Ellie

"Something is not right," Ellie said, leaning over to her father.

"What are you talking about?" Michael asked, still cheering along with much of the crowd at the huge toss Blade just made. "That was a throw if I've ever seen one."

"Yeah, it sure was," she agreed. "A throw that doesn't match his other throws. And… he's acting weird."

Michael gave her a questioning look and then shook his head. "Honey, I know he's not your favorite, but if he wins, he wins. You agreed to this, remember? You're the one who didn't want the Moon Goddess to choose or to pick for yourself. There can be no whining now if things don't turn out the way that you wanted them to."

"Whining?" Ellie repeated, her eyes wide. She knew the tone her dad was using. It was that, "I want you to think I might just be playing, but I'm honestly upset at you," tone that he often used when he disapproved of what she did or said but didn't want to pick a fight. Normally, she'd just roll her eyes and go on. But this was dif

River'That bastard beat me.' River sat outside on the back porch of the cabin he was staying in, looking out at the woods, sipping a beer, trying to figure out how in the world Blade managed to beat him. There had to be something to whatever he was doing with his pocket, but River couldn't prove anything, and Beta Andrew claimed he'd examined everything carefully before, during, and after the event, and found nothing. So… all he could do was try to do better in the next event, which would be held the day after next. It was a race, and River knew he was fast. So long as Blade didn't find a way to cheat, he could win. If that was the case, he would at least be tied with Blade for first place going into the fights. It would take a lot for someone to beat River in a hand-to-hand fight. Blade would absolutely have to cheat in order to pull that off.Finishing off his beer, he decided to go for a stroll through the woods. As much as he wanted to let his wolf run and burn off some of this a

EllieThe irritation that Ellie was feeling from the moment Blade won the contest was starting to dissipate a little since she'd had her discussion with River. She hadn't gone out into the woods to look for him specifically, but when she'd seen him out there, she'd known she had to speak to him. He was so easy to talk to, and those eyes… she could get lost in those for hours. She'd never thought that she'd be cheering for anyone in particular to win this contest, but now, she was having second thoughts.Hosting this many people was taking a toll on her. She wasn't that much of a social butterfly anyway, and already, she was beginning to feel a little drained. As far as she knew, her father didn't have anything planned for that night, so at least she could go home and decompress for a while. Then, maybe she could get some work done.Ellie walked into her house and kicked her shoes off by the door, glad not to hear a ton of voices coming from the living room. She did hear her father tal

RiverDances really weren't his thing. In fact, as River got ready to go over to the main auditorium in the village where the ball was being held, he had serious thoughts of ducking out. He could have his mom tell everyone something important had come up, that he'd had to manage some work. No one would doubt that. Alphas were busy people, after all, and no one would understand that more than Ellie. But he knew he couldn't do that because even if he didn't want to go to the dance, he wanted to see her.The talk they'd had earlier in the woods had been short, and they hadn't talked about too many deep subjects, but he'd enjoyed getting to know her a little better. She was a fascinating woman, and unlike a lot of the girls he'd known over the years, she was interested in more than talking about herself and trying to impress him. In fact, she asked all sorts of interesting questions, he'd noticed, whenever he'd been around her, and she was just the sort of person he could find himself get

EllieNot wanting to go to the dance had been an understatement. But Ellie had managed to get herself together, with Shelby's help. Her best friend had even secretly bought her a new, beautiful dress. The silver was perfect for this 'not a Moon Goddess ball' dance, and she loved the shape of it. Standing in front of the mirror, looking at herself, she couldn't help but think she felt her mother looking down on her, especially when she read that message she'd hung above the mirror so long ago. "Lead with kindness. Lead with Grace. Always wear a friendly smile on your face." Her mom had to be smiling down on her now for sure.Shelby had run off to meet Carl, leaving Ellie to walk to the dance on her own, which was fine. She wanted to take her time and enjoy the crisp autumn air. But then she'd seen River and Patricia ahead of her and had been more excited than ever to go to the dance. He looked incredible in his suit, and the way he was escorting his mother touched her heart. He wasn't

Ellie"Hello, Luna Ellie," Blade said, taking a few steps closer to her. He was wearing a white suit jacket, a black bow tie, and black suit pants. He was a good looking man. There was no question about that. It was his personality that made her sick to her stomach. It wasn't just that he was full of himself. Most of the men in leadership positions Ellie knew had suffered from that affliction at least a little bit. It was the entitlement that bothered her. He not only thought he was better than everyone else, he felt like everyone else owed him something just because he was Blade."Why are you standing outside?" she asked as he came over to her, still standing in front of her.Blade shrugged. "I guess I just didn't need to see the River show, that's all."Ellie inhaled deeply, held it, and slowly let it out. How ironic that the biggest showman of them all was annoyed at River. "Well, it's over now," she said, assuming he meant the fact that she had been dancing with Rive."You do reme

