Charlotte called Detective Fontaine from her office, but he wasn't at the station, so she left a message asking for him to call her back.

She really didn't have a lot to do until she met with Logan's team, so she decided to finally call her mother. She had been dreading talking to her since the incident at Mary's party, but she knew she'd have to talk to her eventually, so she might as well get it over with.

Her mother picked up after the first ring.

"Sarah Astor speaking."

"Mother."

"CHARLOTTE MARIE ASTOR!"

Using Charlotte's middle name never meant good news.

"How are you doing?" Charlotte said in a nonchalant tone. She wasn't going to acknowledge that anything was wrong.

"How do you think I'm doing?! We were all worried sick about you. First, you bring this Hamilton man to the party out of the blue, where he causes a scandal, and now you're working on his murder case? MURDER!? You brought a murderer to our

Charlotte met with Stuart and the press team, who seemed a bit lost as to how to get the right news people to talk to them. It was clear that the media was intent on portraying Logan as the bad guy, so they weren't really receptive to hearing the other side to him, yet. First, the press had to exploit this narrative, and then, they'd possibly listen to the other side. Charlotte knew their strategy well. She had minored in journalism, and she had gotten a glimpse at how the news world worked. Besides, she had dealt with them before, and she had a few tricks up her sleeve. She gave the team some tips and dropped several names of people who would talk to them. She also recommended they focus on newspapers instead of television. Reporters from the written press were more likely to be unbiased, and because they didn't require such immediacy as television did, they were more inclined to take more long-term risks, like publishing an article that didn't align with the current

Charlotte had to admit it wasn't too bad inside the helicopter once they were in the air, but the first few minutes of them rising in place and the swooshing away were some of the most terrifying moments of her life. They were all wearing helmets, but she could swear Logan was laughing at her all the while. In about an hour and a half, Stone Mountain came into view. A beautiful lake surrounded the peak, and then she saw the house where they were heading to. It was an enormous mansion, sprawled against one side of the mountain. Before she realized it, the helicopter was losing altitude and she felt like she was losing her sanity. It took all the strength she had not to scream as the helicopter descended and gracefully stopped on the roof that served as a helipad. When they got out, Logan helped her out, pretty much picking her up by the waist and setting her down on the floor. She felt a little wobbly and almost tripped, but he caught her just in time. The helic

Lunch outside meant lunch right next to the cliffs overlooking the lake, and while the view was beautiful, Charlotte purposely stayed away from the edge. She wasn't normally afraid of heights, but she still wasn't sure she was entirely surefooted after the helicopter ride. The sun was high on the horizon, and she and Logan sat beneath a ceiling of vines that covered a wooden deck. "Who was it?" Logan said all of a sudden, once he was done with his food. Charlotte was still at it, enjoying the salmon and yellow rice. The food was superb. "Who was what?" she said. "Who asked you to step away from the case?" She wasn't sure how much of the truth she wanted Logan to know, but after she had asked him for the truth, in turn, she also felt like she had to act accordingly. "My mother, to begin with," she said. "Floyd. And Edward." "Edward?" Logan's curiosity seemed to have been piqued at the mention of h

Charlotte's heart sank. She remembered when just the thought of seeing Edward sent her into a flurry of excitement. Now, he was probably here to admonish her yet again. Seeing him only made her remember the irreparable chasm that had opened between them. She opened the door halfway and peeked outside. It wasn't polite to leave him out in the hallway, but she didn't want to let him in if he was just going to try to convince her to drop Logan's case. When she saw him, she gasped. "Are you OK?" she said. His eyes were bloodshot and he was holding on to the doorframe for stability. He was either drunk or very, very tired. The former seemed more likely, though. His disheveled hair and loose shirt and tie reminded Charlotte of the time they went to a wedding together when they were right out of school. Back then, she had found it amusing and attractive to see him look so unpolished when he was someone who cared so much about his appearance and formalities. No

