"Yes. It's all fine", Keerthi sniffles on the phone, feeling emotional."I miss you mom".
"Don't worry Kitty. You'll get adjusted soon and everything will be fine",Amritha Verma consoles her daughter.
Keerthi sniffs again,"But I don't feel nice".
She was on the verge of bursting out loud, ugly, wailing tears, having missed her mother a little too much.
"It will be fine. How is Vikram? And what about your parents-in-law?",Amritha queries.
"They are all fine", Keerthi mumbles, rubbing her nose.
"Keerthi, you are worrying me",her mother says.
"Nothing like that. I just really miss you. That's all.... Are you okay?"
"Good", Keerthi hears the relief in her mother's voice,"Don't worry about me. I'm fine".
They talk for some more time,Keerthi feeling way too emotional to be considered normal.
She sniffles, wiping her tears as she cuts the call when the door to the room opens.Keerthi quickly wipes away the remaining tears, making her way towards the washroom.
"Why are you crying?",she hears Vikram query as he shuts the door behind him.
Keerthi shakes her head, unwilling to answer him.
"What is it?",Vikram snaps, his voice much closer than earlier, making Keerthi jump.
"Just let me be",she blinks at him.
"Fine. If you are going to continue to cry,go elsewhere",Vikram says, irritated.
He hated crying women. Period. So if his wife was adamant on crying without giving him a reason, he wanted her to do the same out of his sight. Crying women got on his nerves.
Keerthi stares at him in disbelief.
When she doesn't make a move,Vikram sighs, the side of his head starting to throb."Don't cry in front if me. Either tell me why you are crying,so we can solve whatever it is that's made you upset or get out of my sight".
What kind of a person are you?,Keerthi wanted to ask.
Vikram glares at her when fresh tears form in her eyes.He didn't want to appear rude, but he was done for the day. He found it too much dramatic to his liking, dealing with crying women. He had enough experience from his mom, emotional blackmail, for anything and everything.
Keerthi rushes to the washroom, when she sees Vikram's glare intensify.
When she was done,Keerthi peeps out, finding Vikram sitting on the couch next to the bed, working on his laptop. She quietly exits the washroom and goes to the attached balcony, sliding the door shut, not wanting to be in his presence when he had asked her to get out of his room, twice.
Cool breeze hits her face, making Keerthi sigh, sitting on the swing in the middle of the balcony, her legs folded and chin resting on them.
She lets the wind play with her hair,as her mind wanders back to the unpleasant conversation with her husband.
Maybe it really was bad for her .
The higher power above didn't want her to be happy. If Vikram got mad at Keerhi that she cried, she couldn't even imagine the trivial most things he may get mad at.
Keerthi closes her eyes, wanting to enjoy the peace at the moment, nothing but soothing breeze and her, trying to keep her mind blank in the calm of the night.
It wasn't long after that she hears the balcony door open.
When Vikram doesn't hear Keerthi even after a good thirty minutes,he decides to check on her. He sighs. Was he rude,he retrospected. But it was as new to him as it was for Keerthi. He just did not like certain things. But he decided, just this one time,he would go and apologize. She wasn't wrong from her perspective. Keerthi didn't know that he didn't like crying women. So none of them were at fault.
Vikram opens the sliding door as he joins Keerthi.Keerthi strictly keeps her eyes to the front, not acknowledging him,but involuntarily moves to her side, creating distance.
They sit quietly for a moment, neither saying a word. Well, Keerthi didn't have anything to say.Since the swing was just enough for two,his arm brushed hers everytime he ran his hand through his hair.
"I don't like crying women. Something about it puts me off, making me mad",Vikram glances at his wife, her eyes red and puffy from crying."But,of course you don't know that. You should also know that this is going to be my reaction everytime you cry. So it's better for the both of us if you just tell me what's bothering you or not cry in front of me".
Keerthi stared at him in disbelief, again.
Was this guy a psycho? Who gets angry on seeing people cry?
"I am just like that",he shrugs, reading Keerthi's expression."But I didn't mean to be so rude. So just thought I'll let you know how I function".
"You didn't have to be so harsh. I was already upset", Keerthi mutters.
"I know. I shouldn't have",Vikram says softly, regretting his rude behaviour. He should have been gentler,he thinks as he subconsciously reaches out to brush the hair out of her face,"It must already be difficult for you".
