I wake up on the floor of a cave. My vision is still blurry, and my head is spinning, but I think I can make out the shape of bars around me.

I am confused.

Why am I in a cave? And why are there bars on the door?

I try to stand up, but the room starts to spin, and I fall back down.

I am dizzy.

I try to crawl away from the bars, but I slip, and I feel my body hit the floor.

I don't know what is happening.

When I try to get up again, I start to lose my balance.

My vision is getting even blurrier.

I feel weak. So weak.

I look down and realize I am covered in blood-- matted in it, even.

It's on my legs, my belly, my paws. It's even on my back, which I can't see.

I touch it, and the pain stings.

I try to stop the bleeding, but I can't.

My sight is fading.

I'm so cold, and I'm struggling to breathe.

My lungs are burning, but I force myself to inhale anyway. I know that if I stop breathing, I will die.

My vision is still blurry, but I can see the bars.

I can't remember how I got here.

I try to remember how I ended up in the cave or why there are bars on the door.

But I can't. I can't remember anything.

What is happening?

I feel lightheaded, and I collapse against the floor.

My head is spinning, and my vision is getting worse.

I close my eyes and force myself to breathe.

I think I'm going to vomit.

I pull myself away from the floor, and I force myself to get on all fours.

I am shaking from head to toe, but I get to my feet and run to the bars. I don't know where I am, but something inside me knows I have to get out of here.

I look for something to hold onto, but the room is spinning, and I am losing my footing.

I know it's a bad idea, but I try to make my way to the cell door. It seems impossible, but I feel as though I have to try.

I summon all of my strength and courage, but it's no use. I am too weak to make it there.

My legs give out, and I collapse against the wall.

I start to feel cold, and suddenly everything goes black.

I have no idea how much time has passed when I finally come to again. When I do, I'm surprised to discover I am not alone.

"Oh, good, you're awake," I hear a voice say.

There is a wolf in the cell next to me, I realize. I can't see him, but I can hear him. And there's something oddly comforting in knowing he's there.

"Are you alright?" he asks.

"I-- I'm not sure," I say.

"What happened to you?" he asks. "How did you wind up here?"

"I-- I don't know," I say.

"Think," he says. "Where are you from? How did you get here?"

I try to remember.

"I-- I'm not sure," I say again.

"Try," he says. "Think."

I try to remember why I'm here.

I try to remember where I'm from.

But try as I might, I can't.

It's all a blur.

And then, suddenly, it all comes flooding back to me. The murder of my pack. The way I sought refuge with a new pack only to be forced to accept a mate I didn't want. The fight with Impala.

"Did you remember something?" he asks.

I nod, and I start to sob.

"Everything is gone," I say.

"What do you mean?" he asks.

I start to sob again.

"Everything is gone," I say. "Everyone is dead. I am all alone."

"You are not alone," he says. "I'm here."

I want to say something, to acknowledge his kindness, but I can't. I am crying too hard.

"It's okay," he says, his voice calm and soothing. "It's going to be okay."

"How?" I ask. "We're trapped in a cage."

"True," he says. "But we're alive. And we have each other. We'll figure something out."

"I-- I don't know," I say.

"It's going to be okay," he replies. "I promise."

"I-- I'm sorry," I say. "I don't even know your name."

"I'm Ajax," he says.

"I'm Victoria," I say.

"I'm so glad to meet you, Victoria," he says. "It's been a long time since I've had company in here."

"How long have you been here?" I ask.

"I don't know," he says. "A while. Somewhere along the way, I lost track of the days."

I shudder. I can't stand the idea of being trapped in here that long.

"I don't know about you, but I'm starving," he says. "Do you think you could eat anything?"

I think about it for a minute.

"Maybe. Is there any food around here?"

"I don't know," he says, "but I'll look around and see what I can find."

"Thank you," I say.

I don't know why, but I feel safe with Ajax.

I have no idea how to explain it, but there is something about him that puts me at ease. I know it's dangerous to feel so at ease in a place like this-- a place where the unknown threatens to take over at any given moment—but I can't help myself.

It's not just that he's nice to me.

It's that he knows what to do, and he's not afraid of it.

Ajax is a wolf I can trust.

Or, at least, I think so. The truth is, I don't really know him at all.

"What about you?" I ask. "How did you wind up in here?"

Suddenly, Ajax goes quiet. For a moment, I think maybe he didn't hear me. I'm about to ask the question again when I hear his voice.