Charlotte showered for about an hour as if the water could wash the stain of what she had just done. Or allowed Edward to do to her. What happened was very uncharacteristic for both of them. Edward always thought things out, analyzing the hows and whys of everything he did. And Charlotte... well, she had always been more impulsive, but not with men. She had had a few flings here and there during college, but nothing serious. She couldn't allow herself to go out with anyone when her heart had always belonged to someone else. And yet...Tonight he had reduced her to a lover, someone he could visit while drunk, and face no consequences for his actions. In her heart, she wanted to believe Edward hadn't planned for the evening to go that way, and he hadn't requested anything from her, either. But what happened was demeaning to Charlotte all the same. It had been a long time since she felt such hatred for herself, for being so stupid and impulsive an

The Art Museum Gala was a pillar of Atlantian high society, held each year to fund the conservation and restoration of their evergrowing collection of historical pieces. The latest addition to the museum had been a collection of a famous European painter who had spent some time in Atlanta during the Reconstruction era, and it was a very big deal. Charlotte wasn't too familiar with the art world in general, but she had attended the Gala every year, even taking some time off work to come back to the city when she was studying in Savannah. Her father had donated a lot to the museum when he was alive, and even though what she could donate now would never amount to that, she wanted to keep the tradition alive. Everyone who was anyone in Atlant attended, and each year it had a theme. Last year it had been the purple ball, in honor of some tapestries that had been added to the museum's collection. This year it happened to be a costume ball again, which made it even mo

Charlotte couldn't stop looking at herself in the mirror. The dress fit her like a glove, tight in all the right places and hugging her curves to perfection as if it had been made for her. It shimmered in the light; when she moved, she shone. The red-stoned necklace was an excellent complement to the dress. The doorbell shook her out of her self-contemplation, and she hurried to the elevator as fast as her six-inch heels could carry her. Floyd was waiting for her just outside the lobby, and when he turned to look at her, his mouth formed a perfect O. "Well, what do you think?" Charlotte said, twirling. "You look amazing," he said. Linda had done a good job with his clothes too. His black frac had long pointy lapels with a high neck, which went well with the puffy white shirt he wore underneath. With his hair combed backward, he looked quite vampiresque too. "Thank you," Charlotte said. "For everything." "Nothing to thank me f

Charlotte didn't understand what was happening. Who had suggested her for the auction? Because she definitely hadn't volunteered for this. She stepped out of the bathroom only to see that everyone was murmuring about her. "Who is she?" "They should move on to the next one. She must have left." "Is that the same Astor who's that guy's lawyer?" Mary appeared seemingly out of nowhere and gently grabbed her arm. "Charlotte? Are you OK? They're calling you to go on stage!" She seemed very excited about the whole thing, while Charlotte stood there, petrified. "How?..." was all she could say. "Mister! Here she is!" Mary waved her hand in the air, trying to get the director's attention. The spotlight that had been shining on him quickly moved to where Charlotte stood, as the crowd near her parted, making way for her to go to the stage. Charlotte headed into the kitchen after splashing cold water on her face, looking for Logan. She didn't know how to explain it, but she felt an inexplicable... emptiness after waking up and not finding him there.Flashes of their encounter last night flooded her mind. She knew she was being ridiculous. What had happened between them -again- was just pure, undeniable sexual attraction. Adding to how much the two had drunk, what happened was just inevitable. That was all it was. It was all slightly blurry, but it still made her blush. Logan was sitting on the wide balcony, enjoying a buffet-style breakfast displayed on the table. It was a lavish feast, and Charlotte's stomach growled in response to the sight. She knew she should take a shower or at least change before letting Logan see her in the state she was in, but her empty stomach was stronger. "Good morning," Charlotte groaned as she slid the glass door open. "Good morning." Logan briefly smiled at her. "We're leaving for Sav

A few hours later, Charlotte couldn’t feel her feet. The upstairs area was apparently reserved only for a few people, so she danced with Logan as if it was only the two of them there. At some point, she sat down and gulped some water, resting her head on the lush velvet couch. The next thing she felt was someone softly lifting her up while the music pounded into her ears.“What?” she said groggily.“You fell asleep.” It was Logan carrying her. His deep voice sobered her instantly. “I can walk!” she quickly said, squirming to set her legs down. But his arms were stronger, and he held on to her. “Your shoe is broken,” Logan said, looking straight ahead. Thankfully, this seemed to be pretty normal around here. No one even glanced in their direction as he headed down a hallway that ended with an emergency exit. Charlotte lifted her leg and realized that it was true; one of the heels on her stilettos was snapped in half. She focused on his face. He didn’t seem angry or annoyed, just