At the mention of the topic in hand, Keerthi's eyes watered, turning her head to the other side.
"I..I was just missing my mom",she says, looking down, not willing to make eye contact with him, when she knew his reply will upset her.
Keerthi looks down, trying to blink away her tears, readying herself for harsh reality, but was pleasantly surprised when Vikram opened his mouth.
"Oh",Vikram frowns, glancing at his watch,"It's already late. Do you want to go now?Or can you wait until morning? We can go then. ".
"Really? You would do that?", Keerthi's voice breaks.
"Yeah",he shrugs,"You must be missing your parents.I am not that heartless too".
"Thank you so much", Keerthi give him a genuine smile giving his hand next to her a gentle squeeze.
At that moment, she felt extremely grateful that he had asked her what was wrong, though his style of asking still made her frown.
He glances at their hands, amused, that she was so uncomfortable when their hands barely grazed against each other in the morning, but now was willingly holding his hand.He did not comment about it though, for which Keerthi was very grateful as she quickly withdraws her hand, giving him a small smile.
They sit in silence for some more time, this time a little awkward.
"Come on . Let's go to sleep, it's already late",Vikram says, getting up,"But if you want to sit for some more time, it's up to you,"he shrugs in the end and later frowns,"Actually, don't. Just go to bed.Sleep well. And don't wake me up. Okay?",he ends with a teasing smile.
Keerthi flushed, embarrassed,"I..I didn't do it wantedly".
"Of course you didn't",he humored her,"Don't wake me up early,Okay?",he presses, serious this time though his tone was anything but.
"Fine", Keerthi grumbles, making him laugh.
"We'll go after breakfast. Sounds good?"
"Okay",she grin widely.
He laughs at Keerthi's enthusiasm. "So that's all it takes for my wife to smile huh?Take her to visit her parents?"
Keerthi's grin freezes in place, something uneasy fluttering in her stomach at the mention of him addressing her as 'My wife'.
"Something like that",she manages a smile.
"Goodnight",Vikram wishes,switching off the light.
Keerthi wishes him the same, getting comfortable on her side of the bed.
*************
Bright light hits Keerthi's face, waking her up, making her groan in displease, but later smiles widely at the thought of meeting her mom today.
She quickly gets ready, this time softly, making her chuckle remembering the previous day's incident.
There was a bounce in her step as she went downstairs, extremely happy.
Keerthi exchanges greetings with her mother-in-law, getting to work, though a thought freezes her mind midway .
Would Sakshi object her going home today?
The thought depresses Keerthi, making the smile on her lips falter. She continues her work silently, various scenarios running through her head.
Keerthi looks around for her mobile , frowning when she didn't find it.She makes her way upstairs to the room in search of her phone.
Vikram was messing with his hair, trying to make it look presentable for the day, when he sees Keerthi enter their room.He hums to himself, busy with his work, glancing at her every now and then through the mirror. He gives a puzzled frown though, when he sees Keerthi snatch away her mobile angrily, with unnecessary aggravation, while she gives him a hard glare one last time and shuts the door behind her, walking out.
Keerthi's thoughts disturbed her to no end.Is that why Vikram said he would take Keerthi to meet her mom? Because he knew Sakshi wouldn't give permission. Just to portray himself as the good guy because he had offered? And later blame it on someone else.
The thought made her sadder than expected, and annoyed. Very annoyed.
Vikram didn't understand his wife, she was too complex, never speaking her mind. She was too passive aggressive for him to deal with, making it even more harder. Granted, they have been married for only a day or two and didn't really have a single decent conversation, but he could draw the judgement that his wife would be a really hard woman to please and live with. Various thoughts ran in his mind, but he let them be for the moment as he made his way downstairs.
"Why are you dressed up?Are you going somewhere?",Vikram hears his mother ask.
Vinod and Vihan glance at him, going back to their breakfasts as Keerthi holds her breath, like it was a life or death situation.
"Yeah",Vikram says, munching on his breakfast,"Me and Keerthi are going to meet her parents".
"Okay",Keerthi saw her mother in law smile "Make sure you take something. Don't go empty handed,Okay?".
That was easy.
"Of course mom",Vikram rolls his eyes, sipping in his coffee.
