"ARE ALL of my dresses packed, Lily?"
"Yes, Lady Victoria. And I have also gathered the maids from this household excluding Lady Sabina's handmaidens."
Tori couldn't help but suppress her sadistic expression from Lily. She needed Lily to believe that Lady Victoria was changing for the better, that her Lady Victoria could rival Saintess Sabina.
Rival my ass.
"Good. Then let's go to the assembly hall where everyone was waiting."
Tori was in a good mood. To fully use the workforce of this house, she needed to place the seed of deception.
The servants of the household were waiting for her. They greeted Tori politely upon her arrival, to which she replied with an equally polite smile. The kitchen servants, who were more skeptical about the rumors about the change of Lady Victoria's behavior, admitted that there was genuinely a change with the eldest lady of the Rozenreff Household.
Tori signaled Lily to open the large boxes that contained her previous dresses. The packages here were only just half of the total boxes. The other half was for her different plan.
Murmurs erupted when the sight of her overly lavish and expensive dresses. It seems like the rumors of her goodwill were already circulating before she came down here.
Good. Then I don't have to exert myself in explaining.
"You may question my intention for doing this, but I'll only say this once. This is an act of filial piety for the people I have caused so much trouble with. I apologize," Tori slightly bowed her head, which the servants, even the butler, and the head maid, did not expect. To bow to a commoner from a noble's perspective was the most sincere action anyone could show. The young lady's humble efforts touched the servants' hearts.
"And to make amends as a show of my new beginning, I am giving each servant one dress. You can keep it, give it, or even sell it. Though for my handmaidens, I am giving you two dresses each."
"Thank you so much, Lady Victoria!"
"How can I accept this, Lady Tori!"
"I am at your disposal, Lady Tori!"
"I am so thankful, Lady Victoria!"
The gratitude they showed for receiving such an expensive gift was blatant. But the envy their eyes showed when her handmaidens received more was clearer.
Right. Look how I treated my subjects, everyone. Do you want more of it? Then be on my good side. Abandon that wretched Sabina and surrender yourself to me. This way, I will have the entire Household of Rozenreff under my grasp.
After getting their part, Tori's handmaidens were now helping her distribute the dresses. She gave even male servants a dress. Only one could imagine the value of her dresses, which were adorned with jewels and pearls.
"What's this commotion all about?" The stern voice of Shena stopped everyone's excited chatter. The head maid, Teresa, immediately received Lady Sabina, who had just arrived. Judging by the pissed-off attitude of Shena, it meant that Sabina was not happy about being the last one informed.
"My dearest sister!" Tori greeted her half-sister with enthusiasm in front of anyone. She even hugged her for a split moment, which earned Tori a glare from Shena.
"Greetings, Sister Tori. What's the commotion all about?"
It was clear to Tori that Sabina disliked the thought of her earning the favor of the servants. After all, this wench worked hard to destroy Victoria's reputation inside this manor.
"Remember what I told you about donating my previous dresses? I am giving all the servants half of them to compensate for my complex behavior for the past years. After all, I am the benevolent daughter of Duchess Camila. This is nothing from what the servants endured." Tori slyly hinted to Sabina the difference in their standing because of their mothers. While Tori's mother was the Duchess, Sabina's mother was a common whore lucky to carry the Duke of Rozenreff's child.
Blinded by rage that Sabina was holding in from being insulted, she blurted the words that Tori was waiting for. Finally, she took the bait. "Isn't this a bit too much, sister? As the heir apparent of the Rozenreff Duchy, aren't you overspending? I am telling you this because I am your greatest support, Sister Victoria."
Before Tori's rehearsed tears fell, only Sabina saw the sly smile of Tori.
"I-I am sorry, dearest sister! If only I knew you would be upset that I would give my dresses to the servants, I would have held it all in. I am so sorry. Please forgive me! I want you to see that I changed." Tori dramatically fainted as she shed tears for Sabina. And everyone heard and saw how their saintly Lady Sabina tried to deny them the dress given by Lady Victoria, who showed them benevolence. Everyone witnessed that Lady Victoria's act of goodwill got shoved back by Lady Sabina.
