Ellie

Introducing River to the other Alphas should've been no big deal, but Shelby's comments stuck in Ellie's mind as she entered her home, River behind her, and she couldn't help but dwell on them. All of the Alphas were handsome, there was no doubt that there was something special about River. He was better looking than the others. He was polite and not completely full of himself, like most of the others, and he was kind. He'd even brought her a plant. Granted, that was from his mother, apparently, but it was still nice of him.

She walked into the room, and all eyes seemed to be on her. "Ellie! There you are!" Strand purred from across the room. "We missed you!"

"Sorry," she said, feeling more than a little awkward. "Stand, do you know River? Alpha of the Howling Moon Pack?"

"River! Nice to see you." Strand shook his hand, and as the two of them exchanged pleasantries, the rest of the Alphas came to meet the newest arrival.

It was clear that many of the Alphas either had already me

RiverA group of the Alphas strolled to their rooms together after the get-together at Ellie's house. Even though River's car was still sitting a few steps away outside of Ellie's office, he decided to walk along with the others to get to know them better. While he hadn't necessarily come there to make friends, it wouldn't hurt to strengthen his alliances if he could. Nor did it hurt to sum up the competition. At first, he'd wanted to win the contest simply because he hated to lose, but having just spent the evening in Ellie's presence, his reasons for winning were a bit different now.It took a lot to get a wolf shifter drunk, but a couple of the guys were borderline tipsy, at least. Blade wasn't with them, as he'd arranged for one of his Omegas to come and pick him up and drive him the quarter mile to his quarters, which seemed ridiculous, but the rest of them were walking together. With one exception, this group seemed pretty decent to River, like they could be friends. That except

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 14: Dinner

Ellie"Is it just me, or does this broccoli look like little trees?" Cane asked, sitting to Ellie's right at the big dinner her father was holding the night before the tournament was to begin. Ellie had said the only way she would agree to this meal was if her three little brothers, Shelby, and Carl were also invited, and her father had reluctantly given in. The Alphas were each allowed to bring one guest as well, which meant for quite a crowded table. Michael had had to string a few tables together so that they all fit, and the monstrosity stretched from the dining room into the living room of their home. Ellie was pretty sure some of the Alpha's mothers, which had come along as moral support, thought the set-up was ridiculous, but she didn't care. Her dad was doing his best, and that's all that counted."Stop playing with your food," Ellie said, leaning closer to him. "You're not five.""Stop kicking me under the table," Cane whispered back. "You're not five.""I'm not kicking you

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 15: Stroll With a Friend

Ellie"Is this your idea of a run?" Ellie joked as she strolled alongside Ulysses through the forest in the early dawn. The sun was just coming up, and it was beautiful seeing the colors of the sky reflected off the glossy services of the autumn leaves."No, no it is not," Ulysses said. They were walking at a pretty fast pace, but they definitely weren't running. "If I were running, my knees would be bent, Ellie."His remark made her laugh. It was nice, hearing him say her name like that, as if they were old friends. While she appreciated the friends she had, her "little brothers" were a bit immature sometimes, and any more, all Shelby wanted to talk about was Carl. Talking to Ulysses was refreshing, even if her lungs weren't quite burning from this particular workout, and she didn't even feel like she'd need to stretch when she was done."So… what made you decide to come to this crazy tournament?" Ellie asked as they started a fairly steep incline where they'd get a great view of the

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 16: Jealousy

RiverKnowing that Ellie was going out on a run with Ulysses that morning didn't make it any easier to watch her step out of the woods alongside the handsome Alpha. River was at the tournament grounds, bright and early, preparing for the first event of the competition. Trying to keep his mind off of the woman who was hosting the contest and actually prepare for it was more difficult than he ever would've thought possible when he first let his mother talk him into this. Now, watching the tall blonde woman gracefully walk across the clearing next to another man made his muscles tighten and his eyes narrow. He had to look away.It was great motivation, though. Winning was always a driving force for River, no matter what the game was about. Whether he was playing cards with his packmates, participating in a team video game, or shooting hoops with his Beta, he wanted to be the best. He wanted to win. This tournament was no different. He would want to win even if there was nothing to be had

Ellie"How are you, sunshine?" Her dad called as she met up with him in the clearing where the first contest would be held. He was bursting with excitement as he wrapped his arm around her neck. "Can you believe it's finally here?""Everything looks great, Dad," she said, hugging him back. It was clear he was proud of what he'd put together, and he'd done a nice job. The stands were packed with people ready to watch the first event, the log toss, as he father had been calling it. Many of the audience members were from her own pack, but she saw familiar faces from the guests' packs as well. River's mother's face caught her attention. Ellie waved at Patricia, who was always so kind, and Patricia smiled and waved back."Now, I'm letting Beta Andrew run this contest so that I can just enjoy it with my beautiful daughter," Michael explained.Behind them, Cane chimed in. "And we'll be watching to make sure no one cheats."Ellie turned and looked at him, then caught the eyes of Hans and Seth

