Chapter 7

Lyra's POV

“I'm watching you,” she mouthed right before I left the room, and I felt cold, spider-like fingers crawl up my spine.

I followed behind the guard, my eyes darting to every corner of the hallway. I didn't have the opportunity to check it out before but now, I just realised how spacious the hallway was, with doors on either side.

The smell of fresh paint and flowers tickled my senses. I squinted at the odd paintings on the wall. I had seen them before. I shut my eyes, trying to recall, but there was nothing. I reached out to one of them.

“Don’t touch that,” The guard barked, and I jumped backward.

My heart threatened to break through my ribs. “I’m sorry. I just….” I looked around hoping no one else had seen me try to touch the painting.

Where had my manners gone? I couldn't touch anything here.

“This way,” he stretched his hand towards a passage.

“I’m sorry,” I mouthed before moving in the direction he pointed. My feet glided across the smooth, cold marble floor