And for the first time since Sabina arrived in the household, the servants' view of Sabina darkened a bit, for there was nothing more offensive for a servant than being deprived of reward.
"Lady Tori!"
Tori heard Lily's frantic voice, but Tori didn't open her eyes. She's savoring the murmurs of the servants.
"Lady Sabina is not happy that we received gifts from Lady Tori."
"Maybe because we are commoners like Lady Sabina."
"She's maybe feeling threatened."
"Then she's hiding her true colors then."
Aah, that's the words. Keep going. Destroy the saintess more. Pluck her feathers before she can fly.
A QUIET dinner together with Tori's sister and father was what she enjoyed the most, especially after the commotion that morning. Tori knew her father would interrogate her for two things. Rowan's arrival and the unrest caused her to faint. After all, her mother fainted from time to time since the late Duchess was sickly.
If she would take advantage of the fact that the Duke loved her mother, then the fainting earlier was necessary to control her father.
"Victoria, I heard from Butler Johannes that you fainted while distributing your dresses to the servants." The Duke's tone was indifferent, but she could detect the edge. He was blaming the servants for her fainting. It meant that the one who supplied him with the unnecessary information was his dearest Sabina.
Tori glanced at the wench who was eating peacefully before her. So this is your retaliation, huh? You will make it seem like I created a stir and fainted with my doing.
"Yes, Father. I fainted from shock."
"I thought you changed for the better, Victoria? What's all this about, huh?" His voice boomed. Tori did not falter nor flinched.
I don't need to defend myself anymore because they will do it for me.
Together with the chef, all the kitchen servants kneeled in front of them, which shocked the Duke and Sabina. Though Victoria had to act surprised as well, she expected this. This was the reason she bowed her head earlier, after all.
"Punish us instead, Your Grace! Please!"
"Lady Victoria showed us benevolence like no other!"
"Lady Victoria is like the late Duchess Camila who showed us goodwill!"
"Please, Your Grace!"
The entire time, Tori was happily watching the wretched Sabina, who was biting her lips from her controlled anger. She was also gripping her utensils rather firmly.
Careful, Sabina. You're showing your horns much earlier than expected. You can't, though, because you will entertain me more from now on.
"Johannes?" The Duke asked for his trusted butler's opinion. He looked torn by the mere mention of the late Duchess.
"Yes, Your Grace?" He stepped forward near the Duke, who was now sitting at the head table beside Tori and Sabina.
"What happened?"
"Lady Victoria asked for forgiveness for behaving oddly for the past two years. She gave each manor servant a dress to show how serious she was. Lady Victoria showed nothing but pure goodwill that touched every servant of this manor, including me and the head maid Teresa, Your Grace."
How's that, Sabina? Tori's expression, which was only visible to Sabina, was smug.
As long as Johannes and Teresa view me positively, my father will always believe me in the future.
"Then why did she faint, Johannes?" The edge was long gone, but it replaced the pure worry instead.
That's the question that you should ask first, father. Now, how will you react, Saintly Sabina?
Sabina considerably paled; hence Tori wanted to snicker.
Johannes uncomfortably shifted his gaze toward Sabina, who was now looking sour and grim.
"Speak, Johannes."
"Father, please don't pressure Johannes. Earlier, I was just a little flustered since I was... rejected. I knew I was a little emotional. I mean, I couldn't blame my dear sister Sabina for not believing my actions after I did to her. But I'm okay now, father, I promise."
For the first time since this wench entered this manor, our father raised his voice toward Sabina. It was a sight to behold. Tori wanted to snicker. If only she weren't trying to look sad. In contrast, the wench was bowing her head to hide her anger towards me.
"Your commoner's blood is much stronger than I thought. A noble lady should know when to accept apologies, but you are prideful. Now it resulted in Victoria's fainting. I will inform you now again since you forgot. Victoria is like my Camila, she's fragile, and you have to protect her."
"Understood, father. I am sorry, Sister Victoria." Sabina's voice was weak, but the hidden poison behind her greedy eyes was clear to Tori.
It is the start of my many victories, Sabina dear.
"All is solved now. You don't need to be sad anymore, sister. My joy is only to be closer to you." Tori stood up to reach out for Sabina's hand.