"I'm in jail for being a traitor to my pack."

  • The Luna's Choice   CHAPTER SEVEN

It seems impossible. Ajax, a traitor? But I don't want to question it. It doesn't seem like the right time or place. "I don't want to pry," I say. "If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine, but--""No, it's okay," he says. "I'm just not sure where to begin.""How about the beginning?" I ask, smiling at him."The beginning?" he says. "It all started the day my father died.""Your father died?" I ask."He was my alpha, and he was the one I looked up to-- the one I aspired to be like," he says. "He was brave and strong. I wanted to be just like him. And I was, too. But then, he died.""I'm so sorry," I say."It was a long time ago," he says.I can tell he's about to say more-- that he wants to tell me everything, but before he can, someone else appears in the cave. I can't see them, but I can hear their footsteps approaching.I watch as they approach the cage where I am being held and am surprised when they open it."Come" the man says in a gruff voice."Where?" I ask

"Are you finished?"I turn and look. The man from before, the one known as the guard, is standing just outside the door.I am nervous and I don't know what to say, but I don't want to say the wrong thing and get into trouble.I have no idea what the Alpha expects of me, and I have no idea how much trouble I can get into. The only way this is going to work is if I follow their rules. If I play by the rules and do what they say, I might get a chance at escape."I-- I need your help," I say. "I don't know what to do.""Then let me help you," he says."I don't know what the Alpha expects," I say."Just follow my lead and you'll be fine.""But--" I start to say."Just do what I say."I hesitate, but then I realize there's no other way, so with a nod, I agree to follow his lead.He tells me that I'm to get dressed in the clothes that are set before me, in the little basket. At first, I'm confused, as there aren't any clothes in the little basket, but then I realize he's talkin

  • The Luna's Choice   CHAPTER NINE

Once the Alpha signs off and my dress is finished, I am taken back to my cell. I am relieved to find Ajax is still there."How was it?" he asks."Dreadful," I say, sitting down on the edge of the cot, my hands folded in my lap."I'm not surprised," he says. "Brian is the worst.""Brian?" I ask."The Alpha," Ajax clarifies. "His name is Brian.""Oh," I say. "I hate him already.""Me too," he says. For a moment, there is a silence between us. I wonder what he is thinking."But you're still going to go through with the wedding?" he asks, finally."I have to," I say. "I don't have a choice."Again, there is silence. I find myself wondering about Ajax and Brian-- wondering if Ajax being down here has anything to do with his hatred of the alpha. I decide to ask. After all, he asked me about how I got here. It seems only fair for me to be allowed to ask too."Is Brian why you're down here?" I ask."Yes," he says.He is quiet again, and for a moment, I think that's all he's goi

Ajax looks at me. It's clear that he doesn't want me to stay, but he understands."I can't just leave you here," he says."You have to," I say. "They won't come for you the way they'll come for me. The Alpha would never admit you escaped. It would make him look weak. You have a chance at a life.""But what about you?" he asks."I'll be okay," I say, and I wonder if he knows just how much I don't believe that."Go," I say, firmly. "You don't have much time."He stares at me. I can tell he's torn. But he also knows I'm right."Just go," I say. "Before they come looking for you-- before they come looking for me."He hesitates, and then runs out into the forest, disappearing into the trees. The second he is gone, I see the guard coming towards the mouth of the cave. He has an expression on his face that tells me he knows exactly what I've done. And he is furious. "Where is he?" he asks, coming towards me.He is about to hit me when I decide I'm going to have to fight back. The

I turn and am stunned to see Ajax.  He's standing in the distance, watching from the back of the crowd.I look back to the Alpha and I see the confusion on his face.  He doesn't know how Ajax got past the guards.  He doesn't know what he's doing here.I'm overcome with relief at the sight of him.  I can't believe he came back for me.Ajax is walking towards the Alpha and me.  He's taking his time.  The Alpha sees the movement, and then he notices the guards trying to move in on Ajax.I can see the rage building in the Alpha's eyes.  He doesn't know what's going on, but he knows that Ajax is dangerous."Don't you dare hurt him," I scream.  I'm starting to realize what Ajax was planning. The Alpha doesn't listen.  He starts to order the guards to attack Ajax, but before he can, Ajax pounces. He leaps at the Alpha, and the crowd freezes. The Alpha is knocked to the ground, and Ajax stands over him, growling. He bares his fangs, and the Alpha is too shocked to respond. Before h

