CHAPTER 25 : THE QUEEN’S PROMISE

I had spent days inside the confinement. or perhaps several weeks. Here, in the damp, cold stone dungeon where King Sylvester had ordered me to be kept away, time had become meaningless. With just the distant sound of footfall overhead to serve as a reminder that life went on outside these walls, one day blended into the next.

With a jarring sound,, the cell doors opened, and I sat up, heart palpitating. With her visage as impenetrable as ever, Lorna entered the room, accompanied by an unfamiliar-looking guard. Despite their silence, I could tell they were coming after me. Lorna nodded stiffly and beckoned for me to follow. I wavered. Now what? Was this the last one? Was this where my demise lay?

But no, Lorna's face lacked finality.

There was more going on. With shaky legs from inactivity, I gently rose up and trailed them into the dimly illuminated hallway. The guard led the way up the narrow stairs, his armour chiming with every step. The wet chill of the basement faded behind us a

DEREK'S POV:I was driving late at night with Spock and Kara ensconced in the rear seat, their voices merging in a heated conversation. The paved road was eerily lit by the low moon in the sky and I was focused on the road that stretched out endlessly into the city.We were all feeling the weight of the uprising, but I had other thoughts. With a voice as steely as a diamond, Kara said, "We need to hit him hard, Derek. If we manage to enter that castle and spread enough mayhem, Sylvester's power over everything will be weakened. We must take advantage of all of his weaknesses."I gripped the steering wheel more firmly. I should have been exhilarated at the prospect of pursuing King Sylvester and storming into that impenetrable hellhole. That ought to have been all I could think of. However, It wasn't. It was never the case.I was plagued by a spectral image of Vera's dejected face as his guards took her back to her chambers. The awful sight of seeing her locked up in a dank smelly cell

DEREK'S POV:The only sound that broke the silence as I drove through the pitch-black, deserted streets, was the buzz of the motor. The rendezvous was a dilapidated building outside the city, a forgotten artifact of the passage of time. It stood there, a dark silhouette against the black sky, its walls filthy and its windows broken. As I approached the entrance, my hands became more firmly gripped on the steering wheel. That was it.Leaning comfortably against a pillar with a duffel bag slung over his shoulder, Ryan was already waiting for me. The faint glow of a neighboring street light barely lit his face, yet he was as composed as ever.He nodded at me as I got out of the car, his gaze darting around a little before he said. "You're late.""Needed to exercise caution," I whispered as I looked about. The tension spiked in my nerves, making me feel frazzled on the inside. I hated to say it, but as this plan became closer to reality, I began to doubt my ability to see it through.Ryan

  • The Kings Captive   CHAPTER 28: THE SEER’S WORDS

VERA’S POV:How long had I been imprisoned in this stone prison? I had no idea. With the exception of the sound of the guards' footfall on the chilly stone floors, time seemed to have blurred here. Feeling that I was privy to some information regarding the marauders that targeted the northern frontiers, King Sylvester had taken care to keep me sequestered. And now it appeared that my biggest nightmare had materialised, following all of his threats. The hefty wooden slab pushed inward, making the hinges rattle as the door to my cell groaned open. Something changed in the air. I didn't even need to see her to know who it was.Annalise.With deliberate grace, she walked gently into the jail leaving her long, dark cloak trailing behind her, resembling the actual shadow of death. Her dogs trailed at her heels, their feet stealthy and menacing, while their golden eyes dazzled sinisterly.Next to her was a small, pallid girl who couldn't have been older than ten or eleven. The crystal ball s

VERA’S POV:I awoke with a clarity that had not come over me in days. My cell's moist stone walls were familiar, but they didn't seem as gloomy today. Even though my muscles were tense, I got the feeling that I had slept for years and woke up feeling rejuvenated. I couldn't get rid of a weird, inexplicable thought that was stirring within me. It was a whisper of belief, and not a safe one.“I am special. I'm going to be free soon….” were the words that kept flashing in my mind like a bolt of lightning. However, I wasn't stupid enough to accept it at face value. The castle of King Sylvester was a stronghold. I had been held captive here for weeks with no chance of escape. Still, the idea kept coming back to me, as though it were attempting to persuade me. I leaned my head against the chilly stone and embraced my knees to my chest. My independence and options had been taken from me by the castle, but my defiance remained intact. I held fast to that, even if it meant incurring Sylvester

