Chapter 18

ELENA's POV:

"I believe there is no need for your explanation, Miss Dixons," said Robert, his voice carrying a gravitas that displayed his professionalism.

"B-but...I... he...," I stammered, trying to find words to defend Oswin. However, Robert's aura was intimidating, making me unable to form proper sentences. Gosh! I couldn't even maintain eye contact with him. Was this the aura of all lawyers?

As I looked to the floor, my eyes fixated on his black cap-toe oxfords. All sorts of worries filled my head. I didn't want Oswin to go to the police or court. The risks were high, and the consequences were severe. His identity would be exposed, and things would get complicated. Additionally, it would also mean that James would find out the truth. I knew I was wrong for lying to him in the first place; still, I planned to tell him everything once the time was right.

But that time was definitely not now.

So, the question was... what should I say to save the situation?