I am still too wiped out to make it very far, but the sound of a branch breaking has woken me up. My head is pounding, and I feel like I'm hungover, even though I didn't have anything to drink last night.Still, I don't have time to wallow.I am terrified that the guards are going to find me, and I know I can't defend myself against them. I'm not strong enough to take down even one of them, and there's no way I could take on all of them at once. The Alpha was their leader.  They won't hesitate to attack me if they see me.There's a snap of another branch, and I know I have to get away.  I don't know if it's the guards, but I can't stay here.I get up and start running, hoping that I'll be able to outrun whoever it is.I run as fast as I can, but I don't get far. Within seconds, I have lost my footing and fallen into a mud pit.I feel the mud seep into my skin and clothes, and I know this is it. Whoever, or whatever, this is, they're going to find me. I'm stuck here, and there'

MAXI look over to check on her and realize she's in trouble. The guard is on top of her, and he's getting ready to strike.I have to help her. I don't know why, but I feel drawn to her. I feel compelled to keep her safe.I run toward the guard and tackle him.  Before he knows it, the guard is on the ground, and I'm over him, ready to fight.I can hear the other guards yelling and looking for something to use to help.  They see a branch nearby, and I know I'm in trouble.  I look back and see that the other guards have picked up the branch, and they're running toward us.I have to get this guy off of me.  I push him away and jump to my feet. I know I only have a few seconds before the guards get to me, so I move back and get ready for the attack. One of the guards throws the branch, and I bat it away.  I can see the others ready, and I know they're going to all attack at once.  I have to be ready, so I crouch down, and  brace for the attack.I take one guard out before the othe

It's a long walk back to the cabin, and I'm sure Max can see that I'm struggling. I'm so weak that I can barely stand up. I lean against him, and he puts his arm around me to support me."I'm fine," I say."Don't be ridiculous," he says. "You're hurt and you're exhausted. You need to let me help you."I know he's right, so I don't argue.  Instead, I just lean against him. He's warm and strong, and I can feel his heart pounding.  He's a fast walker, and I can tell that he's clearly in shape.  I'm grateful to him for saving me.Without him, I'm sure I would have died.  I try to remind myself that he's not my true mate.  But something inside tells me that he is.  It's too strong to ignore.Something about him calls to me and makes me feel like I can trust him.  I lean against him and take in the smell of his skin. It's rich and earthy, and I can smell the scent of the woods on him. It's just like the musk of a bear.  So strong and manly that I feel weak in the knees.I look up at

VICTORIAI stare at Ajax who is grinning, looking healthier than ever.“How are you alive?”I can barely speak but I manage to garble the words out.He rushes towards me, helping me up, “I never died. When you ran away, Brian’s people gave chase. You gave me those few precious moments to heal and I took over the pack.”I can barely see anymore.I can see him mouthing something.“…ust me?”I don’t know what it is but I nod. Then he’s forcing a bitter liquid into my mouth. I’m too weak to throw it out but as he feeds me the potion, he yanks out the broke piece of spear within me. I scream silently as the agony overtakes me but then I feel the wound healing almost instantly.I go limp in his arms, struggling to breathe as he pats my back, reassuringly, “Just breathe through it. It’ll be over in minutes.”I follow his instructions and sure enough my visions grows clearer. However, the first words out of my mouth are a cry for my mate, “Max!”I yank myself out of Ajax’s hold,

VICTORIA“Impala,” I breathe in horror. “What the hell are you doing here?”I stagger back in shock and fear and Jacklyn smiles, “I brought him here. I mean he was your mate first. So technically you can’t be mated to Max.”“Max is my true mate!” I shout at her. “Impala tried to force himself on me! My mating to Max is valid!”Jacklyn sneers, “Doesn’t matter now, does it? Impala has decided that he wants you back or kill you, depending on how much you resist.”Max is in front of me, his shoulder bleeding but his stance is protective, “She’s not going anywhere with you, you bastard! She’s my mate!”“She was never yours,” Impala spits out. “That bitch was mine and I don’t like mates who run away so she will have to be taught a lesson. You, however, you belong to this big mouthed woman.”“That’s the deal,” Jacklyn smiles. “You take her, I take him.”“Have you gone crazy, Jacklyn?” Max growls.“Crazy?” Jacklyn looks offended. “I love you! I’m doing this for us!”“Victoria is my