DEREK'S POV:This isn't where I belong. Although my gut told me that this was a bad idea, I was unable to stop myself. Indeed. I kept thinking about her, confined in that jail as a result of my actions. I could always see the treachery in her eyes when I closed mine. The way she stared at me after I turned my back on her and picked Amelia’s side.My hands were shaking and my heart was pounding as I moved through the chilly, stone corridors of the dungeon beneath King Sylvester's castle. Down here, the atmosphere was different; it was thick and stifling, the kind that would suffocate anyone who lingered in it for too long. There was an issue with the sentient guards. They were always like that. They processed every word and every command and cross-referenced it with their database of directives, making it impossible to outthink them. Yet I had a plan; it might not be a strong one, but I had one.The two guards at the door to her cell turned to face me when I got there. For a brief mome

DEREK'S POV:It was a blur walking home. Thoughts raced through my mind, outweighing even the chilly night air that slashed like razors. Indeed. I kept thinking about her, imprisoned in that castle and under Sylvester's control. None of this was fair to her. My heart raced as I thought of her being shackled and how I had let her down, and I balled my hands. As I got closer to my home, each step felt more significant and served as a reminder of the agreement I had made. The chance I was taking to overthrow King Sylvester, the one who had robbed me of everything. However, the issue went beyond revenge. It has to do with her. Everything was always about her.The cracking sound of the wood didn't really disturb my trance as I pushed the door open. The only light in the otherwise gloomy house was the dim moonlight that filtered through the windows. My home was a modest, lonely place that reflected my life as it had become. After entering, I sank into the chair by the window and began to go

VERA’S POV:Just before sunset Lorna arrived, looking as calm as ever, but I could see the strain in her posture. She never wasted time on small talk, and I liked that about her. I had no desire for pointless chatter. The events of the last few days had left me reeling, each one more ridiculous than the last and driving me ever closer to the brink of sanity, which I was barely hanging onto.Lorna replied, "King Sylvester wants to see you," but her eyes flickered warily towards the guards stationed immediately outside my cell. I studied her for a moment before nodding. Fighting it was pointless, for the time being anyway. The cold stone under my bare feet served as a stark reminder of the chains that shackled me, even though they weren't real, as we made our way through the dimly lit hallways of the castle. The guard positioned in front of us maintained a neutral expression with his eyes fixed front, but I was aware that his quiet did not imply disinterest. Each individual in Sylvester

DEREK'S POV:For several hours, I had been stationed outside the castle door, feeling the chilly wind pierce my flesh through my clothes. It was getting closer to night, and I was always nervous about the silence that comes with it when it gets twilight. However, this anxiousness wasn't the typical kind that comes from watching over King Sylvester's stronghold's borders. There was something unusual about tonight. I was unable to pinpoint it exactly.Above me, I could see King Sylvester, in all his regal haughtiness, walking back and forth while speaking with Ryan through the enormous windows of the castle's opulent foyer. The monarch had the broad shoulders and silver-threaded hair of someone born to reign. Ryan, on the other hand, I never trusted. His sly, analytical eyes always seemed to be working extra hours, taking in data that he could utilise to his advantage. Their features were barely visible through the shadows created by the enormous chandelier above them, as they appeared

VERA'S POVThe warm sunlight streaming through the windows of the small cottage highlighted the joyful atmosphere of our little family's lunch gathering. Kevin, Astrid, Apollo, and I sat around the wooden table, laughing and chatting as we savored the delicious meal Sophia, my boss at the bakery, had packaged for us in a box as a token of her benevolence. Kevin, ever the attentive listener, asked the twins about their morning's adventure, and they eagerly shared stories of their exploration of the nearby woods. I smiled, watching my children's faces light up with excitement, feeling grateful for this peaceful moment amidst the chaos that had been brewing in our lives. As we finished our meal, Kevin's expression turned serious, and he leaned in, his voice low. "I have some news," he said, his eyes locking onto mine. "I received a message yesterday from my guys, I mean my childhood friends back at the castle. It seems that Sylvester, Uncle Ryan, and Sigurd are at war, each vying for co