Vikram was studying his wife, who seemed to be in a different mood altogether now.How could she switch so easily,he wondered. He frowned, thinking about what might have happened.
Vikram wasn't one to dig other's feelings and emotions. But since he was going to spend the next hour or three with Keerthi,he preferred it if she was in a better mood, for both of their sake.As he saw his wife answering his father's questions,he wondered silently if she thought he had forgotten that they had to go to her parent's place.
The thought irritated Vikram. He was a man of his word. His wife was clearly judgemental if she had thought that.
Vikram wasn't a hypocrite,he too judged people. But he made sure not to act upon it too quickly. He would take his time analysing people. But his recent interactions with Keerthi forced him to come to a quick judgement. He shook his head, clearing his thoughts.
Keerthi resisted the urge to squeal, bouncing in happiness as she wears her seat belt, humming a happy tune, a little extra, she knew, but she was too happy.
Vikram glances at her amused,as he reverses the car.
"You expected me to ditch, didn't you?", Vikram queries.
Keerthi stared at him, how did he know?
"You are very observant",she say after a few moments.
"You are very expressive", he shrugs. So he was right, afterall.
"Yes, I did",Keerthi answers his question.
Vikram grins,"I don't know whether to be amused or offended due to your lack of faith".
Definitely not both,Vikram was neither amused nor offended. He was slightly irritated,if he may say so.But maybe, she was surrounded by people who didn't stand on their words,Vikram thought.
"Well, you don't particularly look offended",Keerthi grins, trying to appear cool, but freaks out internally.
He throws her a glance,his internal monologue forgotten"Don't I?"
"You don't",Keerthi confirms, grinning at him,her grin widening when they enter the familiar gates of her house.
They wait outside the door, Keerthi ringing the bell one too many times, making Vikram give her an amused glance.
"Mom!!!!I missed you so much",Keerthi screeches into a startled Amritha's ear, not giving her a chance to respond as she pull her mother into a bear hug.
"Kitty, what a pleasant surprise", Amritha hugs her daughter a little tighter,as she gives her son in law a smile, greeting him when the mother-daughter duo pull away.
"Come on", Keerthi drags Vikram inside.
"You look high", he whispers.
"I feel high", Keerthi says, making him shake his head at her antiques. His wife was cute,Vikram thought.
Vikram politely offers the sweets to Amritha that they got on the way and settles comfortably on the couch.
Keerthi and her mother chat animatedly, like they hadn't met in months.Amritha was secretly happy her daughter decided to come right when her husband was not home. She didn't want Vikram to witness the ugly happenings in the house,at least not on the second day of her daughter's married life.
Amritha disappears into the kitchen, getting them something to eat.
"Thanks",Keerthi smiles,as she turns towards Vikram
"You are welcome", he gives her a smile.
The whole time they had lunch, Keerhi just couldn't say in words how much she missed her mother, feeling extremely grateful to Vikram that he brought her.
Vikram was bored, having his food silently,as he watched Keerthi and Amritha speak, giving his inputs when needed. He was ready to get of there, having sat through enough awkwardness, but he couldn't bring himself to ask Keerthi to leave, how much ever he wanted to. His wife just looked so happy.
"You are just awesome",Keerthi gushes as they make way towards Vikram's car, having said goodbyes to Amritha, after a long, long time.Keerthi was reluctant.
But she knew ,she had to leave.
"I know", Vikram teases her as they start.
Keerthi mindlessly stares out of the window, her mood a bit dim, but happy altogether
She jerks forward, placing her hand on the dashboard to balance myself when the car abruptly comes to a halt.
Had they reached already?She thought
Keerthi glanced at her surroundings.Nothing specific.
"Are you coming out or not?",Vikram asks, impatient.
"Why are we here?",Keerthi asks, her eyes lighting up in recognition when she follows his line of vision.
Corner Stone.
"Let's go",Vikram says,in a mood to have some dessert.
Keerthi nods,skipping beside him.
They chat for some time as they eat their respective ice creams, conversation coming to a halt after some time when they felt awkward and ran out of topics.
That night,Keerthi had slept with a smile on her face,Maybe, just maybe, life won't be all that bad.