VICTORIAIt’s like I’m reliving my worst nightmare as I hear screams of terror, of the people I had grown to love.“What have you done?!” I scream at Jacklyn. She smiles, “I made a deal. A deal to get my mate back.”I try to run past her but she steps in my path, “And just where do you think you’re going?”“You’ve lost your mind!” I hiss at her, terror and adrenaline pumping through my blood. “That is your pack, people you grew up with! You know what happens when another pack invades! They will kill everyone, man, woman, child! They will torture the women, you friends, your family-”“Well they deserve it!” Jacklyn screams suddenly, getting in my face. “They were all complicit in keeping my mate from me!”My breathing is hard as I stare at her, “You’re crazy! You think they will let Max live? You think they’ll keep him alive for you?”“They will,” Jacklyn sneers. “They don’t Max. They want someone else. But don’t worry. They’ve promised to chain Max and bring him to me. Once

I don’t believe it.”However. Max looks unsure.“Let’s wait and see.”Two days later there is still no sign of Jacklyn.“She’s left the pack territory,” One of the group leaders of the search party reports. “We can’t catch her scent anywhere. Wherever she is, its not here. We’ve combed the woods.”Max looks relieved, “Maybe she’s truly left.”However, there is a niggling suspicion in the back of my head. I don’t think Jacklyn would leave. Her obsession with Max goes way beyond that. She tried to kill me twice. She has killed two people.“What about her godfather? Doesn't he know?” I look at Max.“He says he knows nothing,” Max takes

VICTORIA“How could you give me something that belonged to Jackyln?!” I ask Max, tearfully, “You knew what she tried to do to us!”“I thought she had a change of heart!” Max looks just as upset. “I would never have knowingly put you in danger!”“Grace!” I look at the red-eyed woman. “Go tell the Alpha everything.”Grace nods, eager to help and when she disappears, I turn to face Max, “Look.”He looks at my ring and I wince. It’s glowing red.“It is the cursed object.” I say, dread in my voice. “The more I try to pull it off, the tighter it gets.”I give him a frightened look, “Max.”His expression is tight, “Okay. We have two options.”“Waiting for me to take my last breath is too big of a risk. The other option is cutting off my finger.”I hold his gaze, “I prefer the latter option.”However, he shakes his head, “There’s something else we can try. Come on.”He wraps his hand around mine as he begins to drag me along with him.“There’s a jewellery maker in the pack. He

You touched a cursed object some time ago.”I look at my mate who is frozen in place and then I glance at the witch, hope in my voice, “But you can fix it right?”She hesitates, “If it was another witch’s doing, then yes. But this is through some cursed object. There are two ways to undo it. Find the object and destroy it. Or, wait till you are on your last breath and your mate gives you the mating mark. I would suggest the first one. The second one can always go wrong.”My heart sinks and she reaches behind her and stuffs some of the herbs into my hand, “Keep these with you. Chew on a few leaves every twenty four hours and you will be able live. But this solution is temporary. You need to find that object and destroy it.”“Is there any way of tracing it?” Max asks, urgently. “We don’t even know what it is? Maybe if y

And you know that.”He takes a step back, “Jacklyn will come to you soon. Don’t lay a finger on her. Am I clear?”I just stare at him in stony silence, refusing to say anything.I won’t accept her. There is no way in hell!Fortunately, Jacklyn doesn’t seek me out till a few days later. I’m in the hospital at that point when she comes striding through the doors, smiling.“Max-““Get out,” I snarl at her. However, she is undeterred, “Look, I know you’re upset but this is for the best. I understand you better than anyone. And you’re not even mated to her yet. Look, once we mate, it will be-““My mate is there!” I point towards the unconscious Victoria on the bed. “That’s my mate! I know she messed up and she knows it too. But you have to understand, she’s loved you since we were all children. You loved her too.”My heart tightens at the memories.Grace sounds sad, “You were the one who found your true mate, not her Max. You’re happy and in love. Her heart has been crushed. I’m not saying what she did was right but Victoria could have given you two some time to work things out. She immediately rushed you into a mating ceremony-““I was the one who rushed her,” I say, sharply, looking at Grace. “Victoria has suffered a lot. I want to give her some stability. And I did talk to Jacklyn. I explained everything to her and she told me she had no hard feelings. Grace, this happens. Sometimes true mates do appear and you can’t do anything. Jacklyn should understand that.