"From now on, Victoria, you must be careful. You have an uncanny resemblance to your mother, I tell you." His voice expressed how he worried about Tori and missed the late Duchess. The kneeling servants were back to their posts as the first concern of Tori's father was done addressing.
"Yes, father. Uhm, Father, won't you ask me about the boy I brought home the other day?" Tori opened the topic in front of everyone for her later purpose.
By setting a deception for everyone, Tori's cutting off a means for Sabina to use Rowan to Tori's disadvantage. That's why she needed to put things here with everyone.
"Yes. I wanted to hear your reason why you sheltered a boy from your shopping stroll."
Tori knew the knight didn't inform her father of the bag of gold coins she bribed him with. Her father learned that she helped the boy from being chased down by human traffickers.
With a voice and face of utter sadness and worry, Tori faced her father. Her father sees her as a weak girl. "Pardon my impudence for bringing someone from the streets, father. But I didn't know why I couldn't turn a blind eye to him. I saw how he bravely fought those criminals, and I saw the passion of a knight. I knew I wanted him to be my bodyguard from that moment on. But of course, he needs to be knighted by you to be one."
Her father's serious face stared at her, which she equally returned. She wanted him to know that she was as serious as him. Her father didn't reply, so Tori continued to speak the words that would make her father agree to her wishes.
"Mother once told me, father. That a wise leader doesn't need to excel in everything but to have a keen eye to judge character and talent."
With the mention of her mother, her father's resolve would soften. And her words were spoken by the king to the Duke of Rozenreff when they were young. These words left a positive mark on the Duke. They revealed this information during Season 3, a few days before Victoria's execution. The Duke coldly spoke these words to her daughter, whom he saw as far from a leader.
But not now. Father, I will be the only heir of this Duchy. Once you agree to this, it is like deciding that I am the perfect heir to the Duchy. But you aren't thinking of Sabina's feelings anymore, right? Since I spoke of the words that made you vow to the king to be a loyal subject to him. Are you seeing the king in me, father? I am not the king.
I will be better than him, father.
"Spoken like a genuine leader. I am proud of the changes in you, Victoria. You matured. I am glad and at ease. Well, then. Johannes will handle that boy for the time being until he's healthy enough to move to the knights' cabin to begin his training."
"Thank you, father!"
Everyone was glad for Tori except those in Sabina's faction.
"I am happy for you, Sister Victoria."
I am happy to put you in place too, dearest sister of mine.
Tori smiled gently at Sabina.
A PAIR OF cobalt eyes was eerily staring at Tori as she sat on his bed. Tori heard Johannes order Rowan to stay on the bed until his wounds healed. Despite being a fifteen-year-old boy, Rowan was overly malnourished, and he needed strength to become a knight-in-training.After five days since she brought him with her, this would be the first time that she visited him, though she asked Lily to check on him from time to time. Her father assigned Johannes to aid him, so Tori didn't see the need to interfere yet.She would let him settle down first and let all his wariness wash away. And now she's here in front of him to clear one thing for him."Why did you bring me here?" His voice was sharp. He still didn't trust her, even when the evidence of their promise was dangling from his neck. She smiled genuinely at him. "Remember when I told you I need you to protect me? I now have full consent from my father, the Duke of Rozenreff, that you will be my knight. I think that would be better tha
TORI WAS alone and contemplating inside her room. She’s seriously staring at the invitation letter that Lily reminded her about. The previous Victoria still decided to not attend this banquet, even after knowing where it came from. It was common knowledge that refusing a royal invitation meant disobedience to the royal family. Luckily, Tori attended the banquet with her father and that wench. Two days after the tea party, Sabina was still in her room. The meals were being delivered there. She barely even showed herself, and according to Lily, that wench looked quite haggard. Tori couldn’t blame her, since her grand plan to earn the Marchioness’ good side was all in naught after she interfered. Instead, Tori became the star of the party. After getting involved just to show some action in front of the high society ladies, Tori knew words would spread about her benevolence that’s comparable to the kindhearted Duchess Camila. Tori didn’t need to do much for some time. She could focus on h