Vikram lets warm water cascade his back, silently enjoying his shower as he hums to himself. He leans over the shower head letting water fall onto his hair, washing it as he contemplated recent events. He particularly didn't have an opinion on his wife. The thought disturbed him. Was it even normal to beneutralabout someone's own wife? Probably not,he thought. But he was not exactly at fault. His wife had showed multiple moods in the past few days. He had found her too cute, adorable if he may say so,at times. But there were also times when he was just so irritated with her, merely controlling the urge to snap at her. She wouldn't speak her mind, coming to random conclusions. Vikram found it difficult to cope with her. All his life,he was surrounded by people who
"But it's really okay Mom", Keerthi tries convincing her mother in law. "No beta. It's better you go. It's kind of a ritual. A small function will be held and there will be guests coming to bless your married life",Sakshi says "But I already have a lot of new clothes , from the wedding shopping. I can just wear one of those", Keerthi says. "Keerthi", Sakshi patiently explains,"It's a tradition that the bride wears the clothes given to her by her in laws. You and Vikram go for shopping , okay?" "Okay", Keerthi relents. "Good", Sakshi pats Keerthi's cheek, giving her a warm smile and leaves. It was unknown to the
"Good you came on time. Go and freshen up. We'll have dinner",Sakshi said as she saw Vikram and Keerthi entering. Vikram didn't know a diplomatic way to answer his mom. He could say he ate,but that would raise questions as to why Keerthi didn't eat. He didn't want to put their personal life on show.He was thinking of what to say when Keerthi spoke. "We already ate outside Mom",Keerthi answered on their behalf, making Vikram feel even more bad. "Okay",Sakshi smiles. "Did you get your clothes?",Vihan asked to which they nodded. "Did you get something for me as well?",Vihan teased his brother. "Get married. You can
Keerthi visibly freezes in Vikram's arms. "Wh..What?", She whispers, desperately hoping to have heard differently. Vikram gives her a pointed stare, willing her to answer. Keerthi trembles, not knowing what to say. She knew men. It would be a jab to Vikram's ego if she responded in negative. And she didn't know what he was capable of, the thought worrying her. Though he seemed nice half the time and hadn't misbehaved with her, she didn't know if she could voice out her opinion. She didn't know what he would do to her. More tears leaked her cheeks, terrified. Vikram was confused. Why was his wife crying as he had told her that someone had died? He didn't particularl
Keerthi stood in the same place, tears streaming down her face at an alarming rate. She was scared. She waited for Vikram to say something, anything. A part of her was relieved though, that she expressed her biggest fear to him. She hoped and prayed her husband understood her and wasn't physically abusive. Though Keerthi cherished silence, she badly wanted to hear something,aYes I understandor even a ,How dare you say something like that followed by a slap. But she was positive she was deaf when Vikram opened his mouth. "Here. Drink your milk", Vikram offered her the glass of milk. Keerthi was confused, though this time she accepted
"Do you want some coffee?" Vikram looked up from the newspaper he was reading to see his wife standing awkwardly in front of him. "Yeah. Please",he answered distractedly, busy reading the sports column. "Okay",Keerthi muttered as she made way into the Kitchen. She saw her father-in -law enter just as she was passing by. Though she was reluctant, Keerthi found it necessary to ask him too if he wanted coffee, out of courtesy. Vinod smiled at Keerthi,"No Keerthi,I don't drink coffee. Acid problems", he chuckled, making Keerthi smile too. "Oh. Okay",Keerthi gave her father in law a small smile as he patted her head and joined her h
Vikram walked out of the washroom, contemplating on changing in the room instead of his closet. But on second thought,he dressed up in the closet, not wanting his wife to think he was upto something. He was not. He just didn't like wearing his clothes in the closet. Vikram wore a pastel blue Sherwani with a golden border. His hair gelled and beard trimmed. He walked into his room to see his wife stuck to the dressing table, clasping a chain around her neck. He hummed to himself as he picked his phone and walked out of the room, wanting to give Keerthi some time and privacy to get ready. Keerthi adorned her wrists with bangles,co
Vikram woke up to find his wife towel drying her hair. How she managed to look so pretty when she wasdryingher hair,he didn't know. He was puzzled at the direction of his thoughts when he just woke up. He averted his gaze though, clenching his jaw, when he recollected the previous day's events. "What?", Keerthi barked, thinking he was looking at her,but in reality Vikram was looking behind her, after he everted his gaze. "What?",Vikram raised an eyebrow. Keerthi gave him a blank look. "Look,I just woke up. Take your new drama elsewhere." Keerthi gaped at Vikram, his bluntness quickly raising her temper.