RiverAnother slow song started to play, and River found himself looking around for Ellie again. It seemed like she'd disappeared a long time ago. Where had she gone? He hoped she was okay. Maybe dancing with her so early on in the night had been a mistake. He'd been so tempted to kiss her, but then she'd taken off, and he hadn't seen her since. Had he pushed too hard too fast?"Do you want to dance again?" Jasmine asked, already swaying in time to the music. She was Ulysses's cousin, and while she was beautiful and sweet, she was only seventeen. The first thing she'd said to him when she'd asked him to dance was, "Don't worry--I know you like Ellie. But I'm bored. Do you wanna dance?"How could he say no to that? They'd spun around the dance floor for a while, but River found himself constantly checking to see if Ellie had come back in. Now, he still didn't see her anywhere, and he was beginning to get worried."She's over there, in the corner," Jasmine said, stepping up next to him

EllieNot being able to sleep was something she should've been getting used to. After several days of lying awake most of the night, this one was no different. Every time she'd start to doze off, she'd remember what it felt like to be held so tightly in River's arms. She'd think about Blade and how revolting he was. She'd worry about the contest the next day. What was she going to do if Blade one again? River had to win the race. He just had to.Finally, around 5:00 in the morning, she got up and headed for the kitchen, thinking it was going to be a multiple coffee sort of day. The race was supposed to start at 8:00. It was a long race, almost a marathon. The course wound its way through much of her territory, and her father wanted to give the contestants time to complete it before the sun was overhead since he thought that would make it hotter, despite the fact that it was fall, and drastic temperatures didn't affect them the way that humans were affected by them. Still, Michael had

RiverPreparing for a foot race wasn't something a person could do overnight. River realized all those months of running and taking care of his body would contribute to his victory--if he should be lucky enough to win today. He had to hope that he could. If Blade won again today, he'd basically have the tournament in the bag.Not only did River need to win, he needed Blade to come in toward the end of the pack. Otherwise, the next contest would be the deciding factor, and River didn't want to take the chance of knowing he had to win two contests in a row just to keep Blade from being proclaimed the winner. Not that River didn't want to win both contests so he could win Ellie's hand. That was the ultimate prize. But putting some distance between himself and Blade would be ideal. The walk to the spot where the race would start wasn't too long, but River took his time, hoping to spend the time alone so he could reflect on what he wanted to do that day so that he was certain to have his b

EllieThe string quartet was playing a soft, slow song that seemed to make the silver stars above them twinkle even more somehow as Ellie stood admiring the scene. She'd been right. Everything had come together perfectly, and all across the dance floor, couple after couple had paired off. Her students were finding their fated mates. Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide were coming together with women that had trained in her school."Well, what do you think, beautiful?" River asked, stepping over from where he'd been speaking to another Alpha who'd come with his wife and son, who was their age and looking for a wife so he could take over the pack. "I would say this is a huge success.""Definitely," Ellie agreed. "I see so many people dancing together and falling in love.""I know," River said. "Look at Sarah and Alpha Rob over there. And Nelly and Alpha Lance."Ellie had noticed both of those couples. Sarah looked so lovely in her red dress, and Nelly in her blue one, gazing into L

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 149: Finishing Touches

EllieThe final touches for the Moon Goddess Ball were falling into place, and Ellie couldn't believe how beautiful the event center looked. As she looked around at all of the decorations, her heart fluttered in her chest. She could only imagine how many couples might fall in love in there tonight. It hadn't been easy, getting everything ready for the event, but along with Michael, River, Shelby, and several other volunteers, Ellie had gotten it done. Not only had they put together a beautiful event center, but they'd also managed to get several Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide to commit to attending, and for the past several days, they'd been arriving. Many of them were staying in the cabins in the pack village, the same ones that the Alphas who had competed in her contest had stayed in.Ellie pushed those thoughts out of her mind. It all seemed like ancient history now. The bachelors remaining from that contest would be back that night, still looking for love, though there w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 148: Plans

EllieThe idea of having a Moon Goddess Ball with the women she'd been training to become Lunas was ultimately the idea behind the training to begin with, so when River came in and suggested that they have the grand opening of the new event center be just that, a Moon Goddess Ball for the women in her class, Ellie couldn't believe her ears."Do you think that's a good idea?" River asked her."No, I don't think that's a good idea," Ellie told him, watching his face fall."You don't?" River blinked a few times. It was clear he was searching for something to say that wouldn't offend her."No. I think… it's a great idea," she said, winking at him.A smile broke across his face, wide enough to match her own. "Oh, he said. Good. I was afraid you were going to tell me that it was a bad idea.""No, I definitely think we should do that," she said. "In fact, I think we should start planning it right now. When is the full moon?"River pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the calendar.