THREE YEARS from now, in the original plot, a small shop became the Empire’s most successful business would ever see. The shop owner invented the very first camera named KONON, and many nobles and aristocrats loved the newly developed device. The emperor gave the shop owner the title of Baron, and he became a leading role for the aristocratic faction. However, the Baron died together with all the aristocratic faction’s loyalists when the second prince died in Season 2. Even with the newly gained status and wealth, the Baron fell into Marquess Zoliel’s trap and was beheaded for treason.Marquess Zoliel rose to power when the sponsored lady of Marchioness Susana became the Crown Princess candidate. If I can stop Marquess Zoliel’s greed to monopolize the merchants in the Empire, the aristocratic faction can rise to power, a power that will be enough to protect and support the second prince. And I will be the person behind the new king.“Now, what will make you fall?” Tori was staring out
Lady M smirked. “A lady after her own heart, I like that. Follow me.”Lady M guided the three of them towards a secret passage that led to a comfy-sized room that looked like Lady M’s office. The latter sat comfortably, and Tori followed suit. Lily and Rowan stood at the back of Tori, completely on guard.“Leave us for a moment,” Tori ordered the two, which they reluctantly followed. When Tori was left alone with Lady M, the latter finally spoke, “So tell me, what is a noble lady doing here?”Tori took off her hood and sat comfortably. “Now, that isn’t the information we must be talking about. How about we start our conversation with the location of the Elysian Crown?”Lady M abruptly stood up from her seat due to shock from what she heard. Tori couldn’t blame her. After all, the Elysian Crown was why the original novel got the title ‘Thorny Crown.’Thorny Crown was the title of the novel series, which later became a popular Netflix Series. The story was about the first prince and the
THE DINNER after the afternoon incident was quite enjoyable for Tori. It didn't seem like what she usually felt which was suffocating for her.Maybe because I could watch a good comedy show earlier. Well, whatever, as long as the Duke dearest wouldn't open his mouth.Tori didn't like the Duke, nor did she hate him. She just disliked the fact that they easily manipulated the duke.Ah, disappointment is the right term when describing what I feel for him."Victoria. Your birthday is coming. Do you have any requests?" He nonchalantly asked Tori which stopped Sabina too.And there he goes, opening his mouth and ruining my tranquility. So much for hoping he'll shut up, huh? And what? He's asking me for my birthday? Is he sniffing Cannabis?Since Sabina came to the Rozenreff Household, the duke always forgot Victoria's birthday, but never Sabina's. Hence, every year the siblings always compete secretly if who's the best party. What a dumb thing to do, honestly. It surprised Tori since he rem
"I want three things that only the two of you can give me. First, I want some gold under the identity of Benefactor T. Second, I wished to be an unofficial member of the aristocratic faction in which I wanted to gain access to the faction's connection in the future. And third, I want Prince Corean to never forget my deed after I make him king, hence he'll have to grant me a wish and I promise it won't harm him or the Empire."The two realized Tori planned all of these. The second prince even suspected that Tori knew his identity all along. But they didn't know that Tori only took a gamble for the sake of her best course of action.Lady M and the second prince agreed and signed an oath contract. An oath contract was a sacred contract and only a few choose to use this. After signing and reading all the terms and conditions, the three burned the contract together. It was a sign that it was a promise that only the three of them knew. As nobles, Lady M and the second prince respected the o
"That is good news, Victoria! Why did you apply for the Trifecta Academy?" He was genuinely amazed and in awe of his daughter's achievement.Trust me, I wanna know too. What were you thinking, Victoria?Tori tried to remember the scene of the second male lead's flashback. In the Netflix Series, Zeno Mcmillian who's one of the second leads was a top scholar. In the flashback, Zeno prepared a detailed essay about what will he contribute to the Empire should the academy accept him. Then, did Victoria prepare an essay too? And she passed and got even invited? But according to the Netflix Series, only those who are old enough may take the entrance exam. And Zeno was fifteen years old when he came to the academy."I uh, I just want to deserve the Rozenreff name, father." Tori just guessed the reasoning behind the action of the original Victoria. Why do I feel that I am being blindsided by the Netflix Series? Was this revealed in Season 6 which I didn't get to watch? Because I am sure as hel
