spiteful. Does she enjoy keeping malice?"It's not even been a day. How's that long?" She squints at me as if to glimpse something novel she hasn't before, then sighs deeply. "To answer your question, I retain the resentments I have towards people for a reasonable while as I don't want to forget what they've done and let myself be tricked or hurt by the same ploy anew.""How would you relate your reasoning to our situation?" I like the sleekness of her voice, so I ask for more clarifica

☽☽☽MIKAEL'S POV☾☾☾ "The bastard refuses to speak!" I fling the blasted papers off the table. Stupid reports that have no meaning litter the floor, and I tramp over them, grabbing my glass of brown liquid on my way to the small cut-out window. "It's been five fucking days!" "Maybe you've not tried enough," the foul-mouthed wolf taunts from his perch on the couch. "Your methods have always been inadequate from time, Alpha. I advise that you adopt mine, which has proven to yield better results." Snorting derisively, I flash my hand back and forth. "Save your breath," I suggest with an unsubtle glare. "I will not." "Why?" He pretends to be genuinely hurt, eyes awide, mouth slightly agape. "Conceivably..." I drawl, drenching my words in sarcasm. I'd take to mockery if it would make me feel the best as I fain for, but it'll not. Nothing will ease this foul mood of mine. "Possibly, it is that your methods involve maiming as a first resort. It might plainly be that reason, Fabian." He

Mind you, she’s capable of deactivating cloaking spells, or rather, as she prefers to do, she sees through them. Apart from testing the strength of the pack, there were no benefits of the mission.” I scowl, taking stock of information that was not previously revealed to me. My advancement towards Fabian has his head snapping up to meet me with both eyebrows hoisted up in interrogation. “You searched for the key without mentioning of it?” “What?” He proudly wears an ardent frown. “Did you not heed when I said that I would make my objective of infiltrating the pack a double-edged sword, cutting down two queries at the same time?” “You might have said that,” my expression decays into that of a man vexed to no ends. “But you did not make me apprehend it. ☽☽☽MIKAEL'S POV☾☾☾ "Welcome to Guttenbrieg. How have you been today?" She keeps it simple and formal, as she must be ignorant of whether the guest ranks higher than I. He doesn't, of course. But her necessary precaution entails initiative. "I have been well, Luna. Great now in your presence." Fabian ogles her appreciatively. My fist balls on my lap beneath the table. I want to bash his nose into his skull. "Saskia, this is the Alpha of Duttan, Fabian. You are free to address him however you wish." I alert her of the prerogative she owns, spelling out in bold that Fabian is below me and not the other way around. "Fabian, meet my wife, Saskia, former princess of Westardum, now Luna of Guttenbrieg." "It is a pleasure to meet you, Alpha." She nods, according to him due respect but with a minute change in how she regards him. In the present, she looks down at him without difficulty. "The honour is all mine, Luna. Completely mine." His scrutiny transmutes into something perverted as

Nevertheless, since his plan was to steal the peace and pleasure I'd have enjoyed on my own, mine was to make him miserable.Glaring at him, I'd tendered my half of the bargain. "I have my own condition too."His focus narrowed on me, and a childish thrill zipped through my nerve endings as I relished holding the hub of his attraction. "And that is?""You have to bake with me." He'd reared back in shock, trauma walloping down his features as if he were going through an ordeal. I fought the urge to laugh, letting it taper off, a dull reverberation in my stomach, as if I started, I would not be stopping any soon. "It's a good idea, right?"I could have sworn I caught his hackles rise in plain sight. He'd whitened to ash, which was the most hilarious thing in history. I could well send him to the grave if I requested that he do this, cooking and othe

He strokes his clean-shaven chin, and it hits me all over again that he's no longer sporting a beard. It's flabbergasting to me that there's no difference to be noted, except his jaw is considerably more defined and visible. I don't know many males who do not regress down in years when they cut off the full brush on their face. Their features ordinarily lose the maturity possessed beforehand with the beard. Not Mikael. What I'm saying makes scarce sense, but not a single ounce of manliness has faded from him. He might be more attractive now, even. No more are the distractions from his icy blue eyes, which smoulder brilliantly, scorching me through the puffy sleeves of my winter jacket. I battle the sudden urge to hide behind a barricade. ☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ "You know that's not how things work, Saskia." Wade's reply snags my focus, and I change my train of thought. "Once I pledge my loyalty to an Alpha, I become bound to him as one of his pack. The fact that I did already means that I was accepted. The only creature allowed to admit me into Guttenbrieg is its Alpha." I squeeze my eyes shut as a tremble shakes me to my core. It's difficult to process what Wade's made plain. I don't want to try because it's fatuous to do so. It would be pure idiocy to believe that Mikael's dead. It honestly can't be. I would know. As the woman who married him, who's mated with him, and most of all, as one who has come to love him artlessly, I would have known. I, of all people, should have felt him slipping away from this world. The planet should have felt off-center, tilted off-axis when he took his last breath. How could I not have known? What was I doing when—according to their hypotheses—he died? How could I have carried on w

☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ Kaleb Sacramone makes no sense. No sense at all. Mikael's not dead. The man I talked to mere hours ago was everything but dead. Guttenbrieg's Lieutenant General often sucked at making coherent sense, but this is simply ridiculous. How dare he fake Mikael's death only to get under my skin? I might have slapped him if I didn't think he was insane. The werewolf needs a psychiatric intervention coupled with enough mental evaluations. His days in the dungeon must have turned him unhinged, a deranged creature. I make a mental reminder to request an appointment for him immediately after this is over. "Who is dead?" I parrot, pausing for him to assert that this is all a joke and rescind those hideous words. "Mikael isn't dead." Kaleb laughs in my face. Outright does so. I contemplate pulling out my daggers and holding them to his neck, drawing blood for his insolence. I fist my hands to keep from heeding any rash decisions. "Do you have hearing problems, Saskia? ☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ You're such a fool, Saskia. The berating arrives only after the fibres of my undies have suffered the deluge of an Olympic-sized pool. It's embarrassing. My body still throbs for Mikael even after learning about his misdeeds. Even directly beside the man who's made himself vulnerable by disclosing a secret he's kept for years to me about his emotions, I'm thirsting for and craving the attention of a man who's bent on using me without a care for how much I'll hurt as a result of his evil deceitfulness. It's so ludicrous. I missed him before I knew what he'd done. And now that I know the crimes he's committed, I miss him maybe even more. Frankly, I just want him to come home so we can have an earnest discussion. I want to hear the truth from the horse's mouth. If I could help it, I'd pick up my phone and call him to hurry up and head back to the pack. I won't, of course. First, I have no inkling of my phone's whereabouts. Second, I wouldn't dream of hindering

☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ "Ignore what I said." "Okay." I can't. I swallow hard, glueing my sight to the road. Wade loves me? Perhaps he means as a friend. But we were talking about Mikael as a baseline. The Alpha wouldn't love me as a friend as I'm his wife. Moreover, that wouldn't be a kind of love worth being broached in chatter by another wolf. Things genuinely just got incredibly weirder. And awkwarder. My head feels like there's been a crater blasted into it. The indented hollowness is the equivalent of a cavity, and I find myself scrambling to fill my head with reflections other than that which refuses to dissipate: Wade loves me. I love him too, I realise. I love him as one who's been by my side for ages, one whom I've relied on in the thickest of battles, one who's never shied away from being a firm shoulder I could cry on. I love him for being an incredible person, but I have never dwelt on what kind of love it is. It's always been common sense that we care for each other l

☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ Wade's hand is fisted by his side when I return to scrutinising him. "I w-wish I realised...earlier that this was how... you'd been feeling. I was too occupied...and engaged by my self-imposed job of being...the happy-go-lucky guy. I never noticed...that you were burdened...by how we all treated you. I'm sorry, Saskia." He lingers between his words, trying to catch his breath and possibly summon the strength to speak. My heart clenches in my chest. I wish I could take away his pain and make it nonexistent. He doesn't deserve what Absalon did to him. I guess the thought that's been keeping me restless is the odds that his injuries aren't from Absalon's antics, as he claims, but from the destruction I caused with my powers. I can't yet envision forgiving myself for what I've done so far; if I was the one who truly hurt Wade, I know I'd truly never be able to grant myself forgiveness. It wouldn't matter how many years might pass; I'd continue to hate myself for

☾☾☾ SASKIA'S POV ☽☽☽ Wade is a damned liar. I should have known better than to trust him to tell me the truth about how he felt. Even more annoying is that he clearly fooled me with his charms. While I often harped on the fact that werewolves could make themselves more attractive to others through their supernatural magnetism, I'd forgotten the fact that, in specific, they could conceal defects about themselves. In my state of despair, I'd become easily subject to his prowess. He'd gotten the chance to disguise the true extent of his injuries. If I say I'm not entirely beyond pissed off, then I'd be telling a lie—something those I cherish as friends and family seem adept at doing when I'm involved. "You don't need to do this." Wade coughs, a shadow of himself, having drained up to half the quota of blood in his body. I eye him in irritation. Is there any time he doesn't annoy me like it's a hobby of his? "I'll do what I want, Wade. Kindly shut the fuck up while I do." I want to

☽☽☽MIKAEL'S POV☾☾☾ "What the...fucking...hell was that?" I scramble to rise, but my efforts are thwarted by a force field smashing my length to the ground. It all clicks in at once: magic. The weight on my spine, crushing my neck and torso to the ground, is of a mammoth's mass in thousands of tonnes. I snarl as the invisible load intensifies at my joints, breaking my bones. Whatever witch is responsible must be incredibly skillful. It's a hellish experience that might have had a more inexperienced version of myself centuries ago whimpering in pain. I've long learnt to endure worse. Warning bells wail in my head. It's evident Cillian and Whelan planned this from the genesis of our interaction. I'd been too blinded by my fury to see through their plan. Cillian hammers on this point with his utterance, "you were an idiot not to suspect the cause of our visit, Mikael." My hateful gaze pans upward, but it does not land on Cillian. Instead, Absalon's distasteful countenance is caught

☽☽☽MIKAEL'S POV☾☾☾ A scowl overtakes my cast as I set eyes on the fair-headed man bent over a walking stick, not from age but for a ruse. "Missed the train home, Whelan?" The bitterness yet stored within seeps into my tone. "Whelan?" The old, heavy voice rumbles like a clap of thunder rolling down the beak of a mountain. Long ago, in a distant land bound by time, I'd been a lad afraid of its owner. "I imagined I was once Seanathair to you, Mikael. Ain't it so, Cillian?" Cillian pulls further out from the woods—left untouched and spared from Saskia's dismantling—at the query. I do not give the coward a chance to voice his opinion. "You mean nothing to me. I don't remember a grandfather. Nay, I recall a sadistic fiend who gloated in sacrificing others for his evil causes—his family included." As patronising as the word might ever entail, Whelan corrects, "Family means naught without loyalty. I attack not those under my wings. You must've understood that by now, Alpha of Guttenbrie