Charlotte sipped on the cool, fruity drink. It was a soothing balm against the humid, night air. Logan’s penthouse had balconies all around it, giving whoever sat outside a view of not only the sunrise over the ocean, but the sunset towards the sprawling city of Miami to the west. “Do you have everything you need?” he asked her, squinting as the last rays of sunlight peered over the horizon, hitting his face and bathing it in a golden light. How had she never noticed how handsome he was? Well, she had, but she had ignored it. For so many reasons… “I have way more than I need,” she replied, setting the drink down and smiling at him. When Logan made her promise that he could buy her anything he wanted, she didn’t imagine just how much he felt enough was. They had spent a better part of the afternoon all over downtown, going from store to store. A valet followed them, burdened by the sheer amount of shopping bags filled with clothes, shoes, accessories, and jewelry. What was

"What kind of deal?" Charlotte pulled back a little. Because of where Logan sat, he towered over her, and this positioning was never good for negotiating. She had learned a lot from body language throughout the years, and it was never good to make deals when one of the negotiators was sitting in a position that implied power."Come with me to Savannah." Logan leaned back against the desk. "This trip I'm taking is not business-related. I'm going to go visit family and attend a high school friend's wedding. Let's pretend that nothing has happened between us yet. We're just good friends attending a wedding. If, after this trip, you want to keep working for me, I will back off and do whatever you want to make you feel comfortable. I will strictly be your boss. If you want to keep doing... this, whatever this is, I will open up an independent law firm that you will own and manage and you can have nothing to do with me. I think it's time you stopped working for other people w

Once the elevator doors opened on Logan's floor, Charlotte let out a long sigh. Things had happened so fast, and she had just realized what she had done. On the one hand, she couldn't be anything but grateful to Janet for telling her the truth about Floyd, and she was only sad she hadn't known this sooner. But because of the actions she took once she learned the truth, not only was Janet out of a job but technically, so was she. Logan had hired her via the company, and even if she was sure he would be happy to hire her personally, it felt a little demeaning for her. Janet was another story. She was her responsibility now. "Is this Logan Hamilton's office?" Janet said, poking her head out of the elevator and looking around as if she had walked into a cave and not an office floor. "Go, go!" Charlotte nudged Janet to step out and then gestured for her to follow. Stuart greeted her at the front desk, and this time, she saw

Charlotte said, slowly sitting down on the seat in front of Floyd's desk."Charlotte, that was a misunderstanding. A confabulation that my sister made up. She's always envied me, and this was her way of getting back at me for-""I don't care," Charlotte interrupted him. Today was Charlotte’s last day of supposed convalescence, and for the first time in a long time, she didn’t get out of bed the second she opened her eyes. She had nowhere to be until Monday, and the week’s activities seemed to have taken a toll on her; her body was crying for more rest. So, she went back to sleep and woke up to a ringing phone almost at noon. This time she hurriedly stepped out of the bed, almost tripping on her shoes, and made it just in time to pick up. “Hello?” she said. Whoever had called had hung up at the same time. Feeling a little disoriented from waking up so late, she showered and began to prepare breakfast, pouring herself a cup of yogurt and adding an assortment of fruits to it. Then she spent several minutes trying to reach the towing company so it could finally pick up her car and take it to the shop to be fixed. She had put it off

This time, Charlotte didn't hold back. She bit down on his lower lip as their tongues caressed each other's as if the two were finally sating the hunger they felt for each other. Logan pulled her closer, almost sitting on Floyd's desk, and Charlotte clung to his strong shoulders, her hips pressing against him. For the first time in a long time, her mind was blank: the only thing in the world was the man that held her. He grabbed her legs and pulled her on him, making her skirt lift almost to her stomach. "Logan..." Charlotte pulled away a bit. "The door is open." "I don't care," he said, setting her back down on the floor and removing his suit. He then continued to kiss her, his hands navigating her figure, starting with her hips and landing on her back. He then began to kiss her neck, nibbling on it softly as his lips slowly edged closer to her heaving chest. "Do you remember what I told you yesterday?" he said, unbuttoning Charlo