AS THE TWO NOBLEMEN walked away, the impolite Sabina also walked away without saying a word to Tori. Though Tori didn't miss the deadly glare from Shena, Sabina's maid, Tori just looked forward to their retaliation. The news might have shocked the poor soul since the original Victoria didn't display any trace of intelligence. What a bunch of losers. It would be fun to destroy them, but even insects have a role to play. So, my dear darling sister, please hold on to your head while it lasts.THE DAYS given by the headmaster of Trifecta Academy were well spent by Tori. Duke Luwen Rozenreff checked on her from time to time, and sometimes he would bring new books he gained from the capital of the royal palace. The butler or the head maid would make sure to bring her foods prepared by the head chef or sweets to keep her away from hunger while studying. And her handmaidens were preparing her for the best of baths every evening, which she appreciated. All those days, Sabina never visited her,
A YEAR passed by since the coup d'etat happened that sparked the rebellion against King Elphaim and Prince Lauren. But as Grand Duke Rowan Cristof Castaña stared at the sleeping Lilian on his bed, he could not believe what transpired within a year after that fateful day. Rowan stepped out from the bed, careful not to disturb his wife. But no matter how stealthy he thought he was, she woke up. “So early? Where are you going, husband?”He leaned to kiss her forehead before he answered her. “Go back to sleep, wife. I will be late this evening. I have to attend the imperial faction meeting.”“That reminds me, I have to go to the palace to meet Her Majesty,” mumbled Lilian whose eyes sparkled like the stars in a clear night sky upon mentioning the queen. Sometimes Rowan pondered who his wife loved more, him or the queen? Not wanting to depress himself so early in the morning of spring, Rowan decided to leave his wife who was now dozing off.Right after the death of King Elphaim and Prince
PRINCE LAUREN walked with gritted teeth. His jaws clenched as he analyzed the chain of events that led him to his current situation. Why? Everything is going as plan! Until that wench got her head chopped off."Will we die here?""I don't want to die.""Hush, the imperial family might hear you."The whispers among the nobles fueled the first prince's temper. I am the future king yet some entitled boy is wearing the centuries-old crown right now. The passageway they were using was an ancient knowledge passed down only to the members of the royal family. This passage was hidden just behind the royal family's audience room for safety purposes such as today. The pathway was cramped surrounded by stone walls. Torches lit their way, guiding them through the darkness. With five royal knights at most, Prince Lauren knew that they were in a perilous situation. He glanced at the calm former duke of Rozenreff Duchy. The latter was holding Lady Sabina tightly and close to him.Seconds turned to
Prince Corean stared at his father who was grinning from ear to ear. He watched the person he once respected surrender to greed. His gaze shifted to his mother who remained clueless and was now surrounded by her attendants as the latter fainted from stress. Cory clenched his fists from worrying his frail mother but it needed to be done. His gaze then settled on his elder brother. The long enmity between them would not be settled. The second prince knew that he needed to end this now, for his mother and Victoria.Lady Merilla smirked. She signaled the royal knights on stand-by. "What are you waiting for? Arrest him!" Her emerald-colored eyes glinted with every step the royal knights took.Tori stared at the grinning king, and then at Lady Merilla, who was standing a meter away from her at the podium. The noble faction cheered for the royal knights. It's time. Tori turned to the traitor. "Who says you already won?" Tori offered her sweetest smile to Lady Merilla, who replied with a mo
The traitor triumphantly grinned as she saw the reactions within the courtroom. Just like her plan, the tides of favor were on her side. Lady Merilla continued after silencing the courtroom with a raise of her hand. "The internal conflict within the northern region and the unification of the north is the step which aims to usurp the throne. Letters between the three chieftains of the tribes in the north sent letters to the capital months before the said war, it was for their benefactor. Here are the letters with the duchess's name on them as she plotted everything.""All along, I thought it was the duchess so I sent the gathered shreds of evidence to the first prince whom I never thought would help me, a lady from the opposing faction. But Prince Lauren helped me reach my concerns to the king and an arrest was immediately issued to capture the duchess. With the help of Duke Rowan Castaña, the duchess was proven to be framed by the real culprit. Who would have thought that the person I
