I stood with my forehead against the window, staring at two beds next to each other in an isolated hospital room. The nurses administering fluids wore masks on their faces, and every change of dressing on their bodies made them turn their heads, unable to stand the sight.

I was exhausted and wanted to howl in despair, but I couldn't—or maybe I shouldn't—because even seeing Arthur and Daliah like that, I knew I couldn't help them until I finished this process with Seamus.

No one said anything, but I could read in their faces that Seamus had arranged it. Even though his fingerprints weren't on anything of the crime scene, I knew he was the one pulling all the strings. This was his message to me, his warning.

Don't try to win with me, little one, because you will fail and lose everything.