Vikram's POV(In Mumbai)I return home after an exhausting day to see my wife sound asleep on the couch. I shake my head, rolling my eyes. I had mentioned I would be late and specifically asked her to go to bed.The last time she fell asleep on the couch, she had a strained neck for three days, and she has a bad cold.I swallow back my irritation, taking gentle steps to check on my children before I freshened up.My lips tilt up automatically, relaxation coursing through my veins as I see my flesh sleeping peacefully. The father in me couldn't resist as I tip-toed into their room, placing a kiss on my seven year and four year olds' foreheads."Go to sleep Rahil",I murmured when I saw him move in his sleep, patting his chest. He was always a light sleeper.I glance at my daughter, smiling when I see her lower lip jutted out,her hands over her head as she slept beautifully. Aarna hates being touched in her sleep.I gently shut the door, making way to my room."When did you come home?",I hea
Vikram's POVIt was one of those days. When everything was great, grateful for all the good things in life. Living life looked simple, easy. I didn't realise I was lost in my thoughts, jumping from one to another when the flow was interrupted.I sweep a glance towards my wife, our coffee mugs in her hands."Why are you smiling?" ,She asks, handing me my mug.I shrug, pulling her gently into my lap, taking care the coffee didn't spill. I either had to clean it or put up with an earful I could do without. She only smiled shyly, closing her eyes when the side of her thigh grazed my penis.I gave her an amused smile, shaking my head. I couldn't deny,I liked it. A lot.I clear my throat,my hand inching into her top,as I place it there, ignoring her look as I sip on my coffee."It's 11 in the morning", Keerthi teased."So?",My hand travels higher, unclasping her bra."At least let me finish my coffee",my wife laughs, shaking her head.I let out a laugh too, squeezing her hip.She gives me a sof
"You kick me one more time, and I'm not going to feed you",Keerthi snapped at the six month old on her lap.The grinning crying/screaming copy of Vikram only let out gurgles of laughter, having his feed in the meantime, kicking his mother's tummy.Keerthi winced when she felt a sharp jab on her lower abdomen, tears pricking her eyes at the pain. She cupped her tummy, placing Rahil on the bed next to her. Even though she got her stitches removed a few months back,it still hurt when her son kicked too hard.It took her three minutes for the pain to become a dull throb. She glared at the about-to-wail child."You scream one more time, that's it. I'm giving you to your grandparents.""Stop being dramatic Keerthi", Keerthi heard her husband,as he entered their room, locking the door shut."You are twenty minutes late.""Wow. You learnt the art of checking time.""No need for that much sarcasm", Keerthi mumbled, placing Rahil in his crib, murmuring,"Please don't cry",in his ear.Keerthi felt he
Two anniversaries later...Keerthi stared at the plastic item in her hand, clutching it against her chest, not bothering that it was dirty. Tears blurred her vision,as she held the edge of the sink. She had mixed feelings. Although she was thrilled, she felt nervous. What would Vikram say if she told him she was pregnant? She didn't think she had the guts to look him in the eye and tell him that she was pregnant. The thought made her too nervous. Although she was positive Vikram might be happy, she couldn't rule out the possibility of him not taking it well. She tried to calm her racing heart, the nervousness not allowing her to be happy about the most precious moment in her life. She was going to be a mother. So why couldn't she be happy? She deep down knew it was because she wanted to share the news with her better half.Maybe she could just leave the stick on the sink, and Vikram would accidentally see it and question her himself? She shut her eyes, tempted at the possibility, jumping in