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 18: Throw

RiverBlade's smug confidence was sickening. As River watched the other Alpha test the weight of the log he was about to throw in his hands, he had to try not to scoff at the man. He was acting like there was some sort of science to this, some technique he'd learned in all of his year as a log thrower when everyone knew none of them had a vast array of experience when it came to tossing logs across open meadows.Blade went to the line, and Beta Andrew shouted, "Toss at will!" backing away. River stifled a laugh. They were trying really hard to make this seem official, sort of like the Olympics for wolf shifters, but it was all a bit comical. Ulysses, who was standing to River's right, had a harder time not laughing and had to turn it into a cough, which made him choke. River banged him on the back as Blade turned and glared at both of them. "Stop attempting to interfere!""Sorry," River said for both of them. Blade's eyes cut through him for another second, and then he turned back to

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 19: Toss

Ellie"Something is not right," Ellie said, leaning over to her father."What are you talking about?" Michael asked, still cheering along with much of the crowd at the huge toss Blade just made. "That was a throw if I've ever seen one.""Yeah, it sure was," she agreed. "A throw that doesn't match his other throws. And… he's acting weird."Michael gave her a questioning look and then shook his head. "Honey, I know he's not your favorite, but if he wins, he wins. You agreed to this, remember? You're the one who didn't want the Moon Goddess to choose or to pick for yourself. There can be no whining now if things don't turn out the way that you wanted them to.""Whining?" Ellie repeated, her eyes wide. She knew the tone her dad was using. It was that, "I want you to think I might just be playing, but I'm honestly upset at you," tone that he often used when he disapproved of what she did or said but didn't want to pick a fight. Normally, she'd just roll her eyes and go on. But this was dif

River'That bastard beat me.' River sat outside on the back porch of the cabin he was staying in, looking out at the woods, sipping a beer, trying to figure out how in the world Blade managed to beat him. There had to be something to whatever he was doing with his pocket, but River couldn't prove anything, and Beta Andrew claimed he'd examined everything carefully before, during, and after the event, and found nothing. So… all he could do was try to do better in the next event, which would be held the day after next. It was a race, and River knew he was fast. So long as Blade didn't find a way to cheat, he could win. If that was the case, he would at least be tied with Blade for first place going into the fights. It would take a lot for someone to beat River in a hand-to-hand fight. Blade would absolutely have to cheat in order to pull that off.Finishing off his beer, he decided to go for a stroll through the woods. As much as he wanted to let his wolf run and burn off some of this a

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 150: The Moon Goddess Ball

EllieThe string quartet was playing a soft, slow song that seemed to make the silver stars above them twinkle even more somehow as Ellie stood admiring the scene. She'd been right. Everything had come together perfectly, and all across the dance floor, couple after couple had paired off. Her students were finding their fated mates. Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide were coming together with women that had trained in her school."Well, what do you think, beautiful?" River asked, stepping over from where he'd been speaking to another Alpha who'd come with his wife and son, who was their age and looking for a wife so he could take over the pack. "I would say this is a huge success.""Definitely," Ellie agreed. "I see so many people dancing together and falling in love.""I know," River said. "Look at Sarah and Alpha Rob over there. And Nelly and Alpha Lance."Ellie had noticed both of those couples. Sarah looked so lovely in her red dress, and Nelly in her blue one, gazing into L

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 149: Finishing Touches

EllieThe final touches for the Moon Goddess Ball were falling into place, and Ellie couldn't believe how beautiful the event center looked. As she looked around at all of the decorations, her heart fluttered in her chest. She could only imagine how many couples might fall in love in there tonight. It hadn't been easy, getting everything ready for the event, but along with Michael, River, Shelby, and several other volunteers, Ellie had gotten it done. Not only had they put together a beautiful event center, but they'd also managed to get several Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide to commit to attending, and for the past several days, they'd been arriving. Many of them were staying in the cabins in the pack village, the same ones that the Alphas who had competed in her contest had stayed in.Ellie pushed those thoughts out of her mind. It all seemed like ancient history now. The bachelors remaining from that contest would be back that night, still looking for love, though there w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 148: Plans

EllieThe idea of having a Moon Goddess Ball with the women she'd been training to become Lunas was ultimately the idea behind the training to begin with, so when River came in and suggested that they have the grand opening of the new event center be just that, a Moon Goddess Ball for the women in her class, Ellie couldn't believe her ears."Do you think that's a good idea?" River asked her."No, I don't think that's a good idea," Ellie told him, watching his face fall."You don't?" River blinked a few times. It was clear he was searching for something to say that wouldn't offend her."No. I think… it's a great idea," she said, winking at him.A smile broke across his face, wide enough to match her own. "Oh, he said. Good. I was afraid you were going to tell me that it was a bad idea.""No, I definitely think we should do that," she said. "In fact, I think we should start planning it right now. When is the full moon?"River pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the calendar.