IT WAS customary for the royal knights to escort the accused, but Tori defied the rules. The royal knights under the banner of the first prince blocked their way out of the prison when she escorted the second prince herself with the Ming Country's knights. Tori stepped forward, her body shielding the nonchalant second prince. "Move," said Tori in a chilling tone. She saw how the royal knights barricaded before her faltered."We are here under the command of the emperor to escort his son to the courthouse." The leader of the royal knights blatantly lied which earned him a cold dead stare from Tori.Liar. You were taken by the first prince to kill the second prince on the way to the courthouse. If Prince Lauren made such drastic action, then he must be feeling anxious in this noble trial. "Oh, you are from the emperor's royal knights? Such a shame to miss them from our collection, right Prince Yei Lin?"The royal knights wondered what she was talking about. The countless eyeballs that
DUKE ROWAN Cristof Castaña spent his entire day just to complete the mission that Tori gave him. The hue of crimson red and purple splashed at the sky as if warning him of the impending battle this day. The young duke knew how Tori prepared for this day. He saw how she neglected her sleep to oversee every detail of her plan. Rowan knew how Tori anticipated every move from the enemies, which strengthened his resolve. This empire needs someone like Tori. For Rowan who came from the slums before he sat on his seat as the Duke of Castaña, he saw firsthand how Tori viewed the empire. In fact, she was seeing things as if she knew how the future would turn out. This made him respect her even more. She was not like the other members of the nobility—she was fair. After all, she took someone like him to the slums. The young duke strode inside the Castaña Duchy. The butler welcomed his return. "Blessings to the Empire's spear and shield, Duke Rowan Castaña.""Prepare me my bath; I have a noble t
"Then how can we counter this one?" The prideful duke lowered his pride; he refused to let another daughter of his suffering from the aristocratic faction.Headmaster Eyzana breathed a sigh of relief when the duke snapped from his rampage. "No need. Collect your cool, Duke Luwen. I have already sent my men to check the food that allegedly poisons the common folks. Let us wait for him then.""That is good. My men conducted an investigation but they are yet to give me a favorable result."It is understandable. If that person is the one under this scheme then it is likely that we will find nothing.Though the two influential men did not need to wait any longer when three successive knocks interrupted them. Duke Luwen straightened up before answering, "Come in."A young nobleman with the emblem of the Trifecta Academy came in with papers in his right arm. He bowed to the Duke and then to the Headmaster before speaking. "I have found what caused this illness." His wary voice and fearing ey
"How dare you accuse my event of food poisoning? This is a sponsored event of my beloved Prince Lauren!" The weight of her words as she proudly declared the first prince's connection to this alleged poisoning was later on realized when Sabina saw the ghost of a smile on Lord Zeno's face as if he was waiting for those words all along.I have been tricked! But her words could not be retracted anymore. Her palms were drenched with sweat as she clenched them. Biting the inside of her cheeks, Sabina looked frantic much to the young lord's interest. The whispers and the distrusting looks from the masses whipped around Sabina as she struggled to maintain her composure. Shena looked worried but could not butt in due to her status.Opening her mouth to say something, the shrilled voice of the commoners buried her voice. Startled and infuriated, Sabina looked behind her only to stagger backward as she saw one by one the commoners started to lose consciousness. "Marchioness Susana!" Looking at
Clad in a simple gray-colored indoor dress, Tori guided her newly arrived guests to her chamber's receiving area. Sitting at the head chair at the center, the two followed suit by sitting at both of her sides. Crossing her legs, Tori asked the regal-looking Marchioness. "How is life as the House Zoliel's head?""You know I can't be truly calmed unless the investigation stops, Lady Victoria." The wariness in her voice reflected on her face as she fidgeted with her handkerchief.Lily together with the other two handmaidens came trotting in with the teas in their hands. As the three served them, Tori replied to the Marchioness. "I understand your concern, Marchioness. That is why you are here, right? To foresee everything until the end." Yes, after all, you killed your husband for the fear of being imprisoned or kicked out from a life of luxury. "So, how is the preparation on your end? I received the reports from Prince Yei Lin's side.""I gathered as many witnesses as I can. The food
