Chapter 8: A Last-Dream Lie

Autumn POV

With cold calculation, Mathias leaned over me, his eyes sweeping over my face. I continued to look down, my heart thumping hard in my chest. I was aware of the irony: I had just discovered my voice, and now here I was, acting silent once more. My deceit weighed heavily on me and served as a continual reminder of how vulnerable I was.

"Can you speak?" With a tone that pierced through the tense atmosphere in the room, Mathias demanded.

I gave a little sigh just for impact and shook my head. My nose was filled with his aroma, which was a mix of pine and something deeper and more sinister. It required all of my strength to keep from running away and to keep up the appearance of the submissive, silent omega that I was meant to be.

Mathias's face muscles tensed with evident annoyance as his jaw clinched. He spit out, "This is ridiculous," his words brimming with contempt. "Dax! Enter this place right now!"