Keerthi glared at her husband."Help me stock up the fridge if you want any food.""Are you hungry?""Why?"Vikram shrugged, helping his wife as she set their fridge."Vikram", Keerthi scolded when her husband hugged her from behind after they were done."Sweetheart?Stop shouting",he kissed his wife's neck, pulling the thin strap of her shoulder down."You are not even helping me. And you are disturbing me on top of that."Vikram shook his head,"Nobody asked you to do everything in a single day. Hire someone or something.""For what? Arranging our clothes and inner wear?", Keerthi barked.Vikram walked to his wife, picking her in his arms, ignoring her shrieks of protest as he shut the door."Vikram.""Shut up Keerthi. I've ordered a pizza. We'll have our dinner, and then continue arranging things. You are such a pain when you are hungry.""I am a pain to you all the time.""Good God woman", Vikram sighed, folding his wife in his lap,"I love you, darling.""I love you too. When is the pizz
Vikram frowned when he saw his wife in her formals when he came back home."Are you going somewhere?"Keerthi was startled,"Hi",she gave her husband a kiss."Hi.""Yeah. Going to Mom's.""Oh.Want me to drop?""Nah. I'll drive myself.""But-""I'm fine Vikram. My injuries are completely healed.""Alright",Vikram pulled his wife to him, kissing her neck."Return quickly? I've missed you",Vikram cupped his wife's breast.Keerthi pressed her lips thin,"I plan to stay there for a week or so.""Oh. Any particular reason?""We are shifting next week. So want to spend some time", Keerthi shrugged, hoping her husband understood."Cool", Vikram shrugged,"I'll drop you in that case."Keerthi stared at her husband. He agreed so easily? Wow."Why are you looking at me like that?""Just", Keerthi shrugged,"You are so different",she hugged her husband."Okay? Is something wrong?"Keerthi shook her head,"Didn't expect you to agree so easily.""Why should I agree even? You are going to your parents' pla
Amritha Verma was pleasantly surprised when she saw her daughter and son in law at her doorstep. She expected her daughter to be busy, since she hadn't attended to her calls. She smiled when her daughter threw her arms around her."Happy birthday",she kissed her daughter's head.Keerthi's eyes watered unexpectedly. She swallowed the lump in her throat, smiling through tears,"Thanks Ma."Keerthi pulled her husband inside with her,"Hi dad.""Keerthi",Arvind Verma returned his daughter's hug,"What a pleasant surprise",he kissed her head,"Happy birthday.""Thanks dad",she smiled.Arvind Verma shook hands with his son in law, inviting him into their house.Vikram smiled politely, taking a seat.Keerthi squeezed her husband's hand, leaving him with her father as she accompanied her mother into the kitchen.Keerthi winced when she jumped on to the kitchen counter."What happened?"Amritha frowned.Keerthi played innocent,"What happened?"Amritha walked to her daughter,"Do you have to tell me a
"No. Go away", Keerthi grumbled when someone shook her."Ouch",she glared at her husband when he bit her lip."I want to sleep Vikram",she turned to the other side.Keerthi screeched in frustration when he kept poking her,"What?""Take your medicines. You can sleep after that.""I literally just closed me eyes", Keerthi grumbled, sitting up, blinking her eyes as she came face to face with her husband in their bedroom.Vikram laughed,"It's after two in the noon.""What?", Keerthi shrieked,"Half of my birthday is gone."Vikram laughed,"Get up. You can eat something."Keerthi sat up,relieved that her pain came down a bit, though it still throbbed a bit.She felt sad when she glanced at her mobile, her mother's missed call staring at her.She missed her parents."Yeah",she cleared her throat.Vikram glanced at his wife, giving her a kiss on her mouth,"Happy birthday, Love."Keerthi was surprised at the endearment, her insides warming,"Thank you",she placed a kiss on her husband's lips, wincing
"Does it hurt too much?"Rhetorical question. Keerthi would get scolded either way,she knew it."Um.""Go to sleep. Maybe it'll be better in the morning.""Yeah.Ouch", Keerthi cried when she put some pressure on her hips.Vikram swallowed,"I think we should go to the hospital."Keerthi's side throbbed in pain, tears welling her eyes. Did she really break something?"It's fine", Keerthi said hesitantly. She wasn't sure anymore. A simple bruise didn't hurt that much, surely."Come on",Vikram picked his wife in his arms.Keerthi smiled when her husband took her hand in his, kissing the back of it and released it,as he shifted the gear."There was really no need",Keerthi rolled her eyes when they were in the hospital premises."Nothing wrong in confirming",Vikram shrugged, parking the car."Sure", Keerthi mumbled under her breath."Why are you flinching repeatedly then?",Vikram quirked a brow, when his wife joined him.Keerthi gave her husband a flat look,"I have fun. That's why.""You can ha