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 147: The Event Center

River Rebuilding after the fire wasn't easy, but it was something that brought the entire pack together. In a way, River was slightly glad, though he'd never say it out loud. Supervising the project while Michael recovered from his injuries was interesting. River invited some of the members of his own pack to come over and help. At first, it seemed like there was a bit of a divide between the two groups, but once the "outsiders" proved their value, everyone began to work smoothly together. It took quite a while to clear away the debris from the old event center. After that, they planned a new one. This one was better. It was bigger with more rooms for different events. River had the pack architect draw it out with input from several of the pack elders and other important members of the pack, including Michael, who was out of the hospital by then and staying with Ellie and River so that the pack Luna could spend as much time as possible with her dad. River knew it had really shaken El

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 146: Michael's Love

EllieIt took a few days before Michael was able to come out of the coma, but part of that was because the healers thought it would help him heal if they kept him in a medically induced coma, so by the time he finally opened his eyes three days after the attack, Ellie was thrilled. She was also exhausted, but seeing her father's eyes register on her own made all of that fade away momentarily. "Dad?" she said, looking at his familiar face. "How are you feeling?""Ellie?" he said, his voice weak. He still had an oxygen mask over his face, but all of the tubes and other wires had been removed, other than the monitor hooked up to his finger and the IV he had in his arm in case he needed more medicine. "Where's Michaela?""She's at home with River," Ellie said, giving him a reassuring smile. She wasn't sure how much of the battle he would remember. "She's perfectly fine."Her father's head rolled to the side a bit as he released a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank the Moon Goddess," he said. "I w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 145: A Night in the Healing Center

Ellie Watching the healers work to bring her father back from the dead was like watching a dream for Ellie. She stood there with Michaela in her arms, River's hand on her shoulder, thinking none of this could be happening, that it had to be a dream. But it wasn't. It was real. Her daughter had really been ripped from her bed, and now, the same people who were responsible for taking her child from her may have succeeded in taking her dad.Ellie couldn't imagine what her life would be like without her father in it. For as long as she could remember, he'd been there for her. Like a rock, like the brick wall she needed to hold her up anytime she felt like she couldn't stand on her own, he was always there. Even though she had River now, it wasn't the same. No matter how old a person got, they always needed a parent. But if Michael died, she wouldn't have any parents at all. She'd be an orphan. While she could imagine that her father would be happy to finally be reunited with her mother,

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 144: Alpha Emergency

RiverSeeing Ellie fighting all of those rogues by herself was enough to make River kick himself into a gear he didn't even know that he had. But when he saw his wife carrying his daughter away to safety, he knew that everything was going to be all right, especially since the rogues were grossly outnumbered. There was just the matter of making them pay for the horrendous atrocities they had committed. Not only had they set the village event center on fire, which may have already spread to other buildings, but they'd also violated his home, stolen his daughter, and taken her off in the middle of the night.None of these wolves were walking away from this fight. Not even the huge male that was bearing down on him now.River didn't care that the male seemed to be twice his size. With the anger boiling inside of him from everything he'd seen, River lowered himself to the ground and waited for the wolf to come at him. When the large wolf's teeth snapped at him, River dodged to the side and

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 143: Saving Michaela

EllieThe fact that she'd jumped right over the Omega's head would buy her some time, but only a matter of seconds. He would turn around and be right after her. So… Ellie had to make those moments count. She needed to head right for the female holding her baby and attack before she had the chance to register what was happening.Ellie landed hard on the ground from her leap and ignored the searing pain that shot up her right front paw. She continued to run, registering the look of fear in the female's eyes. It was only there for a split second, but it was there long enough for Ellie to know that she had the upper hand. She aimed low, darting around for the back of the female, away from her baby. She managed to sink her teeth into the female's leg, causing her to yelp. When she did so, she had to let go of the baby blanket. Michaela tumbled to the ground, but it wasn't much of a drop. Still, the baby screamed in fear and possibly a bit of pain. Ellie considered her chances of grabbing h

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 142: Closing In

RiverLeaving the fire to run out into the night, searching for his daughter was enough to make River's heart catch in his throat. How was it possible that someone had taken his baby from her warm bed in the middle of the night? As he tore through the forest, running in the direction his wife told him she was tracking the culprits in, he tried not to think about the fact that he'd been suspecting something like this in the back of his mind for some time. Ever since the rogues started getting close to the village, he'd been wondering if they'd try a stunt like this. If he'd been able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, if he'd thought it was truly possible that they'd try to take his daughter, he would've been more vigilant. Now, he was running as fast as he could, praying that Ellie or someone else saw them soon.If they found them, they would stop them. They just had to find them."River! I see them!"Ellie's voice in his head gave him hope. River's breath stuttered. "Where?" h