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 147: The Event Center

River Rebuilding after the fire wasn't easy, but it was something that brought the entire pack together. In a way, River was slightly glad, though he'd never say it out loud. Supervising the project while Michael recovered from his injuries was interesting. River invited some of the members of his own pack to come over and help. At first, it seemed like there was a bit of a divide between the two groups, but once the "outsiders" proved their value, everyone began to work smoothly together. It took quite a while to clear away the debris from the old event center. After that, they planned a new one. This one was better. It was bigger with more rooms for different events. River had the pack architect draw it out with input from several of the pack elders and other important members of the pack, including Michael, who was out of the hospital by then and staying with Ellie and River so that the pack Luna could spend as much time as possible with her dad. River knew it had really shaken El

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 146: Michael's Love

EllieIt took a few days before Michael was able to come out of the coma, but part of that was because the healers thought it would help him heal if they kept him in a medically induced coma, so by the time he finally opened his eyes three days after the attack, Ellie was thrilled. She was also exhausted, but seeing her father's eyes register on her own made all of that fade away momentarily. "Dad?" she said, looking at his familiar face. "How are you feeling?""Ellie?" he said, his voice weak. He still had an oxygen mask over his face, but all of the tubes and other wires had been removed, other than the monitor hooked up to his finger and the IV he had in his arm in case he needed more medicine. "Where's Michaela?""She's at home with River," Ellie said, giving him a reassuring smile. She wasn't sure how much of the battle he would remember. "She's perfectly fine."Her father's head rolled to the side a bit as he released a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank the Moon Goddess," he said. "I w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 145: A Night in the Healing Center

Ellie Watching the healers work to bring her father back from the dead was like watching a dream for Ellie. She stood there with Michaela in her arms, River's hand on her shoulder, thinking none of this could be happening, that it had to be a dream. But it wasn't. It was real. Her daughter had really been ripped from her bed, and now, the same people who were responsible for taking her child from her may have succeeded in taking her dad.Ellie couldn't imagine what her life would be like without her father in it. For as long as she could remember, he'd been there for her. Like a rock, like the brick wall she needed to hold her up anytime she felt like she couldn't stand on her own, he was always there. Even though she had River now, it wasn't the same. No matter how old a person got, they always needed a parent. But if Michael died, she wouldn't have any parents at all. She'd be an orphan. While she could imagine that her father would be happy to finally be reunited with her mother,

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 144: Alpha Emergency

RiverSeeing Ellie fighting all of those rogues by herself was enough to make River kick himself into a gear he didn't even know that he had. But when he saw his wife carrying his daughter away to safety, he knew that everything was going to be all right, especially since the rogues were grossly outnumbered. There was just the matter of making them pay for the horrendous atrocities they had committed. Not only had they set the village event center on fire, which may have already spread to other buildings, but they'd also violated his home, stolen his daughter, and taken her off in the middle of the night.None of these wolves were walking away from this fight. Not even the huge male that was bearing down on him now.River didn't care that the male seemed to be twice his size. With the anger boiling inside of him from everything he'd seen, River lowered himself to the ground and waited for the wolf to come at him. When the large wolf's teeth snapped at him, River dodged to the side and

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 143: Saving Michaela

EllieThe fact that she'd jumped right over the Omega's head would buy her some time, but only a matter of seconds. He would turn around and be right after her. So… Ellie had to make those moments count. She needed to head right for the female holding her baby and attack before she had the chance to register what was happening.Ellie landed hard on the ground from her leap and ignored the searing pain that shot up her right front paw. She continued to run, registering the look of fear in the female's eyes. It was only there for a split second, but it was there long enough for Ellie to know that she had the upper hand. She aimed low, darting around for the back of the female, away from her baby. She managed to sink her teeth into the female's leg, causing her to yelp. When she did so, she had to let go of the baby blanket. Michaela tumbled to the ground, but it wasn't much of a drop. Still, the baby screamed in fear and possibly a bit of pain. Ellie considered her chances of grabbing h

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 142: Closing In

RiverLeaving the fire to run out into the night, searching for his daughter was enough to make River's heart catch in his throat. How was it possible that someone had taken his baby from her warm bed in the middle of the night? As he tore through the forest, running in the direction his wife told him she was tracking the culprits in, he tried not to think about the fact that he'd been suspecting something like this in the back of his mind for some time. Ever since the rogues started getting close to the village, he'd been wondering if they'd try a stunt like this. If he'd been able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, if he'd thought it was truly possible that they'd try to take his daughter, he would've been more vigilant. Now, he was running as fast as he could, praying that Ellie or someone else saw them soon.If they found them, they would stop them. They just had to find them."River! I see them!"Ellie's voice in his head gave him hope. River's breath stuttered. "Where?" h
